If Matthias moves back five feet then Mantooth moves to the right five feet, provided there is no attack of opportunity. Also, would I get an attack of opportunity for using a potion?
Take a potion out (otherwise known as "retrieve a stored item"): Does draw AoO (but not if you've got a Handy Haversack!!). Move action.
Drink a potion: Does draw AoO. Standard action.
so, you could do something like this:
One round, make an attack that hopefully takes one rat out; move 5' away from others, and draw out your potion. This will only draw an AoO if you're in a threatened area (but hopefully taking out a rat, and your 5' step, took care of that).
Next round, either make another 5' step to get out of threatened area and drink, or suck up the AoO and drink. I'd only recommmend sucking up the AoO if you're threatened by AT MOST 2 rats. You might consider holding your drink action until after Matthias goes, in the hopes that he drops one . . .
Is everyone remembering the +1 hit and damage from the Bardsong??

Hi Folks, the battle is getting complex to post. Please include your current hitpoints at the top of each of your posts. Thanks! Don't be discouraged. You are all doing well. I think. : )

@Mantooth. Throwing caution to the wind, you slice into another rat and pulverize it, sending it to its death.
@Cebrë. Your wand bursts forth three charges killing two more rats! The one that Bofus hit and another.

@Mantooth. With a mighty swing of his longsword, the Knight of Elsir Vale crushes the hideous disease filled rat before him.
@Florence. In a dazzling pirouette, the bard gracefully spins around and sends the rat flying across the room, much like a golf ball. It is dead before it hits the ground.
Your hearts are racing with the adrenaline of the battle as you look around the room to notice that the last of the rats are killed and all is quiet again.
Congratulations! You have all done remarkably well! Level up for all of you!
Bofus Beerswizzler |
*catching breath* Hold me closer, tiny dancer. After you wash off the rat blood, that is. Hey, Matthias--maybe you should drink one of those Cure potions we found.
.
Good job living, everyone! Now, to the victor . . .
I'll search this room, and Nextic carefully.
Perception: Take 20+9=29
DM Harpwizard |
Nextic carries the following combat gear and posessions: Masterwork Student Leather Armor, Masterwork Dagger, Masterwork Rapier, Gem encrusted masterwork Flute, Cloak, Masterwork Thieve's Tools, Disguise Kit. Pouch holding 600 gold pieces.
The room has a intricately carved wooden table with seven matching chairs placed around it. Several portraits adorn the walls of this circular chamber. Most of them are paintings of well dressed gentlemen. One is of Nextic himself (now imbedded with a bolt between the eyes). However, there is one portrait of a beautiful lady wearing a locket and gazing out into the distance.
Bofus Beerswizzler |
I assume that searching the portraits, and behind the portraits, were part of "searching carefully" :-)
*low whistle* He had some nice stuff!
Appraise on the flute, and the artwork--heck, AND the furniture!! (it ain't bolted down, right??):
Appriase (flute): 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (11) + 6 = 17
Appriase (furniture): 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (3) + 6 = 9
Appriase (portraits that don't have crossbow bolts embedded in them): 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (6) + 6 = 12
I stop at the picture of the lady with the locket. Figures--I made my last post from home, where I can see battlemats and external link pictures, but didn't see your reply 'til I get to work, where I can't see the picture!! Does she look familiar? Does the locket look familiar??
OK guys, let's gather up this villain's goods, and check those last two rooms. I've a feeling we might find Nextic's private chambers, which could prove interesting!!
Unless someone stops me, I'll head to the northernmost door in the corridor leading to this room, listen, and search for traps (w/the eye)
Perception (listen): 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (4) + 9 = 13
Perception (traps): 1d20 + 15 ⇒ (12) + 15 = 27
Then I'll do the same for the door across the hall to the south.
Perception (listen): 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (9) + 9 = 18
Perception (traps): 1d20 + 15 ⇒ (14) + 15 = 29
Thordak son of Throtgar |
Thordak looks at the goods around on Nextic's person and removes the leather armor. He then does his best to wrap the remaining goods, finding the flute's case if possible, into the armor and then strapping it on/stuffing it in to his backpack. The dwarf then volunteers himself to divide the gold again, this time finding the task very easy. "That's 100 gold for each of us!". Once finished, Thordak draws his axe again and follows Bofus out of the room, not rounding the corner into the hallway until he gives the signal.
DM Harpwizard |
Bofus Appraise Check
The halfling is able to determine that the flute is worth about 1,000 gold pieces.
The furniture, if sold to the right buyer, is worth about 200 g.p., and the 5 paintings are worth a total of about 75 g.p. each.
Bofus
Listening and inspecting the north and south doors reveals nothing. You do not believe them to be trapped.
Bofus Beerswizzler |
Well, the furniture and paintings could fetch us about 500 gold total, if we care to try to recover them. Maybe we could rent a wagon or something, bring 'em back to town . . . the flute is worth a pretty penny, though!
After checking the doors, I'll slink back to the group. I think there isn't anything alive behind those doors, and I can't find any traps. You guys OK with checking them out?
If there are no objections, I'll stand back and let Thordak open whichever one he wants to open first. :-)
Thordak son of Throtgar |
Thordak decides to flip one of his newly earned coins to see which door to open. Alright, heads 1 Oi open the north door, an' tails 2 Oi open the southern one."
Coin Flip 1d2 ⇒ 1
"Heads it is!" Thordak says, putting away his coin and then promptly kicking the northern door in."

DM Harpwizard |
Thordak tries to bash in the door, but is unable get it to open. However, after trying the door handle, it opens fine.
This chamber is a well stocked storage room. It is filled with an extensive list of supplies and equipment. The following items are included:
1 Hammer
4 Clay Jugs
3 Grappling Hooks
4 Lanterns, Common
1 Lantern, Bulleseye
10 Manacles

then open the other door.

Mantooth Longbrow |
Mantooth peeks into the two recently opened rooms lets out a sigh, still a little tired from the rat battle. "Matthias, you said that you'd be able to heal us a little after the battle?" The paladin asks, then turning to Bofus. "Would you really like to try to haul some of this back? There must be an easier access point to this place than that bridge if they managed to get these things here."

While I'm chatting with Mantooth and the group, I'll give the desk a very careful once-over with teh dragon's eye.
Perception: take 20 + 15 = 35
Yeah, there might be. I'd love to find it!! But I think the "big stuff" will be safe enough here for now that there's no need to try to drag anything NOW. We can always get a wagon, even hire some muscle to help.
So, should we head back to town and report to the Captain that Nextic has, as we say in the vernacular, "left the building?" And we can divide up our goodies, maybe spend some money, find good buyers for this, then decide what our next moves are? *I* certainly think we all deserve a few rounds at the Wyvern!!
DM Harpwizard |
Bofus carefully inspects the desk looking through every nook and cranny. You find a variety of papers and rosters listing prisoners sold into slavery and invoices of various transactions. However you also find a false bottom to a desk drawer that hides a scroll. Upon inspecting the scroll, it appears to contain both musical and magical notation.
Bofus Beerswizzler |
CEBRE
Cebre takes the scroll and casts Read Magic to decipher it.
Interesting . . . This looks like a complicated formula of magic, using the flute as a verbal component. To my eye, the formula will unlock a particular magically locked portal or lock, but there is no indication of what door or lock that might be.
.
I have no skill in the flute. Florence, you are musically gifted . . . does this scale look like something that is within your capacity to play?
BOFUS
Well, my guess is we've exhausted this place--or found all the secrets, at least as far as I can tell. Shall we head back to the Wyvern for a rest and see whta tomorrow holds?
Florence Danapieré |
Even though Florence was already imagining herself sitting in a hot bathtub, she gazes over to Bofus
Sorry, totally untalented with pipes and flutes. she looks disappointed and ponders about this for a moment, then she adds
Hey, but what about this megastar of music, back in Brindol?
Bofus Beerswizzler |
Knock-far?? Ppffftt he's a chump and a con-artist. I'm looking forward to seeing what he's hiding in the Wyvern safe. I'm sure we'll figure something out. We don't even know what this will unlock.
.
I say we head back to teh Wyvern, take stock of what we have, maybe shop a little, and then . . . um, rest and drink more??? :-)

I would look carefully! There was one door you were unable to open.
really?? Looking at the map, I can't see anything we missed. There was that trapped door, but it looks like it's simply a second entrance to a room we've seen.
.anyone??
