Rani has stayed remarkably quiet, still not feeling quite at home among these new Pathfinders, all of them unfamiliar to him. They should keep groups together. Why couldn't I continue with the nice people I completed my confirmation with? It seems my talents are a bit of a waste here, he thinks to himself.

He then tries to think about what kind of creatures they might face in the wild here. He doesn't know much about Brevoy, mind you. Knowledge (local) + inspiration: 1d20 + 8 + 1d6 ⇒ (7) + 8 + (1) = 16


Rani:
You've heard from the locals that the wilds are full of dangerous creatures, not including ferocious wolves and monstrous vermin. It's dangerous to go alone!

Following the road the party was told about, they head southwest for an entire day with no sign of Lander or any other travelers. Mid through the second day, something colorful is spotted tied off on a tree near a well worn game trail. An investigation reveals it to be a handkerchief to decorated with the crest of House Lebeda — a white swan on a blue background with a rising sun in the background.

Rani lets the others know about what he heard in town about the surrounding countryside.

Arnthoth glances at the handkerchief, shrugs, then wipes his nose.

Great find! Arnthoth exclaims as the handkerchief is handed to hom. He let's Volfie shift the cloth for a momemt, then says. "Let's find 'i m boy!"

Roughly two miles later, the game trail winds past a large pond fed by a spring. Reeds and sedges grow around the pond, and piping birds are audible over the gurgling of running water. The pond drains from a stream flowing southwards. A section of grasses has been cleared away near the north edge of the pond, revealing a small fire pit caked with ashes.

Minor Retcon

As the group is making their way through the forest, there's a sudden crashing sound nearby as a massive grizzly comes charging through the bushes. With a squeal of delight which forestalls any hostile actions from the rest of the group, Zirt jumps down from Gregarious' back and runs over to the grizzly to give him a big gnomish hug. "Jadrek, you're back! Who's a big fluffy cutie, hmm? You are, of course! Oh, everyone, this is my friend Jadrek! Hey Jadrek, wanna come with us? We're looking for this young Lander guy. Come on!"

Feel free to respond as a retcon as well, if you so desire. :)

Onix raises an eye as a bear joins the group, but ignores it. Bears were a noble creature, as thoroughly honest creatures. When they enter the makeshift campsite he looks around.

In a clear voice the Garundi man calls out, "It seems that the bandits have been surprised instead. Drop your weapons and your lives will be spared." He raises the enormous heavy crossbow, leveling it at the nearest bandit's head.

Ready action to shoot nearest bandit should they not comply.

That’s a large crossbow.

Rani’s bolt slams into the shoulder of one of the archers bloodying him. Despite the injury both archers return fire.

The mace-wielding bandit takes a step forward until he realizes that involves tangling with the unhappy grizzly guarding Zirt. Instead he retrieves a lumpy sack, bangs it against his knee, and tosses it at the big bear.

The sack explodes on impact with the beast’s side splattering the bear’s fur with rapidly hardening goop.

Jadrek huffs and tears through the goop effortlessly, then looks up at Zirt and gives a little growl. Zirt frowns at the bad men and nods at the bear, who immediately charges forward and attacks his attacker. The little gnome points at the one being mauled by Jadrek. "Hey you! You're a very bad man, and I bet your mother would be very ashamed of you! Have you ever thought of that? I bet you haven't!"

Will DC 15 or he's angered by the performance and seeks to harm the prankster. While the prankster maintains the mocking, the target takes a –2 penalty on all attack rolls and skill checks until it has successfully attacked the prankster with a melee or ranged attack, or has harmed the creature with a spell that deals damage.

What is the x south of Arnthoth, and is Volfie on the map?

Arnthoth moves straight south, drawing his lucerne hammer and swing at the archer across the creek.

Attack: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (14) + 6 = 20

Arn has Volfie hold, waiting to see if the archers still stand.

Is there a check to cross the creek?


The x is the campfire you guys were investigating. I forgot about Volfie. He's there now.

Realizing that perhaps this was a bad idea a moment too late, the bandit is unable to muster a defense before the huge ursine shape is on him. He cries out in pain when Jadrek takes a bite out of him but manages to stay on his feet. His fear of bears proves to be more powerful than his hatred of mocking gnomes.

With a sickening *crunch* Arn's hammer crashes into the wounded archer's side. He slumps to the ground, blood trickling from his mouth.

No special check needed necessarily. It's very difficult terrain.

"These bandits don't learn very fast," Rani mutters as he winds his massive crossbow with lightning speed. He then steps to the side to get a clear shot at the far assailant.

5'-step to P8, move action to reload crossbow, and fire: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (12) + 2 = 14 at the bandit who is not in combat; don't know if the colored squares provide cover, but if that hits, it does 1d10 ⇒ 8 damage.


Rani clips the second archer-bandit with a shot from his massive crossbow but he manages to recover in time to fend off the vicious Volf.

Despite the desperate situation, the bandit being mauled manages to bring his mace to bear against the bear.

The little gnome hurries over to give Jadrek a pat on the flank. "Good boy! You're so smart and good... and so strong! That was a very mean bandit... I wonder if these are the bandits that Lander was supposed to be out here finding? Or just some of them, perhaps?"

Arnthoth shrugs as he pats Volfie. "Hard to believe it's a co..cooo....coooincedence."


Searching the bandits, Onix finds no obvious evidence of their banditry but he does notice things that seem out of place.

1) The one bandit's mace and the undrawn daggers carried by the archers all bear the same maker's mark on their pommel - an eagle clutching a pair of tongs.

2) Around the bicep of each of the bandits is an identical ragged freshly healed wound like some kind of bite mark.

These were inflicted by a wolf or large dog.

It's fairly easy to pick up tracks in the soft marshy terrain. Two hours later, the party comes across a camp site.

A half-dozen tents form a semi-circle around a large fire pit in this clearing on a hillside. The smell of roasting meat wafts through the air, and a plume of smoke rises from the fire. Several large barrels sit beside the opening of the largest of the tents.

A powerfully built red-furred wolf-woman wearing a suit of stained chainmail is enjoying a haunch of meat while three more rough men in leathers laze about.
