Dungeon Master

Well, Bofus, your weekend sounded like the pits! I hope this week picks up for you!

Well, I have trouble sitting back watching you guys interact so slowly on the messageboard. I want to move you along in the adventure, but I also don't want to make choices for you. Well, work is crazy as it is. I suppose that makes it easy to be patiently waiting and watching. However, if you guys need any more structure from me, please don't hesitate to ask.

Dungeon Master

I have an overnight field trip tomorrow. I will post in the morning, but will not be able to post again until Friday night.

Dungeon Master

I hope everyone is having a great weekend! We are off to the Tomifobia bike path to go mountain biking in Quebec today! Be back tonight!

Male Gnome Sorcerer/9 - (HP: 46/46 - AC19;FF16;T17 - F+5;R+6;W+7 - Init+9 - Per+11)

Have fun, looks like the tropical storm is staying south of Chicago today, so we are going to find a bike path and get the kids out of the house as well.

Tomifobia? Fear of drums or something???

Male Gnome Sorcerer/9 - (HP: 46/46 - AC19;FF16;T17 - F+5;R+6;W+7 - Init+9 - Per+11)

I thought it was fear of the Who's song Tommy.

Probably more likely the whole opera . . .

Dungeon Master

I do wonder what they were thinking when they named the river that! However, we still had a great time! We biked the length and back which was about 38 kms. It actually use to be an old railroad bed which was extremely flat. We actually made it home much sooner than we thought.

Well this Friday night in Manchester my bros and I are going to see the opening night of Rush's Clockwork Angels Tour! The album actually plays like a rock opera. It is a story set in a steam punk world and it is awesome! Neil Peart actually wrote a book that it is based on. My copy should be in the mail as I write!

Sounds like fun, I am going to miss this one as the guy I was going to go with will be out of town the weekend that Rush is here in Chicago.

School has started up for me again. My schedule is pretty busy. I am taking six classes and a course on racquetball. It's been a fun start, so far. RJD2 came to campus and put on a pretty excellent show.

Dungeon Master

Well my work day is coming to a close and I am getting ready for Rush! I won't be back until tomorrow some time. Bofus, our time is tight, and there are four of us in the car, so I will likely not be able to stop by. However, I will let you know if I'm back in your neighborhood.

Sounds like one little victory for DMHW type. Enjoy driving your red barchetta through the trees to hear the mystic rhythms in lakeside park. So now with a vapor trail behind you, go and find your way to where the stars look down and the crossroads are in the limelight.

Dungeon Master

I'm back! What an awesome show! They played nearly the entire new album which I expected. They also had a string ensemble accompany them! I had a gig tonight, just after I got home from the concert, but now that I'm home from the gig I can hardly stay awake.

2 people marked this as a favorite.

I thought you all might enjoy this. Seems like the ultimate playing room.

Dungeon Master

Yah! I would love to play in a setting like that! I remember playing AD&D many years ago and my little brother was going through a the Temple of Elemental Evil and I turned off all the lights in the room and we were playing by candlelight. Man, was he scared!

I think that we were able to drag them into the Inn we are hiding in. I assume they are in the water in what used to be the second floor while we are in the attic which is still above water.

Right you are - I see it now.

Ok - why the heck does Mantooth have a Heavy Crossbow and not a Composite Longbow (Str 20)? With smite evil, he would have 3 shots per round to hit the dragon from range and with his smite evil do decent damage.

Also, Bofus, do you have Butterfly Sting yet? If you do, transferring the crits to Mantooth would be nice.

Check in

How is everyone feeling about the campaign? Is this challenge too difficult for you clever heroes? I am not sure how I would feel if I was a player in this campaign. Are you feeling any sense of danger or suspense, or does it simply come across as overwhelmed? The most important is that you are having fun. I hope that is still happening! I know that some of the encounters really are challenging, but I have also seen you guys take on fiends that are easily twice your size! Let me know how I can help move things along and/or improve your enjoyment of the game.

Not in use

Fun is happening - the current interplay in the game thread is essentially a discourse of cautious heroes not wanting to TPK themselves. Black Dragon plus big ol' lake = pain.

Edvard is just a little more impetuous and foolhardy in character (given that he was ready to take on the outpost where you found him solo before you meddling kids showed up) hence the colorful Elvish statements woven into the last post.

Male Human Paladin 9 (HP:68/102, AC: 28, Touch: 16; +10 Fort, +6 Reflex, +11 Will)

Tirion - Mantooth has a heavy crossbow because he found it on the ground. His dexterity isn't awesome, so I didn't think it would be that important to switch it for a composite bow. I will look into it, though.

DMHW - I am having fun. Mantooth cannot offer right now combat-wise or tactically, but I enjoy reading the campaign as it unfolds. Given that this is still the first campaign that I am seeing through past the first dungeon of kobolds, I am a little worried about how we are going to fight in a black dragon infested lake.

Andoran

this particular predicament is extremely challenging, IMHO. If there was only one "brand" of foe--the garrison alone, or the dragon (or even dragon + rider) alone, it would be a challenge, but not as daunting. Having to deal with both simultaneously seems . . . well, it's seeming almost insurmountable to me.

Knowing that dragons are
1) extremely powerful (particularly in their element)
2) extremely intelligent
3) extremely cunning
4) extremely perceptive
makes it downright frightening to consider taking on a black in a lake, plus all its minions. I have yet to think of an idea that will let us divide and conquer, as I feel that's the key to this.

Add to that the fact that this dragon will probalby be able to escape no matter what we do (between swimming and flying), and I'm very quickly approaching officially "at a loss."

I'd been hoping that I'd be able to take out the bell queitly, allowing us to try to hit the garrison hard and fast and not alert everything. My impromptu dropping of the bell (since there appeared to be no way to silence it mechanically) seemed like a good idea at the time, but in retrospect seems to have been a blunder, only alerting htem to our presence.

Now, it seems that the only thing we can do tha tmight reasonably give us some success is waiting for the dragon/rider to go on soem form of patrol. But even that will require us to close in on the garrison with some speed.

??????

Ability to close somewhat hamstrung by the fact that we are still boat bound as well.

There's one other way to set a distraction... just needs some alchy fire.

All right, I cna't stand it anymore. I have to say something.

DMHW: the title "master" is reserved for a boy/young man who is too young to be called "mister." I could take it when everyone called Bofus "Master Beerswizzler," him being a halfling and all who doesn't mind folks underestimating him. But calling a noble Knight and paladin "Master?" that's really kind of rude!!

thank you. [/soapbox]

IN other totally unrelated news . . .

I must preach about my favorite kids' show: Adventure Time. It's a super-weird cartoon, set in the fantastical land of Ooo. The main characters are Finn the human boy (the only human in Ooo) and his friend Jake, the magical dog (he's got shapeshfiting/size changing/streatching abilities). Finn and Jake are super-good adventurers. The show has many loose references to RPGs, but today they had such deliciously hard-core D&D references that it is proof positive the show is objectively "awesome."

Finn has a sort-of girlfriend in the Fire Princess. Only problems are 1) she's a fire elemental, so he gets burned when they touch, and 2) she's evil and he's the only oen who doens't really see it. He tires to prove to Jake that she's not evil, and eventually they infiltrate the Fire Kingdom in disguse to talk to her dad, the Fire King.

Fire King: "Everyone in the Fire Kingdom is evil!!"
Finn: "What about your daughter, is she evil too?"
Fire King: "Oh yeah."
Finn: "You sure she's evil? Maybe she's like chaotic neutral!"
Fire King: "NO, she's totally evil."
Finn: "Well, do you think she could change? I mean if two good heroes tried to reform her, you think she could be good??"
FIre king: "HMmmmmm, well she'd take an experience penalty for acting out of alignment . . ."

Hey Bofus,

I am familiar with the current usage of the term Master, but I was trying to use it in this campaign as a general term for Mister as if we were before the 19th century. My characters certainly did not mean any disrespect, but I also felt like Mister was simply too modern sounding.

Wikipedia: Master wrote:
Master was used in England for men of some rank, especially "free masters" of a trade guild and by any manual worker or servant employee addressing his employer (his master), but also generally by those lower in status to gentlemen, priests, or scholars. In the Elizabethan period, it was used between equals, especially to a group ("My masters"), mainly by urban artisans and tradespeople. It was later extended to all respectable men and was the forerunner of Mister. After its replacement in common speech by Mister, Master was retained as a form of address only for boys who have not yet entered society. By the late 19th century, etiquette dictated that men be addressed as Mister, and boys as Master.

However, now as I reread that excerpt from Wikipedia, perhaps Mantooth should have a better honorific than Master. As a knight, perhaps Sir Longbrow is the best. Thanks for your thought on it.

As for the D&D references, that's really cool! I remember watching the old Dungeons and Dragons cartoon as a kid with this short dungeon master that would walk around pulling kids into trouble. I am sure this show is much better, but I always loved any connection out there to my beloved game! I always wanted it to have the respect that it deserves, but I felt that the general population considered the game to be something that only lead to eventual suicide and/or violence. Thank goodness for Lord of the Rings to finally add some validity to the genre. Maybe Harry Potter helped as well.

Hey did you guys here that Peter Jackson's The Hobbit is going to be made in three parts now?

on Mi/aster: acknowledged. I didn't realize that was your intent. :-)

I thought I heard that rumor about the Hobbit, but I thought the film was going to be released in December, so that would mean it's nearly done now, right? My 8-year-old daughter saw the preview and wants to see it just to hear the song in the beginning.

Adventure Time is a great show--but be forewarned it's VERY wierd at the same time. It took me a couple of episodes to warm up to it (come tot hink of it, so did the Simpsons!)

Dungeon Master

No problem, Bofus. If you do discover some other pet peeve, please let me know. I am very open to criticism! :-)

Well, I am really bad! I am going to go see Rush a second time. This time I am taking my son to Boston to see them on October 24th! We are going with a friend of mine and his preteen son. Even though I saw them once this tour, I am probably even more excited. In fact, I think I am more excited about it than my son is!

Just think, Thordak, it's going to be really good now!

Edvard will be flying out of Malaysia and back into Australia on 28th September and will be visiting family for a couple of weeks through to the 15th of October. While I should still be able to check in periodically it will likely cause a few interruptions and my posts may involve a little more brevity than usual.

If needed at any point feel free to keep things moving with a DMPC :)

No problem, Edvard! Jus do what you can and I'll take care of the rest!

Well, today there was an awesome moment when I played amazing grace for a crowd of a few thousand people on my electric harp! When the piece finished, a dozen pipe bands came marching in! It was an amazing experience!

Dungeon Master

Well, I have been pulling late nighters creating salary schedule for our negotiations and today besides work I had an awesome gig at a foliage festival. I have another gig tomorrow afternoon before I go teach dancing. Man, things are getting just a little too busy. Sorry if I am not posting as frequently as I like to. At least I have a three day weekend coming up!

DMHW - did my post with the casting of Ill Omen and the move in Thordak's wake just get a little lost in the jumble?

It wouldn't have affected things overmuch... but I'd like to know if I can get the spell slot back as it didn't really actually get cast?

Dungeon Master

Sorry, Edvard. I think I missed it. Please keep it in your spell slot for now.

Dungeon Master

Hi folks, I will be at a conference all day tomorrow. Posting from my end may be light.

Dungeon Master

I was so busy that I never got a chance to congratulate you guys on reaching our 7,000th post! Congratulation everyone! This is awesome. Special congratulations to Tirion for the actual 7,000th post!

I am now officially back in the room and ready to rumble again, thanks for bearing with the patchy net I had to deal with over the last couple of weeks - my parents are in dire need of a service upgrade! Apologies that it had to happen during the grand denoument of the little gobbo, but you guys handled yourselves adequately in my abscence ;)

From what I can tell I'm just down the glitterdust and we're left with a red headed stepchild to deal with.... at least afore the dragon comes back that is.

Male Gnome Sorcerer/9 - (HP: 46/46 - AC19;FF16;T17 - F+5;R+6;W+7 - Init+9 - Per+11)

If it is small sized, it would only fit Bofus and me. Usually cloaks will change to fit and small or medium person.
