I glance back at Thordak while I'm working. I give him a visual cue to stall, to give me time to work.

rules suggestion--coup de grace:
There's an option to use a coup de grace on a helpless foe. It's a full round action which draws an AoO; you do an automatic critical hit and th etarget has to save or die if it survives. That would have been the surest way to make sure that imp breathed its last.

by teh way, that's pronounced "koo de gras," not "koo de gra" as most Americans think :-)

Thordak now stands in the doorway, only letting the gnome or Bofus out if they'd like. "Looks like your career is up in smoke!" Thordak laughs, looking at the pitiful man. "Florence seems to be the only one with actual musical talent, Oi'd say!"

Dungeon Master

Mantooth, if you are using a shield in your left hand you do not get the 1.5 times your strength. If you used the weapon with both hands, then yes.

In The Hallway

Cebrë is growing paler by the minute. You have not been able to stabilize her, yet. You believe she will be dead soon if nothing is done.

Mantooth wrote:
""Know that the justice of Iomedae is dealt swiftly on those who follow the path of evil. Leave the corpse."

Lockstar holds on to the corpse keeping him locked in his own grip. "Can't you see it is dead! Why can't you just leave it alone! What the hell do you want with it?!"

The half-orc, Mashkar Rogback, steps forward and says, "Me will crush them for Lockstar!"

The bard replies, "Just leave them alone, Rogback. Wait, what the hell are you doing in my room! Whoever is in there, get out of there immediately! You have no right to intrude on my privacy!"

In Room 7

Bofus, apparently you made a mistake. There is a trap on the chest. A burst of Flame Strike explodes in a 10 foot radius around the chest.

Damage 8d6 ⇒ (2, 2, 2, 1, 5, 5, 2, 1) = 20 Reflex Save DC 17 for half damage.

At least you no longer need to disable the trap. Disable Device check to unlock it, please.

Dammit. Maybe the gig is up. But I'll go ahead and go for the disable device now . . .

Male Gnome Sorcerer/7 - (HP: 46/46 - AC19;FF16;T17 - F+5;R+6;W+7 - Init+9 - Per+11)

I turn to Lockstar: The vermin with which you made a "deal" was an Imp. One of the vilest and evilest of creatures from the lower planes. If you truly made a deal with this creature then I pray for your soul. I hope for your sake that you do lose any ill gotten musical skills as that may be a sign that you are not yet lost. However my advice to you is for you and your lapdog to turn about and find a temple of good where you can repent. With this horrid monster dead, you may still have hope. However, these good folk who assisted in defeating this creature are unlikely to provide you with better treatment than that given to your master should you remain here. Turn around and leave this Inn now, and we will allow you to live, do otherwise and we will assume the devil already took your soul and shall send you to hell to be reunited with it for all eternity.

This was said using intimidate.

Intimidate: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (8) + 10 = 18

I then turn to Mantooth: Well met Sir Longbrow, I am Tirion Jörðhár. I must complement you on your fine skills with your blade. And also well met to the rest of you who helped defeat this vile hell spawn.

DMHW:
I also want to make a perception check to determine (a) what the halfling is up to and (b) whether he is ok after the explosion.
Perception: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 1 = 7

Female Human Bard 4

Florence is so enraged that this devilish thing dealt Cebre such a fatal wound that she is not in the mood for friendly chatting
Walking over to Lockstar and his degenerated orcish bodyguard, she spits

Listen up you bastard, the devil, you made a deal with, has wounded my friend and should she die, you will met the same fate and yes, that does also mean our joined venture is not going to happen!

Then she runs over to Mantooth

Can you do anything for her? Shall I fetch a potion or something?

Dungeon Master

In the hallway

Lockstar looks at the dark skinned gnome for a moment and then replies, "You don't understand. All my life I have dreamed of becoming a master bard. I want people to respect me and shower me with fame and fortune! The problem is that I hate practice. I never wanted to work at it, and besides, it is so boring to just sit and play. I just want all of the rewards, the fame, the wealth, and the glory! This devil was able to offer me all of this all I had to do was help him acquire a few items as I went. Xaktzar never harmed anyone before. What did you do to provoke him? Now please, I beg of you. please do not harm me. I will go to a temple as you request. Although I don't know what they can do for me. I am beyond saving. I don't mean anyone any harm, but I am already finished without Xaktzar to enable me to perform like a celebrity bard! There is no way that I can go out in front of an audience now!" Turning to Florence, he says, "I am most sorry, madame, for the harm I have caused. I can't remember your name, my dear, but you will have to put on the concert at Vellorian's on your own tonight. The show must go on, but you see, I am finished!"

Tirion:
Upon hearing the explosion you wonder what is going on, but you suspect he is disarming a trap of sorts on the chest.

In room 7

While they visit in the hallway, Bofus, you are able to unlock the chest and remain unscathed.

The chest is filled with a vast amount of gold, gems, and jewelry as well as the other Eye of the Dragon."

Male Halfling Thief/8 Init: +12 HP: 51/51 AC: 28 Touch: 19; Perception 14 (18 traps; TRAPSPOTTER);

In Room 7:
Can I hear any of the conversation in the hall?

Also, in this chest, can I see the box that Lockstar had originally put in the Wyvern chest? If I can, I'll try to stow that in my backpack; if not, I'll forget about it.

I'll pull out a good sized sack, fill it with what I believe is close to 600 gold, then scoop out a couple more healthy handfuls (and maybe a nice gem or two), take the second Eye, and climb out the window, closing the chest behind me. I'll do my best to estimate scooping out at least 800 gold (I'll count it later).

Appriase: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (1) + 6 = 7

As I close the chest, I'll start to climb out the window I'm closest to. As soon as I'm outside adn making my way down, I'll sofly call out Thordak, I'm clear. YOu can let him in now.

Climb: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (1) + 8 = 9
Acrobatics for a soft fall: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (2) + 12 = 14

My goal is to quickly and quietly make it to the Wyvern entrance from the outside. I'll determine what I do when I get there (and see the situation).

Male Human Paladin 7 (HP:88/88, AC: 28, Touch: 16)

Mantooth kneels down next to Cebrë and attempts to close the open wound on her chest.

Lay on Hands 2d6 ⇒ (3, 6) = 9

@Florence "I've done the best I can. I don't have anything to cure her poison, so if you have a potion I would suggest you retrieve it quickly."

@Tirion "Thank you, sir. You seemed to be equally skilled in magic. Have you any spells that would help my friend?" Mantooth asks, still kneeling by Cebrë.

Hearing Lockstar readily agree to Tirion's suggestions, Mantooth raises an eyebrow at the "bard's" response.

Does Mantooth sense any evil from the two now?

Do I think a potion of cure poison could still save her?

Male Gnome Sorcerer/7 - (HP: 46/46 - AC19;FF16;T17 - F+5;R+6;W+7 - Init+9 - Per+11)

To Mantooth: I am sorry, my skills in the healing of the living are limited at best. Were she a statue or a building of stone, I could be of assistance.

To Thordak - quietly and jestingly: From the sounds of things, either your little friend may need some healing, or he is very skilled at falling and exploding.

To Lockstar: If the sole reason for your joining with the Imp was your laziness, then perhaps you truly are evil at heart and I should dispatch with you now. Any person - even an uneducated human as yourself - should know that a creature such as that will never benefit you. If you are not evil, you will go now and ask forgiveness in the cathedral. If it is your laziness that brought you to work with this vile thing, then your repentance should be hard manual labor. Perhaps this will teach you the value of work and dedication.
Remember, you have just mortally wounded, and possibly killed this good lady's friend. Tonight it appears she shall perform a concert. Having heard many a fine bard perform, my guess is that you will be the focus of her performance, and not in a manner which will endear you to the town folk. If you have already begun redeeming yourself, then perhaps the people of this good town will not chase you out with burning torches. The choice is yours lazy man, but remember, in but seconds we reduced your devil to a smoldering corpse - the same result could befall you as well.

DMHW:
[b]Diplomacy Check: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (12) + 7 = 19

Dungeon Master

@Bofus:

You depart with the Wyvern's lock box.

Damage for fall 2d6 ⇒ (2, 5) = 7

@Tirion

Lockstar replies to you. "I am leaving, I am leaving. Don't hurt me, I will just grab my stuff and be gone. Trust me, I will repent!" The bard and his assistant push past to enter his room.

@Florence. You believe that Cebrë is beyond the help of a potion at this point. Her death is imminent.

@ Mantooth You are still unable to detect any evil auras on either of the two.

You lay your hands on Cebrë's wounds. Although the physical injury heals, she is still deathly sick from the poison that was injected into her heart. Her face quickly turns pale white in color and her lips start turning black. Her eyes glare upward as she struggles to resist the deadly effects of the poison, but it is nearly impossible to resist this mortal wound. As you aid her, doing everything that you can to bring comfort and healing, the half elf looks up into your eyes as if she is trying to say something. Bending down to listen to her, she utters the words, "I am not . . . going . . . make it . . . my journal . . . read it . . . . thank . . you . . .every . . one . . . " As you hear her final wards, she breaths her last breath and all is quiet in the hallway.

Since I kept my mind on business and am now outside, I have no idea what's going on up there, so I'll behave accordingly.

I'll dust myself off and limp back into the Inn's common room, and head straight for the lockbox.

DMHW:
I'm confused. Did you mean that I'd found the small box that Lockstar had locked in the Wyvern's lockbox? If that's the case, then I'll try to unlock it now, after putting "my" bag of coins, and the 2nd eye, in the Wyvern box.

Disable Device: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (8) + 14 = 22
If necessary, and if I ahve time, I'll try again

Disable Device: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (6) + 14 = 20
Disable Device: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (16) + 14 = 30

Depending on what I find, I'll put the whole shebang back into the lockbox and lock it up. I reserve teh right to retcon whether I took anything out of that small box, OK?

After locking the Wyvern's lockbox back up, I'll immediately loko for Master Yab and, if no one's around, slip him his key. Hey--I found this. Everythings's where it belongs

Then I'll make my way upstairs.

Dungeon Master

Bofus:

Sorry, Bofus. I will clarify. You found the box that Lockstar placed in the Wyvern's treasure chest.

When you open Lockstar's mysterious box, it opens up into an extradimensional space. You are not clear where it opens to, but you feel a tremendous amount of heat coming out from inside the portal.

Bofus wrote:

I am watching Lockstar enter his room.

Upon hearing Bofus, I command Lockstar: Halt!! Step away from that chest. What is this I hear. Hast thou pilfered the property of others? If you have not, you have nothing to fear from the good innkeeper looking at your chest - if you do not stop immediately I shall take that as a sign that you are indeed guilty of pilfering the property of others and shall use all the powers of the earth to stop you until the arrival of appropriate authorities who are already on their way.

Looking up, Mantooth follows Matthias's perfect example of solem, albeit blank, expression and draws in a deep breath before rising and standing again in the doorway. The paladin folds his arms across his chest and stands behind Tirion.

Based upon this information Mr. Bard-wannabe, I believe you and your friend should step away from the chest and stand against the north wall. Also, lay your weapons and musical instruments on the bed. The constable will be here momentarily and justice will be done. If you are truly innocent and it was all the cretin, then the truth will prevail.

Turning to Thordak now, Mantooth asks the ranger for some of the loot from the slave camp. "Thordak, do you have any of the manacles from the camp?"

Once he has received them, he then asks the dwarf to see if he can find Yab to find the Brindol Lions.

Now you are going to meet with the Brindol Lions first." Taking another step towards them, Mantooth stands a mere few feet away from the men. "Do you know why? I will explain to you because you seem not to have grasped the severity of the situation correctly. It is because you brought a denizen of hell into Brindol. And what did your devil-spawn do? The one you were responsible for? Just a paltry few crimes: robbed everyone in the entire inn and murdered the recent champion of the tournament of Brindol."

You may do this the easy way without incurring serious and painful injuries, our you can do this the fun way and allow us to test our weapons and spells on a bard and half-orc. The choice is entirely yours, it is just that one choice may give you the chance to survive.

I continue to grin, lick my lips, and remove spell components from my pouch.

I turn to Florence and shake her hand. Well met m'lady. I am sorry that it is under such circumstances. I then wink at her so that Lockstar cannot see and say in a soft voice, but loud enough that Lockstar can hear. And it looks like this could be a lot of fun if our friend over there continues to make poor choices.

Female Human Bard 4

He does'nt deserve to call himself bard, this poorest of all scallywags, who owes his only talent to a mischievous evil creature.

Silently she will then cast Innocence and then turn to Lockstar. With grave voice and icy gaze she says

I think Master Tirion here knows things you don't want to experience Lockstar, maybe your screams will make up for Cebre's fate. I think, if you have anything left to say, or to confess or just something important to tell us, then this might be the last chance.

"Come to think of it, please feel free to search the room. You are welcome to keep anything you find. However I think Rogback and I need to leave at this time." Lockstar the Great and his assistant suddenly bolt and attempt to jump out the open window and climb down the wall."

Lockstar's escape artist check 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (13) + 4 = 17
Lockstar's climb check 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (18) + 2 = 20

Rogback's escape artist check 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (7) + 4 = 11
Rogback's climb check 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (20) + 2 = 22

Anyone in the room may make attempt to stop them by beating their Escape Artist Check with a successful grapple 1d20+CMB .

OH NO YOU DON'T!!! Guys, follow me, handsomely now!!

in a flash of inspiration, I look right at Florence.

that flute can cast haste!! DO IT NOW!! we can catch them with that speed boost!!

I bolt out of the room, rapier still in hand, and head straight to where I'd landed before.

My move is 25', 55' with Haste. I'll go as fast as my tiny legs can carry me to intercept.

As I run through the common room, I call out to whatever staff is there (preferably Yab if he's present) Go secure Room 7--the chest has all the stuff that's missing!

Finally, as I get outside, I'll start shouting GUARD!! BRINDOL LIONS!! VILLAINS ESCAPING THE STONE WYVERN!! GUAAAAAARDS!!!

Female Human Bard 4

Great idea, shorty

Florence gets the flute out as fast as she can and plays the unnerving haste melody!

Male Gnome Sorcerer/7 - (HP: 46/46 - AC19;FF16;T17 - F+5;R+6;W+7 - Init+9 - Per+11)

Damn, guess we should have just taken them out when we had the chance.

I do not think that I am very well equipped to be grappling. If anyone manages to grapple and subdue Lockstar and the orc, I will hold off on acting. If either one makes it out the window, I will cast Ray of Frost in the hope of causing them to fall and be stunned so that Bofus and the Lions can catch them.

Ranged touch attack at Lockstar (or at the half-orc if Lockstar was grappled):
Ray of Frost (but with acid): 1d20 ⇒ 18
Damage(Acid): 1d3 ⇒ 1
Not sure whether there should be a helpless -4 to their AC due to them climbing.

If there is sufficient time and both Lockstar and the half-orc made it out the window, I will case a second Ray of Frost at the half-orc:

Ray of Frost: 1d20 ⇒ 13
Damage(Acid): 1d3 ⇒ 2

Thordak follows suit with Mantooth and makes a grab at the orc.

"Oi wouldn't be checkin' out just yet!"

Grapple 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (10) + 6 = 16

Dungeon Master

Mantooth grabs ahold of Lockstar and Thordak grabs ahold of Mantooth moments before they are able to jump out the window.

Hehe. I was just opening the window to get some fresh air. There, doesn't that feel much better!"

Sense Motive: (against bluff) 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (19) - 1 = 18

DMHW:
Not sure if/what modifier you applied to the Bluff due to its far fetched/unlikely nature of the bluff.

Assuming I detect the bluff and that the previous intimidate is in effect. I say:
Lets see - Both of you decided to open an already open window and then ran to that window at the same time, while being accused of committing heinous crimes. It appears your lies are as poor as your singing.

Lets put those manacles on them and keep them here until the authorities arrive. Personally at this point I believe we have sufficient evidence to be judge jury and executioner ourselves. But as we are in a civilized community, I vote to restrain them until the Lions arrive.

Oh, and here is a little ditty to help you in the future:

There once was a bard of no skill
Whose songs sounded like swill
And for practice lacked any will
-
As time went along
A pain was his song
-
His music was bad
And his audiences sad
-
So one day while singing
A fan hit his head
So hard he thought he was dead
And left his ears ringing
-
As he left the show with a limp
Realizing he performed like a wimp
He chanced a meeting with an imp
-
He told the Imp his music had a hole
So the Devil offered a deal
Which would make his songs real
And all it would cost was his soul

Female Human Bard 4

Florence applauds to her friends and nearly gags at the flute as Tirion performs his poem

I guess that was better than anything Master Lockstar has ever been able to produce, Tirion.

Trabalard Yab races up with great relief in his eyes. "Are you serious? Do you think it is all there? Then come up with me and let's take a look."

Turning to his assistant innkeeper, he calls out, "Selena, go fetch a Brindol Lion, if you please!"

Addressing Bofus once again. "Lead the way Master Beechnut. I do hope this is true!"

Meanwhile, back in Room 7

Beads of perspiration drip down Lockstar's face as he becomes more and more uncomfortable with his surroundings. Rogback simply looks disgusted with the entire turn of events.

The bard begins to plead. "Please don't execute us! Honestly, I had no idea that things would end so tragically. I only wanted to be able to bring music to the world. Be so kind as to let us go. I promise, I will go home and practice from now on!"

In a few moments, Trabalard Yab enters the room with Bofus and his heels. He awkwardly if not nervously greets Lockstar. "Hehe. Hi Mr. Lockstar. I hope you have enjoyed your stay. I was told that I need to inspect this chest. Which one is it?"

Lockstar glares at Bofus, but does not reply.

It's this one--but hang on, I wnat to make sure it's safe. I set off the trap before, but I it might be a self-resetting trap.

I'll take 20 on a perception check, for a total of 35

if there are no traps, I'll open the chest and serruptitiously toss in the bag of coins I'd already taken from it before, attempting to throw attention away from myself at the last second with a look up at Lockstart and a Are you guys SURE he's secure??

As I toss back the lid of the chest dramatically (and toss in my bag as well) I beckon to Master Yab how does this look? Anything in here look familiar?

Dungeon Master

A sigh of relief comes over the gnome innkeeper's face as he looks into the treasure filled chest. "Ahh yes, that look like all of it. Shame on you, Mister Lockstar! Master Thordak, would you be so kind as to bring this chest down to my office! Now, could someone please explain what is going on here? Why is Ms. Hath'We resting out in the hallway? She has a room nearby that she may retire to."

someone else gets the 2000th post. :-)

I give a heavy sigh as my eyes start to tear up again. Master Yab, sit.
.
This Lockstar is no famous bard, he's a trickster, a flim-flam artist. He had consorted with an Imp, a creature of hell. This creature gave Lockstar abilities beyond what Lockstar was willing to put in the slightest amount of work to achieve on his own, and in return, it appears that he provided the Imp with opportunities to steal. I'm a little unclear on particulars--I get the impression that the imp wanted certain items, but I never got that confirmed.
.
Anyway, when I found that my stuff was missing from the lock box, my investigations made it clear to me that at least one of my missing items was in this room. I unlocked the door to investigate further and found the Imp in here, so I retreated. I knew that your empty lockbox would cause a great deal of trouble for the Wyvern, so I figured that my friends could take out the Imp while I took the goods that were stolen from this chest *back* to the Wyvern lockbox. When I ran into you earlier and you told me that I wasn't the only oen with valuables in that safe, I realized this was even more disturbing that it had already been.
.
Well, my friends bravely faced the imp while I grabbed my items out of this chest and escaped out the window, but apparently the little devil's poisoned tail got the better of our dear friend Cebre. She's not resting, sir. She's . . .

I reach for my rapier, but check myself before I do something stupid.

Someone had better restrain me from stabbing this joker in the jewels. Master Yab, Cebrë Hath'we, Champion of the Arcane Challenge, has fallen in battle against a creature from hell--a creature in the charge of HIM. THAT'S why the Brindol Lions are coming to apprehend him. It's my hope they take him to speak to Lord Jarmaath and that HE deals with this chump in a manner I wish *I* could.

Dungeon Master

I can use the experience points! Yahoo 2000 posts!

Trabalard Yab looks stunned as you tell your story. As Bofus reveals the death of the half elf, tears start coming to his eyes and he tries to speak but it is difficult to understand due to his trembling lips. "But. . . .but. . . but. . . how could he do this! She was so kind and beautiful! She was a champion! I just don't . . . understand. Why? This is so senseless!" The gnome glares at Lockstar. "To. . .to think that I welcomed you to my home! I do not wish to see this man ever again. And. . . and. . . get rid of that vile devil!"

Male Gnome Sorcerer/7 - (HP: 46/46 - AC19;FF16;T17 - F+5;R+6;W+7 - Init+9 - Per+11)

Having not really met anyone else here yet, I will stand back, but remain at the ready should Lockstar or his buddy try anything else.

Chucklingly to Florence: I apologize if that hurt your ears. Most of my audiences love my poetry - of course most of my audiences are dungeons, dungeon walls and the occasional piece of unlucky stonework. Just thought that it would give him something to start with while he is rotting in the dungeon. The rats down there would probably have loved that, although I have scared more than a few rats in my time with my fine performances.

yikes, DMHW has experience. I hear that DMs get really nasty powers when they gain levels.

Female Human Bard 4

Florence just stands and stares

You underestimated the powers of this impostor and now Cebre is dead...

As Thordak makes his way to acquiesce to Yab's request I assume, I go over to the chest and pull out the box that Lockstar had locked in the safe, and I pull it out. I hold it up toward him (but not close enough for him to make a grab for it) and put my other hand on the lid, but hold off on opening it.

What's this? Is this where that little beastie comes from??
