Seijiro |
"Well, that could turn out to be disappointing.. still, we have a location for Corlan... shall we go pay him a visit?"
Rain Taneththir |
They were fortunate to have discovered the exact whereabouts of the Tengu smuggler, Corlan.
"Aye, let us proceed to Corlan's apartment."
Immortal, do you need any further/new checks from us at this time, or will you simply fast forward us to the edge of the Tengu Rookery?
DM Immortal |
Thats up to you all. I can fast forward to the house if you like just let me know.
Rain Taneththir |
I have no issue with fast forwarding. Not sure if the other players wanted to do something inbetween the info gathering and finding Corlan.
Seijiro |
i'm good with fast forwarding
Variel Nightstorm |
Good to go with moving on to Corlan's house.
As it seemed that there was one dead end after another in trying to find Roweena Variel agreed to find Corlan. It seemed he was easier to get a hold of and directions to his house were made after some time of questioning the locals. On the way to the house Variel kept an eye out and warned the others about assassins as well. There is no guarantee that we are not being watched right now. We were probably seen at Haddon's. Watch your back and be prepared for anything.
perception 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (13) + 2 = 15
I so need my headband upgraded with perception as the skill
Seijiro |
Seijiro does his best to shadow Variel, Rain and Adular rather than walk at their side, keeping his eye out for anyone else shadowing them... watching rooftops as well as ground level...
perception: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (16) + 12 = 28
Rain Taneththir |
At Variel's words, Rain gave an affirmative nod and cast her eyes about the path, rooftops etc as they made their way toward the Tengu rookery.
Perception: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (9) + 14 = 23
DM Immortal |
You all make it to the intersection without incident and detect no one following you.
DM Immortal |
You all are at the intersection and can see the house. What are you going to do?
Seijiro |
Seijiro looks to Variel and asks softly, "Do you want me to scout the place out before you all approach openly?"
Rain Taneththir |
"I think it is a fine idea for you to scout with all your talents, Jiro", Rain answered quietly as they had reached the Tengu Rookery and the apartment of Corlan which was not too far ahead.
Seijiro |
Seijiro goes into stealth mode lol, using his camouflage ability to it's utmost, and sneaks up on the apartment, trying to get a good look around the place and in through any available windows to see if someone is home and still alive.
stealth: 1d20 + 20 ⇒ (16) + 20 = 36
Rain Taneththir |
Rain, with wings furled inward against her cape/cloak, moved a little forward as Jiro disappeared from general sight to attend to his particular scouting mission.
She began to move with purpose and stealth, not seeking to draw attention to herself. When she drew a little closer to Corlan's abode (but not too close so as to impede Jiro's task), she looked about the Tengu rookery and path - surrounding buildings - listening for and observing all that she could (in the shadows) to help Jiro and their party while they waited for Jiro's own findings.
Perception to hear any conversations in the near vicinity or see anything noteworthy: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (5) + 14 = 19
Stealth to move about without immediate notice: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (12) + 11 = 23
Rain is in no way getting in Jiro's way -- she's simply observing and listening a little away from the apartment - in its surrounding space - hoping to note something while she waits for Jiro to return.
DM Immortal |
Neither one of you sees anything amiss. Seijiro the windows at ground level are shuttered but you all have seen that all of the windows on the upper levels of most of the buildings are open to the heat. That said, you can't see anything out of the ordinary in the windows of Corlan's apartment that you can see.
Seijiro |
Seijiro returns to the group and reports on what he did.. or in this case didn't see or hear... (heard nothing too?)
perception: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (4) + 12 = 16
with that roll I'm assuming not
Rain Taneththir |
Rain did not see or hear anything useful in her own observations. When Jiro reported he had not either but that the upper storey window was open - Rain's eyes craned upward to look at the window and then back at her companions.
"Perhaps the best recourse here is to go to the front door, knock and see if anyone is in? Mayhap we can sweet talk our way into Corlan's presence. Unless you would have me fly up to the window and attempt to listen or enter from there?"
She waited to see if Variel approved or had another suggestion before she would attempt such a thing.
Variel Nightstorm |
Perhaps the best option would be to have Jiro and Rain enter the top area just inside the window thanks to his teleporting ability. That way we have his escape route covered. The rest of us can proceed to the front door and see if he answers. If Corlan seems agreeable then Rain can fly Jiro down hopefully without Corlan noticing anything amiss. If he proves elusive or does not want to cooperate then you can come up him from behind.
Horatio Flynn |
Horatio slides his pistols from his belt and checks the priming as he listens to the others talk; specifically listening to if they saw any threats or danger.
Seeing the intimidating alleys and looming walls that shadow the street itself, he glances at Amen-set and nods at her.
She returns his nod. Then she whispers something to Horus and suddenly the bird flies from her shoulder into the air even as she lifts the musket to her critical gaze and checks it.
Horus will make a wide circle above the streets roughly seventy-five feet above Corlan's house, circling in about a sixty foot radius. Horus is busy scanning the surrounding area for any potential threat and will report back to Amen-set what he sees...
Horus's Perception Check from above the streets -
1d20 + 14 ⇒ (19) + 14 = 33
Horus will be looking for anything dangerous and will report it back to the company if/when he sees anything.
DM Immortal |
Horus sees a large amount of things that could be construed as dangerous. There are dozens of open windows with everything from people reading to eating to mother's disciplining their children to men with rapiers and crossbows walking the street, obviously part of some merchant's guard, to light-fingered street urchins, etc. There are people on some of the roof's fixing chimneys and shingles, homeless people sleeping in alleys, etc.

Horus will inform Amen-set who informs Horatio.
Horatio considers the information very carefully.
Of course, Horatio knows that Horus is easily able to see not only the area beneath him but had also surveyed specifically the surrounding area as well.
After hearing the information relayed he is now completely certain that there are no immediate threats that exist on any of the streets and rooftops - unless an enemy is using some sort of invisibility spell, perhaps.
That being the case, he goes directly to the house of Corlan and knocks on the door.
Amen-set follows somewhat behind him (roughly 30 feet) with her musket ready.
DM Immortal |
Horatio knocks on the door and you all feel a moment of apprehension and dread. A few moments pass...the doorknob slowly turns from within...you ready yourselves for whatever may come through that door. Is it a devil waiting to pounce upon you, perhaps the tengu is a vampire and will seek to drain you of your life! Oh the horrors that may lay beyond this door! The door eventually opens, after a great deal of cursing and yanking, it apparently got stuck shut for a moment, a raven feathered tengu answers the door, dressed in normal clothing. He looks at Horatio and says Well met sir. How can Corlan help ye?
Right at that moment, a large crossbow bolt slams into the Tengu's eye and explodes out of the back of his head, taking a large portion of bone and brain with it.
Everyone can roll perception again.
Horatio Flynn |
Well met sir. How can Corlan help ye?
Right at that moment, a large crossbow bolt slams into the Tengu's eye and explodes out of the back of his head, taking a large portion of bone and brain with it.
Horatio dives forward and slams the Tengu to the ground into the doorway, hoping to get into cover and hopefully out of the way of another shot.
Pushing the body into the room in front of him, he turns to toss a glance over his shoulder at where the crossbow bolt came from...
Perception Check
1d20 + 13 ⇒ (4) + 13 = 17
Horatio will also instantly cast "Cure Light Wounds" on the body - it's not likely it will make a difference, but I'm still going to try:
Cure Light Wounds
1d8 + 4 ⇒ (7) + 4 = 11
Seijiro |
perception: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (20) + 12 = 32
Seijiro whips his head around and focuses on the spot where the bolt came from.
Rain Taneththir |
It all happened so fast - Flynn knocking on the door before she had taken to the air to get to the window, the Tengu smuggler answering the door and the bolt killing Corlan instantly.
Rain reacted and swivelled around in the direction of the bolt in hopes of spying the assassin or anything of note.
Perception: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (19) + 14 = 33
DM Immortal |
Flynn you feel the healing energy leave your hand but it does nothing to the body. Your knowledge of anatomy can tell you that death was instantaneous with that shot.
You turn your head to look but do not see anything just then.
------------------------------------------
Seijiro and Rain, you turn and spot a man with a crossbow who seemed to have appeared in one of the open windows, tucked back in the shadows of the room. He sees you see him and winks before turning and walking into the building beyond your sight.
------------------------------------------
Rain Taneththir |
Rain did not recognise the assassin and the man did nothing to mask his face from their sight.
"A blonde human in the building there", Rain pointed to the open window where the man with the crossbow had stood moments before.
"Should we give chase? I'll take to the air on your word." She cast her eyes to Variel and then the others.
DM Immortal |
Rain has the description right. Blonde Hair, brown eyes, human, wielding an ornate bladed crossbow.
Horatio Flynn |
"Should we give chase? I'll take to the air on your word." She cast her eyes to Variel and then the others.
Horatio turns from the corpse on the ground and hears Rain's description.
"Deal with it," he says with a growl to Amen-set as he drops a knee and scans the surrounding area more intently trying to guess where the shot came from.
Amen-set's eyes narrow and she waves Horus up to the sky. Seeing where Rain had gestured she instantly charges from the group toward the building that the assassin has gone through.
Horus flies up to the roof above the building and circles it, seeking for where the assassin may decide to exit.
Realizing that the assassin is now on the run he dashes after Amen-set and calls out to Adular -
"Mind the bolt! Divination spells can be used to track the one who handled it!"
Then he rushes to the building that the killer entered in.
Horatio and Amen-set will be charging toward the building where the killer has gone into. Horus is above the buildings to scan the area.
If there is a combat map to use, I will use it.
Since Rain saw the killer and told us where he was going I'm figuring we can get there without much difficulty. However, if there is a check you need me to make to find this guy, please let me know. Thanks!
Variel Nightstorm |
Jiro, after him with Rain, myself and whom ever else you can take with you. With luck we can catch him.
Variel waits to cast haste on the group once D-doored in to give Rain move moevement to catch the assassin. Once cast Variel will use a swift action to activate his quickrunner's shirt and effectively take a double move of 120ft after the assassin.
Rain Taneththir |
Rain took to the air after Variel cast his spell - flying up to the window level of the apartment where he took the shot
She swiftly took on the aspect of the Falcon and her eyes changed and she could see more keenly. (Animal Focus: Duration 3 mins - FALCON: +4 to Perception, swift action.)
(With haste it gives Rain a fly speed of 70ft.)
Fly check to swiftly get to upper storey window: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (17) + 2 = 19
Once inside the upper chamber, Rain drew her magical pike (not extended at present) and began to cautiously/keenly give chase, searching and using stealth to locate the blonde human).
Perception to spot blonde-haired assassin: 1d20 + 14 + 4 ⇒ (20) + 14 + 4 = 38
Stealth not to be seen or heard as she moves: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (20) + 11 = 31
Horatio Flynn |
Realizing that neither he, nor Amen-set, will be able to catch this person without magical means Horatio stops suddenly and gives a sharp whistle.
Amen-set stops in her charge and looks back at him confused.
Seeing his look she halts in the pursuit and then turns and moves slowly back to where he waits by the entrance to the house that Corlan was discovered in.
Corlan was a smuggler and likely had access to strange or unusual goods. Besides this, he recalls that the last person they were looking for was killed with two crossbow bolts that struck the body very close together. He assumes the killings may be related, but he is not sure, so he begins to search.
While the others deal with the assassin he enters the house with his pistol out and decides to search it for any clues as to why this strange assassin may be after Corlan specifically.
Take 20 on Perception to Ransack the house for a total of 33
Seijiro |
He's toying with us... cocky fellow. Seijiro thinks when the man winks at them... he runs toward the building after being hasted... and instead of entering, he runs around the building the back, only stopping if he encounters the blond man... While he expects the man can probablyl teleport or has some other means of escape, he'll at least try to head him off.
stealth to be unseen: 1d20 + 20 ⇒ (11) + 20 = 31
perception to spot assassin: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (7) + 12 = 19
Seijiro |
I think he's confusing my incorpeality with dimension door maybe?
Variel Nightstorm |
Correct, Jiro, I thought you could effectively d-door with your ability and take people with you.
Seijiro |
that would be sweet, but unfortunately, I can't, sorry, though if this item is supposed to scale as we level like Neko is doing, perhaps someday. So far it hasn't changed from its original status.
DM Immortal |
The killer flees deeper into the building as you all give chase. Rain flies through the open window to follow directly while Seijiro begins to run around the building, preventing him from slipping away out the back. Flynn and Amen-set head into Corlan's to search for anything interesting. Variel heads after Seijiro. Adular grasps the bolt and turns to give chase. 1d20 ⇒ 15
--------------------------------------------------------
Flynn, taking 20 is the equivalent of doing 20 separate searching checks so will take quite a while. Remind me after everything is done with the chase and I will give you what, if anything, you find.
--------------------------------------------------------
Rain, you maneuver through the window and find yourself in the upper floor of a warehouse, relatively devoid of anything but some hay bales. You spot the assassin sprinting toward a large window at the opposite side facing another upper floor warehouse door that lies open. The assassin leaps across to the other one... 1d20 ⇒ 7 ...moving past the 10' gap with ease before continuing to run.
Rain, I need a fly or jump check dc 10 to get across without snagging your wings on the doors.
--------------------------------------------------------
Seijiro and Variel, just as you come around the building, you see the assassin leap across between open windows 30' above your heads and head into the other building, Rain in pursuit. You have a decision to make, go left around the building and look for a door in or go right and do the same.
Seijiro |
Seijiro continues running around the next building, going forward and left instead back the way he came from and right (so as not to lose momentum). (double move)
Horatio Flynn |
Flynn, taking 20 is the equivalent of doing 20 separate searching checks so will take quite a while. Remind me after everything is done with the chase and I will give you what, if anything, you find.
I believe it should only take about two minutes; but since neither Horatio nor Amen-set were near enough to be Hasted we won't be able to catch them so I figured we'd do what we could to aid the party by searching for clues while they're hunting him.
Including Amen-set's "Aid" in this matter (and the Taking 20) I believe the total should be 35.
Even if there are no specific clues as to who is after him, if this guy is a smuggler I expect he'd have at least something of interest in his house. I look forward to discovering what that is :)
Rain Taneththir |
Fly across 10ft gap without snagging wings (DC10): 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (19) + 2 = 21
On phone. Will post more later in my afternoon when I'm back home. :)
Variel Nightstorm |
As Jiro took tot he left and he sees Rain go through the window up above Variel hurries his way to the right so as to try and keep all avenues of escape blocked off. If a single move (60ft) gets him around to the far side then he will cast effortless armor quickening his speed even more and make it easier to follow the assassin.
edited post as I realized belatedly I did not have fly on my sheet for this day. Bad on myself, sorry
DM Immortal |
Good on the fly check Rain.
Variel you see in front of you a large wagon blocking your path. You can go around it but it will take valuable time, or you could try leaping over it.
Double movement if you go around it, or you can keep your normal movement with an acrobatics check DC 22 to leap over it.
---------------------------------
Seijiro, you go around the corner and are also faced with a choice, there is a ladder going up to the second story, where you know the assassin last was, that you can take, or you can continue forward around the dilapidated building and attempt to cut the man off should he make it out of the building he's in. Either way could be correct but if you choose poorly it could let the man escape.
---------------------------------
Rain, the room you just entered seems to be some sort of bedroom, you barely make that out before rushing after the man who has made his way into an interior hallway and is sprinting down it.
Seijiro |
Seijiro knows that Rain is inside following the man so continues around toward the back of the building... He doesn't round the corner if there is one though, in case the man tries to slip outside and go down that ladder himself, he wants to keep it in sight.
Variel Nightstorm |
Variel will double move to go around it and get tot he far side of the wagon/building.
