Very well, my fine dwarf. I thank you. Turning to one of the guards, he commands, Send you three archers. We will scour the region and take the beast down at first sight! That merchant will be fined for his recklessness! Doesn't he realize how many people we have here at this Tournament! He looks at the unconscious merchant and calls out. You better call for a cleric as well!

Damn fool Hippogriff! Should have made a deal with me like Oi said...

Thordak turns to the captain. Not so fast now Cap'n. The bird's not all bad. All you need is some corn an' a firm hand. Don' go shootin' it, alright? Oi'll come with you if you like an' bring it away from the city, but it looks as though it won't be comin' anywhere near here or near civilization again after gettin' all chained up an' all.

Matthias steps forward at the mention of need of a cleric. Perhaps I could offer my services in attempting to heal this man.
assuming it is ok with Captain Ulverth I will cure light wounds
Matthias approachs the injured man and places his hands over the injuries.
Cure Light Wounds: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3
Matthias is slightly abashed after such a poor showing of his skills.

Still kneeling next to the man, Mantooth tries to reassure Mattias. Do not worry, Mattias, you have helped this man better than the rest of us could. Sarenrae has allowed you to give this poor fool another chance. .

Perception Check 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 2 = 8 to see if any archers have gathered.

Mantooth then stands, leaving the unconscious man with Mattias as he approaches Thordak and the Captain. Indeed, Captain Ulverth, the dwarf may be right about being able to tame the Hippogriff. He was able to a better job keeping it under control with just the corn in his hand and the hair on his chin.

Captain Ulverth listens carefully to what Thordak says, and considers the implications. At last he comments. Master Dwarf, you are a Champion of the Tournament, so I have a lot of respect for what you are saying. However, I am responsible for the safety of the people, so I'll tell you what I am going to do. I will give you one day to go and find the beast and get rid of it any way you want. I will order my men to hold their fire. But I'll tell you, if it comes anywhere near the grounds, or if it cannot be found after one day, then the hunt is on.

Look, Oi said it probably wouldn't show up, didn't Oi? Oi Think it left for good, but Oi'll go lookin' for it anyhow if you like... Thordak says to the Captain, wondering if he didn't hear him or if he was just prejudiced against Hippogriffs.

Sense Motive: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 2 = 8

Thordak finds it hard to read the cripple's expression. Alright, but if Oi do find it, what do you want me to do with it? Shall Oi bring it away from the city and release it or did you want to see it? Oi don't aim to bring the beast back if you aim to kill it when Oi do, you know.

Thordak waits for Cap'n Lars to answer, then turns and talks with the group. Mantooth, Matthias, Cebre, Bofus, what do you all think of this? Oi reckon Oi can find that beast right quickly but Oi don' want to abandon you in the...well, you know, the...tournament.

As the Captain and his guard approaches and the discussion begins, Bofus realizes that this is probably the best opportunity to head toward the NOrth Downs . . . he slips away through the crowds heading there. Thordak doesn't particularly feel like going alone, so he turns to Cebre. Oi think Oi'll go get that bird now while the trail is fresh. Care to accompany me, lassie?

He pulls Bofus aside and whispers before he goes.
How did you make out with bettin' on the race? Oi think Oi may join you fer the next one...Here, put 50 gold on Mantooth to win for me, would you? Thordak pays Bofus and gestures to his eyes with two fingers then back to Bofus with one, the universal sign language for "I am watching you."

Mornin' sir. I'm in a bit of a rush . . . I need a simple serviceable pair of boots for a smallish-sized human. Whacha got?

Bofus isn't interested in a great deal of haggling--he just wants boots that would pass as "they maybe fit" on the old man Cabre described so he can be off and try to take advantage of the hippogriff search. He's in a hurry!! He'll pay anything reasonable (like 5 sp) for simple boots and be off.

Next stop is the North Downs. Bofus will approach with caution, to see what kind of folks might be around the deceased before he gets close enough to make any swap.

Please forgive me if I have left this too open ended. Please let me all know who is going where. I am clear that Cebrë and Thordak are going hippogriff tracking. Bofus you will not have time to go into town, find the body and return in time to meet the magistrate. Please let me know which path you choose. Mantooth you have a little time to meet with the magistrate before your event, but if you want practice and have me move you forward to the tournament, I can do that as well. Mantooth, realizing that it would be impossible to rest due to the anticipation of his event drawing near, decides to head towards the tournament grounds. Before leaving he pats Mattias on the shoulder. Good luck with Strickland. Find out what he has learned and don't get yourself locked up.

With that Mantooth heads to the grounds with the intent of practicing a little before he is to begin combat, as well as take time to pray to his deity.

I choose the Path of Pinching!! If I head to where Cabre described where the old gent died, I'll approach and see if I can get any kind of a clear shot at him before I get too closely questioned, if you follow me!

Priority 2: switch boots (don't bother with examination--trust Cabre)
Priority 3: Search the body for any other notables/valuables. I wouldn't mind keeping my Perception check I made above when I didn't know when it would be required--the result was 22--but I'll make a new one if you require. If I think I ahve time, I'll take 20 for a total of 27

After this, head straight to the tournament grounds for the melee and seek my bookie. Hope he can cover a 120 gp bet . . .

Matthias bids Mantooth good luck in the upcoming competition and realizes that he will be alone meeting the magistrate. This makes him somewhat uneasy after their last encounter... Matthias feels badly leaving the wounded merchant however and offers to attempt healing him one more time if he would be willing.
assuming he is willing I will do the following
Matthias kneels next to the man again and this time examines the wound and concentrates before placing his hands over them.
Cure Light Wounds: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 1 = 6
Satisfied that he has helped make the man more comfortable Matthias hurries towards the east gate to meet the magistrate.

@Thordak & Cebrë. You leave the grounds of the North Downs through the North Gate in the hopes of tracking the escaped hippogriff. The guards speak to you as you exit. If you are planning on coming back in, you are going to need your hand stamped. Otherwise you are going to have to repay your entrance fee of 5 copper.

Upon exiting the North Downs, you cross over several fields to a small forest located northeast of the downs. Thordak, you are able to notice the evidence of a few fallen hippogriff feathers that may have come off with close contact with a tree. This soon leads you into a clearing where you at last see the magnificent hippogriff. It appears that the dangling chain attached to its leg has caught itself on to a branch sticking out of a log. The hippogriff is angrily squawking and trying to free itself, but to no avail.

@Mantooth. You reach the site of the Arena and you notice many contestants already practicing and warming up with a variety of stretches. You come across your friend Durgin Fortkeep trying don his armor, but having difficulty.

H . . .Hi M...M...Mantooth. C....Can y...you h... h ... help m....me with my arm . . .arm. . . armor?

You see a number of other contestant who you do not recognize, but you do also see the familiar fame of Dogar, the red faced giant from the Darshak Tribe.

@Matthias. Upon casting cure light wounds, the merchant is able to stand up. “By the luck of Desna, Bless Me. My leg is completely healed. Thank you, good sir! I appreciate your kindness!” The merchant pulls 5 gp out of his pocket and hands it to you. “Am I correct to understand that I have my life to thank you for as well?”

After hastily returning to the East Gate you find the magistrate already sitting in the stone hut.

@Bofus. You arrive at the spot where Cebrë told you the old man passed away. You witness the guards loading the corpse into the back of a small horse drawn wagon. They cover the body with a canvas cloth and then two guards climb in the front bench and the horse begins pulling away.

Matthias:
Greetings, Master Teskerwill. Is it only you? I was expecting the halfling and the others as well. Well, perhaps it is better this way. The magistrate takes a long sigh and then begins to talk to you. The Trask clan has extended their reach through a local thieves guild they call the “Blackscarzi.” They are very secretive and I do not know where their lair is, but their presence has grown strong in Brindol. They have have threatened the life of my son on numerous occasions and I have fulfilled all of their demands. The latest, however was to offer several positions to guild members in the Brindol Lions. They now have three such member in the ranks of this elite member of the guards. They go by the names, Kastoon, Maliki, and Raztor. I am not clear what they are planning next, but I fear the worse. If you wish to help I need you and your friends to try and find their lair rid their presence from this city. Your help is greatly appreciated. The magistrate waits a moment to answer any questions you may have.

Well, I dare not be seen in this secret meeting. I must leave. Have a good day, Master Teskerwill. Oh, and congratulations on your win against the Kaals. That is a bright moment in my day! Fare well and good luck!”

HOT DAM ON A STICK, I believe this could not be more perfect!!

I'll get as close as I can under whatever cover is around. As soon as the guards move to get in their seats of the wagon, I'll make my move . . .

I'll hustle to the back of the wagon, and time my climbing up under the covered body with the noise the guards will make to get the horse moving.

You successfully replace the worn boots of the old man with your newly purchased boots from the cobbler. You slip out of the wagon with the appearance of ease and make your way to Vincent Lambeau, the bookie. You find him at the arena.

So you are back again for a little risk, I see. I can offer you 3 to 2 on Dogar, the Red, 2 to 1 on Longbrow, 3 to 1 on Fortkeep, 5 to 1 on Gilrain, and 10 to 1 on Reisen. How much of your money can I take and who do you want to place it on?

@Thordak & Cebrë. In his great frustration the Dwarf tries unsuccessfully to take off the locked manacles with his dagger. However, with a different approach, he is able to discover that a rock can be a powerful smashbanger. However, with one unfortunate miss hitting the Hippogriff's foot, you do provoke a few bite attacks.

Hippogriff Bite:1d20 + 6 ⇒ (8) + 6 = 14
Damage: 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 2 = 3

Hippogriff Bite:1d20 + 6 ⇒ (5) + 6 = 11

Hippogriff Bite:1d20 + 6 ⇒ (12) + 6 = 18
Damage: 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 2 = 3

However, you are able to fend off the first two viscous bite attacks, but you get nicked with the third bite 3 points of damage . However with persistence and repeated attempts you are at last able to break open the manacle and release the hippogriff from his bondage. The flying beast takes off into the air and flies due North, away from Brindol.

I, I... I’m ready. M...m....my first o...o...opponent is a m . . .m...man named Gilrain. I n....n...notice y . . .yours is Reisen.

The herald soon steps out into the center of the Arena and calls out to the crowd. “Welcome spectators from far and near. In but a moment we will begin our next event. Could we have all contestants in the Open Combat Event please report to the center with their squires.”

As the armored competitors all gather around in the arena, Chief Judge Harmon, with magistrate Strickland at his side begins to give directions.

"This event takes place unmounted, with squires allowed to assist by providing weapons and helping an armored participant to his feet if necessary. However, squires are not allowed to directly engage other contest participants in battle. Please note that the use of heal spells or heal potions are considered illegal and if I become aware of such activity, the contestant becomes disqualified. When a contestant appears to yield or is knocked out, I will come out to the site of the battle with a healer, tend to the wounded if necessary and declare a victor. Do you have any further questions for me? Then let the competition begin! The first round will face Durgin Fortkeep of Drellin's Ferry against Jacob Gilrain of Talar, Mantooth Longbrow against Vern Reisen of Nimon Gap . . .

Mantooth then heads to his appropriate place for his match. He is hardly listening to the announcer after he gathers the necessary information for him to combat lawfully. Instead, his eyes are closed in concentration, head bowed enough so that only those keen enough to be looking can see his lips move slightly in silent prayer.

If Thordak is willing to help Mantooth and he is fine where he is, then Mantooth does nothing after he is finished praying. In one mighty swing of his longsword, Mantooth Longbrow slashes Vern Reisen and the poor man-at-arms crumbles to the ground. The crowd visibly gasps at the sight of the paladin’s efficiency. Without a moment rest, Chief Judge Harmon comes out onto the field with a cleric and quickly heals the fallen soldier. The judge announces to the crowd, “Mantooth Longbrow of Dennovar advances to the next round with a remarkable display of skill!” The crowd erupts in enthusiastic applause. You watch several more battles on the field as Durgin Fortkeep and Dogar advance in their respective rounds as well.

For the second round, Mantooth Longbrow will face off with Durgin Fortkeep, Dogar of the Karshal Tribe will face Tigmar Reese of Denovar. . .

I'd like to do/say a couple of things between Mantooth's rounds. If Bofus isn't allowed near Mantooth while he rests, then just ignore what is "illegal."

First: Once Mantooth dispatches his first foe, Bofus looks around. Where's Matthias? I hope he shows up and might be willing to Bless Mantooth for his round with Big Red!

He shrugs, and if allowed, approaches the competitors.

@Mantooth: Well placed hit, friend!! You're skilled enough at attacking that I might suggest you fight defensively from time to time? You take -4 to hit to gain +2 ACYour call, of course. Now, don't go easy on your friend Durgin. I haven't talked to him much, but that whole "friendly stuttering thing" may be just him playing you! Watch it. *wink* Good luck!!

Turning back to the arena, the paladin pauses for a moment to look upwards, silently thanking Iomedae for a swift end to the battle. When he sees Durgin advance towards him he closes his eyes for a moment, knowing he must be at peace with The Herald guiding his sword in battle to come.
