The perception check was to see if you could act in the surprise round. Until we get to round 1, anyone you hasn't made a perception check may do so.

Rushing towards you are four large dire rats with a particularly anthropomorphic one loitering towards the back, with a cunning gleam in his eye!

Kn:Arcarna DC 14:

Filbert normally you can't attack and move in a surprise round. You are however due an AOO on purple if you threaten.

Filbert's haunts rip up various bits of broken and gnawed wood with terrible force but little accuracy. The bits sail past the rat pack harmlessly.

Agrippa is up.

2 things, 1) Lizzie has two racial sources of bonuses vs fear 2) if we are using the Fear and Sanity rules from the Horror campaign book, then immune to fear just means treats Fear two steps lower...

Palace of Birdsong| Shards of Oberon map | War for the crown maps

Apparently racial bonuses stack. Good call re fear level.

Bonus Types: Usually, a bonus has a type that indicates how the spell grants the bonus. The important aspect of bonus types is that two bonuses of the same type don't generally stack. With the exception of dodge bonuses, most circumstance bonuses, and racial bonuses, only the better bonus of a given type works (see Combining Magical Effects). The same principle applies to penalties—a character taking two or more penalties of the same type applies only the worst one, although most penalties have no type and thus always stack. Bonuses without a type always stack, unless they are from the same source.

Filbert's haunts propel part of a book back up with terrible force, but little accuracy. The ratlings above wince when the book fragment explodes into a cloud of shredded paper.

Luxina's second bomb is thrown with deadly accuracy. It detonates on the the creatures' face, and he squeaks in pain. The backwash of the explosion pulverizes the last remaining dire rat!

Crystal draws the bowstring to her cheek and with a twang-thwack the arrow suddenly sprouts out of the spell casting ratling's burnt torso.

A pair of heavy text books come falling down from on high, the first misses Luxina while the second strikes a glancing blow!

lol, the falling books could have only been better if the insomnia self help book was the last shot before making Lux unconscious.
Not wishing bad luck on her by any means, too often have my character spent a round or two on their back contemplating the future during combat.

Heinrich had more enthusiasm than ability as he tried to fence with the ratling, unfortunately his lunge didn't account for the things diminutive nature. As the lungs passes harmlessly over it's head, the ratling starts a chittering chant, and suddenly there is a blue flicker round it's paws and a whiff of ozone as it lunges for Heinrich!

Heinrich attempts to interrupt the ratling leader's spell-casting, but he's too nimble.

Filbert's haunts fling books back up with terrible force, smashing into the closest ratling! The pair of ratlings squeak in terror!

Luxina sends another deadly accurate arrow thudding into the leader's side, he grunts with pain, his side turning red with blood. Shuddering he squeaks in genuine terror, "WAIT! I'll tell you all his secrets! Whatever you want!"

With an edge of hysteria the wounded ratling squeaks, "The TATTERMAN'S! Yes, you know him, you all know him. The one that haunts your dreams, I know his secrets."

The ratling chitters and winces, clutching at his wounded side. Eventually he answers, 'A servant of the king in yellow! Long he has haunted Briarstone, so long he was nearly forgotten, a mere story to frighten children. But the tomes don't forget! They say he was here even before the Briarstone Witch. They say that she found him and did terrible things. After the vanishing he was forgotten like a bad dream. Till now."

Kn: History or Local DC 18:
The vanishing is a local legend. Supposedly hundreds of years ago the entire population of Thrudhmoor (the town nearest to Briarstone island) vanished over night. Supposedly the Briarstone Witch was to blame although the details are sketchy. Nobody believes the story of course.

Kn: Religion DC 20:
The King in Yellow is an honourific for The Great Old One Hastur. He is supposed to be a myth. You fervently hope that's true for the stories describe Hastur as a vile being of immense and alien power with unknowable intentions.

Sense Motive DC 15:
He very much doesn't want to die. He appears to believe this story although there is much unsaid.

Lizzie finally calms down, and feels disappointed that some strong feeeling of anxiety caused her to run away. She returns just as the questioning was going on.

Kn. Religion: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (17) + 4 = 21
Nice.
Sense Motive: 1d20 ⇒ 8

Some thought of worry slips to her mind.
"Err..team, that thing he's saying about 'The King in Yellow'?
I've heard of it before, and it's bad. It's a name given to a powerful being called Hastur. Supposedly it's something ancient of terrible power.
Scholars claim it to be a myth...but you never know, right?"

Palace of Birdsong| Shards of Oberon map | War for the crown maps

With enough ferocity to make you step back involuntarily, the ratling shouts, "NEVER SAY THAT NAME!" Panting due to the pain he shudders before adding in a whisper, "He can hear." His eyes bore into you with strange intensity as if silently willing you to obey.

Lizzie, not bigger than the rat, pats him on the head.

"Alright, i'll not say that name again.
Now, you said you will share secrets with us. I'll make no illusions, but wouldn't you rather be outside of this building, than stay here?
How about it, you help us sort things out in here, and i'll try and find somewhere you can live without having to worry about an evil sharing the building with you, when we get out."

Lizzie knows there's obviously objections from some of the team, but since the ratling isn't insulting them, and is genuinely scared senseless, she feels there might be some way for this creature to make up for his rudeness here.

She extends her little hand, as invitation to the agreement.

"By the way, do you have a name?"

Indeed. You might not want to get too close my dear diminutive friend. It might mistake your hand for a chew toy. Agrippa says to Lizzie

You may have Lizzie convinced, but I am far from. Now, continue...what purpose does this "Tatterman" have here, and is he responsible for the fog that enshrouds this place? Agrippa says, his rapier never falling, pointed straight at the heart of the ratling.

Palace of Birdsong| Shards of Oberon map | War for the crown maps

The ratling accepts Lizzie's hand and replies, "Name's Mamby. Ratch Mamby. Up there's Jenny Two-Tails on account of her two tails. Thing is we kind of like it here, many very tasty tomes..."

He looks at Lizzit shrewdly, "Still maybe we can come to some arrangement..." He was about to say more when Heinrich interjected. Ratch gives Heinrich a sour look before saying, "He serves his master's will of course. He does that by feasting on your nightmares, on your fear. What else would you expect from a native of the dreamlands?"

Of course that's only half an answer.
