It is true that Piper may be able to cut the sails to fit The Lady more precisely but I am still wondering if we got her silk material if that would be better. It is what we had before the sails were destroyed and I would like to see them replaced. If Piper is unable to do the task the pn we will have to purchase them outright.

Variel is not trying to sound condescending towards Piper he is just not sure what her time constraints are and if she would be interested in making the sails for us. The sails are 1500 to purchase or 500 gp to craft.

Private conversation b/w Rain and Variel moved to Social RP Board.

She noted Variel's question about the sails and before she could answer, Flynn had interjected and Rain responded to both males,

"I made any alterations I could before the temporary sails were put in place. They will do, for a short time, but the Lady does require specially made sails, customed to her frame, if she move as she once did upon the sea."

Horatio takes out a smoke and pauses and lights it.

"Look, I don't know who was doing what with the crafting or repairs, I was taking a nap."

"Piper told me that they weren't fixed fully, but that's all I know."

"For what it's worth, even though she's not as handy as the Pilot-Major at fixing sails properly, she can still make a go of it while we're in town. It may not be as great a job, but she won't have much else to do when we're in town; unless we're considering buying something like Silk Sails, or unless you'd like her to work on something else?"

"Worst case scenario is that she gives it a swing and if it fails, we just buy new sails. If it succeeds then we can save a little money," he says glancing between Rain and Variel.

"Anyhow, that's my thinking; you guys let me know what you want to do and I'm good either way."

As Horatio turns he notices that Seijiro has left the ship alone; while the kitsune has not told him where he had planned on going, Horatio figures that the party is formally splitting up again, so he turns to Amen-set and motions her, grabs his kit and heads off the ship.

Before heading off, he turns to look back at Variel.

I don't know what town we're at; what the town looks like; and since we're not actually docked in port I'm not sure how Seijiro managed to leave the ship. However, if he's gone then that's his call; but it seems that we're splitting up.

But Horatio would at least like to know what town we're in before formally exploring.

Flynn, in Rain's earlier rp she docked the ship in port. I really don't want us to "split up" once we get into town ... Maybe Jiro slipped away once we were in town to make his quieter inquiries (using his bluff).

The town we're in is Beachcomber on Bag Island - Immortal mentioned it earlier in his narrative. Hope that helps. :)

That's true about the docking here, though I kind of wanted to get a few more details about the "Lay of the Land". Like, is there a garrison here; a navy; how many ships on average in the harbor; how big is the community; racial make-up; alignment; general points of interest and so on.

You're right, too; the Hobbits gave us quite a bit of information via Beachcomber though it wasn't formally shared at the time.

If this is a big town Horatio would go see the harbor master or some type of port authority and figure out the docking fees for the ship. But all things considered he's not going to leave the main company and instead just hang around with you guys, though he may be standing on the wharf at the end of the ship's gangplank :)

No, not realy; remember that we were dropping the Hobbit family off after Quent but before the last island? The GM had that scene fast-forwarded a lot as the entire family was taken to Bag Island and simply let off when we got there. I put a summary of our dates/times/locations up a few posts ago; but according to the GM it would have happened on the same day that we left Quent.

Horatio won't really split up; though he'd wouldn't mind stopping off to say hi to Halfling Family and see how they're doing at some point.

So the halfling family would have resettled as soon as possible outside of Beachcomber due to how rough and rowdy it is. They are simple folk and would have been directed to one of the halfling villages dotting the southern part of the island. The south of Bag Island is grassy plains, rolling hills, and sandy shores but the north of the island is craggy and dotted with thick patches of rainforest. The lazy river Libera feeds several hot marshy areas which are home to venomous snakes, oversized insects, and giant amphibians. It is said that manticores and even a black dragon have their lairs in the marshes.

From Jiro's hints and innuendos you are directed to the Temple of the Hidden Name. The town of Beachcomber on the Bag Island in the Shackles is mainly inhabited by halflings but also a large number of liberated half-orcs live in its Lurker District. The port is rowdy and shady characters are often attracted to the town. A increasingly bold temple to Norgorber is located at the north edge of the town, and it is said that secrets tunnels beneath the temple lead to the vast catacombs under the town. Despite the freedom of religion on Bag Island, most of Norgorber faithful still hide their identity. The two priests of Norgorber in town are Antal Armskeep and Black Gnarea and they almost open about their faith. They jointly command the ketch Darkbow. The priestcaptains are brutally efficient at hunting and destroying slave ships. The captured slavers are often sacrificed to Norgorber.

As they approach the temple, Horatio indicates that once the gang wraps up this mystery on the island he'd like to pay a visit to the Hobbit family just to see how they're doing.

When they reach the temple and hear the tales of the exploits of the priests he offers them a small donation of 100 GP and a single Red Rose.

For now he remains silent, letting the others speak to the priests.

You find the "temple" in a nondescript warehouse in the Lurker district.

Inside the warehouse, you are met by a halfling dressed in the black clothing of an indentured servant of an aristocratic household and wearing
a cherubic mask. The obsequious halfling silently guides you to a discreet
soundproofed room in the back of the warehouse. Once there he turns to you and says simply, My name is Slip. How may the Temple of the Hidden Name serve thee?

Horatio turns to look at the others, then he looks at the Halfling before him for a long moment wondering long about the motives and inclinations and plans of "Slip".

His mind tacks to the ultimate purposes of Norgorber and weighs those policies against the immediate work done to aid those who have been enslaved.

He wonders which of the aspects of the faith that this one follows and what ultimately has brought the Halfling to follow the dark god.

For now he leans back and waits for the others to speak.

Dindreann had informed them that she had no contacts within the priests of Norgorber. If they were to gain information about any Chelaxian invasion then the best, possible source would be someone higher in the clergy ranks.

She looked to the Halfling servant, Slip. "Good evening, Slip. We would like to speak with the head priest of the temple. The matter is of a private nature and we would rather speak of it directly to the head priest, or one of the senior clergy, if you would be so kind as to announce our presence. We are the Free captains of the Dread Lady, recently come from Quent."

Horatio maintains an almost forced position of nonchalance. This was not due to how Rain spoke to the Halfling; indeed, her diplomatic skills were masterful – her tone, her inflection, her entire bearing was wonderful.

Instead, his aloof position is intentional because he is genuinely nervous before this Halfling. It was one thing to deal with thugs in a whorehouse brawl, or to wade into battle against the threat of cold steel; but he knew at least enough about Norgorber to feel an almost palatable sense of apprehension before the dark-cloaked figure.

Blood and battle where one thing, but sorcery and dark gods where a far different story, and one whose ending was often discovered on a trail which ended in madness and horror…

For now he pondered the names that were mentioned, though, wondering if he could guess the importance of Antal Armskeep or Black Gnareathose.

Horatio averts his gaze from the priest and glances around him into the shadows. He had heard Rain's courtesy and now wondered if the others were going to come to the point and speak to the priest directly and pose what questions they have.

Would that the Pilot-Major knew more of Norgorber; his own priests are an enigma from their worshippers so that they may perpetrate their dark plans without anyone knowing the truth of their nature.

If this one before is such a priest…

He says nothing, though, and merely glances around the room, his eyes marking the exits as he stares through the gloom of the dim chamber.

Flynn:
Norgorber is the god of Thieves, Assassins and the Keeper of Secrets. Norgorber attempts to stay neutral in dealings with other gods. Abadar, Cayden Cailean, Erastil, Iomedae, Sarenrae, and Torag view him with disdain and will have little to do with him. A deceptive deity, he has been known to aid those who do not support his ideals as long as the end-result is to his benefit. Halflings are embarrassed to admit that some of their race worship Norgorber: those who have turned to crime and those that are disenchanted with their normal role in life. There are enough such halflings that small halfling-only cults exist. Halflings of Norgorber often retain a loyalty to their halfling communities, secretly aiding them using their dark talents. Most halfling cultists favour the aspect of Norgorber known as the Gray Master, where the rare halfling inquisitors are found; others with a penchant for poison follow Blackfingers. Halflings following Father Skinsaw are as rare as they are mad. The halfling god Thamir Gixx is also somehow linked with Norgorber.

Looking about the room in the back section of the warehouse, Rain could see it was well sound proofed and this afforded them privacy to speak openly with the Halfling. The others had all gone silent and she wondered if it meant they had given her leave to speak on the group's behalf. She continued until Variel would speak.

"Priest Slip, we have been tasked with a politic mission to seek any and all knowledge of a Cheliaxan threat within the Shackles. We were advised that perhaps the good priests of Beachcomber could bestow upon us information on spies of Cheliax within the Shackles. Are you able to aid us in this, sir? And in return, we are willing to recompense you for any pertinent information you may possess." Rain gave the Halfling Priest a cordial, reassuring smile - a small token of good will/faith. Dindreann did tell them the priests would require a favour for such information, as she had asked for a favour.

The halfling nods his head sagely when you ask your question and gives a bit of a chuckle when you mention recompense. Ah yes...the Reaper knows much that is hidden...but secrets always have a price. I do happen to know of something that may help in your inquiries. We do not deal in anything as common in money here however. I require a secret and as it happens you're timing is fortuitous because I have a specific secret of equal value that I believe would be amenable to both parties. There existed a ship named the Brine Banshee which mysteriously disappeared several weeks ago. The Brine Banshee was said to have been one of the fastest ships in the Shackles, with unparalleled handling for a vessel its size, which many believed were the result of several potent spells woven into the ship. Discover the secret of it's speed and maneuverability and I will give you the information you seek.

Knowledge Local DC 15:
You recall tales of the ill-fated Brine Banshee, which disappeared west of Shark Island after leaving the port of Ollo. What happened after remains a mystery, but the ship did visit Quent on its way to Ollo, so perhaps the House of Stolen Kisses has a lead on the Brine Banshee’s fate.

”Greetings to thee, Son of the Mask,” she says bowing low before the Halfling.

”In this the task which thy have placed before us I have no doubt that we shall do what we can to bring to thee the knowledge that you yearn for, and with that offering to thee, we shall then be able to barter with the knowledge that thy would offer us.”

”Yet even as both parties shall profit in an exchange of information; assuredly this profit is discovered when our task is accomplished.”

”We shall do what we can, aye; but if thou would disclose to us the names of any who stand in the way of this mission – verily I say to thee; on behalf of the priest of our company yonder,” she says with a nod to Adular ”and indeed, all who pledge to accomplish this task – share with us them who stand in the way of achieving this purpose and we shall discover them and speed them on the way to the realms beyond even as we find for thee the knowledge that thy would seek,” she adds with another low bow.

The halfling is silent for a brief moment before saying Verily thou shall knowest thine foes on thy quest shouldst thou meet them. I have not the knowledge of the gods upon which to make thine enemies known and therefore must send thee forth with the wisdom thusly imparted. Godspeed to thee and thine. He then bows back.

”Many thanks, Son of the Mask,” Amen-set says with a formal bow to the Halfling priest.

She turns from him and moves back to the others.

”The task is given and the orders clear, hatey-a',” she says with a formal voice to Horatio, her eyes flicking to the others momentarily.

”Therefore; let us quit this place and be about our business, for to linger here overlong shall not improve our chances for success.”

She waits for Horatio who looks at the others and after a moment nods once.

”Sounds good to me,” he says, then bows to the priest and turns and leaves.

Amen-set has a small smile on her face and seems most pleased with herself and as she moves to follow Horatio, she pauses to speak to Rain – ”The sky is clear and the wind good, Nebet-i; shall we away?” she says, her eyes glancing at the others before turning back to Rain.

Then, seeing that since Horatio seems to eagerly be taking the priest’s advice and leaving to complete this task she bows to Rain, then bows briefly to the others and hurries to catch her hatey-a'.

Horatio and Amen-set have left the building. If the party lingers we'll find stuff to do in town; if they don't linger than Horatio and Amen-set will go with them wherever they go next.

Horatio stands on the damp mud of the road before the warehouse and lets out a long, slow sigh. Amen-set stands near him, her hands still holding her musket casually – a thoughtful gleam in her eye as she surveys her surroundings.

He pulls out a cheroot and lights it and takes a long, languid draw from it before exhaling. Then he turns a glance to Amen-set and lets out an amused grunt as she turns a startled glance to him, then offers him a shy smile at his reaction.

”Well, what’s next?” he mutters.

Neth 2nd
Time: Roughly 1:00 PM
Location: Outside the Warehouse after meeting with “Slip” – a priest of Norgorber – at the town Beachcomber on Bag Island
Moon Cycle: Crescent Moon; Next Full Moon 25th of Neth
Moon Cycle
Weather Conditions: Warm afternoon, clean skies; weather warm.

Horatio glances at the sky, pondering the time, and takes another pull from his smoke.

He turns to Amen-set.

”I’m sure the others will be out in any minute. Meanwhile, I don’t want to simply wait by the door when we’ve been given a task, especially since my gut tells me that time is pressing…”

He takes another pull from the smoke and taps out the ash thoughtfully.

”Normally I’d like to go shopping; but it occurs to me if we want to get more clues we ought to head back to Quent and check at the whorehouse we visited.”

”That means we’ll likely head to Quent, and that’s only a few hours south of here, even with shoddy sails…”

”So, we go to Quent, should be there by nightfall at the latest, maybe earlier, depending on the Pilot-Major.”

”Once we get there we can offload any unneeded cargo – even the plunder – and broker some good deals for upgrades and gear and maybe some new lads; including some good sails.”

”Also, we can send half the lads into town to take their ease… I trust Quent a lot more than this place,” he says with a suspicious glance at the warehouse behind him.

”Anyhow, after we do our shopping and get the new sails, and maybe some new recruits, then we bring them all back to the ship.”

”By that time the first group of our sailors should be returning from shore leave. At which point we have dismiss the second group and have the first group start working on getting the ship ready; maybe having some of the right officers coach the lads on how to change the sails better, or something.”

”Meanwhile, while that is going on, those who aren’t helping on the ship can go back into town to the whorehouse and get the information on the ship we’re now hunting.”

”Once the lads get the news from the whorehouse, then those officers can just pick up the rest of our crew who’s on shore leave and bring them back to the ship, just as our new sails are up, cargo stored and then we get moving,” he says as he rubs his chin thoughtfully.

Amen-set stares at him quizzically and he sees the look and gives her a wide-eyed expression of innocence after his long exposition.

”Hey now; don’t give me that look,” he says to her.

”After all; I love it when a plan comes together,” he adds, then tips the ash of his cigar.

That’s the plan Horatio thought of; that’s what he would suggest when the others get out.

If all goes well we can be back by Quent tonight (even with bad sails; it’s really close to Beachcomber). We get there; send men ashore for shore leave in Quent. As Quent’s a bigger city and has more resources we should be able to get a better price from the stuff we found; find better gear to buy and when we buy/bargain for it we can take it back to the ship and start putting the sails up, rotate the guys on shore leave and head to the whorehouse and find out about the Brine Banshee. Once we find out more about that ship from the whorehouse, we collect the rest of our group on shore leave; take them back to the ship just in time to discover everything’s been prepared and ready to go and then we set sail to track down the Brine Banshee and away we go after roughly two days from here, tops.

Is everyone cool with that plan?

Amen-set studies Horatio for a long moment.

”Apologies, hatey-a'; why is that thy should seek to push the pace so heavily? Why not simply wait and be patient? Perhaps the others are thinking; these are deep matters, after all. Perhaps they need time to decide the best course of action? Indeed, a hasty step could result in stumbling, which is dangerous to all. Further, is it so hard to endure a modest delay while they consider things so burdensome to us all, and so judge more wisely as the course we shall all take?” she asks him, genuinely curious at his mood.

Horatio turns to look at her, somewhat surprised that she is recommending patience over action. Then he shrugs.

”I don’t know… I mean, I understand everything you’re saying; I do.”

”On the other hand, I think that a crew like ours is kind of like skipping stones on the water.”

Amen-set gives him a confused look.

”Look, all I’m saying is that the less momentum that stone has going for it then the more likely it is to sink beneath the water and not bounce back.”

”I know some folks need time to think things over; and I’m honestly not trying to push anyone, but the way I see it… I don’t know. I’m just doing my best to offer some ideas, that’s all…” he says after a moment as she studies his face.

Amen-set glances to the heavens at the sun for a moment then turns back to Horatio.

”I doubt highly that the Great Father shall let thee and thine and all our company sink beneath the waves if a few are silent for a brief time; yet in truth I see the root of they concerns, too."

"Indeed, thy own mind is resolved; what harm can there be to speak thy thoughts? And if others hear them and gainsay thy suggestions then that is their choice, of course, yet there is no harm in them deciding another course, for you all sail as one and all voices must be heard, too."

”Yet do not the prophets say that patience is a virtue?” she adds, staring at him pointedly.

He looks at her for a long while, then he smiles a little.

”Yeah; I guess maybe you’re right… maybe I’ve been too hasty. I think my idea isn’t bad, but I guess there’s no harm in being patient,” then he leans back and waits for the others.

Cool - so Horatio's suggestion is up and some RP. Talk to you guys later tonight and I hope everyone is doing well today!

After leaving Slip, Seijiro will want to do a little shopping in Beachcomber before boarding the ship...

"I have something I need to get before we return to Quent. If no one has any objections, it shouldn't take me long at all, but I do need a little bit of time to find the right merchant and make a purchase."

"I thought we were in a hurry to track down that ship for the priest in the warehouse," he says with a surprise.

Horatio glances to Amen-set and turns back to Seijiro.

"Well, I guess if you want to go shopping here now then I guess that's your call; but Beachcomber is only a Small Town... you probably won't find gear here more than 1,000 gold pieces at best."

"If you're really hot for buying stuff here before hitting Quent, you could take Amen-set with you; she's got a knack at finding rare gear in small towns," he says with an amicable smile to Seijrio.

Amen-set turns to Horatio and gives him a hard stare and then turns back to Seijiro.

"If thy would require aid; I can help thee," she says with a polite tone as she studies Seijiro thoughtfully.

Amen-set has the Trait Dealmaker which means, basically, if you want to buy something of 2,000 GP here (basically a Large Town) she needs a Diplomacy Check of a DC 20. If she gets a 30 you can find a magical item here worth up to 4,000 GP, if you'd like...

Amen-set glances at Horatio, who gives her the nod, and she looks back to Seijiro.

"It is my honor," she says with a bow.

Horatio takes another drag from the smoke.

"Just as well; given what we've been chatting about inside," he says with a nod at the warehouse behind them "I figure that it might be better to have a second pair of eyes anyhow," he says as he glances around suspiciously.

Seijiro; if you fix a base price for the goods you're looking for with the GM (like maybe 800 GP, for example) then Amen-set will do what she can to bargain the price down a bit so you don't have to pay the full amount. It may not be a lot of savings; but if you don't need to spend more, why bother :)

Preoccupied with his thoughts on the conversation earlier with Rain Variel only partially pays attention to the Halfling known as 'Slip'. As that was the name that Dinreann gave them to pursue it seemed likely this was the same person and that similar accords have been reached throughout the shackles. Names that brokering information between entities was a common resource and each body would know of contacts in the other groups. As such he was not surprised in the idea that they would have to procure information that 'Slip' wanted before he would divulge the information they wanted. Resigned to that fact Variel merely shrugs his shoulders and looks to the other officers that they are ok with the arrangements. If so then he agrees to the deal and that they should return to Quent.

The matter decided, hopefully, Variel is ready to leave when Jiro speaks up about needing to make a purchase. If that is the case then go ahead Jiro. I a believe I will be looking for those silk sails that I talked about with Rain. If they don't haven hem ready then perhaps I can purchase the materials and Rain can work on those.

Turning to his bride to be he poses the question to her, Does this sound agreeable to you, dear? I know it might take some time but I can pilot, not as good as yourself mind you, while you work on them. Then we can get The Lady up to speed as she once was?

I know Rain mentioned willing to spend money to get the sails and Variel is as well. Immortal please just let me know if they are available or the materials are available? If I missed anything in the last 2-3 days sorry.

Jiro, you can find some Jade among the items in the plunder but you will still need to have it made. That said you can find ready made jade jewelry in the town with Amen-set's help.

You all can get the silk sails custom fitted overnight for the original cost of them which would be 1500 gp.

You can definitely get the Lady back to speed that way.

That will take about a day to get them fixed.

At the apparent conclusion of the conversation with the priest, Slip, Rain bowed her head to the Halfling priest and replied, "We will seek out the Brine Banshee and discover the secret of her speed and maneuverability in return for your information of the Cheliaxan plot. Thank you for granting us this audience. Until our next meeting."

She had heard Amen's question but the girl had turned quickly and left to follow her guardian.

Hearing Jiro speak of making a personal purchase and Variel speak of the new silk sails, Rain nodded, "I am agreeable, Var. My bargaining skills are fair, yours are better, but I would say Amen's are more refined. Shall we ask her to help us lower the price of the sails after she is done with Jiro?"

I have no issue if we all went together to shop but Rain and Var could find the right merchant for the silk sails and Amen could meet us after she is finished haggling with Jiro ... Don't want to presume others' actions is all. :)

Ok moving on.

You all get your ship fixed and taken care of overnight. A sailmaker has a team working overnight to get them sized and installed appropriately. Rain is happy as the ship is moving with its customary speed and agility.

You make your way to Quent to drop off the idol. Arriving in the morning you receive word that Dindreann will meet with you at midday. That said you have several hours left before the meeting to do whatever you wish.

Seijiro goes to see Variel and asks leave to go into town on some personal errands. If he's free to go:

He heads off to visit the tailor he saw on his way out of town initially. Finding the item he commissioned finished early, he pays the man not only what is asked but a little extra for the speedy inspiration and completion, and hopefully, wrapping it up as well. Imm, let me know how much it came to so I can subtract it from my coinage

He asks the man, "Have you a scrap of fabric I can have to wrap a gift in, it is very small, so only need a tiny piece."

Having acquired what he needs, he heads off to find Selenia... Then realizing it is still early morning, he stops off and gets something to eat first, so that he doesn't take Selenia by surprise too early. He finds something to do to fill an extra hour or two, perhaps just wandering about town with his packages... and then heads off again to find Selenia.

When he arrives at the temple, he asks politely, "May I speak with Miss Selenia please?"

Having purchased the silk sails to outfit the ship Variel is pleased with the results. The sting to his pride at failing to notice the trap and thus the ruination of the sails was lessened somewhat by having them replaced even if it was at an expense to him. That done he can enjoy the leisurely trip back to Quent to drop off the idol.

When close to port he sees that Jiro has plans for a shopping excursion and while he wants to finish with the task at hand he soon realizes that they are to be delayed anyways. Going back to Jiro he gives the kitsune an inquiring look but does not ask what the young lad is up to. Stay clear of that group that Horatio met up with but good luck finding what you need.

As for himself and with the morning free he finds Rain to see if she wanted to walk along the city as well until the appointed time. Nothing planned or any direction in particular, but as we have the time we might as well stretch the legs and see what this city has to offer. Unless you have plans that is. It is apparent that without Rain being heralded by singing girls upon their arrival, this was a much better welcome in his mind.

Holding Rain's hand and escorting her off the ship he sees Adular and Sandara nearby. We can leave Rosie in charge Adular. That way you can take the esteemed Sandara to visit the temple. Remembering what Adular said upon their leave last time though Variel added softly to him, Just don't forget the 3 gold you need for the tithe.
