The demons all back up from their respective opponents, dodging and weaving to avoid suffering attacks.

No aoo's from their movement due to acrobatics.

At which point one of them looks at Variel and the frost slides off of his weapon. Another one looks at the dire bat and it too winks out of existence. The third one slaps his hand on the ground after this and a globe of darkness falls over that corner of the roof. Since it was already dark out, even though I wasn't really enforcing the miss chance, it is now fully dark in that area. You can still see one of them from the glitterdust however but those without darkvision cannot see the others at all.

You all are up!

Horatio they will actually be up for a total of 11 rounds due to abilities she has.

Male Human Guns. 1 (Mysterious Stranger), Fighter 1 (Lore Warden), Bard 6 (Archaeologist) - Barbarian 1 (Urban) Mythic (Champion) (AC 20 / HP 82 / F +9, R + 10, W +7 / Ini + 3 / Perc. +16)

Not sure how this will work via abilities; if it can’t work please tell me and I’ll try something else. Thank you.

Also, did Amen-set avoid the tentacles with her Fly check?

Meantime, here is Horatio’s action – please tell me if it works, if not, he know enough about his balde to try something else.

Horatio uses a free action to reload his pepperbox.

With “Quick Draw” he draws his sword – the enchanted blades shines brightly in a 20 foot radius.

Assuming he can see at this point – can I get a listing of the enemies in the area?

Thank you.

EDIT: Just saw the battle map. So - Horatio will not draw his sword this round as it looks like the darkness is no where near him but instead on the other side of the map. Instead he moves to O:27 and heals Rain with "Cure Moderate Wounds.

2d8 + 4 ⇒ (5, 8) + 4 = 17

He knows this puts him in a dangerous position as they're all clustered together, but he still believes that Rain is the person who is in danger the most and he can see that she is hurt badly.

"Come on lads, press on! Stick together and we've got that whore beat!" he calls out hoping to encourage the others.

"Adular, lad - no hard words on your goddess, but I got a hunch we'll all need her real soon," he adds with a steely gaze on the black sphere that houses the sorceress, sensing more of her foul powers at any moment...

Female 7 - HP: 61, AC: 19, (Fort: 6, Ref: 3, Will: 9). Initiative: +1, Perception: 13/15

GM - assuming Amen-set did not get touched by the tentacles last round, she is going to move to R:14.

Fly check -
1d20 + 1 ⇒ (13) + 1 = 14

If she did get hit, please let me know; it means that she will need to try to do a cure spell on herself or something.

I believe this is now the eleventh round since she cast it, but I don't know. Please confirm on that.

Human - (Status: normal) Varisian Sorcerer 5 (HP: 56/56, AC:21(14/19[+2]) /F:8,R:8,W:9 / MP: 5/5 / Init. +2 / Perc. +5/6(3))(Jack's Perc: +13/+15)

I can't check the map right now but Dhaavan is going to Scorching Ray the gitterdusted Babau, and his hellhound is going to attack the one Flynn shot, revealing the square it's in so someone has it located and can swing. 50% miss chance but I can't fix the darkness at this point.

acrobatics: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (14) + 8 = 22 to avoid an AoO

Hopefullly the sound reveals where a Babau is and someone can attack. Kitsune get Darkvision by chance?

Adular, you factoring in your headband Wisdom bonus? Just wanna make sure.

Using 'realistic likeness' feat to make himself into a copy of Rain. Next round, he will use his 'disguise self' sla to complete the transformation so his clothing and gear look like hers, even down to the necklace she wears... His plan is if there are two identical Rains, she won't know which one to target and will have to split attacks between them... Hopefully this will take some pressure off the real Rain

the glitter dusted demon was at half speed from Rain's crit, where is he and did he still have an action once he got there? I know I can't see the others but if the one that is glitter dusted is a 5ft away then Variel could attack him twice. If the demon is more than a 5 ft away then his focus is still on the sorceress.

Dhaavan, first ray misses. The second one hits and does a little bit of damage. He's still up though. Also, anyone without darkvision won't be able to see the square the hellhound is attacking to pinpoint the square. That said, I will give them a shot at spotting the square but it'll be hard.

Yep he only moved 15' so he was still able to do it. Spellcraft check doesn't make it.

Adular: You can't actually see two of the demons to unselect them from the channel so you are going to hit them too. The glitterdusted one you can remove though so he doesn't get healed.

Male Elf Slayer 4

Well, seeing how badly everyone else was hurt including him, I don't think he had much of a choice. Sorry folks.

He knows it is a longer time to cast but the hope is that he either finishes or the sorceress tries to escape during the process. If she does, then Variel will gladly attempt the attack on her and keep concentrating on his spell if it means damaging her more.

This is factoring in Flynn's CMW spell and Adular's channel (if that's still going through, as I wasn't sure what was decided).

The glitterdusted Babau that Rain had hit before, Imm you said he was 15 feet from Variel currently. Does that mean he's the one at S:33?

Feeling the healing touch of Flynn and the energy wave of Adular, the majority of Rain's wounds begin to knit and heal and relief begins to spread cross her face. Her HP is now 43.

In softly-spoken Elven she says, "Thank you, both."

Through their telepathic link (100 ft range), Rain asks Neko, //I need your help, dear one. Your keen eyes in the dark in particular, to locate the enemy, Neko. We are on the roof. But do not venture far from the stairwell. I would see you have some cover against these fiends.//

Neko has darkvision and Rain can use their telepathic link to pinpoint where the demons are in the dark corner of the tower. Neko's currently hiding on the third floor, so will it take 2 rounds to get to the roof, Imm? I'm not sure I want her to use her last teleport for the day. So she can walk it.

If Neko agrees, her actions are:

Using stealth to make her way up to the roof via the stairs,

Stealth: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (7) + 12 = 19
Stealth: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (13) + 12 = 25

Peeking out from the second last step of the stairwell (She's up on her hind legs) at Q:26, Neko sees Rain and looks across to the dark side of the roof to determine where the enemy is located to advise Rain of their location.

Perception: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (16) + 8 = 24 (I think she can see all of them at her current position as darkvision is 60ft.)

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Rain's momentary actions:

Rain pondered the depth of the significance of the Deep Platinum amulet about her neck. To go to this extraordinary length to retrieve it - to target her - Rain - because she was the current owner and wore it, meant she had to determine if she should rid herself of it or attempt to destroy/injure it.

Knowledge, Religion: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (10) + 8 = 18

Hearing Dhaavan, Rain responds quietly , "Aye, you will have cover."

Okay, I won't be able to post all that much before I have to leave soon.

Taking a 5 ft step (free action) to Q:29, Rain attacks the glitterdusted demon for she can at least see and reach him with her extended pike while she waits for Neko to get closer to their floor.

With two hands on her magical, extended 20 ft pike, she strikes out at the glitterdusted demon at S:33?.

Power Attack (two-handed, with Lead Blades spell): 1d20 + 8 - 2 + 1 + 1 ⇒ (13) + 8 - 2 + 1 + 1 = 21 (+1 from Jiro's inspire, +1 from Freebooter's Bane)
Damage, if hit: 2d6 + 10 + 1 + 1 ⇒ (3, 4) + 10 + 1 + 1 = 19 (+1 from Jiro's inspire, +1 from Freebooter's Bane)

quick ? Immortal, does black tentacles have a miss chance because of mirror image? A CMB check is the same as an attack roll which in the description it says mirror image needs to be taken account for. However it also says area of effect damaging spells are not affected by mirror image and the images remain. Just wondering. If mirror image does work here is the roll. 1d5 ⇒ 2

Going to the Lifelight festival and won't be back till late. Posting two options based on Immortals ruling to the above question.

mirror image does not work:

Concentration for damage 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (10) + 14 = 24
Concentration for grappled 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (15) + 14 = 29 if both successful then enlarge Rain to give her reach with her pike
CMB to escape 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (17) + 8 = 25
Move action to climb on top of the dome if freed and out of the reach of the tentacles

mirror image does work:

Variel finishes his spell enlarging Rain and double moves to P26 drawing a dagger as he goes.

Island of Empty Eyes Map Current Map

Variel: Enlarge Person is a 1 round casting time spell so you can start it this round but it won't finish until next round and you won't be able to move. It's not a standard action unfortunately.

Seijiro takes a good long look at the situation, takes in the measure of Dhaavan's distance from others with his wand of grease. He determines that Variel is the only one out of reach of Dhaavan's wand, meaning Dhaavan can help free all the others except Variel.

Hence, he makes himself incorporeal (4/5 uses for the day now gone), casts grease on Variel and moves to S26, 30 feet from his current location.

As he passes Dhaavan, he speaks so as not to be overheard by the caster. "Dhaavan, I got Variel, but I'm out of grease spells. Freeing the others is up to you now."

I stArted the casting last round as I just took a 5ft step next to the shield bubble spell. That is why I made the concentration checks for both damage and grappling as they occurred during the round that enlarge was being cast. Hope that explains things.

Since Variel posted his actions before the edit on the CMD for the tentacles does that mean he is free and on top of the shield bubble and therefore Jiro can grease someone else?

Hey, GM - so I noticed that the "Black Tentacles" spell was a flat roll/success. How come you didn't make a roll for each of us? I mean, why does the tentacle only have one roll, as opposed to rolling once for each of us across the board? I'm just curious why it didn't roll multiple rolls. I have a CMD of 21 right now; and if you had rolled a 1,2,3, or 4 - I wouldn't have been grappled.

Anyway, that's was kind of confusing why that wasn't done. So I just thought I'd ask why you didn't have a listing of the hero's in a set order and then the checks right down the boards - success or failure.

The main reason I ask is because Horatio can't escape the grapple. So that means he dies, which kind of sucks, since I don't like dying in games.

While I could burn a Hero Point in advance and hope for the best, but I'm not sure it's worth it, since there is no guarantee it will matter and Hero Points are limited.

After reading the Discussion Thread, I'm not really sure about what to do.

I guess I'll toss some stuff on the discussion thread.

Meantime, here's my attempt and escaping.

Flynn when dealing with area of effect spells only 1 roll is made to speed things along. Most spells state that only one check is made unless someone enters in to the area of effect. Same applies to greater dispel magic if u notice. One roll is made and compared tot he caster level of all active effects. For example played in a game with Mage's disjunction and targeted the whole party. Those that failed their save had to roll for each item they were carrying. Took 30 minutes of real life time before everyone was ready to continue on. Not the most enjoyable 30 minutes. Hope this helps :)

If Dhaavan starts using the wand of grease on the rest of you (Variel's already been greased), then you have a better chance of escaping, and remember, even with the grease, if your escape artist skill isn't enough, you can burn a hero point for a +8 to the die roll prior to rolling

Variel, sorry for missing that. You would have been in the middle of casting when the tentacles went up. As the bubble is a perfectly smooth sphere, it is going to be extremely difficult to climb. However I will give you the opportunity to do so with a good check.

Horatio: The black tentacles specifically calls out you make one check and apply that to everyone in the area.

Thank you Variel for the clarification. I read the rules under Black Tentacles and I didn't see a point when that was clear - but what you said makes good sense :)

Assuming Dhaavan can hit me with the wand, and I make the escape artist check (or opposed CMB I guess), on the next round the sorcerer can be hitting me with another fireball and then the demons come again.

If I'm not dead then, the next round they'll get me, and we'll be no close to finishing the sorcerer.

I feel like I'm playing chess and it's game in less then 5 moves.

But I think it may not matter any more based on the comments on the discussion thread...

But we'll see...

The enemy defeated and the enemy ship is taken.

Horatio returns with his comrades and heads back to the keep.

There, he splits the loot equally with the others and they enjoy it roundly as well as the addition of a new ship.

In time, Horatio has completed the construction of his new house and in time Piper has constructed her tavern and cafe.

Soon the mates are treated to fine food and drinks; and the officers always dine for free there.

Meanwhile - the crew of The Dread Lady continues to new horizons and have many new adventures...

The battle has been raging fiercely for minutes, the sounds of battle have lessened from the base of the keep, giving you heart that the guards of the Lady of the Rock have acquitted themselves well. Your own battle has not gone as smoothly, the mysterious sorceress has hurled volleys of deadly magic at you with devastating effect. Her summoning of hideous black tentacles trapping and crushing you in their crushing grip. Just as the last casting expires, a sudden surge of magical energy brings forth more of the cursed rubbery arms. She begins to smile and gloat at the display of you all being pinned and slowly suffocated. Abruptly her eyes go wide with shock as a blade blossoms from between her breasts, the youthful face of Seijiro appearing over her shoulder wearing a smile ”The Dread Lady crew send their regards.”

The sorceress slumps to the ground without another word, the tentacles soon vanishing without a trace.

Over the course of the next few minutes you take stock of the status of Tidewater Rock and it’s inhabitants. The guards performed well although lost two of their number in the attack, several injuries were had but most were minor without needing much in the way of healing short of setting broken bones and the odd stitch here or there. Your own status is similar, there were a few injuries but nothing lasting. It seems Desna smiled upon you tonight. Looking out over the sea, you spot the invading ship drawing anchor and fleeing to the northwest, leaving their dead to rot on your shores.

After stripping the sorceress of her magical goods and gear, you are about to roll her into the ocean for the fish to feast upon before catching sight of a strange tattoo emblazoned across her back. The tattoo is obviously a map of some kind and as you look closer spy an inscription.

"From blue bight’s embrace
Spy the Grave Lady’s prize tooth
With the Dawnflower’s first kiss
Climb the Captain’s wayward orb
To claim old king’s hoard"

The map has the outlines of several unfamiliar islands with a stylized half sun to the right of them. Opposite the sun are images of a monstrous eye and the face of an aged, bearded king.

Knowledge checks below will give more information.

Knowledge Geography DC 20 (+4 to your check due to Horatio’s meticulous collection of Shackles charts):
A DC 20 Knowledge (geography) check reveals the islands to be an unnamed archipelago in the Shackles north of the Ushinawa Isles and west of Besmara’s Throne. These islands lie 110 miles northwest of Tidewater Rock as the albatross flies, but the PCs will likely have to sail a bit farther through the numerous atolls and archipelagos of the southern Shackles.

Knowledge History or local 15:
The stylized eye represents the “Beast of Mancatcher Cove” which was an alias of Captain Cyrus Wolfe.

Knowledge History or local 20:
Nearly a century ago, Free Captain Cyrus Wolfe, a black-hearted rogue with an even blacker gift for the dark arts, plied the waters off the western coast of Garund and brought fear to hundreds of ship’s captains and crews. His daring daylight raid on the fortified Thuvian port of Aspenthar directly under the nose of that city-state’s admiralty left a dozen of the principality’s warships in flames and over a hundred of its citizens carried off as captives for ransom. For that grand audacity, Wolfe was offered the Hurricane Crown by his
fellow Free Captains, but it is said that he simply laughed in their faces.

After 3 decades of terrorizing the shipping lanes, Captain Wolfe made his biggest haul ever when he surprised a convoy of Katapeshi treasure ships returning from secret mine holdings on the coast of southern Garund. It is believed that Wolfe divided up his treasure and hid it in
several different sites, but the locations of most of them have been lost to time. However, one name has stayed at the forefront of maritime legend as the location of his spoils—Mancatcher Cove.

To dispose of the most valuable portion of his plunder, Captain Wolfe selected an uncharted island somewhere in the Shackles—an island shrouded in dense jungle and surrounded by forbidding cliffs save for one cove said to be so deep that it descended all the way to the pits of
Hell. There Wolfe hid his treasure, reputedly using his sorcerous powers to reach down into the very heart of Hell to summon forth a guardian beast to crush any ships that dared anchor in the cove. Before departing, Captain Wolfe made a map of the island and the location of his treasure.

However, less than a year later he was captured by a flotilla of ships commissioned by the queen of Aspenthar and the Pactmasters of Katapesh. Even under torture, Wolfe refused to divulge the location of his ill-gotten treasure, and so he was hung from a gibbet over the harbor of Aspenthar, where his bones were picked clean by gulls and crows as a warning to others.

Since then many of Captain Wolfe’s treasure troves have been located and looted, and copies of his map of Mancatcher Cove have likewise managed to find their way into the hands of fortune seekers. However, unlike at Wolfe’s other caches that were looted, those few ships that came to Mancatcher Cove in search of the fabled treasure were never seen again—victims, it was whispered, of the Beast of Mancatcher Cove. In time, the last few copies of Wolfe’s map were lost, and the hunt for the greatest hoard of Captain Wolfe’s treasure subsided, leaving little more than an old sea dog’s legend.

No rush but I had a few spare minutes so I posted up the reintro.
