@DMHW: nice!! Have fun.

@Mantooth, Tirion: reality vs. fantasy/game mechanics. Always a fun discussion!! I agree, in reality, the likelihood of everyone ganging up on one guy is slim, and the likelihood of the second guy standing around and letting it happen is "slim to none and Slim left town."

While this is a "role playing game" and part of the fun is the suspension of disbelief and making it as real as possible, we *are* still bound by the mechanics/rules. As a part-time munchkin, I can't resist the lure of using those rules to my advantage as much as possible!! Yes, it makes logical sense to not put your back to your foe. But, in this game, there isn't any facing--you only worry about that if you're flanked.

In this particular case, Tirion definitely has a point: engaging the second guy wasn't a bad move, because it makes it less liekly he'll draw an AoO to turn tail and run. However, remember two things.

First, simply moving up to him would have done the same thing--if you could close the distance and also hit the wounded guy, that probalby would have been a preferable course of action.

Second, since we were under the effects of Haste, he could never have outrun us (even Bofus)--he'd have gotten down the hall and that's it.

Now, I certainly don't think anyone did anything "bad" (and who am I to think that if I *did* say that, anyone shoudl care??). I just htink that we'll really hit a groove if we keep the game mechanics, and some basic strategic thinking, in mind.

Example: the fight with the rats. If Mantooth and Matthias had stayed in the hall for that fight, only 2 rats could attack at a time. Moving into the room allowed both guys to get swarmed, and allowed rats to enter teh hallway and attakc the squishier guys. Sure, it seemed heroic, but that was a VERY close fight.

I just want us all to live, survive, and thrive. :-) [/soapbox]

Thus the reason I am putting forth some of the tactics ideas. Actually my first thought when I read the rat battle was that you guys would go and grab the table in the next room and partially block the hallway, that way you could have just poked at the rats and taken almost no damage.

yeah, interesting idea. I don't know if we could have pulled off getting a table into position without giving away that we were there. I suppose setting it up around the corner, then drawing them in that direction, would have worked. Hmmmm . . .

I assume we are sort of on a 2 day hiatus until DMHW finishes harping for a bunch of highlanders.

Dungeon Master

Thanks for your patience, guys! I will post as soon as I can, but I can't do it yet! All if going well., but still lots going on! Today is the New England Open Clarsach (Scottish Harp) Championship.

Welcome back, Harp Wizard. Hope everything was grand!

brought the family to Canobie Lake Park. It's definitely changed over the years . . . now it's good quality, very clean, but the food value is pretty bad--dreadfully expensive for mediocre (at best) food. So, bring a lunch, do a tailgate party, and only get snax (fried dough, caramel apples, and such). Otherwise, a good time!!

Dungeon Master

I remember you worked there long ago. It must have been strange to visit it with the family. What was different? Did the park use to be poor quality, very dirty, but good food for little money?

It's gone through various stages. There was a "dumpy" stage where clenliness was a real issue, but that has clearly been resolved. Food has always been expensive, but the quality really seemed lacking on this last visit compared to what we remember (I mean, if you're going to spend $12 on a burger and fries, you would expect teh fries to be hot and at least palletable, wouldn't you??)

It has changed quite a bit over the years, many rides and attractions added and other long-stanidng rides given various face-lifts. It's acutally a nice little park, if you can get past the food issue. :-)

It is cheap - quality wise anyway. And the burger is probably 2 lbs. Versus like 200 grams for 10 euros where you are.

2lbs????

You are an impressive thief, no doubt, but I am not going to allow it until you have some spider climb ability or something as such. However, that was an impressive idea!

Tirion, I appreciate your actions for Mantooth's round 1. However, let's give him a chance to post for round 2.

heh. It's a study in capitalism.

Normally, food *is* pretty cheap; I can get a half-way decent fast-food meal (including a drink) for under $10. But at an amusement park, they don't allow you to bring food in, and there's only one food company (at Canobie Lake Park, the food vendor the Marriott, by the way). So they can (and do) charge exorbitant prices for food--it's almost THREE BUCKS for a soda that's half ice. They make a FECKIN' KILLING on food. FOUR DOLLARS for three scoops of Italian ice (probably costs a quarter to make, including labor); I almost pooped my pants buying 2 of those for my kids!!

Because there's no competition within the confines of the park, they can charge as much as they want, until people weigh the cost against the inconvenience of leaving the park for cheaper food and returning.

And for the record, it was NOT a 2 lb burger. :-) Probably a fairly standard 4- or 5-oz thing. (sorry, we're behind the rest of the world and I'm not totally up on my metric conversions)

@ Tirion

Thanks for posting for me. I have been quite busy this week and I am only able to check the boards about once a day. I just wasn't quite sure what to post to start out with since Mantooth was so far away from the guards with only a sword to attack.

Last night we had our first campus-wide event put on by my branch of the student government. We had four different vendors bring in $3000 worth of buffalo wings to give to the students while they competed for the title of "best wings" as voted by the school. Needless to say, we had a huge turnout - we had people lining up at the door over an hour before it was set to start.

Male Gnome Sorcerer/9 - (HP: 49/49 - AC20;FF17;T18 - F+5;R+6;W+7 - Init+9 - Per+11)

Cool - no problem on the posting. If you are ever going to be away, let me or Bofus know - or Thordak as I know you two know each other well.

Hey all, anyone ever taken this quiz?

Nope - although I probably over judged some of my athletic prowess. Ask DMHW about me, he will confirm that these scores are probably not all that far off - not sure I qualify as a 19 Int though.

I think I should take it again and see if I can get like a CE ultra-buff Barbarian-Wizard, or like a super-wimp Druid or something.

So who's the new Matthias? Another college friend of the Harpwizard?

Greetings invisible doppleganger. I've never seen one before . . . then again, I still haven't.

I'd like to remind the ID that Matthias is carrying the party's Cure Light Wounds wand. (maybe Florence shoudl carry it instead??)

Divine Gamemaster of the Abyss and below...

I'll take it! Still 50 charges?

Male Human Cleric/5

Wondered how long it would take for someone to notice that it was Matthais and not Matthias. Welcome all - I have actually been posting for about a month, hopefully I can give Matthais the same flair he had before - not being a horse person, I will have to work on that one. DMHW asked me to help after Matthias had not posted for a while - decided to keep the old character rather than having him leave and introducing another into the party.

Didn't realize that he had a CLW wand - sorry.

It is possible that Matthias did not have the wand when this character sheet was created. I do not have it on the character sheet. I can hold it, which will put the wand up with the front line fighters, or Florence can add it to her character, makes no difference either way to me.

Divine Gamemaster of the Abyss and below...

rofl?!

As Shifty's daughter would say, this is just "teh lulz" :)
I was wondering all the time what you were talking about and only now I relaize we have a new Matthaias^^

Very warm welocme! You can keep the wand if you like, but since I'm mostly lurking in the back row nowadays, maybe I'm better suited carrying it around?

Male Gnome Sorcerer/9 - (HP: 49/49 - AC20;FF17;T18 - F+5;R+6;W+7 - Init+9 - Per+11)

Welcome Doppleganger - keep up the good work, although you probably need more ranks in disguise if you are letting a dwarf find you out.

If Matthais is going to remain as a mostly attacking cleric, then I say give the wand to Florence for backup healing.

I third that motion. (I've got the wand, and some other "group goodies," listed in my profile--definitely check it out and see if there's something in there that is best in the hands of Matthias)

I'll update my "group loot" list to indicate Florence has the wand--or better yet, Florence can put it in her equipment list (and keep track of charges--yes, it's currently still full, and at caster level 1) and I'll jsut remove it from mine!

I am thinking about Web as my new 2nd level spell and Message for a new cantrip - any comments or opinions is appreciated. I get Scorching Ray(acid) next level as a bonus spell so figure that a defensive spell like web will be useful - creates targets for Thordak to shoot at.

Message lets us communicate during battle sort of like a private blue tooth system

Any opinions on this would be appreciated

I think that I am going to wait for Thordak to make his own hit dice rolls.

Any suggestions for Mantooth's additional ability score point?

Mantooth's HP 1d10 ⇒ 10

Also, could someone please explain to me what this excerpt from the core rulebook means?

"When Table 3–11 indicates that the paladin gets 0 spells per day of a given spell level, she gains only the bonus spells she would be entitled to based on her Charisma score for that spell level."

Dungeon Master

"Where did you guys all learn to roll dice?! How do you get it to roll so well when you really need it to count?! Impressive!"

@Mantooth. Look at table 1-3 on page 17. Because your Charisma is 16, you get a bonus 1st level spell. Therefore as a 4th level paladin, you get 0+1 = 1 First Level Spell. Look through your list on page 231. Each morning you may select one (or keep the same one) to cast that day. As you go up in level, you will be able to add spells to the number you can cast per day.
