Chief Meatsnacks: "Gobbo Warleaders, REPORT IN!"

Male Goblin Bard 2 | HP 14 | Fodder 13 | XP 1 | 6 coins | Arrows 4 | Darts 5 | Gambit 0 | Weakened

"Blibberblab here, Chief! I just finished a new ditty about that time you beat a giant."
I pull out my ragged songbook, open it near the middle, turn it 90° and begin.
"There once was a goblin named Meatsnacks
And he gave this giant a few good whacks.
With a great frown,
The giant fell down,
And the goblin made off with his pack!"

Doesn't scan perfectly, but what do goblins know of poetry?

A (relatively) handsome golbin sweeps in, bedecked in robes of the latest cut, hair that has seen a brush in the last week, and an aura of death and pain. He is surrounded by 2d6 + 1 ⇒ (5, 4) + 1 = 10 fawning sycophants which he pays scant attention to.
In a voice that is a mockery of courtly guises he spits out, "Retzack the Black has come unto your bidding, my lord. How may my cosmic powers serve thee?"

I assumed imperfection was left in to make it more...gobliny.

Thanks for reminding me Retzack. Everybody, roll 2d6+Cha and gain that many goblin followers. Fodder moves are listed in the campaign info tab, don't forget to use them! They're generally too cowardly and ineffectual to help you directly unless you command them to.

Hey Retzack, I think I might start writing a ballad about your bizarre experiments for a starting bond.

Chief Meatsnacks is one of the biggest goblins you've ever seen. He stands almost as tall as a man, with a belly larger than many of your heads. The Chief prides himself on his gluttony, and even now his tremendous mouth is chowing down on Leg of Elf, a rare delicacy. He waves the light-skinned leg around recklessly in one hand, his other hand clutching a tremendous club.

Outside the Chief's Manor, where he gathered you all, he is surrounded by a writhing mass of noisy goblins that crawl over one another and bite and scratch mercilessly. Occasionally the Chief will bash one of their heads, collapsing his victim's small skull in one blow. The rest of the goblins cheer and begin pulling their freshly-dead fellow apart to eat him piece by piece until not even the bones remain.

Most of the goblin tribe follows his bellowed commands to gather nearby the Chief's House. The chief glares around at his tribe fiercely, over 600 goblins strong, then smirks in satisfaction. "Now, Marvexa," he rumbles to one of his nearby shamans. The shaman nods and approaches the center of the gathering. POOOF, and the shaman summons a cloud of twilight-blue smoke that billows out of the very earth around her feet. From the smoke comes an illusion; the illusion of a drow elf.

Chief Meatsnacks points at it with his club. "OY! DESE DROW ELVES BE ENCAMPIN' TO THE NORTH! THEY LEFT THEIR CAVES FOR TO TAKE GOBBO LANDS! TAKE GOBBO STUFF!" spittle flies from his thin lips as he spits in apoplectic fury. He hurls his club at the drow elf illusion. It keeps going through the picture and crushes three smaller goblins at once when it lands on the far side of the clearing, to more cheers.

"YOUSE WARLEADERS ARE GONNA CRUSH 'EM! KILL 'EM! EAT 'EM!" Meatsnacks roars, stomping both feet in emphasis.

Meatsnacks lets an evil smile cross his lips as he surveys his warleaders. "Come back with drow blood on your teeths...OR DON'T COME BACK AT ALL!" he roars, swinging his Leg of Elf all around in wild gestures. The rest of the tribe joins him in screaming, and the din of goblin voices can be heard for miles all around. Meatsnacks' Horde is a very successful one, having routed two smaller and poorly defended human settlements recently to expand their territory. 600 is a horde of unprecedented size for gobbos...almost enough to hit critical mass, and start a Waaaagh.

"GO, WHELPS! SERVE YOUR WARLEADERS AND DIE!" Meatsnacks puts a thoughtful finger to his lips for a second. "No, wait. SERVE YOUR WARLEADERS OR DIE, THAT'S HOW IT GOES!" Your Fodder troops rally around each of you and shake their primitive weapons in the air, screaming bloody murder.

The journey to where the drow are encamped is one day away. Let's see your Perilous Journey rolls to see if you get into a random encounter along the way!

Perilous Journey:
When you travel through hostile territory, choose one member of the party to act as trailblazer, one to scout ahead, and one to be quartermaster. Each character with a job to do rolls+Wis. ✴On a 10+:

the quartermaster reduces the number of rations required by one
the trailblazer reduces the amount of time it takes to reach your destination (the GM will say by how much)
the scout will spot any trouble quick enough to let you get the drop on it
✴On a 7–9, each role performs their job as expected: the normal number of rations are consumed, the journey takes about as long as expected, no one gets the drop on you but you don’t get the drop on them either.

You can’t assign more than one job to a character. If you don’t have enough party members, or choose not to assign a job, treat that job as if it had been assigned and the responsible player had rolled a 6.

Distances in Dungeon World are measured in rations. A ration is the amount of supplies used up in a day. Journeys take more rations when they are long or when travel is slow.

A perilous journey is the whole way between two locations. You don’t roll for one day’s journey and then make camp only to roll for the next day’s journey, too. Make one roll for the entire trip.

This move only applies when you know where you’re going. Setting off to explore is not a perilous journey. It’s wandering around looking for cool things to discover. Use up rations as you camp and the GM will give you details about the world as you discover them.

As they walk, Retzack talks shop with Squick. "Oh, I now see what you were talking about. On my latest experiment the subject really didn't scream enough to reflect effective implantation. So I killed him to save time. Much more efficient."

Retzack has evolved beyond keeping track of such dross as rations and dangers. Were he to take his gaze off of Powers Cosmic, one could not contemplate such hazards as would befall them. But he does nominate Most Holy Haluk as Quartermaster, Squick as Trailblazer, and Blibberblab as scout. They are free to do or do not as they see fit, Retzack trusts to their handling of such matters.

So it looks like Haluk's iron-fisted control of the rations means we only spend three total? And pretty cool spell description Retzack.

Your travel takes about as long as the chief predicted - you see, the chief knows that gobbos like to spend a little extra time BLAZING while trailblazing, and factored those delays in to his estimate of distance.

Haluk Godtongue controls the amount the lesser goblins eat with an iron fist, yet his preaching and ministrations inspire them to march on with even greater savagery than if they had full bellies. None of you need to mark off a ration, since the journey is only one ration long and Haluk reduced the number you consume by 1.

Retzack: Choose two, or let me choose 1, whenever you cast a spell:
• Your magic's effect is temporary or superficial.
• Your spell affects either much more or much less than you wanted it to.
• Your spell has unforeseen side effects.
• You draw unwanted attention or put yourself in a spot. The GM will tell you how.
• The casting saps your energy. You take -1 ongoing to Cast a Spell until you have a few minutes to clear your head.

Blibberblab: You scout ahead of the warband, creeping through the brushes. Everything goes well until you come face to face with a hound dog, a bloodhound. Your racial instinctive hatred of dogs comes to the fore and you snarl at it, causing it to go yipping back...to its human masters.

You see a group of six or seven humans carrying weapons and pulling a wagon across the path that has some goblin slaves in a cage inside. "Hey, another goblin!" one cries, as he sees you snarling at his dog.

Since you rolled a 7 on scouting, the random encounter didn't get the drop on you, but you don't get the drop on them either - they know that there are more goblins about.

Blibberblab, you make it back to the warband safely, but you can hear humans crashing through the forest behind you, making a huge racket with their cries and the barking of their dogs. The warband, you hear them coming too. What do you do?

For the Protection spell, I imagined it having a duration of Concentration, or at least some hours, and casting it while on the journey, so for now lets go with it Saps my Energy (so I need to take a moment's pause before journying again) and I draw unwanted attention or put myself in a spot.
I...I have no idea what that would mean, so I guess I'll find out.

I'll hold off on reacting to the encounter until you get a chance to respond.

We'll say that you being the spellcaster is very obvious from the effects of your spell. When the humans arrive, they immediately notice that one of the goblins looks like a mage, and will fire a net-gun at you! Roll Defy Danger - Dexterity before the encounter even begins to avoid being pinned to the ground by a weighted net!

Retzack: You dodge the net, but your followers aren't so lucky! They get trapped under the weighted net - you can't use them for until they are freed!

Blibberblab: Your magic gives Squick's weaponry a keen edge.

The humans cheer at each other as they round the bend to see as many goblins as you are. "This'll be a great haul, boys!" one of them shouts, as he levels a shotgun at you, Blibberblab! He fires, BOOM! what do you do?

Meanwhile, three other humans draw their swords and charge, screaming! Two of them try to chop down at you, Squick, while a third begins charging Retzack!

Defy Danger +Dex: 2d6 + 1 ⇒ (2, 5) + 1 = 8
Nice hit, Haluk. No bonus to damage, I believe. Also, could Defy Danger on Str work for a knockdown?

It really depends on what's happening in the fiction! Haluk is taking an aggressive action to beat the man with his mace, so Hack and Slash would be appropriate here. If he were trying to shove the muzzle of a shotgun aside so a gunshot misses, that would be a Defy Danger Strength. Also you're correct Blibberblab, no Str bonus to damage.

Blibberblab, (god it's hard to type your name quickly without typos) you dodge behind a tree effectively but two of your cohorts are blasted! One of them has a huge semicircular hole blown in its side, and the other one is headless. Ouch! -2 Fodder.

Haluk, as you charge the man with the shotgun he tries to fire at you. You knock the muzzle of the gun away, causing it to go wide, and press closer. His eyes widen in fear and he manages to punch you in the face - take 1d4 damage, ignores armor! Besides that cheap shot though, you hammer home your mace on his arm and knock away his shotgun. One of your "acolytes" moves to pick it up! The human draws his sword with his off hand, his arm looking broken from your mace hit.

Retzack has one human charging him with a sword drawn, and Squick and two other humans are squaring off cautiously.

"These gobbos are fightin' fierce," one of them comments to the other one staring Squick down. "Knockout gas?"

"Knockout gas," the other one agrees, and makes to open his coat.

You can buff him with your Arcane Art so that he takes a +2 next time he gets Aided, so you can be sure whatever he attempts to do will likely succeed - or you can simply fill the humans with arrows, which aids him by preventing the gas from being released in the first place.

@Retzack: That's the fun thing about DMing in Dungeon World - every failure or even every partial success demands a change in the fiction somehow. It can be as simple as causing you damage, or it can take the form of an unexpected buff to the opponent! ;)

Haluk: This is a good time to remind you of the Fodder basic moves, one of which might be particularly useful to you right now...hmmm...

Fodder moves found in campaign info tab:
Follower Commands:

AID ME, WHELPS!: You may use the Aid Another move on yourself using your goblin followers, exposing them to danger. Roll +# of followers to Aid yourself; if successful, give yourself a +1 to the roll!

DEFEND ME!: You may react to an attack by commanding your followers to sacrifice themselves defending you. Gain armor equal to the number of goblins you sacrifice in this way.

KILL!: You may command your followers to attack with you, increasing your damage at the risk near-certainty of losing some of them.

Retzack's spell summons chains made of gore-covered bone from nowhere, immobilizing the cleric. "No! Foul sorcerer, you will die THIS DAY!" but his struggles do not break the chains! Your demon-summoned thing, which obeys your will but has a mind of its own, leaps upon the cleric in a sudden fury to attack it, but only succeeds in getting immobilized along with the human! (downside of the partial success: your pet is only able to attack the cleric until the chains are dismissed)

Drawback: Your chains spread far wider than you intended them to! In fact, they are in danger of engulfing Haluk Godtongue AND his opponent in their hungry grasp! Haluk must roll Defy Danger!

Blibberblab: You can also Aid yourself on the volley using your fodder! I forgot to mention to you before.

Deal your class damage, and take 1d6 damage from the human's wild flailing. One of your gobbos is thrown clear and knocked unconscious, -1 Fodder until he recovers.

Also, had a question; how do you use mental fortitude to avoid grasping chains? Are you thinking really strong thoughts at them or something? :)

Damage dealt 1d6 ⇒ 1

I figured mental fortitude for basically willing the chains not to attack me.

Given that she's tackle-bearing, let's go with Crash Through.

Tuti Takes: 1d4 + 2 - 1 ⇒ (3) + 2 - 1 = 4 4 damages!

Tutti, you can still do all your normal moves like Hack and Slash, that still applies! The Moves apply when you'd rather just spend Hold to do an action rather than roll for it.

Haluk, your blow resonates off the man's helmet like a gong. It can't have hurt him that much, but it's just enough to knock him out - he's out of the fight, and your fodder goblins immediately set to searching him for you.

Since the chains were not summoned by you or your Gods, they do not respond to your mental commands and you're immobilized! You cannot walk anywhere, you are held upright by tightly constricting chains and you only have one arm free! What do you do?

Retzack sees that his sublime magicks have superceded even his high-arcing expectations. Making a mental note that he has grown so powerful that he need not expend all his energies on a single target for fear of defouling the entire battlefield, he wills away the chains, and simply unleashes the Terror Demon upon the man.

Chains wrapping, grinding, choking, tearing: 2d6 + 2 ⇒ (5, 5) + 2 = 12

A sound like tearing fabric fills the air followed by a smell like copper: 1d8 ⇒ 6

The gore-covered immobilizing chains are the ones willed away. The chains on the Terror Demon work just fine. Retzack makes a mental note to look in a thesaurus to find a weapon of terror that is not, in fact, a chain.
