@Thordak
The slavers each carry the following items: feather token (whip), tanglefoot bags (2), masterwork studded leather, bolas (3), masterwork longsword, masterwork sap, spiked gauntlet, climber's kit, drow poison (2 doses), manacles.
Combined, they carry a total of 48 g.p., 126 s.p.
@Bofus
Don't worry, my lady, you'll be out of here before you can say "Nextic is a feeble foul flacid flatulent floutist!!"
The elegantly dressed lady behind the bars replies, "Well aren't you a witty wordsmith! Not to be rude, but perhaps you should stop prattling about peter piper and his pickled peppers and perhaps pull out the picks and pick the peculiar padlock that is pressing me in this preposterous predicament!
You are able to unlock the prison door with ease.
"Thank you, my fine fellow!"

*sigh* if only these Diakinis used smaller weapons and armor . . . alak, I can't use any of this!!

THAT I can use!!

While barely paying attention to the lock that is hardly a challenge, I continue the banter . . .
My dear, you *wound* me!! Thinkest thou I cannot do double duty and deliver disparaging diatribe to our dispicable dimwitted demon, whilst diligently demonstrating delightful derring-do to de-cage the devastating dulcet damsel??
You are able to unlock the prison door with ease.

I'm getting bored with aliteration . . . you're very welcome my lady. I am Bofus Beechnut at your service, and your more martial saviors are Florence Danapiere, Cebre Ha'Thwe, Thordak son of Throtgar, Matthias Teskerwill, and Sir Mantooth Longbrow. Are you injured, or missing any possessions? How came thou into the clutches of these villains?

Well, Thank you, Mr. Beechnut and company. I owe you all a debt of gratitude! I am Laurastar Gavlan, of Dennovar. I was traveling in a coach to see the Elsir Vale Tournament of Heroes when we were accosted by a flute playing bandit with his thugs. My guards were slain and I was captured and imprisoned here near that hellish dog. That bastard. . . I mean, that foul flutist has no idea who he was messing with. My father is the Captain of the Dennovar Blades and he will make sure that he gets his justice! I will also make sure that you all get your just rewards! Tell me all what you all wish for, and I will see that you get it, once I am free. Speak up, tell me what you wish for!"
Bofus Beerswizzler |
Really?!?! Whoa, um . . . Oh! Oh!! I know!! See these poor short stubby legs? Not strong enough by half to carry all the stuff a struggling traveller needs to survive. I've heard of those backpacks that hold way more than they appear to, but don't get any heavier. One of those . . . Handy Haversacks!! You think that's too much to ask you for, Miss Gavlan?
.
And by the way, you are looking at every last one of the Vale Tournament Champions before you! I hope that makes up a jot for the fact that you missed the exciting events. Perhaps if you wish to visit us sometime, we can regale you with the heroic tales!
.
Don't you fret about justice for that Nextic character. I"m certain we'll find justice for him. Been trafficking in halfling slaves! Can you believe the nerve? The audiacity?!?! The UNMITIGATED GALL!!! I hope he refuses to surrender, the bloody coward . . .
Mantooth Longbrow |
Reflex Save 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (16) + 3 = 19
Mantooth is just barely able to see the beast begin to release his breath and is able to raise his shield enough to stop at least half of the blast.
After wiping his sword on the latest felled creature, Mantooth sheathes his sword to avoid making the same mistake as Florence. He then proceeds to eye the two masterwork longswords that the slavers had, looking from them to his own longsword. The paladin suddenly feels as though his is less special.
Appraise 1d20 ⇒ 8
Standing next to Bofus now, Mantooth politely includes himself in the conversation "Excuse me, miss, did you say your father is a member of the Blades of Dennovar? My own father is a member of the blades in Prosser. Perhaps your father has ever met or mentioned Mortimer Longbrow?"
Is it possible/plausible to ask for a helmet? Do those exist or have any function in D&D?
DM Harpwizard |
One of those . . . Handy Haversacks!! You think that's too much to ask you for, Miss Gavlan?
"I make no promises, my gallant rescuer. However, I will see what my father can do for you. He will be well pleased to see his daughter's safe return!"
And by the way, you are looking at every last one of the Vale Tournament Champions before you! I hope that makes up a jot for the fact that you missed the exciting events. Perhaps if you wish to visit us sometime, we can regale you with the heroic tales!
"Champions of the Elsir Vale Tournament of Heroes?! Well, my oh my! I had no idea that I was surrounded by such illustrious heroes!"
"Excuse me, miss, did you say your father is a member of the Blades of Dennovar? My own father is a member of the blades in Prosser. Perhaps your father has ever met or mentioned Mortimer Longbrow?"
"The Blade of Prosser, you say? Mortimer Longbrow? You mean The Mortimer Longbrow of the Six Blades Adventuring Company? Well I am certain they know each other, for I have heard tales of the Six Blades growing up. What ever happened to your father? I heard he once battled an evil sorcerer by the name of Yato Keller?"
"Actually, I didn't win any contest, but I slew the winter wolf!...nevermind"
"A Winter Wolf at the tournament?! I had no idea that Brindol had such quirky weather! I'm sure that it would have been a nice companion for the hellhound that was kept here in this hell hole! Maybe they would have fizzled each other out!"
Umm Mantooth forgive my ignorance, but what are the Blades?
"Mortimer Longbrow was a member of the illustrious band from Prosser known as the Six Blades. However, they are not to be confused with the Dennovar Blades, which is the standing army in Dennovar, a thousand strong, ready to serve and protect the eastern borders of the Elsir Vale! My father is her captain, and as I mentioned, would be very pleased to reward you. So don't be shy, my heroes, tell me what is a fair reward for your valiant deed!"
Thordak son of Throtgar |
Thordak blushes behind his beard and mutters, finally speaking. Oh... Oi ah...Oi don't really know...Oi mean, we woulda rescued you anyhow, ye know... but...hrm.... Could Oi get back to you on that one M'am? he asks the lady.
Bofus Beerswizzler |
He then proceeds to eye the two masterwork longswords that the slavers had, looking from them to his own longsword. The paladin suddenly feels as though his is less special.
I notice Mantooth eyeing his own blade, and the others we found. I sidle up to him as Florence and Thordak are talking to the lady.
*PPsstt* Mantooth, I know what you should ask for! See if the lady's father has any connections that he might --you konw what? You'll never ask for that. I'LL do it for you!!I immediately turn from Mantooth (dodging if he tries to grab me!!)
(Escape Artist, if necessary: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (19) + 8 = 27)
MY LADY, Good Sir Longbrow here is far too humble to ask for payment. However, I think I know one thing he may like. Might your father have connections that would allow the Good Knight here to enchant his weapon to greater potency? *winks at Mantooth*
Glancing over to Florence . . . And, muscles are overrated. :-)
Florence Danapieré |
Florence looks over to Bofus, and makes a sheepish face
Nae, they're not! These guys have to fan for at least twelve hours without a pause. What I didn't tell, was who was beneath the water's surface, and what he's doing there heh!
She laughs like a beer barrel hauler so amused by her own joke.

"I think I am starting to understand the matter." She turns to Mantooth. "This longsword of yours appears to have some great sentimentality for you. Was this your fathers? May I look at it? If Mantooth is willing, she picks up the sword and inspects it carefully. "I am not a great warrior, but I have been around swords enough at my house to know that this is truly a fine blade. If you are looking for enchantments upon, I may be able to help you. I have some friends here in Brindol that I may be able to persuade to help me. Would you be willing to part with the blade for a day or two?"
Bofus Beerswizzler |
While the rest are talking to the lady, I'll do a couple things.
First, check out the cell she was in. I'd assume there's nothing of any value/note in here, but I'll give it a quick once-over anyway.
Perception: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (16) + 8 = 24
Next, after making sure everyone is at least 10' away, I'll check the door at X2-3 for traps/locks.
Perception: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (17) + 14 = 31
(If I find it trapped, I'll attempt to disable it.
Disable Device: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (9) + 12 = 21 <--I'll do more checks as needed
If I find it locked, I'll attempt to unlock it.
Disable Device: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (19) + 12 = 31
no matter what, I won't open it until we're all ready, and the Lady is in a safe place.)
Then, I'll check the door at Y8. First listening:
Perception: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (16) + 8 = 24
Then for traps/locks.
Perception: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (11) + 14 = 25
I'll wait on results thus far for further actions.
DM Harpwizard |
Bofus Beerswizzler |
I'm assuming that it's taken me enough time to do my thing that folks are winding down their talk with Miss Gavlan.
Everyone, listen up! I'm going to try unlocking this door, and it might take me a while--it's a nice lock. I have a feeling Nextic might be behind here, maybe with some surprises, so stay frosty and get ready for some action.
Disable Device: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (18) + 12 = 30 <--HAHAHA Holy Hot Dam on a stick!!!
I smile in a self-satisfied manner. DAM i'm good. Go ahead and kick down this door too, Thordak!!
I pull out my bow and get ready to shoot!!
Mantooth Longbrow |
" Would you be willing to part with the blade for a day or two?"
Mantooth looks at the woman, and then to his blade. He hesitates before giving her his own blade before looking over one of the slaver's longsword to see if it will suit him for a couple of days.
Appraise 1d20 ⇒ 6Hmm..
"Yes, this blade did once belong to the Mortimer Longbrow, my father. It is the very blade that slew the wicked Yato Kellar. If you believe that you know someone who be able to make this sword even more superior, then I will let you have it."
Sense Motive 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (18) + 6 = 24
If Mantooth believes he can trust the woman, he undoes his scabbard with the sword inside it and hands it to the woman. "I am staying at the Stone Wyvern. I ask that you please return it to me as soon as possible or tell me where I may retrieve it from you."
Bidding the young woman farewell, Mantooth readies himself for what may be beyond the door by picking up the better looking of the two slavers' longwords. [ooc]Move to X9[/ooc
Thordak son of Throtgar |
Thordak packs up the assorted goods in his bag and distributes the coins. He pulls a pair of the spiked gauntlets and flexes his fingers in them.
"feather token (whip)" <---What is this?
Each person gets 8 g.p., 21 s.p.
He then packs his crossbow onto his back and pulls out his shield, which he straps to his left arm. He draws his axe and approaches the door. He winds up and kicks it as Bofus requests.
Kick: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (11) + 5 = 16
I'm still at 4/30 HP, so if somebody wants to help me... that would be great...
Mantooth Longbrow |
Glancing over to see Matthias appearing to silently stare at the wall, Mantooth approaches Thordak and offers to heal him before the door is actually kicked in. "It appears as though the cleric is meditating."
Lay on Hands 2d6 ⇒ (6, 5) = 11
0/4 uses left for today
"That's the best I can do. It should be enough to get you through until Matthias finishes praying."

@ Florence. The music sheets are a collection of pieces with unusual titles. The Child's Luring Song, The Ballad of Listarsomak, A Gavotte to Torture the Wee Folk., An Air for Sleeping, The Dirge of Demoralization. The composer listed on each sheet appears to be a person by the name of Karastone.
DM Harpwizard |
@Florence. At a glance, they pieces of music seem very distinct and different from each other. The music appears well written from a musical standpoint, and appear to portray a mood similar to what their titles reveal, much like the effect of a spell. The Child's Luring Song appears to be a catchy tune, but with a haunting melody, Listarsomak appears to be a lengthy piece with a great deal of musical depth. Gavotte appears to have some interesting markings with some shrill tense sections. The Air for Sleeping appears rather slow and monotonous. The type of piece that would put your audiences to sleep. When you get to the Dirge, it appears to be a song that would leave the listener feeling rather hopeless.
Bofus Beerswizzler |
let's go through this office carefully--but AFTER we find Nextic. That last door there at T5had a NASTY trap, so I suggest everyone stay around the corner at or behind U7 until I'm done with it. I hope he's still in there and hasn't run up those other stairs . . .
I get ready to work on that door that almost got me.
first, I'll use the Dragon's Eye to take a close look--even though I know it's trapped, maybe I'll get some other clues.
Perception: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (5) + 14 = 19
Then, I'll work on the trap.

Let's search this room carefully--AFTER we catch the guy. I don't want him slipping away! There's one door left down here at T5 that's trapped; it almost got me. So everyone should stay behind the corner at or before U7 until I'm done.
First, I take out the Dragon's Eye to look at the door again--maybe it'll give me some more clues.
Perception: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (16) + 14 = 30
Then, get to work on that trap!
Disable Device: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (17) + 12 = 29 <---wwwhhhhooooo; I think I'll see whether this one worked!!
Matthias Teskerwill |
Matthias stands as he exits the cage that once held the feral beast. He wanted to inspect its workmanship because he could tell it was a very fine cage indeed. He approaches and offers his assistance with his wounds yet again.
Seems you should get some better armor my dwarven friend, always losing bits of yourself.
Cure light wounds: 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 2 = 8
Matthias also approached the rescued woman and says
That is a most gracious offer, I have heard of armor that is stronger than a breastplate but lighter and more mobile. I am unfortunately clumsy in this armor, just earlier today I sank into the mud as I tried to climb the wall to this castle. Is there any chance you have access to any of this mithril armor that I could call my own?
DM Harpwizard |
"I will do what I can, brave knight with the curved blades!" Laurastar Gavlan replies to Matthias. Next she addresses the entire party saying, "If you don't mind, I prefer to wait right here in the quaint little study until you are ready to leave this infernal place. Go take care of that villain and I will eagerly await your return. If I do not hear from you soon, I will try to escape on my own!"
@Bofus Working with the trapped door at T5, you are able to find a pressure plate on the handle of the door that activates the lightning arc without a proper key. You were able to disable the trap long enough to work on the lock. (DC 35 to unlock the lock at T5. Retry allowed, but failure by more than 5 indicates that you have reset the trap. Failure by more than 10 indicates that you have set off the trap again. The trap may be disabled temporarily to work on the lock with a DC 20. DC 35 check is needed to be able to disable the trap permanently.)

As I look at the complexity of the lock, I'm totally bewildered and humbled (for perhaps the first time EVER).
I can't open this lock. It's . . . too good!! But, maybe there's another way. Someone keep an eye on the door in case Nextic is in there an tries to make a break for it.
I'll go into the office and search the desk first. Carefully.
Perception: Take 20 + Dragon's Eye = 33
If that does not yield a key, I'll search the bookcase, again with a Take 20. Finally, I'll search the endtable w/music, take 20 again.
Thordak son of Throtgar |
Thordak repays the two healers with a grumbled Thanks.
He then looks around the room and checks if there is anything unusual or of interest.
Perception: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (12) + 6 = 18 (+2 on unusual stonework)
If he finds nothing, he continues down the hall, giving the trapped door a wide breadth. Move to S3
He peeks around the corner warily and peers down the hall.

Oh, you don't have to tell ME that. Only Gary Gygax created trapped doors/passageways that lead to nothing. Damned Tomb of Horrors . . .
I'm clearly frustrated at the lack of anything useful, or even of meager value, in the office.
Dammit. OK, unless NExtic has some secret passageway OUT of here, he's down below somewhere. I'll bet he has the key to that door on his filthy person. I propose we go down and relieve him of it and see what he's hiding.
.
If we can't find the key, then we'll have to do it the hard way--I'll disable the trap long enoguh to give our muscle boys here a crack at teh door.
.
Shall we go down? @ Florence I was specifically referring to "down the stairs," my dear--at least for now!!
I'll scout ahead. At the top of the stairs, I'll do a slow descent, making a trap check on every step (yes, every step). DMHW, if you'd make a Perception roll (+14) for each step for me . . .
DM Harpwizard |
@Bofus You did not find any traps.
@Everyone
You carefully descend the stairs, but everything is still very quiet in this section of the lair. There are a few spiders webs in the corners. Apparently nobody does any cleaning around here.
In front of you is a door and the hallway turns and continues to the south and then east.
Bofus Beerswizzler |

@Bofus. You are unable to detect any traps. The door has a lock, but it does not appear locked at this time. Although you are not clear what is being said, you are able to hear the voices of several different conversations happening. There is even a bit of laughter and banter happening from beyond the door.
Bofus Beerswizzler |
I put up a finger to my lips to the group, and relay what I heard. Then I'll silently indicate for them to "wait here" while I quietly check out down the corridor, and give a look/listen.

The hallway sounds very quiet. Up ahead there are two doors. One on the right and one on the left. There appears to be two shelves on either side of the door.
"Perhaps we should leave the bird here? Cebrë, what do you think?"
Cebrë replies, "This is not just any ordinary bird! This is Sirius, and he is bonded to me! Have a care, you may hurt his feelings!"
Bofus Beerswizzler |
I'll go bck to J7 to quietly discuss options.
There's talking going on behind this door--can't tell how many voices, but a few at least. Doesn't look like the room beyond has any more exits into the hall--but that's hard to tell for sure. Shall we open this door and see what we see?
.
Mantooth, can you Detect Evil through the door??
Thordak son of Throtgar |
Alright, if ye say so! He mutters, approaching the door.
Move to I/J8
He draws his axe and readies his shield. Then he winds up and kick at the door, hoping the room behind it is not full of hellhounds.
Kick: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (6) + 5 = 11
Florence Danapieré |
Florence looks a bit startled...
Yeah why not, plans and strategies are overrated, here goes nothing!
Florence draws her sword and nearly cuts Mantooth with the blade uh, sorry, buddy then she follows Thordak and begins to sing the tale of "St. Walrus and the beer barrell"; ready to enter the room right on the dwarf's heels.
Bofus Beerswizzler |
I immediately draw my rapier and try to blend into the shadows of the corridor, hoping to slip into the room to gain some advantage while all eyes are on the door-kicking bearded fury.
Stealth: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (20) + 13 = 33
