Variel sheaths his blade as he lowers himself to the ground. After making sure that the enemies are dead he chants a few words as he reduces in size to his normal self. Tired and sore he gladly nears Adular as the good priest channels to heal the group. Fully restored other than some minor damage from the cloud that sucked some of his vitality away he was patched up.

Once able to draw a breath without pain lancing through him he thanks Adular profusely. My good man I do not know what I would do without you. Under your ministrations I believe I could face another foe right now. thank you dearly.

Once done with Adular he turns to find Rain to see how she fares. Taking her hands to holds them to see if they are steady and Rain is okay. Looking up into her eyes his are filled with concerned for her.I am sorry I was not able to follow you closely with this fight. I had hoped to finish Milksop quickly and end this. Unfortunately he was too quick for me and I lost him. Ana paid the price for my failure and all of us were grievously injured. How are you and Neko holding up? I saw Neko briefly but then lost track of her. Once you went below as well to help Amen-set and Horatio I lost track of even you. I am glad to see you were abel to help them and protect yourself at the same time.

After Variel makes sure that Rain is ok he then checks in on the rest to make sure that they are all healthy enough given the situation. He expresses words of thanks to all and apologizes for how quickly things escalated with Milksop seeming to gain the upper hand so quickly. Perhaps next time it would be batter to attack first than bandy words about.

To Ana he expresses great sorrow and takes much of the blame on himself for not being able to help below decks. Let us know what can be done to aid you in honoring the fallen. Your ways are strange to me but I will do what I can to aid you in properly showing respect to Brightscales.

Conversation with Variel before going down to the hold with Amen-set.

"You take too much of the blame on yourself, A'maelamin. The entire group did not work effectively as one - and Milksop had more magic than we supposed. We must learn from this - all of us - and do better next time. Alas, Ana's brave companion is dead and it will take some time for her to grieve. Neko and I are well now, I was hurt but not as gravely as the golden cat. But as you see, both of us are hale and steady." Rain showed him, so he could see with his eyes that the bloodstains were just remnants of the battle. "Are you well? Have you had healing from Adular?"

At Variel's words that the next time they encountered an enemy it was best to gain the advantage and not waste time with charm and words, Rain nodded, "Aye. Flynn had the right of it from the start - he did say we should attack first and take the caster by surprise. It seems wiser to ask questions later."

Before Variel turned to speak with Ana, Rain quietly informed him that she and Amen were going to search the lower deck of the Dryad's Grave. "It seems earlier Amen was able to read the thoughts of one of her assailants in regard to some hidden thing below. We will investigate and let you know what we discover."

Amen-set wrote:

"Come, then, and we shall seek them together while the others wait aloft," she adds.

"I am ready. Let us look for this hidden thing and be ready to move on. Sitting in open sea like this is not wise."

"You've a fine gift for making me feel better about my small part in this Captain, thank ye for the kind words. But next time I'll be sure to let folks know what I'm doing afore I jump in the drink on a wild goose chase. Still feel bad about that." He looks at the new ship, "Heavy cost but quite the prize we have here."

"Not really.. nothing wrong healthwise that a few nights rest won't settle, but I feel like I .. well, I just didn't pull my weight in this fight... and I'm kinda tired of getting the stinkeye from Flynn whether I do or don't... this time maybe I deserve it a little but it happens every time. I did inspire for a while when I stayed to protect the Lady, then I got kinda confused, but overall, I just didn't do as much as I probably could have. I feel bad about it, but I can't change it... I'm sorry, but well... i have no excuses I guess." He sighs again, glances at Adular while he talks, but when he finishes, he stares down at the deck again.

"Well, I ken feeling less than useful, particularly this battle. I don't always agree with Amun, but she had a good point in that best is best. As for stinkeeyes, maybe you read it wrong, but if you didn't, not your concern. Folks will always judge, important thing is you're happy with you,, and if you're not? Then that's just something to work on, eh?" Adular said, "I think you're a fine lad, good to have in any scrap, and if I'm not presumming, a find friend. You've cheered me up many a time and I'm happy to try to return the favor. Maybe later on, after everyone has their full health back, we'll drink and chat...maybe me about Sandara, and you about a certain lady you fancy. What say you?"

Ana stays silent and merely nods in thanks at the professions of sympathy. She moves to Brightscale and begins a keening song of grief and loss. She sheds no tears and when she is done with the song, she stands and casts several spells. She first casts a spell you have seen often that allows her to tread upon the air and also another common spell that allows her immense strength for carrying. Once done she changes form into that of another spinosaurus, this one having yellow markings in the same shade as Ana's hair but with her gem shaped eyes.

Reaching down, she gently cradles Brightscale in her claws and begins walking on the air up out of the ship. Her gigantic form walks over to the water and gently places Brighscale within, allowing him to sink to the bottom to return to the life cycle, returning the borrowed life energy to the world.

Returning to the ship she says to whomever is there My thanks for your kind words. Brightscale was a wonderful companion to me and I will miss him but do not feel sorry for me or him...such is the way of life. Those of us who are lucky enough to experience this beautiful world can only make sure that our time is well spent upon this plane of existence...for we have an eternity awaiting us in regret for a life wasted. Her eyes briefly stray to Dhaavan first before turning to each of you in turn. Celebrate your lives and each other. Put aside the petty and be truly free men and women. Unconstrained by the burden of past slights, you all have the potential to fulfill the destiny the gods have set for your lives. Take heed though, for the path ahead is not set and is filled with peril. United we are strong, always remember that.

Sorry I wasn't on last night, not feeling well as my ankle is acting up again...three years and two surgeries from the original injury...just sucks so much to be in pain all the time. Anyway enough whinging.

After the battle, Fitch takes a look at the ring and is overcome with excitement. Now all you must do is place the ring on your second finger on your right hand and touch to skull emblem to a piece of the deceased you wish to find. I have the bone here if you wish to proceed with it.

---------------------------------------------

The ship seems to be seaworthy and well taken care of. It is not nearly as fine as the Dread Lady but seems to be relatively fast with clean lines. You would guess this used to be a merchant vessel or something like that.

---------------------------------------------

In the hold you find a false bottom beneath the center of the floor. Within is a 3' by 4' by 2' section of the hull that has been reinforced for smuggling. Within the iron bound box, packed with sheeps wool is a small jet black box of unknown material.

"I am ready. Let us look for this hidden thing and be ready to move on. Sitting in open sea like this is not wise."

”Thy speak the truth, senet. After all, did my hatey-a' not say we were nearly flush against the place called the Sahuagin Coast? Further, is it not so that we are less than a few hours from the port which was governed by the villain whose reign was so dangerous that even the surgeon who resided there desired to flee the place forthwith?” she adds, agreeing completely with Rain’s suggestion that staying so close to dangerous waters could be problematic.

”Indeed; I agree wholly with you that we must work quickly if we are to secure this ship so that it can be piloted and so come under the control what shall one day be our fleet. Why else should there be so much work done to make sure she is seaworthy and ready to sail if we are not to take it as a prize? Ha! A noble plan, indeed!” she adds with satisfaction as the two move below to investigate.

Once the two have gone below and reached the basic place to search for secret compartments via the Psychic Link she received from the dying sailor, she will simply Take 20 on her Perception Check to search that area – though (of course), she’ll first cast “Detect Magic” to seek for any hidden magical wards that would be “below decks” and also use her Take 20 Perception Check to search for any possible traps. Meanwhile, as Rain and Amen-set are now clearly alone and away from anyone else, Amen-set will speak openly, candidly and privately to Rain about a matter which obviously concerns her…

As the two females work to find the location of the secrets below deck, Amen-set speaks softly to Rain about a thing that is troubling her.

”Your pardon, senet, yet I seek thy advice on a matter that is troubling me and I do not know how to proceed. Perhaps, if you are willing, you might provide counsel for me in a hard matter?” she asks Rain tentatively.

Rain, given early conversation I’m going to assume you’re good to hear what Amen-set has to say. However, if I misunderstood, please disregard her question.

Again, Amen-set looks around to make sure that none are listening to them, then speaks softly to Rain.

”As thy know, I am honor bound to obey the orders of my hatey-a'. Indeed, I have sworn an oath of obedience to protect serve him for he is a goodly man and, further, he has cared for and succored me when few others would.”

”This you know is true; yet I must now act on my own code of honor – for though I am sworn to obey him and protect him, if I am able, so it is true that until he gives specific orders to the contrary I must seek to do what I can to help him in any way I can.”

”Know, then, that I believe my hatey-a' is considering murder,” she says with a tight voice but an expression that suggests that although though she doesn’t know that fully, she firmly believes that her guess is accurate.

”Know also that this is merely conjecture; I do not know in truth that he shall perform any dark deed to sully his own honor, I merely postulate that he may be considering it.”

”Further, know that although usually such deeds are black enough to enrage any goodly Deity who may watch over our company… Your pardon, senet, regarding such an action from my hatey-a'; I am certain that though it may vex such a Deity…”

She pauses and looks about, then leans in closer.

Senet, given all that has occurred as of late my heart whispers to me that in the end, though it may displease the gods who pull the strings bound to our Fates… In the end I no longer believe that such beings will seek to prevent such action – should my hatey-a' seek to follow such a course, that is.”

As usual Amen-set speaks with her usual disarming sincerity that would almost make someone believe that she had somehow sat down with a divine being and discussed such a matter over cakes and wine.

Of course, that is a preposterous notion – that Amen-set could know with such clarity the mind or private thoughts of any deity. But no matter how preposterous it may be it doesn’t seem to matter.

For some inexplicable reason she seems to firmly believe her opinions on spiritual consequences for such an action, or their lack, are now wholly accurate.

She glances around and then moves closer to Rain again and keeps her voice low and steady.

”Now; I do not say that my hatey-a' is formally resolved to do this thing. He I obey; yet it is true that on occasion his mind tacks like the winds themselves and therefore he may elect a wholly different course.”

She leans back a little and studies Rain’s expression.

Naturally she can tell that whatever Rain’s opinion might be on this conversation, clearly the matter of “counsel” or “advice” was an issue but – as of yet – Amen-set has not asked for any specific advice but has merely given information.

Fortunately, Amen-set now comes to the point.

”In the matter regarding counsel my question for thee is this: would it be wiser to seek to hinder the plans of my hatey-a' and also attempt convince him that such actions would be folly; knowing that if I should try to gainsay his will then that would be a disrespect to his honor and my place is only to obey his orders… Or; should I remind myself that he is my hatey-a' and that my Oath is my Bond and I have given him my word to Obey and, therefore, I must accept his decision dutifully - no matter how dark it might be - and then commend my life to the Fate that the gods will prepare for me if such a path is pursued?” she asks Rain.

Rain is now able to consider Amen-set’s words.

It is quite clear that for some reason Amen-set assumes quite a bit and some things she may be wrong about; but she believes she is correct.

She assumes that Horatio may decide to do a terrible thing to an unnamed individual for some reason or reasons that she had not spoken about; she assumes that if he does such an action that at this point, though there may be consequences, if he decides to go through with what she is thinking that she now believes that – all things considered – at this point the “gloves are off” and he might be successful; she assumes that if he does what she thinks he is considering that the outcome will not be pretty.

Rain can tell that Amen-set believes that because of the possible outcome, Amen-set would prefer that Horatio does not go through with whatever it is he may be thinking or planning… However; as it’s not really Amen-set’s place to tell him what to do, she feels honor bound to do nothing but support him as best as she can if he decides to go that route.

On the other hand; as she is committed to protecting him, perhaps her Oath instead could be interpreted as a means to prevent him from doing an action that (although it seems likely he could succeed at, given what she assumes his plans are) will certainly have adverse consequences for many individuals.

Also, although Amen-set has been intentionally vague on details it is quite clear to Rain that the girl only does this to protect Horatio.

In the end, it is also clear that Amen-set doesn’t know if she should support Horatio’s plans or suggest an alternative option to him. Of course, as Amen-set is clearly no coward, Rain could probably only assume that Amen-set is more worried about Horatio’s honor than his temporal safety.

As Rain considers all of these things Amen-set simply waits patiently for a response, then she proceeds with her search as she waits for Rain to digest this.

Suddenly her eyes widen and her hands pause over strange part of the deck.

She smiles in wide surprise and casts Detect Magic on it.

As she pauses to study the box, she glances up at Rain.

”We have found something of value, to be sure, senet!” she says, then moves it out delicately and places it between them.

Her hand pauses on the box and looks up at Rain.

”I doubt highly that my hatey-a' would try anything untoward soon, so I ask only that thy should take time to consider what I had asked thee… If thy could offer any advice I should be grateful…” she adds and bows her head in respect for Rain’s help.

GM – at this point I just need to know what I can discern from studying the box. Thanks!

Piper comes on to the main deck with the two Halfling who do work on the gun crew following her. She is wiping some tar from her hands with a grubby rag and chewing on a tobacco quid.

"Well lads and lasses, she's as sound as a pound and her lines are tight as... well, you know," she says with a grin and turns to spit a stream of tobacco juice to the leeward.

"That said; what's the plan now?" she asks even as Horatio comes out from the aft cabin.

He walks over to Adular and offers his hand.

"Hey, just wanted to say - it was a tough fight, but I appreciate all the help. You're a good guy to have around, padre," he says with a firm but sincere voice.

After he hears Adular's response, he glances around.

"So, where's the next port of call?" he asks the others his eyes flicking to Fitch as he pauses to light a smoke.

As he waits for an answer he glances around the deck -

Horatio looks up at Ana with a strange look in his eye, then he nods his head in agreement.

"Hell, to be honest, I couldn't agree more, myself. I mean, we're all here together and I think you hit the nail on the head. If someone turns their back on the very people that they sail with, why... that's a horrible thing indeed," he adds with a sincere voice.

Then he offers the kitsune a very warm and friendly smile.

Adular's channel does it's thing, and Dhaavan heals up aside from some internal damage from the cloud.

Thankee Rain. Figure it's one of my better tricks, although maybe figuring out how to conjure that Chain rather than needing to . . . appropriate it, would behove me. You did a large part of the heavy lifting and saved my arse a couple times there he says, acknowledging her pike with a nod.

Clapping Adular on the back, he consoles best he can, Don't be too hard on yourself brother It'd have been far worse without you. I know I'd not be standing. as he passes the Padre.

He then stands before Amen-set with a smile. I was barely holding up there, sheer arcane will was the only reason I was standing when that twice-damned Babau got me. I'd rather not risk shuffling off this mortal coil any time soon, so... He takes her hand and holds it in his, lifting it, saying, I am most honored to have you watching my back then planting a gentle I very may well have died again without you keeping me on my feet there. He smiles again at the girl. Don't ever think i don't appreciate that

After the burial of Brightscail, as the others are searching and so forth, as there is no crew for Dhaavan to attempt to woo, he waits for a moment when he can speak to Anasrianna in some privacy

Anasrianna:
Ana. . . I . . . I'm so, he tries to begin, before sighing. His face loose the mask of empathy revealing uncertainty and discomfort. I've never felt something like this before, what you're feeling right now. It's really rather, well, the word unpleasant doesn't even begin to cover it. You'll see through any attempt at conciliatory words and I can tell it won't help so... he puzzles for a moment, trying to figure out how he'd respond to a loss like this one, and shrugs. Then he looks at a step, or other place to sit and takes her hand in his, Have a sit. At least for a minute or two?
if he can convince her to, Dhaavan will hist sit quietly with Anasrianna for a bit just looking out at the water, just a hand touching, waiting till it feels like they should be done.

"It's a wise move; she's a two gun-rig; having an escort with cannon to aid the primary ship is never a bad plan. Besides; most of the lads on The Lady do not prefer cannon," he says with a shrug.

"That said, having a second officer on her would be helpful. If you'd like, I wouldn't mind if you sailed on board her too, if you'd like," he adds politely to Dhaavan.

Ana to Dhaavan:
Ana nods at your words Dhaavan before saying I appreciate your honesty Dhaavan. Even if you must portray that mask with others, you should feel no need with me. I would much rather you say what you mean than it be hidden by clever wordplay. You and I are, quite literally, bonded by our souls.

When Ana is mentioned as a possible pilot she says I have very little skill with the wheel. There are others that are far more capable. As it is if you don't mind I wish to be alone for a while. I will follow the ship.

With that she leaps and dives gracefully off the ship. In midair she changes form into a long slender reptilian form with flippers and a long neck and tail. She dives into the water and disappears into the ocean.

With Rain...

I am good enough. Nothing a good night's sleep won't fix. I am glad to hear that you and Neko are sound. Seeing that Rain showed that the blood on her was just lingering remnants of the fight Variel casts prestidigitation to remove any of the mess from her. There, although I can't patch you up like Adular can I can help remove the stains from the fight.

As Rain switches gears to talk about the hidden hold Variel nods his approval. [b]Just be careful there are no traps about it.

At the funeral
Variel maintains a vigil over the ceremony that Ana performs making sure not to miss a second of it. He can't help but feel that the whole thing was his fault for not attacking sooner or getting to Milksop the first time. If he had been able to land that first blow then Brightscales would still be alive. Learn from this he kept telling himself yet it was never that easy.

Aftermath
Variel holds off on the talk about splitting up the group and making a decision until he has thought it through more. To keep from making a quick answer and splitting up the party he goes to focus on the grapnels to see if he can figure out the enchantments that were placed upon them.

Slight Ret-con before Amen-set heads into the hold –

Dhaavan wrote:
He then stands before Amen-set with a smile. I was barely holding up there, sheer arcane will was the only reason I was standing when that twice-damned Babau got me. I'd rather not risk shuffling off this mortal coil any time soon, so... He takes her hand and holds it in his, lifting it, saying, I am most honored to have you watching my back then planting a gentle I very may well have died again without you keeping me on my feet there. He smiles again at the girl. Don't ever think i don't appreciate that

Amen-set’s normally stern face is suddenly colored with a bright blush at Dhaavan’s words and she seems a trifle embarrassed and very pleased at the same time.

She instantly attempts to recover with bluster, but it is clear to all that she is obviously delighted with Dhaavan's attention, though she tries to hide it.

Imi-ib, it is a truth that thou art no swordsman or warrior, yet thou art possessed with great courage! Indeed; thou boarded the enemy vessel and then rushed into the frey like a djinn of the wastelands! And then, when my hatey-a' was in danger below the decks, thy feet did not falter and you rushed to save him with no sword; no spear; no shining shield – only thy heart and the strength behind it, even though such actions may have cost thee thy very life!” she beams, clearly impressed with Dhaavan’s bravery and audacity in battle.

”I regret only that I was not at your side when that demon stood against thee. Indeed, it is a truth that there is nothing greater than when a small force stands together against overwhelming odds and then – when all seems lost – emerge victorious!” she says with open satisfaction.

Then, as she watches his eyes, she cocks her head.

”Do not fear Death, Imi-ib; my heart tells me that the gods have other, greater plans for thee, no doubt,” she says with a firm voice, but her lips rise with a small, yet coy, smile.

Then she turns and heads below with Rain to search the hold…

Fast-forwarding to later with Rain –

Amen-set continues to peer at the box, studying it for any signs of magical aura.

As she rubs her chin thoughtfully, she speaks quietly to Rain –

”I say also, Senet, advice is not all I ask thee for in this matter. Say rather, a second set of eyes, perhaps…”

Her gaze narrows as she continues to ponder the box and it’s contents.

”My hatey-a' is not the most intelligent member of our company; nor the wisest… yet for all of this he is still very cunning and full of guile, besides.”

”I have heard that the Northmen of Varisia prize cunning and guile; and while I, too, honor them both in clean combat… Well; in this matter I recall on old proverb from my homeland which can be said in thy tongue – Never trust the smiles of a stranger...

She looks up at Rain for a moment, a somewhat startled expression on her face for vocalizing such thoughts about her honored hatey-a'.

”Know that I do not say that my hatey-a' is a stranger here; nor do fear his smiles. Still, do not the wise also say – There is no harm in being prepared for any eventuality…

Then she turns her gaze back to the box and continues to attempt to seek any magical aura.

After the results for the Detect Magic spell have been given she intends to Take 20 on her Perception Check to search for Traps. If Rain is willing to make an Aid Check, she won't turn it down :)

Horatio turns and studies Ana thoughtfully.

DM Immortal wrote:
With that she leaps and dives gracefully off the ship. In midair she changes form into a long slender reptilian form with flippers and a long neck and tail. She dives into the water and disappears into the ocean.

Horatio watches her dive overboard and he suddenly rushes his hand out, as if to catch her or halt her, but then checks his action and watches her swim away.

Then he turns back to the others.

Adular wrote:
Adular almost manages a blush at that. His passion for his fellow Besmaran Clergy no secret to any on the ship, "Aye. Never let it be said that a Bluuth doesn't make sacrifices. You want me or her on board with you?"

Horatio scratches his chin thoughtfully.

With Ana gone from their company they had lost another healer and he now considered Adular’s offer very carefully.

”Well, I can’t say having another priest on board would be a bad thing,” he says thoughtfully.

”Now, don’t get me wrong, my girl Amen-set’s no slouch with her magic; but even though she’s one hell of a pilot she’s definitely no match to you when it comes to healing,” he adds to Adular with a sincere voice.

”Now, normally I’d recommend keeping the biggest healer with the flagship and the majority of our lads. But, to be fair, I know that the Captain-General’ll will want to be on board The Lady and I know the Pilot-Major will want to be with him,” he says as he glances to the hold where Rain had gone with Amen-set.

Then he looks up at Adular again.

”So if we got me, the illustrious Lord of the Rock,” he says with a bow and a grin at Dhaavan, the smile both respectful and teasing a bit now that the stress seems to have passed ”and then you, well, then we’ll have three officers on The Grave.”

”And in the meantime they’ll have three officers on The Lady,” he says, then nods at Jiro.

”After all: I’m pretty damn confident that Jiro-san would prefer to stay with his Sama; so that fixes it pretty easy,” he adds with respectful bow to Jiro, then gives the kitsune a friendly smile.

Adular wrote:
"As for some ablebodied seamen who aren't gunners, I suggest we bring in at least one old sea dog, and some of the new bloods. Give the ones what ain't used to being the main deckhands and riggers a chance to see what they can do while still having an old pro or two to show them."

Horatio nods at Adular’s advice.

”That’s a pretty good idea; luckily a few of the lads I picked up at Port Peril are pretty damn good sailors already – still; I reckon having a few of the lads we had from the beginning can't be a bad thing.”

Dhaavan wrote:

Horatio glances at Adular thoughtfully as he listens, but then he grins widely at Dhaavan’s final words about Amen-set.

”Hell, m’Lord, don’t let her hear you say that, else in the next fight she’ll be running off to save you more than me!” he says with a laugh.

Then he takes some time to consider Dhaavan’s suggestion about bringing a collection of men aboard this vessel for a moment.

”That’s not a bad plan; the question is; who do we spare – oh, and how many do we need aboard this ship specifically?” he asks.

”Now, I sent my girl Piper around to give this ship the once-over. According to her report The Grave is sound, solid and steady.”

”The way I see it, the best thing is that The Grave doesn’t need nearly the amount of lads to sail her as our ship does; hell, they only got room for a crew compliment of four sailors, which is damn good for us. That means we can probably sail her with only around four lads ourselves – maybe more if we want to get more speed on her and have some lads on the guns, too.”

He rubs his chin.

”Of course, when I had Piper check out the full details on the ship I figured she had the specific amount of sailing lads needed to do it right… I probably just need to recheck her notes on that point, but I got high hopes we can make her work damn good without a lot of backup!”

”Meanwhile, I guess I’ll need to remind Piper to be more clear with her reports in the future,” he adds with a dry cough.

Then he looks up at Dhaavan and Adular, the grin having returned.

”Now while we wait on finding out how many lads need to sail this ship, I got a question on tactics and strategy for you two, being that I got an idea but I’m not wholly sure on how it might work and it’d be good to know any thoughts you two might have…” he says slowly.

”If we get in a pinch, having this ship move to flank with The Lady and poke at whatever threat may be in the middle was my first plan. After all, The Lady can probably take more of a beating while we pepper the enemy with fire.”

”Thing is; this ship is no match for The Lady in speed. So having her move the wide arc to flank will take longer and be trickier; because as good as she is, Amen-set’s not the Pilot-Major…”

”If we made this ship look like the prime target then The Lady might circle around an enemy with greater speed and accuracy to really hammer them.”

”Anyhow, I just don’t know what is better; having this ship circle an enemy or having The Lady circle an enemy. Remember; the one doing the circuling is less likely to take a pounding, so that kind of matters and that’s why I’m not too sure. That said; what do you guys think?” he asks them both.

I guess when the GM tells specifically how many men are needed to sail this ship we’ll be in a better place to know what’s up. Meanwhile I have pretty high hopes; if the ship only required four men to sail her properly then we can assume that she won’t need too many sailors to move her around. The real thing we’ll probably want is gunners, if we plan to use her cannon effectively.

As Rain switches gears to talk about the hidden hold, Variel nods his approval. Just be careful there are no traps about it.

It felt good to be clean of the muck, gore and blood. "I've spent much of my life at sea but I do not enjoy being covered in blood and gore. Thank you for using your magic to clean the cloth. It comforts as as much as a body being healed of injury." She gave her betrothed a warm, somewhat lingering look. When he warned her to caution, she gave a brisk nod. "Between Amen and I, we will be watchful."

Neko remains on the deck of the Dryad with the others. She is occupied with cleaning herself.

Dhaavan wrote:

So mates, we have a second ship to sail again. Let's divvy up the crew, yeah? Rain, pardon my presumption, but am I right in assuming that you'd like to stay aboard the Lady with the Captain?

Rain turned her gaze to the sorcerer upon his question. "Aye, I am the Lady's pilot and will remain with her. Amen has skill enough to pilot the Dryad."

And upon answering, she turned on her heel and went below with Amen.

* With Amen-set below deck of the Dryad's Grave. *

The girl had a lot to say as they searched for the hidden item. Combat often left Rain quiet - thoughtful - but Amen was eager to talk or be given counsel and so she would share her own thoughts on the matter of Flynn.

"I cannot support murder. If Flynn means to do someone harm then I would counsel that you attempt to sway his thoughts to other means of resolve. I do not believe the gods would bother to intervene except of course if it were a foul god who would reinforce a mortal's hand to strike and take a life. But I am no scholar skilled in the divine forces. Killing in battle to protect life or possession is different to plotting and perpetrating murder. I believe if he were to give into his darker moods and take this life you feel he may, then he will be forever changed. So, I say, do what you may to change his heart and mind. Such judgement on life and death is not ours to make or else we will be no different to any cutthroat and lowly pirate."

She hoped her words were answer enough for Amen. Rain understood ire and its lingering effect, yet it did not excuse crime such as murder.

As to taking the Dryad's Grave as a second ship in their fledgling fleet, Rain was content enough in it. "Taking this ship as prize seems befitting, but the others must agree to it as well. They may want to sell her for gold. I cannot speak for them. We must see if we have enough crew to man both ships. I have no idea how many of the enemy crew were killed during the fighting."

Amen-set considers this; she completely agrees with the sentiment, of course, but is not completely certain that it was her place to give her hatey-a' advice, as she is only his ward.

"I shall try; yet in truth, if he is resolved on this matter I am not certain he shall listen to anyone... Yet perhaps he would hear thy counsel better than mine? After all, he has sailed with thee for longer than I; his will be more easily persuaded by thy words..." she says slowly, then looks up at Rain hopefully.

Amen-set cocks her head.

"There were four who were slain - they were in the hold with my hatey-a'. There were no other sailors aboard; we searched the entire vessel, and even if there were some that we may have missed in the fray that somehow eluded us... But no! I do not think that is likely for we were thorough in our search," she says glancing around the cabin "further; there are only bunks for four here. That alone is a good, I deem, for by all the signs it seems quite likely that it shall be very easy to sail this vessel with few men."

"As for selling her for coin? That may happen; but it is certain we cannot sell her until we have taken her to a port. And the best port to take her, for a goodly price, is the port of Quent; for we cannot merely leave her here for it is a certainty that the island we are near is fraught with danger; further, the master of this island is not one to do honest trade with - he may attempt to cheat us, or worse."

She shakes her head, realizing that she was straying to irrelevancies.

"In other words; the ship must be sailed to a port before it can be sold. To do that we must certainly man the ship with not only skilled sailors but - as these waters are dangerous - it must also be manned with warriors; else she may be taken from us 'ere we sell her, assuming the others do not decide to keep her outright," she adds.

Then she looks back the box...

"Senet, can thy tell if the box possess any traps?" she says as she continues to Take 20 on her Perception Check to search for a trap...

Amen-set comes aloft and notices Rain has moved directly to speak to her mate. Amen-set is not troubled, however, confident that the Pilot-Major will aid her when Rain feels it is best.

For now, she moves to Horatio, a small package wrapped under her robes and she moves closely to him and whispers quickly, her gaze flicking to Dhaavan as she blushes under his gaze even as she continues to speak to Horatio. When she has finished speaking she turns to Adular and bows as fellow Servant of the Divine.

Horatio's eyes widen a bit as he glances down at her.

"Will you gentlemen excuse me for a moment? I need to speak to my girl privately real quick... But hang tight; I got a hunch I might be back with some good news," he says with a grin.

After that is doen Variel does indeed contemplate the issue of having 2 ships. It would split the officers and thus the concentration of firepower that they possessed. Yet it would grant them greater options to track down and capture further ships to plunder and take. The gold from the sale of the ship would be nice but right now a fully equipped second ship gave them a back up incase something should happen to the Lady. Nodding to himself Variel seemed to make up his mind and spoke to the others.

If you are all agreeable to the situation then I concur that we should divide up ourselves to run both ships. It seems that you have all talked and planned accordingly already and I agree with your assessment. Rain, Jiro, Sandara and I remain here on the Lady as officers while Adular, Dhaavan, Horatio, Amen-set and Piper are on the Dryad's Grave. While we are splitting our resources we gain much in flexibility and tactics. Even split though we both will have access to primary healing from Adular and Sandara. If that is not enough Jiro and Rain can both heal in a pinch on the Lady while Amen-set can heal on the Dryad. Arcane firepower is split as well with myself and Dhaavan even if Dhaavan has the greater power. The only concern I have is that you do not have a primary person to lead an assault or repel assailants. I trust in Horatio and Amen-set's abilities to attack from range and with Dhaavan's summons I hope that you are all confident enough to be able to deal with any unforeseen situation that might befall you.

Looking around at the officers Variel asks, Do you all agree to this course of action or should we sell the Dryad once we reach port?

Variel is good with however Dhaavan and Adular split the crew as they would know best which crew get along with who and how duties are split. We will have to promote some to fill positions while we are split but tha tis a good thing as I see it. give some a chance to prove themselves and as a reward for good service thus far.

Making a duplicate copy of the Lady for information for the Dryad. Will take some time to compose completely. Imortal if you can send tme the info on the ship I will incorporate it. All plunder/infamy/disrepute will be on the Lady for ease of tracking though.

A strange look flashes in Horatio's eyes, but it passes almost at once.

Amen-set looks at him, but doesn't know if Rain noticed it or was still focused on Variel; however, she certainly intends to speak on the matter later.

Horatio clears his throat.

"I agree wholeheartedly about giving out fair due and rewards... After all, it's only fair that people get what they deserve," he says with a charming smile.

"As for who goes where - we're still kind of figuring that out right now..." he says politely.

Variel, I'm not sure if this is formally the same "class" as The Lady; but that's only because of her crew compliment. Formally the ship was sailed with only 4 Sailors; and only had room for 8 (assuming the sailors did rotating shifts in the crew cabin). However, I'm not sure if 4 is a Skeleton Crew needed or the Total Crew needed; but it is kind of important because it will effect how we divvy up the sailors between ships and we only have a limited amount of sailors. Plus, our next "formal" destination is the place where Doctor Fitch is ready to take us. I have no problem taking both ships there, but I'm still not sure about the crew compliment required for the new ship.

Ok I can't find a decent set of ship stats so it's a sailing ship but 10% worse on every stat and measure rounded down. i.e. worth 9000, goes 90% of the max speed of a sailing ship etc. It does not seem to have been very well cared for and is slightly smaller than the Dread Lady with none of the upgrades you have made to her. Let me know if I missed any questions and sorry if I did. The ship did have a decent number of crew but they were a little undermanned, however Brightscale took out a large number of the crew before joining the fight in the hold. It has a crew requirement of a normal sailing ship.

The black box does not radiate as magical and seems to have no seems. It is so utterly black that instead of reflecting the light it seems to be absorbing it. You cannot find any traps...for that matter you can't find any seams either. You're not sure why but you believe that it is hollow and not a solid cube. It is quite heavy however.

The ship did have a decent number of crew but they were a little undermanned, however Brightscale took out a large number of the crew before joining the fight in the hold. It has a crew requirement of a normal sailing ship.

Good enough! It looks like we'll need more than four to man her, then, sadly. More about that later!

Amen-set stares at the strange item as she and Rain pour over it.

With more information gleaned, she looks up at Rain in both awe and some restrained horror.

"The Black Stone!" she whispers in shock.

She looks up at Rain -

"Senet I do not know if this is the same stone mentioned by an ancient historian in my homeland named Abdul Alhazred, yet if it is, we should be very, very cautious," says the normally fearless girl.

"Indeed, it was Abdul Allazred himself who dared to scribe the text known as Kitab al-Azif! Such knowledge did not come without price; and indeed his life was consumed with madness and he died an unspeakable death!" she says, as if these names and tales were somehow would be known by all, though it was doubtful that anyone in this land knew them.

"Yet between those very pages was the description of a Black Stone... I do not know what this is; but if it is that... Nay! I shall not be too hasty in my judgments. Say rather we must study it further; and in the daylight, and away from dark places..." she mutters the last, almost to herself.

"Perhaps the priestess called Sandara has the power to Detect Evil; for, in truth, I wish to have that cast upon this thing, for surely I do not have that spell committed to memory."

"In any case, we must be cautious... I shall go speak to my hatey-a' about this matter at once. Please know that in all of these things I merely guess; for all we know it could simply be merely a normal stone crafted as an ornate puzzle box..." she says, trying to be more positive; still, her eyes color as she suddenly recalls with some clarity the lore she had heard regarding people that managed to unlock the mysteries of certain puzzle boxes.

Needless to say, she is very nervous at the discovery.

Of course, her entire assumption could all be a bad guess; but for some reason, she does not think so.

"I'll be sorry to be parted from Sandara, tis true, but won't take long to get gear ready. Practicing with the ships seems wise, just in case we run into trouble that'll require them to fight side by side," He nods in agreement with Rain's excellent idea.

At the mention of the Blackstone being possibly evil, he raises a brow, "If she don't have it prepared, a few hours rest and prayer and I'll do it meself."

Rain was careful not to handle the black stone. Her gaze remained fixed on it, studying the stone, as she attempted to recollect any rumour or local legend/folklore surrounding such a stone in the Shackles or beyond, and, what the black stone could be made of.

Thanks Immortal I will get something together later for the Dryad. How many seige engines can she hold inside? (2/3 the amount of the Lady since it is 1 square smaller?

Variel looks on at Neko not sure what to say. She did say thank you yet somehow Variel wasn't sure if he did the right thing of not. Deciding not to press the issue Variel instead just nodded towards her and left to go worry about other matters.

Until the decision to keep or sell the Dryad was confirmed Variel stayed mute on further talk of arranging the officers and crew. It seemed that those previously metioned would help sail her back to port but after that there would be much talk about what to do with a second ship.

As the iron box was brought up and the black box was revealed inside Variel did not look on it in alarm as Amen-set did. Instead he cast his own quick divination finding that it was not magical. Looking around at the others to see if they know anything about such stones Variel draws his cutlass to poke it unless stopped by someone else. He did not plan on touching it himself with his skin but still wanted to test the hardness of the strange material and how much force was needed to move it within the iron box.

Later, when the box is brought upstairs and is being held by Amen as per her previous rp. I'm not sure the box had been made "public knowledge" as yet as Amen had brought it up wrapped and only whispered to Flynn what she held her in hands and Rain hadn't said anything about it either. But since some people have played it out that they have heard/seen etc ... I'll play along for continuity sake. ;)

Rain watched as her betrothed drew cutlass to poke at the black stone box. She stayed his arm, discreetly.

Just waiting to hear back from Immortal on Rain's knowledge checks re the box before she'll say anything more about it. Thanks. :)

Rain, you're pretty much completely accurate :)

Amen-set had it wrapped in her robes and followed Rain upstairs and then saw Rain move to work with the grapples and approached Horatio about it privately to share the information with him first. To be fair, her keeping it private and thus the details vague was mainly because I didn't really have any specific details on it from the GM yet, but no worries :)

Meanwhile, Horatio really has no problem sharing the information with the box with everyone, though as it stands, he hasn't even had a chance to examine it himself, yet.

What's definitely for sure is that he wouldn't want to do any broad examination or study of the item in the open when our sailors might oversee it and have it possibly arouse their own suspicions.

He'd want to keep it secret and private and maybe get us to study it in Dhaavan's "Lab" - or at least a place where we can shut a door with a lock before we start poking around with something like this.

As Amen-set delivers the package to Horatio he listens to her explanation with a featureless glance; yet a thin bead of sweat forms beneath his eyepatch and drips slowly down his cheek as he considers things about it.

Horatio moves quietly to the others and whispers the broad details of the box to them, but he keeps it covered and wrapped in the sheepskin and touches it as little as possible.

So now people know pretty much what Amen-set and Rain found; but only the officers, and none of the NPC's would have seen the item at all at this point (at least, that's the plan).

All things considered, sailors are often a superstitious lot - and even though he felt confident about nearly everyone that they sailed with, there was still the matter of the enigmatic Doctor Fitch...

He was a learned man and well traveled; and he would soon have a great deal of money and the chance to live comfortably and celebrate his "retirement".

No doubt when he formally "retired" he'd share tales of his benefactors with any and all who pass by - and those tales may include knowledge of this item.

Until they learned more he felt it was best to be as discreet as possible...

"This thing does bear examination, aye! But I think we can forestall that for maybe an hour or so until we've shuffled some lads around to this ship and picked a decent port of call," he says with a deliberately loud voice and tone which would suggest to the naive that whatever Amen-set had brought up was really nothing of importance and the rest of the sailors could forget all about it.

Then he tries another tack -

"We're still less than a day out from Doctor Fitch's home port and the captain running that town is pretty dangerous and wasn't home; that means he might be sailing right past these waters... Not to mention the location."

"I mean; we are right near the "Sahuagin Coast"... Just saying, I figure the less we linger here the better, eh?" he asks the others.

"Also, once we get the lads adjusted, where's our next port of call going to be?" he asks everyone, not entirely sure where they'd sail, though hoping that it where Fitch had recommended.

After all, given their new item it seemed wise to offload the wily Doctor as soon as possible. Also, if they did sell this ship it seemed like the thing to do after they went to bring up treasure. Indeed, having a second ship to guard them when they hauled up a fat amount of coin was not only safer, but having a second ship to help ferry the weight of the treasure simply seemed prudent.

So yeah; for now I'm ready to split the crew, pick a place to sail, sail to that point and then once we're anchored somewhere safely we can have all the officers meet together on The Lady to discuss what comes next. Also, by then we'd have a good read on quality of the second ship which might be something to discuss; plus, we'd be out of dangerous waters (hopefully).

Though something tells me no matter where we sail we won't really be out of dangerous waters ;)

Horatio nods at Adular.

"Thanks, padre," he says with a tip of his forelock.

Then he thinks a moment.

"When it comes to Sandara, if she doesn't have the spell memorized already, perhaps we shouldn't involve her with this unless we really need to."

"After all; it might just be a box, but if it is something more dangerous... Well, maybe making sure she doesn't get mixed up in anything that might hurt her, even by accident might better?" he adds.

It's clear Horatio is asking what Adular thinks about Sandara's involvement with this item. After all, while Sandara is probably more than capable of taking care of herself, Horatio has not missed how much Adular cared for her. If Adular was worried for Sandara's safety then Horatio would respect Adular's opinions on the extent of Sandara's involvement in the matter without question.

EDIT: The Aid Check was successful, even with the natural 1; and the history check won't hurt - especially for a native of Sargava who probably learned all about stuff like this when he was a kid in his homeland :)

Horatio glances at Rain and rubs his chin.

”I wonder, I wonder, I wonder…” he says slowly.

He turns and stares north to peer at the distant “Shark Island” and he thinks for a moment.

As he stares at the island he says thoughtfully to Rain and any of the officers nearby –

”Have any of you heard of Moak Harbor?” he asks the group.

”Maybe it’s the archeologist in me, but I seem to recall a little about the place; including that one of their best source of incomes when they were big was selling artifacts... I also seem to recall that the people there got most of their artifacts from inland from the ruins of a place called "Ghol-Gan",” he muses slowly as he peers to the north.

”Ghol-Gan was an ancient city that existed long before even the Alzanti,” he adds by way of explanation.

”It’s said that the folk living in Moak Harbor had been making a lot of coin by looting and then selling artifacts that came from those ruins… The harbor used to be well-populated and thrived long ago; until about two-hundred years ago when the Sahuagin rose from the seas and destroyed the town, sinking much of it beneath the waves…” he says with a sardonic gleam in his eye.

His mind tacks back to the monstrous creatures which rose from the sea the day that he and his companions were – altered – and he suddenly wonders about the creatures of the dark depths below them; their powers; their strengths; and what lengths thay may go to retrieve something that had been taken from them.

Then he shakes his head of those superstitious thoughts and simply goes back to musing aloud.

”Maybe we met these lads and their boss with all the demons when they were coming south from the ruins of Moak Harbor… Maybe they found something they shouldn’t have there… Maybe they got their hands on an artifact that dates back a long, long time and were trying to smuggle it to a good bidder before they ran into us… Maybe what we got might be worth a lot of money to the right people,” he adds with a strange look at the island.

Then he shrugs and turns to Rain and grins.

”Oh who the hell knows, right?”

”I’m just guessing; for all we know that’s just a fancy box for chocolates,” he says with a laugh, though the laughter does seem a bit forced.

Cool; so how many sailors can we spare on the second ship at this point so we can get the hell out of here, then drop anchor later and study this thing properly?

Meantime, GM? If we open this box and discover nothing inside but tasty nougat, I swear by my pretty, floral bonnet that I will end you! ;)

Neither one of you Rain or Flynn seem to remember any legends that are specific to a box like this but Rain...you are pretty sure that this material...whatever it is...is not native to Golarion. It could be made of an as yet undiscovered skymetal like adamantine or something like that but you aren't sure.

As the crew begins to move between vessels and get things properly situated, Horatio rubs his chin thoughtfully.

His opinions about having a second ship already made clear, a sudden thought occurs to him and his eyes widen then narrow.

"Oye! I'm good to go to get this loot, but what about Ana?"

"She doesn't know where the loot is, or where we'll have gone or how to find us. She just lost her friend; if she comes back here and finds us all gone, too..."

He punches the gunwale in frustration.

"Damn! Does anyone have a way to track her, or leave a message for her?" he asks the others.

As the officers continue to discuss things and make plans, Piper comes striding up to them with the other two Halflings and tips her forelock to Horatio.

”Begging your pardon, chief, but she’ll be sound as a pound soon enough.”

Meanwhile, after doing all her work, she pulls out a small pipe and begins to load it with tobacco which is hanging from a bag dangling around her neck.

When she is done and the pipe lit, she leans back and tosses it to one of the Halflings, who catch it deftly and draws his own pipe out and prepares to share the smoke.

Not privy to discussions or comments of the officers, she is comfortable in simply doing her job – and for now that job is making sure this ship is ready to sail.

As that is on her mind, she stares up at the mast for a moment, and a frown is on her face.

”Oye!” she bellows to one of the sailors getting stuff together – ”strike those poxing colors! This ship’s now the gods damned property of a new company!”

”When that whoreson Harrigan, or any other motherless sod who hears some bleeding scalawag jawing about who we’ve become, then maybe hearing we got two ships under our flag’ll make him think twice!” she says, then lets blows out a stream of tobacco smoke and turns to look at the officers.

”Begging your pardon, chief, hope I didn’t overstep my bounds there, but I figured – well, at least while we sail her – I reckon it can’t hurt our reputation none to let folks know we’ve got the beginnings of a fleet,” she says with a wide grin.

Taking a tug on her pipe, she cocks her head.

”Speaking of which – if you’d like, I can make a new flag for this rig by the end of the day so that folk will know who we are.”

”Unless, of course, ye’re looking to keep false colors for a bit?” she asks the others with a curious expression.

After Flynn openly brought up the black stone box she had discovered alomgside Amen, Rain shared her own findings,

"The material the box is made from is not native to Golarion. Mayhap a skymetal such as adamantine, but alas I do not know much more."

Flynn wrote:

"If Ana is still within a hundred feet from us, Neko could send her a telepathic message, letting the druid know where we are headed. But does not Ana have a bond with Dhaavan and they can find one another? I thought she said they were soul bonded...That's how she found us out at sea when the sorcerer was resurrected."

Party: So, we're headed to the wreck which is due north of Shark Island - less than a day's sailing?

And Immortal, did Variel and Rain figure out how to release the magical grapnels? We made a spellcraft roll and aid for it (Total 22).

Horatio glances at Rain and nods.

"Interesting; I wonder if it's from Numeria?" he asks thoughtfully, thinking of the nation which bordered the River Kingdoms and famous for such unusual items which fell from the heavens.

However, something tells him that such a possibility won't be so simple.

His eyes narrow and he leans forward to make sure only the officers can hear.

"On the other hand there a lot of places besides Golarion - such as the Planar Realms... Who knows? This stone could be aligned to a Plane that exists beyond the realms of Men and Elves; a place that Ancient Ones congregate in, only to pass between worlds into our own and - once here - lurk in deep places under surface of the world and sea and when they rise to tread through our realm their very footsteps echo nothing but madness for any who cross them..." he says softly.

Then he leans back.

"On the other hand - it could be anything. That was just a hunch, on account of the creatures we saw before; I kind of wondered if their might a connection, odd as that might be... But probably not," he says with a relaxed voice and tone for any third-party-bystanders.

"That being the case, do you want to get the ships started and meet around the north side? We have some daylight left and if we have to drop anchor for the lads to sleep we'll likely want to make use of the rest of this daylight."

"Then, once we moor our ships and study the area a bit we can figure out what spells will be good to memorize for tomorrow and then spend some time trying to figure out with this box is really all about," he says and glances at the others.

"That said; is our destination best reached by sailing west around the island - or north? Once we know that we can get going," he adds with a grin.

Thanks for the info, Immortal.

It was good that the magic that once held the ships together had gone with the death of Milksop. Rain had no difficulty with the ordinary chain grapnels.

She would not release them all until the officers and crew were split up between the ships and they were preparing to leave/sail.
