"We could do both the same night, but only if you want to try to fight a shadow beast without either Ferrurio or myself. I know you did it last time, but you also lost two members of your group..."
DM Flykiller |
You know that some of the shadow creatures are restless souls of evildoers, or even animal spirits such as rats and wolves. Though incorporeal, these creatures' attacks can be very dangerous as they sap the very essence of the living creatures, rendering them helpless. Creatures whose life is fully drained by a shadow may rise as undead spawn themselves.
You know that even though the Plane of Shadow is a transitive plane, there are still creatures native to it. Some of those creatures are mindless hunters, like Shadowgarms, but others are sapient, and perhaps even superior to humans, such as elusive and enigmatic Shae. There is even a kind of demons who had strayed so far from their native Lower planes, that they became bound to the Plane of Shadow forever.
Dracius Ludio |
"As I said, maybe we can do both by finding a beast in its lair during the day, before undertaking our night mission? I believe these beasts may spawn new ones when they kill -- so perhaps we can find such a thing and take it."
Dario Westone |
"Like the sewers? It's possible. We probably shouldn't just be walking around town though. We did just assault and kill a Hellknight, remember?"
Dario Westone |
"You're probably right. So let's work on these disguises and then we can see what sort of shadow beasts we can stir up tomorrow. Then in the evening, Ferrucio can lay in wait while one of us makes the drop for Bluehood."
Ferrucio de Angelis |
"You're probably right. So let's work on these disguises and then we can see what sort of shadow beasts we can stir up tomorrow. Then in the evening, Ferrucio can lay in wait while one of us makes the drop for Bluehood."
"That sounds like an excellent plan," Ferrucio says. "First, I shall need some supplies--Janiven, do you suppose you could send Yakopulio out to get some things for me? I suspect she will know where to look."
Also, can I take 20 on a Disguise check? I'm willing to spend the time; by my estimation we are doing nothing for the whole day tomorrow. I will use disguise self on my own disguise. The general idea would be that I will make the Disguise check, review the results, and if any are particularly poor, start over and take 20.
So my plan would be: (1) make disguise checks for the other 4 PCs tonight (taking up to two hours, 1d3 × 10 mins each); (2) review the results (effectively making my own Perception check against the Disguise results); (3) start over in the morning with any that were particularly badly done, and take 20 if I can and I have the time available, or taking 10 if I don't. While I'm playing at seamstress, any of the PCs who already have decent disguises can head out and do something useful.
DM Flykiller |
Ferrucio - what you propose is fine.
Arael looks at Illithia with sadness and recaps the story so far.
"Shanwen had a letter on him, which indicated that Westcrown authorities are having trouble with some gang called Bastards of Erebus. They asked the Hellknights to deal with it, but did not receive any aid yet. We need to get their contacts and strike at them first, to prove that the Hellknights are more trouble than they're worth. One lead I have which could fetch us some information about them is someone called Bluehood. She collects the remains of the shadow beasts for some unknown purpose. The current plan is to lure her out with the promise of trophies, and then learn as much information as we can out of her. The complication is that after today's heist and the death of a full Hellknight, the Order will be out to get you, so it's not wise to appear in the city without a disguise. In the end, we have the following plan:
1. Ferrucio makes disguises for you tonight and tomorrow.
2. Tomorrow at twilight, Dracius leads you to a place which he suspects may be ripe with the shadow beasts.
3. You leave part of your trophies for Bluehood, with a note that more will await if she talks to you.
4. You attempt to track her down and receive info about the Bastards of Erebus."
Please share with me if you have something specific in mind. So far I assume you'll lead the party to the ruined part of the city.
Ferrucio de Angelis |
Great! Thanks. : )
Having dispatched Yakopulio to pick up a few items, Ferrucio sets to work. He finds an empty room and sets up a table in one corner with a chalkboard, while a tailor's dummy sits in another. To begin with, he asks everyone to come in one by one to have their measurements taken.
Yes, he is taking inside leg measurements...
As he makes each measurement, Ferrucio jots down a few numbers on his chalkboard, keeping everything organised as he waits for Yakopulio to return.
Eventually, it is Illithia's turn.
Hello, Ferrucio says as she comes in. She looks tired--but still more graceful and poised than he feels, hobbling around with his stiff muscles. Ferrucio ventures a smile--but he has a feeling the rather unfamiliar expression came out as more of a grimace.
He looks Illithia up and down, trying to get a feel for her form, the same way he did with the men--although he notices a few different things on a woman--the fall of her hair, the angle between her neck and her shoulder, the way her belly--
Shaking himself out of that line of thought, Ferrucio begins taking the measurements, his directions simple and as emotionless as he can manage. When it comes time to take Illithia's bust measurement, Ferrucio can't help but try to make conversation to distract himself, to keep his mind from wandering. I'm only human, Ferrucio reflects, and she really is very pretty.
Arms up, please, he directs, as he passes the tape around in front of her. As he leans in close, he smells her perfume. Bluebells? Stop it! So, how are you feeling? Arms down again, thank you.
Disguise Checks
Illithia: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (15) + 7 = 22, taking 1d3 ⇒ 1 × 10 = 10 minutes
Dracius: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (18) + 7 = 25, taking 1d3 ⇒ 2 × 10 = 20 minutes
Bishop: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (11) + 7 = 18, taking 1d3 ⇒ 1 × 10 = 10 minutes
Dario: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (14) + 7 = 21, taking 1d3 ⇒ 1 × 10 = 10 minutes
Ferrucio (using disguise self as well): 1d20 + 7 + 10 ⇒ (13) + 7 + 10 = 30
Dario Westone |
Dario looks at himself in the mirror. The man who looked back at him was easily 15 years older with high cheekbones. The clothes made him appear like a servant, which would easily allow him to move about the city. In fact, his face reminded himself of Dr. MacDonald in the antiquities department. The man was always prattling on about the University's catalog system. Something about tapestries the last time I saw him.
"Good work, Ferrucio. I doubt anyone will pay much attention to us like this."
Bishop Jerro |
Bishop tries to not fidget uncomfortably while he is being made over by Ferrucio. He coughs a little when the wizard starts to put powdered make-up on him to cover up the stubble, but is otherwise patient. When it is all said and done, he is amazed at how different he looks. He looks like a fresh faced Chelish youth, one that could easily get lost in a crowd on the street. His duster having been replaced by a semi-nice brightly colored tunic with breeches to match."I don't even recognize myself now." He blinks while looking at himself.
Illithia Daramui |
Eventually, it is Illithia's turn.Hello, Ferrucio says as she comes in. She looks tired--but still more graceful and poised than he feels, hobbling around with his stiff muscles. Ferrucio ventures a smile--but he has a feeling the rather unfamiliar expression came out as more of a grimace.

Sense Motive: 1d20 ⇒ 3
Illithia doesn't notice the way Ferrucio seems a bit distracted as he's taking the measurements, herself still seeming distant, though she returns Ferrucio's smile. She follows Ferrucio's directions almost mechanically, up until she inquires after her. "I... I don't know. Part of my oaths were to only take a life as a last resort... I've never killed before. It's not an experience I care to repeat very soon." If Ferrucio looks up at her face, he can see she's on the edge of tears, but stoically refusing to do something so embarrassing.
Ferrucio de Angelis |
Ferrucio busies himself with his chalkboard, fussing over measurements while Illithia speaks.
"Well," he says without looking up, "whilst I don't doubt we will run into that quandary again--probably soon--we will do what we can to minimise any loss of--" He looks up momentarily to see tears gathering in the corner of Illithia's eyes as she blinks them furiously away. Ferrucio's expression softens and he puts down his chalkboard.
"Hey, come on," he says gently. He reaches into a pocket and pulls out the kerchief he used earlier. "This still smells of smoke a little, but if you want to use it, it's yours," he says, handing it over.
Ferrucio's mind races, his hard analytical mind at war with the part of him he's kept buried for years--the part that cares about other people. Eventually, he decides to try a compromise. "Illithia, I understand that one of the core concepts of Shelyn's teachings is that no beauty can come from evil. Right? If that's the case, then while I can appreciate that Shanwen's death--any death--is a hard burden to bear, it was a choice made of necessity."
Ferrucio sifts through his memories, looking for something else that might help him. In the end, he simply goes with the supposition he made when the Children were planning their attack to free Arael.
"Illithia, I know little of Shelyn's mysteries; I confess I have studied...other paths. But judging by your behaviour and the obvious difficulties you had with the idea of hurting the armigers, I'd hazard a guess that your oaths go beyond taking a life as a last resort--or if not your oaths specifically, then at least your beliefs."
"But it also stands to reason that the continued existence of men like Shanwen reduces the beauty in the world--and I have no doubt that, had Shanwen lived, the chance for beauty in the future would have been reduced too, by his actions."
"So yes, mourn Shanwen's death--but realise as well that your actions have made a positive impact on not only Arael's life, and not only the lives of those that Arael's freedom will affect, but also on the countless innocents that I have no doubt Shanwen would have tortured and abused just because he was in a position of power over them."
"I believe that your ledger is in credit with your goddess on this matter. Your interpretation is up to you, but I would urge you to think on what I have said."
He gives her an awkward pat on the shoulder, which turns into a supportive squeeze.
"Now, I have everything I need for the moment, so you can leave if you wish. But if you would prefer to stay here and compose yourself, I have no objections."
###
In case any Sense Motive rolls are required, Ferrucio is being genuine in everything he says. He does want to help Illithia, but the best way he can think of to do it is to appeal to her sense of logic...which may or may not actually work.
Illithia Daramui |
Illithia gratefully takes the proffered kerchief, dabbing at her eyes with it. "Thank you." she says quietly.
As she listens to Ferrucio say his peace, Illithia slowly calms down. Her hand is still shaking a little, but the tears are gone. "I... you may be right. Perhaps Shanwen was only a force for evil in the world. However, life isn't always so simple, I wish it were. Perhaps Shanwen had a wife, or children, which are now fatherless. Or companions who truly valued him. These things are not evil, far from it. But perhaps you are right. Perhaps the evil he brought into the world outweighed the beauty... I... will think on what you said. I am fine now, thank you. Do you want your kerchief back? I can wash it first, if you want."
Ferrucio de Angelis |
Ferrucio takes the kerchief back with a flourish, followed by his best courtly bow--which is quite good.
"Madam, I would sooner see my spellbook go up in flames than subject you to such things as washing my kerchief," he says with mock gravitas. "The world will be much better served by your efforts in other areas."
"I shall have a disguise ready for you by the morning. And if you ever feel the need to talk...well...it's not like I have many places to go."
This time, his smile reaches his eyes as well.
Dracius Ludio |
In his disguise, Dracius heads back into town, making his way toward Rego Cader and the Dusk Market, looking for familiar faces of people he knew years ago. He pauses for a moment and takes a deep breath, surprised at the near-nostalgia that the mix of smells, foul and fair trigger within him. I suppose, on some level, I will always be a child of the streets...
He smiles as something catches his eye, a familiar game in which he once played, where one child cries about being lost while one of his friends picks the pocket of the distracted mark. He chuckles slightly as the kid looks directly at his teammate, Oooh, quite the tell. You're not anywhere near as good at that as I was... He watches for a while, somehow not surprised to see that the same patterns are being followed by new urchin. Valgra never was terribly imaginative, he chuckles as he heads over to a stall selling meat skewers that look almost nothing like the sewer rat and sewer lizard they actually are.
"Hello, Valgra. I'm looking for a bit of information that your kids may have tripped over in the last few days...."
Diplomacy (Gather Information): 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (20) + 1 = 21
Perform (Act): 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (19) + 4 = 23 (Not give myself away, disguise and all)
Dracius will start with an initial "meeting fee" of 10gp, and is willing to spend up to 50gp for good information -- plus, he'll hand out about 30 silvers worth of smaller coin and/or food/ale to help getting people talking...
DM Flykiller |
Impressive rolls - 10gp fee is enough
Valgra is very impressed by the easy-going manner of the stranger which, he is certain, conceals the air of an important person incognito. 10gp buys you a complementary extra crunchy sewer lizard-on-a-stick, together with a slew of information about the sightings of the shadow beasts in Walcourt and people disappearances in the last week. Apparently, not all of the missing people are attributed to the shadow creatures, as there is also a gang of goblins on the rise in the ruined part of The Ramble Gardens, which makes even the rundottari circle that area.
Ferrucio de Angelis |
Ferrucio, wearing his disguise as a footman (but not having cast disguise self; therefore Perception DC to see through the disguise is 20), circulates the town, listening in to conversations in bars and generally trying to make himself look inconspicuous. He will ask questions about the heists seemingly perpetrated by the Bastards of Erebus, seeing if someone can point him to the people who were actually affected (or better, their servants), to talk to them.
Diplomacy (gather information) check: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (14) + 7 = 21

Oh, and the goblins are led by someone named Whitechin, who seems to command their utmost fear and respect, and instills the discipline and daring previously unheard of into the goblins. Rumor has it, the mayor has declared a bounty on Whitechin's head, but no one has been able to collect it yet. If the rumor is true, then collecting this bounty would present an opportunity to make contacts with the mayor and start establishing a good name for the Children of Westcrown.
You are able to find a beggar who claims he was recently a butler for a wealthy merchant, but got fired and nearly escaped arrest after the merchant was robbed by the Bastards of Erebus, on suspicion of his involvement. He claims his innocence, but shares with you what he has heard about the Bastards during his exile. The beggar explains that in the past few weeks, a group of thieves calling themselves the Bastards of Erebus have committed a spree of robberies near the old city, with at least one incident resulting in a double murder.
The Bastards are reputed to be a gang of tieflings living in the ruined part of the city; their name implies a connection to Hell, though he doesn’t know if the bandits are using it just to evoke fear, if their tiefling heritage actually stems from a fiend of Erebus, or if they have some greater connection. Regardless, they always leave behind a wooden token showing a devil’s head in profile, and have become more
brazen about their nighttime crimes.
For whatever reason (some suspect corruption and others suspect incompetence), the city guards have as of yet done little about the Bastards — which is probably why the mayor turned to the Hellknights for help. The people of the city are growing worried; it’s bad enough that they can’t go out at night except for a few key streets, but at least they were safe in their homes during the dark hours. Now even that safety seems to be vanishing.
You learn that the bandits always attack at night. They never attack two nights in a row, and most attacks are anywhere from 3 to 7 days apart. Eight attacks have taken place in the past 3 weeks — mostly places with small, portable valuables such as a gemcutter, but one was a moneylender and another a crafter of fine weapons. It was the weaponsmith who was killed, presumably because he heard noises downstairs and went to investigate; the tieflings killed him, then
went upstairs and killed his wife, probably so there would be no witnesses.
They always leave a wooden token or coin with their mark in the shop they’ve robbed and on the bodies of those they’ve killed, and twice they’ve scrawled their name on the building’s front door with
a sharp object. Obviously they’re sneaky (and the way he says this indicates he feels this way about most tieflings) and skilled at picking locks, for none of the robberies resulted in broken doors or windows, and they even relock the door after leaving.
Given the small size of the shops, the number of tieflings involved in a single break-in is probably very few — more than about four and they wouldn’t have much room to move around inside the place they were robbing. However, he suspects it’s more than just a group of four tieflings involved, though he has no evidence for this—“they just tend to gather in large groups for protection when not working for normal people” (again, showing a bit of his prejudice against tieflings).

Heh! At the very least, all that gold you won should give you some leverage for any future gather information check. ; )

What's with all the rolls today?!
Either there is something distracting in Ferrucio's disguise, or today is Bishop's lucky day, but the silver and gold coins are filling his pocket with alarming speed. You win 15gp
At some point, Bishop is approached by a strikingly beautiful woman in black leather vest and red boots on high heels. She smiles dangerously and licks her lips, and you notice that her canines are slightly longer than normal. She looks at you with the eyes which are of golden colour.
"Hello there, handsome. You must be new in town. I think you've had plenty of opportunity to learn that the men of this city wouldn't be able to tell two-of-a-kind apart from a royal flush. The boredom in this hell-hole of a town is a killer. Now, would you be up for a real challenge?"
another Gambler roll and a 5d6 if you're game.

"Humph. I thought you were really a skilled player, but it looks like you're just lucky with the dice.
She leans closer to you and whispers into your ear. "I need a rematch, but not right now. You can come to the old temple of Erastil in the northern area, and I'll collect my due."
She laughs and leaves in haste, leaving behind a faint smell of sulphur. When you shout "Hey! What about my wager?", she tosses you a single coin. As you catch it, you see that it's not a gold piece, but the same wooden coin with the devil's profile as the one you found in the sewers. When you make it through the crowds and run outside, there is no trace of her.
Dario Westone |
While Bishop and Ferrucio hit the taverns and bars of the city looking for information, Dario decides to press his luck a bit and really take the disguise for a whirl. He decides to visit some of Westcrown's brothels to see if anyone has been boasting of their deeds as a Bastard of Erebus in the midst of pillow talk.
He decides to take it slow, not only enjoying the sights of his environment, but stretching his coin over hours. He'll pose as someone interested in joining the Bastards, eager to find tales of their daring and hoping to locate a contact for the group. If any of the ladies figure out the disguise (which they may given they'll probably have physical contact with him), he'll play it off as a bit of mystery, something that's needed given his station in life, implying he may be a member of a noble family.
Diplomacy (Gather Information) 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (10) + 6 = 16
Willing to spread around 30 gold to various girls and establishments for information.
DM Flykiller |
At least one sensible roll :)
While Dario has had a lovely time with the ladies, who were giggling over his extravagant make-up and overall having fun, he did not have much luck finding out about the Bastards. Most of the girls made a face and assured him they never do any dealings with tieflings.
He did, however, learn, that another infamous client of the local brothels is none other than the Mayor Arvanxi, who is well-known in certain circles for his decadent lifestyle. None of the girls have witnessed it, but rumors are abound that sometimes he goes too far in mixing the pleasure and the pain, and not every girl who is sent to him returns back fit for work, if at all.
Illithia Daramui |
While the other group members visit the less-savoury parts of town, Illithia uses her disguise to seek out information from the various pious sources that she was acquainted with in the city. Her disguise concealed her hair as that was probably her main identifier, but also gave her curves less distiction. She's looking for clergy who might have helped people who have come to them after encounters with either the shadow creatures or the bastards.
Diplomacy (Gather Information): 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (15) + 7 = 22
DM Flykiller |
The Bastards are reputed to be a gang of tieflings living in the ruined part of the city; their name implies a connection to Hell, though you are unable to learn if the bandits are using it just to evoke fear, if their tiefling heritage actually stems from a fiend of Erebus, or if they have some greater connection.
The Asmodean clergy is generally in agreement that nothing better could come out of big gathering of tieflings anyway. They see the existence of the tiefling ghettos in Westcrown as a natural source for organized crime. You learn that some activity is recently brewing near the abandoned temple of Erastil in the Rego Cader.
As for the shadow beasts, they are most frequent and restless in Walcourt of Rego Crua. Once a center of worship for followers of Founder Crucisal, the assembly lodge fell into disuse and disrepair shortly after the death of Aroden. Since then it has been deemed a haunted place, rife with stories of shadowy figures and ghostly apparitions. Attempts to set flophouses and orphanages on the grounds have ended abruptly through the years, adding to tales of unquiet, lingering residents.
In the evening, you all meet back in the safe house and share the stories of your investigations (perhaps omitting some intimate details, in Dario's case).
Bishop Jerro |
Bishop will relate what little he found to the group. However later on he approaches Illithia in private if possible. "Hey there. I was wonderin' if you could do me a favor. I wanna go hit the church of Erastil tommorow to go visit that woman who gave me the coin. But personally I think its a trap. And seeing as how I don't wanna have to hit a woman, I was thinkin' you could come with me. As back up." He smiles a bit hoping she would agree."I'll buy you a drink afterwards. What do ya say?"
Dario Westone |
Dario returns late into the night. His disguise has certainly seen some action. It's practically ready to fall apart, only serving to obscure his real features rather than convince anyone the disguise is real.
"Well, I learned absolutely nothing." The Professor drops into a chair and leans back in his customary manner. He grins. "But I had a hell of a good time doing it! Some of those brothels are very inviting."
Illithia Daramui |
Illithia breathed a sigh of relief that none of the clergy Asmodean clergy recognized her. Ferrucio was an excellent disguiser it seemed, and her respect for the man was definitely building despite what Dracius had warned her of. She shares what she learned with the group, giving Dario a wry smile when he flops down. "If these Bastards of Erebus haven't visited the brothels yet, perhaps they aren't doing as well as folks make them out to."
Later, with Bishop.
"Everything I learned about the Bastards points to that same temple. Old Deadeye would shudder if he learned one of his temples was being used as a staging point for such banditry. However, I think your assesment is right. If you weren't being careful with your questions, she might think to dispatch you. Why don't we bring this to the other members?"
Bishop Jerro |
"I, uh didn't get to ask that many questions actually. We just played a few hands. In fact to be honest, I didn't even think anything of it until she tossed me this coin. Feel kinda foolish not figuring out that she might be one of em and that she was scoutin' me. We can bring this to the group I suppose. Though either way, this should be a 2 man.. I mean person job. No need to make em suspicious or anything. If we do decided to tell the group, I think you should talking. Would sound prettier comin' from you than me."
Illithia Daramui |
"I mean to say, if it is indeed a trap, it would prudent to have our whole fighting force nearby. Though I'd like to avoid violence if possible. If she is a member of the Bastards, maybe we could convince them to leave the citizenry alone."
Ferrucio de Angelis |
Ferrucio spends some time touching up his makeup before their evening sortie.
"Well, I found a former butler of one of the robbery victims, who gave me some useful information; apparently the Bastards have been committing robberies for the last few weeks, always leaving a token behind at the scene of their crimes. Bishop, can I see the token that woman gave you?"
Knowledge (planes) to recognise the image on the coin as Mammon: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (10) + 12 = 22
"In any case," Ferrucio continues, "it sounds like this old church of Erastil should be our next target. We have two options: observe it tonight after our engagement with Bluehood, or wait until tomorrow during the daylight. Either has its pros and cons."
Bishop Jerro |
"Sorry. I can tell killin' Shanwen has gotten to ya. It's never easy takin' someone's life. But you know just as well as I do, sometimes you do what you got to."
Bishop hands the coin over to Ferrucio so he can inspect it. "Odd thing was, she just gave it to me. As far as I can tell I only made some coin, didn't lose none. Think she knows who I am, even with the disguise. Speakin' of the church, I think Illithia has an idea about that." He nods towards the woman so she can pitch the idea.
Illithia Daramui |
Illithia returns Bishop's nod, "Bishop was told by the woman - whoever she is - to meet her at the old temple at noon tomorrow. I figure Bishop should go, but we all should join him, just in case an ambush awaits. I also would like to speak with this woman. Though there isn't much hope, I may be able to convince the Bastards to, at very least, pick military targets. The people of the city don't deserve this."
Dario Westone |
"The Church of Erastil? That's pretty serious if they've made that their headquarters. You sure you want to just walk in there? There probably won't be much cover for us to be close."
