Bofus Beerswizzler |
Mirrin take the time to remove the horns and claws of the beast. By the end of his grisly work Bites is feasting on entrails and Mirrin is elbows deep in blood. "Fighting's not for entertainin. It's for killin the other bastard."
Bofus is doing sleight-of-hand with assundry gems while Mirrin is doing his trophy-thang.
Oh, certainly, Mirrin--and you should know, you're so good at it! But then, if we don't take our pleasures when we can, particuarly while doing our duties, what joy is there in life??
Tirion Jörðhár |
Tirion picks up the staff.
I like this. Can be used for a variety of fire attacking spells.
He then points to the other items.
The sword is quite powerful. Made out of adamantine and has the ability to cause electrical damage on each hit, more damage on critical hits. Not as useful though if we are fighting more electrical attuned creatures like this blue dragon.
The boots help with jumping. The belt will make a person much stronger. And, the cloak makes people more resistant to things like spells and poison.
Go ahead and read the spoiler above.
Are the charges on the staff correct? Normally staves have a max of 10 charges. I can also recharge the staff as I know Fireball. It requires a 4th level spell slot, which recharges 1 staff charge/day.
DM Harpwizard |
Please go ahead and tell me what you are doing. Are you filling sacks full of gold? Are you stowing only the useful magic items? Are you resting on a dragon's hoard? Are you climbing back down to the door at the bottom of the cliff? Are you climbing the cliff to reach the enormous statue of Tiamat that looms over this entire cliff face? I am trying to let you guys make your own decisions without me leading you in any particular direction. You know your mission. Tell me how you plan to proceed with that dangerous task? I check this post multiple times a day. If I have not answered a question you've asked within a day, please ask again. I may have overlooked a post.
Tomkin the Doughty |
Tommy begins loading his dog down with treasure. He is not inclined to leave any valuables behind.
"The belt is a stronger version of the one I wear. Quite the find."
Bofus Beerswizzler |
Bofus is also disinclined to leave such goodies out in the open. He starts stuffing his Haversac, and the group's Bag of Holding (type I) with all they can carry, starting with the most valuable stuff first. (can carry about 350 lbs worth of treasure. anyone else pitching in?)
I'd take these here boots...I can always find benefits to moving faster! If someone else wants 'em, I'll dice ya for 'em
While his magic is still active, Bofus will walk up the cliff face to check out the statue of Tiamat, see if there is anything interesting up there, while the rest of the group packs up the mad lewtz.
Bofus Beerswizzler |
Bofus looks at the heads more closely. Using his Rope of Climbing, he secures one end to his waist adn lets in an improvised harness, the other secured to the closest neck of the statue. He then walks out along the neck, and tkaes a closer look at the head.
Perception: 1d20 + 15 ⇒ (20) + 15 = 35
DM Harpwizard |
There are five necks extending out of the statue body of Tiamat. The left head is that of a white dragon. Next there is the blue head followed by red, green and then a black head on the right hand side. Bofus begins by carefully climbs out along the neck of the white dragon. Reaching the enormous head, the halfling finds himself extended way out over the cliff looking down hundreds of feet to the ledge below. The statue itself appears massive and solidly built. Bofus, you are grateful that this creature is a statue and not the real thing.
Bofus Beerswizzler |
And with that critical hit of a perception check, I'm assuming that it appears exactly as you describe it--a statue (a remarkable one, but simply a statue) with no do-dads or gizmos or anything?
Bofus Beerswizzler |
Bofus unties himself adn heads back down to his friends before the Spider Climb plays out.
The statue is exactly that--doesn't appear to be anything special or useful.
Tirion Jörðhár |
Tirion takes the staff.
This should come in handy. Not that useful against one of those red lizards, but against a cold hearted white one, I could be most beneficial.
Tirion will also toss some spare gold into his haversack.
No reason to leave this behind.
He then begins to explore the rest of the cave trying to see if there might be some hidden passage that the dragon was guarding.
Perception: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (19) + 11 = 30
Bofus Beerswizzler |
Well, why don't I scout out the door below the dragons' lair?
Bofus climbs down to the base of the cliff, and resumes his scouting of the area immediately around the door.
Stealth: 1d20 + 27 ⇒ (12) + 27 = 39
Perception: 1d20 + 15 ⇒ (3) + 15 = 18 <--+4 for traps please
DM Harpwizard |
At the base of the cliff, under the dragon's belly, a huge pair of closed stone double doors are set into the cliff. Each door is six feet wide and twelve feet tall. The motif of the five headed dragon is repeated here, although this time only the dragon's necks and heads reach out from around the door's frame.
Bofus climbs down to investigate the entrance to the fane. Lorth returns with him and stands guard as Bofus inspects the doorway.
Bofus, without touching the doors, you do not see any traps. However, those five dragon heads peering down at you do look rather ominous!
Bofus Beerswizzler |
Hrm, gimme another mintue...
Looking again, using EoD
Perception: 1d20 + 24 ⇒ (15) + 24 = 39
Bofus Beerswizzler |
Hah! I knew it!! Stand back, guys. Don't touch the doors. These heads will pack a nasty punch. Everyone get ready to go through the doors on my go-ahead.
bofus first waits for everyone to acknolwedge they're ready to enter. Once we're all set (everyone is ready, and at least 30' away), he'll take out his tools, and begin to disarm this trap.
Disable Device: 1d20 + 24 ⇒ (7) + 24 = 31
Disable Device, 2nd attempt if necessary: 1d20 + 24 ⇒ (15) + 24 = 39
DM Harpwizard |
Bofus, for your first attempt at disabling the trap, the five stone dragon heads that leer out of the door frame expel blasts of fire, cold, acid, and electricity. The blast of energy fills a 20 foot radius hemispherical burst centered on the outside surface of the door. The energy does no harm to the door or the surrounding area, but Bofus must make a Reflex Saving DC 25 throw to avoid the following:
Acid: 3d6 ⇒ (5, 3, 3) = 11
Cold: 3d6 ⇒ (1, 6, 1) = 8
Electricity: 3d6 ⇒ (3, 1, 6) = 10
Fire: 3d6 ⇒ (2, 3, 3) = 8
Acid: 3d6 ⇒ (1, 5, 4) = 10
You are convinced that it has reset itself. Do you wish to try again?
Tomkin the Doughty |
Tommy looks at the fireworks with awe. Assuming the Halfling dodges the burst...........
"Whoa, can you do that again?"
If he does not........
"Be careful there. That is one vicious trap!!"
Tirion Jörðhár |
Tirion scratches his head as Bofus explores to benefit of simultaneously being frozen and fried.
There is obviously either a second entrance, or a method to disarm this. Perhaps we should search around here before the party brewer tries to kill himself any more.
Bofus Beerswizzler |
Reflex: 1d20 + 15 ⇒ (9) + 15 = 24 <--SRLSY?!?!
Bofus makes a spectacular backflip to avoid the trap, but his foot catches on a pebble, causing the slightest of stumbles...and he's subjected to the full force of four of the blasts (luckilly the 2 Blue eyes he's holding nullifies the electricity damage).
He looks back at his wise-cracking companions with a glare and a sarcastic bow with a Ta-daaaa. He's muttering to himself, wondering whether any of those of clever tongues would like to try...
Would one of you mind healing me before I give this another go?
DMHW, I did roll a 2nd DD attempt above, and I'd lik eto keep that if I can!
Bofus Beerswizzler |
or you may think creatively!
*humph*
Looking at the heads that make up the trap...are there any holes/slots that look like they might receive something like a small gem?
Tirion Jörðhár |
Tirion looks to Bofus:
If you were to carry more of the gems, you could resist most of the effects of the heads. Then you could work that lock until you get it open.
Tirion also pulls out the ring that was found what feels like months ago, (Ring of Release Arcane Lock), and hands it to Bofus.
Bofus Beerswizzler |
Tomkin smiles and asks:
"We may have to make a list of all the things we have accumulated. I knew nothing of what that ring could do."
Look in my profile, under "group pot"
Tirion also pulls out the ring that was found what feels like months ago, (Ring of Release Arcane Lock), and hands it to Bofus.
I'm reasonably sure that was specific to a particular casting of Arcane Lock.
They do not appear to have a magic slot, but what are you thinking?
I was thinking that perhaps each head had a way to put in the corresponding gem in order to turn it off. Meh.

I agree.

Although the five dragon heads of the Tiamat statue do not appear to have empty eye sockets, you still have not tried putting any of the gems even close to the eyes. Is this something you dare try?
Bofus Beerswizzler |

You had me at "dare."
Bofus purses his lips, stands about 6" away from where he was when he got blasted with dragon breath, and waves one of the blue EoD's in front of the statue's blue dragon head.
Bofus Beerswizzler |
Uh, wow. That's interesting...maybe we should try it with all of'em!!
Bofus looks around at his friends, and holds out his hands (with a big grin on his mug), waiting for 4 more gems to be deposited therein...
DM Harpwizard |
As the gems known as the eyes of the dragon are gathered around the statue of Tiamat, they each begin to radiate a light and give off an energy. The blue one crackles with electricity as the red ones give off heat ready to burst into flame.
What do you do with this fine collection of gems? They are getting more and more difficult to hold.
