Re adular:
[ooc]Sorry, Adular, I missed your post, Dhaavan would nave given you a nod as the ship's bosun that it's kinda your job to maintain discipline, like the assistant Principle, since Dhaavan is more of the cool administrator that puts the "Pal" is vice principal =P.

I don't, Jiro. Figure i should figure my way around some kind of conjuration to help with breathing at least. or maybe i could make something to do it for me as the wheels start churning in the arcanist's mind

I agree with the Cap'n on how to address the risks of the depths Flynn mentioned. There is also only one casting of the spell we got before it'll really take a toll on one of us. We can try to get the Sahaguin sorted out on our turf, and get a look at the cave, then if we find water within, we can cast the spell and use it while we finish them off, after we've taken time to explore and get a lay of the land.

I'd bet the buggers would use a deeper cave entrance, or a hidden one, and we'd burn off all our breathing time down there searching, or we send Adular alone, which is risky if he gets too far away. he thinks grumpily, not familiar with fluid dynamics beyond that they thwartin' his plans

But on the bright side, we're ready and watching out for the Sahaguin, we have a longboat loaded up with our meanest fighters to make sure no Fishmen sneak up from the depths below, and archers and fighters on the deck of the ship. by way of plan for the troops

We can even have Adular search the lowest section we can survive, say 70-100ft in depth. Rain can take the bottle of air and search the depths between 40-70 ft. The rest of us either stay in the boat keeping watch or take turns searching between the surface and 40ft deep.

Surely, they don't know we have the potential to breathe underwater." He shrugs and climbs up on a barrel, sitting cross-legged on top of it, Tomo on his shoulder. "But if we could lure them ONTO the ship where we are fighting in OUR element, that would be different." He peers at Dhaavan and blinks, his huge eyes intent on the first mate of the Dread Lady.

"I don't understand the relation between the cave up on the cliffs and the Sahuagin... they may have nothing to do with each other... People keep talking like the cave above will lead to the ocean below and we don't know that. Maybe I'm misunderstanding, but just saying."

Variel thinks on the suggestions put forth by Flynn. It seems like a good idea Flynn but my concern is we are continually at sea. Will not the continuous exposure to the elements damage both bows and arrows? Would the rags get wet and therefore not take the tar? I ask as I have not considered these possibilities and clearly you have. If you say that we should not have a problem then so be it. We can try and pick up such supplies next time we are in port if we have the funds for it.

It is true Jiro, that there might not be a connection. But if we can find no cave to enter from below the water then our only location of note is the cave above. It is possible as well that we may find the treasure that we seek and can leave here with the plunder without having to fight them. I am just at a loss for any other option right now.

Variel claps Jiro on the back showing that he is not making light of his concerns nor is condescending. If you can think of another option I would be happy to try it.

At Variel's uncertainty over the preservation of the bows and arrows, she added quietly,

Trying for a little brevity in the situation at least Variel looks for Neko as he moves closer to Rain. What say you and me go take a swim Rain? I don't think cats are too comfortable swimming in deep water. It might give us some alone time.

Turning serious though he asks, You are probably the best swimmer outside of Adular with keen eyesight. That is why I suggested you take the middle section. Thank you for agree but I worry I put you at risk.

That is true,Variel responds thinking. And Flynn you said it yourself you are good at mending smaller items. Perhaps, if you are willing to oversee the condition of the weapons and give them a quick touch up when they need them then storing them in a chest on deck would work quite well. Excellent idea Flynn. You too Rain.

"Perhaps a leisurely swim at this moment is not advisable with the Sahuagin nearby", she winks and laughs softly. "But I will hold you to that, after we are done with Sahuagin and treasure."

Noting Variel's now serious expression, she nodded quietly, and added, "Adular has an advantage, but you do not ask anymore of me than you do of him. Every plan has an element of risk. I will be mindful of my actions down there, Var. This underwater search is necessary."

Variel gives Jiro an easy smile with twinkling eyes. Don't worry, I think all of us will either be swimming or in the longboat nearby. It was said for other reasons. Just poking the bear as it were. With the clarity of the water we should be able to see them coming and Adular and Rain can then hurry to the surface where we all can work together.

Variel lifts an eyebrow at Rain when she mentions helping with the bows and arrows. I did not know that you had such a gift as well. Again looking around for Neko, Still keeping some secrets, huh? the laughter in his eyes not fading.

Haha. Ninja'd by Jiro. Okay, changing the post...

Rain's gaze caught Jiro's averted eyes and the flush to his cheeks. She heard his warning of care and she answered seriously, "Will do, Jiro. If things go awry down there, I will signal Adular (or he I) and we shall return to the surface, promptly."

Finishing his talk with Amen-set, he unslings his musket and hands it to her, along with the powder horn and small pouch which she buckles around her waist.

As he walks back, he hears Variel and Rain talking about the possibilities of getting the ship better prepared.

He pauses tap some of the ash of his smoke and takes another taste from it.

”Oh absolutely it would,” he says as he blows out the long stream of smoke.

”Of course, the same is true with any siege weapon on the ship; including catapults and ballista,” he adds with a nod at the weapons.

”But remember; being Ship’s Gunner doesn’t just involve pointing a weapon and pulling the trigger,” he says with a bit of a smile, then continues.

”Generally speaking the Chief Gunner and his “crew” are responsible for doing regular and routine checks on the ship’s weapons. So while some of the lads are busy scrubbing decks or checking the lines, the gun crew would typically spend their time checking various issues with weapons.”

”For example; if a string on either a bow, crossbow, or even a cable on one of the ballista was frayed or weak, the gun crew would be responsible for making sure it’s repaired or replaced.”

”If we had black powder weapons the gun crew would have to make sure things like the flints weren’t pitted and that the firing mechanisms on all the ship’s firearms weren’t worn or damaged. Powder kegs would need to be checked as well, for leakage or damage from storms and so on.”

He takes another draw from the smoke.

”Other things like regular inventory on supplies – much like magic users have spell components filled with mundane, though necessary, items – would need to be kept and refreshed at each port of call, if required.”

”Luckily, in all my time sailing I’ve never had to deal with those specific problems formally. After all, we’re probably no more likely to have bow strings wear out than we are to have leather armor dry out and crack, or the seams of our britches fray and wear thin,” he says with a little smile.

”Of course, having racks of prepared weapons probably won't be useful for much unless we’re going against a large threat. But I guess we’ll have to find out,” he adds.

"Thank you kindly," he says to Variel with a friendly grin.

"Speaking of which; if you'd like, I can help the lads give the rudder a once-over, too. After all, I did pick up a few tricks as a carpenter when I started with my 'sawbones' skills," he says with a nod.

Well, I’m having trouble sleeping, so I figured I’d post, too.

Horatio takes another tug from his smoke and looks at Rain appreciatively.

"Thanks, Rain. Any help I can get would be great."

He glances past the stern of the ship at the dark waters there and his eyes narrow thoughtfully.

"As a suggestion you might one to have a lad nearby to call the fathoms. Generally they're stationed at the fore' deck and will call the depth back to you so that you know how deep things are as we're sailing into them. "But yeah," he says nodding to both of them "If someone in the group can summon a water elemental that'd work out pretty well," he says, then glances toward the First Officer.

Number One; make it so...

He chuckles a little, as if at some private joke, then shakes his head and becomes a bit more serious and glances back at Rain.

"The lad calling the fathoms should be smart enough to make sure that his duties don't cause trouble. Generally he'd be one of your lads, as the Pilot-Major should have a few trained experts like that to pass back information to you while you're sailing that you'd be picking and choosing personally; that way you'd know their skills and be comfortable working them."

"For example, an additional pair of eyes aloft could be giving you details on any oncoming threats so you'd have proper time to plan to direct the course you'd like the ship to go, and possibly the deck-watch to make sure that there's no general threats near the ship, such as something like a dire-shark or something unexpected."

"I've seen pilot's put together a small group of folk that are trusty for just such duties, but again, that's just a suggestion," he adds with a little shrug.

"You know - when the tide's right it comes in hard into an underwater cave and it fores the water up and out through a cave somewhere; looks like a whale is breaching," he says.

GM - at this time, where is the position of the ship relative to the deep tunnel in the water? Did it get dragged out eventually, and if so - how far from where the vine monster attacked?

Finally, what is the ETA on the repair time for the rudder?

I can tell you what I'd like to do, but I need a little more information before I can plan.

Rain stood on deck and waited for Variel's order to undertake the underwater search. She conducted some broken telepathic conversation with Neko who now stood beside her, as if sensing her mistress' heightened emotions.

She had removed any of the bulkier, unnecessary clothing/items from her person (keeping her Mithral shirt on, for it was light and would not hamper her swim) and tightly secured Besmara's Tricorne with a scarf to her head. She kept the now compressed magical pike secured/strapped to her back and the cutlass at her hip, in case of trouble. Rain carefully stowed one of her mage armour potions and a CLW potion, in the leather pouch around her waist, just in case.

Seijiro sighs and looks in the pouch at his side, closes it again and walks over to Rain...

"Rain, I... well, I want you to take this with you when you go down to scout. I don't know how well it will work underwater but it might help if you run into trouble." He reaches into his pouch and pulls out a small flask and hands it to Rain. "It's an invisibility potion and I've never tried to use one underwater, so I'm not sure if you leave an empty but visible bubble inthe water or what... but it has to help some... if you run into trouble that is." He sighs... "Make sure you tell Neko right away if you have trouble and need help... She can yowl her distress or something and we'll know you need assistance... unless she can talk to the minds of others if she wants to... I don't know, but i know you can talk to her and she to you. Anyway, stay safe, Rain-san."

"I think Jiro's worried about us, Rain. Assure him you'll keep me out of trouble, won't you? It'll put both our minds at ease." It's clear Adular's good humor has returned

Quick cut ahead.

You take a swim and go as deep as you can until you start to feel the pressure building upon your ears. You are unable to find any sort of entrance and realize it probably is very far down into the hole if it is there are all. They may have come in from outside the cove as well to attack, who knows at this point. Suffice it to say, nothing of note is found.

Rain watched Jiro approach and fish something out of his own leather pouch before handing it to her.

"I will hold onto it, and, aye, if there is a chance I will need to use it, I will take it. Thank you, my friend. And know, Adular and I will have each other's back down there. I will not forsake him in time of trouble and he won't me." She silently wondered how she would go at the lower depths without the boon of Adular's magical vest, but pushed the thought aside for now. She would not leave Adular at the mercy of the Sahuagin.

At mention of Neko's ability to communicate, Rain reached out a hand and touched Jiro's sleeve, "I will reach out to Neko via our link, but know this, she has communicated to Variel via her telepathy before and may do so again, if she fears for my safety. Aye, the telepathic message is not always intelligible for there is a block at present but Neko does not need to say much to make him understand." She was grateful for the kitsune's concern and assistance via the potion and let go of his arm.

Rain added the invisibility potion to the leather pouch at her waist.

Turning to all the officers on deck, "Sandara is taking the wheel of the Lady, I am told. How far out will the ship be dragged? Or is the Lady staying put until Adular and I return from our swim?"

Just saw the GM's quick cut ahead and this would have happened just before then. ;)

Immortal, so Adular and Rain are back on deck now, having discovered nothing in the deeper water we could swim in? How much time has passed, please?

I don't think we were moving the ship til you returned... and then we were going to consider perhaps going to the skull cave? Though Seijiro is reluctant to leave the ship without its officers in sahuagin waters, I believe he's been 'overruled' by the group.

Horatio, I didn't realize it was decided to tow the ship out since that wouldn't give you any benefits and would actually make the work of fixing it harder. If I'm mistaken let me know. You guys need to give me a clear cut consensus on what you are doing. In the future maybe give me an ooc vote so I can be clear or something.

Horatio looks at her and nods.

"You know, that's a damn good question, Pilot-Major," he says thoughtfully.

As I understood, we were not able to sail the ship until the rudder was fixed. Meantime, even if we elect to drag the ship, I don't really know where we're planning on going at this point; but I am still curious where it will end up.

However - Luck favors the bold...

Horatio pulls out his kit and takes a moment to reload his pistols with the ammo from the powder horn that Dhaavan crafted him.

He stuffs the gear in his belt and takes his kit and tosses it to Amen-set; who is currently holding his musket.

Not sure where Variel is at this point, he turns to Dhaavan -

"Well, Number One - I think that the cave with the golden tooth is worth checking out. I know the ship can't sail without a rudder but I have no knowing where she'll end up."

"Anyhow, I'll talk to you later!"

At this point he nods to Amen-set, who slings his kit over her shoulders and leaps over the side of the vessel; naturally, no splash is heard at this time.

Horatio then follows suit and leaps over the side of the ship; hits the water and starts a leisurely stroke, swimming toward the location of the cave on the rock walls.

Jiro, Rain earlier had said it was not a good idea to leave the ship in the Sahuagin waters (when Variel first asked for opinions), so she agrees with you. Thanks re the position of the ship currently. :)

Immortal, thanks for the answer of time lapse.

Well, I'm not sure about possible benefits or penalties. I know that if the threats came out of the dark water behind us, then being "parked" over that spot may not be a good idea, but that was only a hunch. I might have seen too many clips with Dire Sharks lately, but if the water is shallow enough, I'm hoping we don't get jumped by a monster that needs 600 feet of water to survive. Anyhow, that was the only possible "benefit" I could think of to moving the ship. It may not be worth it, but it seemed appropriate in-game.

I also recall that you mentioned on our arrival that there were some small beaches near the side of the cliffs; more specifically near the cave mouth that had the Skull Symbol in it. I figured that since the water was very clear and only 40 feet deep and since it is now (roughly) 1:00 PM and we have plenty of daylight, that if the ship had been towed to one of the beaches that it would be easier to defend against enemy attacks as they couldn't "pop out" of the dark water behind us.

Normally Horatio would have asked to borrow a long-boat, but he figures at least one will be needed to tug the ship; unless the ship stays there and anyhow, they're not his boats.

That being the case, he has no interest in entering a dark tunnel underwater at this time so he's planning on checking out the caves. For now, Amen-set is covering him from above.

Please let me know if that's okay.

Nope, that's the mouth with Pharasmia's gold tooth. We're going in that cave up there, he says, pointing to the cave corresponding to the eye that Wolfe lost. Wayword orb, from the rhyme, we go in the cave that is would have been the Beast's missing eye. Dhaavan haply informs his fellows.

All the waters are Sahaguin waters. I'm fit whatever makes fixing the ship easiest, were likely safer from the seas in a protected cove as opposed to open copy seas, I assume?

Slight ret-con

As Dhaavan points out where the rest of the company is thinking of going, he nods and grins.

"Sounds good - I'll see you up there, then."

Thus endeth the ret-con.

Quick aside; well, I was more worried about attacks coming out of the deep waters behind us, rather than a possible threat on the seas that don't really have any ships on them currently.

But this is all speculation on my part; I have no idea what's out there.

No, not formally alone. But I figure that I can't handle the deep cave behind us; and anyway, there's not much to do on the ship for me right now. But the water around the edges of the cliffs are clear, shallow, and it's not that past mid-day.

If you'd like to join me, I have no problems with that, though.

Rain swam her way back to the surface and then climbed aboard the Lady. She saw Adular break the surface not too long after her. From the current position of the sun, it seemed she had been under for about half an hour.

Shaking the water from her person and eyes, and catching her breath, Rain looked to Adular beside her and then reported her findings to the others, "If there is an entrance, it's much further down in the hole than Adular or I could swim. The Sahuagin could have swum in from outside the cove -- but we cannot say for certain on either count. I saw nothing down there."

Just rped it out to make sense and we can continue...I hope that is okay.
