Combat Map

Kerse, largest city in the Kalistocracy of Druma and settled on the banks of Lake Encarthan. It is here that you find yourself for a myriad of reasons. Whether you are chasing gold, looking for gainful employment or simply following the road where it leads you nonetheless spend some time walking the streets.

One thing that becomes evident over a couple of hours of traversing the city scape is that there are rumours of dark things in the foothills of the Five Kings Mountains, the mountain range that makes up one boundary of the Kalistocracy.

Most of the rumours seem to point at a local priest calling for adventurers. It appears that he is having little luck due to being unable to offer much in the way of recompense but the rumours seem to indicate a certain level of danger.

I'll be making up the encounter maps tomorrow afternoon/evening but feel free to introduce your characters for now.

Kara arrived at the city her eyes wide with amazement. the buildings, the people everywhere. she seemed so insignifcat compared to all the others.

She wandered the streets for several hours taking in all the sights and smells. she exitedly ran to a street vendor selling some sort of meat on a stick. quickly buys a couple she sooned moved on eating her snack and catching some street performers.

This place is amazing far more interesting than anyplace I've been to before she says to nobdy in particular.

finally she finds herself a small local eatery and decides to stop in for a more blanced meal at least better than that whatever it was on a stick Tastes like chicken

As she goes to eat, Kara catches sight of a piece of paper that somebody apparently dropped.

looks like somebody could use some help needed "adventurers"

she folds it up and places it in her bag and sits to enjoy her meal.

Heroden had just arrived in Kerse a few days ago, and was actually still taking in the sights and sounds of this place, so seemingly different from many others where he had been before, when he decided it was time to set himself into action.

He had enough time to shake the weariness from the road travel away, and was feeling quite himself again, so he decided it was time to look for employment - he had long ago learned that sometimes finding a local job (of course, one preferably relating to his capabilities as a combatant and making use of his Desna inspired powers) was the best possible way to understand the comings and goings of many a place he had visited before - the way employers carry themselves and the nature of the tasks at hand make for an excellent measure of how things work.

It was not long before after dropping a few silvers around that he got word that a fellow clergyman seemed to be looking for hired hand - adventurers one might say - I guess I can fit in that category - Heroden thought to himself with a smile.

After deciding on his course of action - he would visit this priest later during the day - he decided on a meal at an inn where he had been the day before, which appealed to him for its activity and the good quality of the food - anyone watching him approach would be surprised by the stark contrast of his white beard and hair with the young, jovial look on his face, which looks not a single day over 30 years of age, with piercing sky blue eyes.

Striding calmly up the street, a huge spear strapped across his back, in a crossing pattern with the javelin containing quiver, strapped the other way around. A well tended, long flowing pale grey robe covers his armored coat, which is in perfect conditions, well preserved and cared for. His steps are easy, without hurry, but sure ones, as his massive frame seems to easily carry his belic gear, as well as his backpack, and multiple items of survival gear - each of his strides reveals an unusual four pointed weapon with a handle, as if a mixture between a star and a multiple bladed dagger dangling at one of the sides of his hip, while on the other side sits a neatly accomodated heavy looking mace.

As he walks up to the entrance of the inn, he lifts his right hand, showing it clearly enveloped in an armored, spiked gauntlet, opening the door and stepping inside the hazy ambiance, bathed by a myriad of voices and the smell of different cookings.

At his neck, a beautifully crafted but simple bronze butterfly dangles freely, on a twined cord, as he rests his spear against the wall, taking a seat and addressing the inkeeper - Well my good man, what is in your menu today? he asks with a polite smile.

Will have an introductory post up soon. GM, can we get a discussion thread open? I wanted to do some out-of-game chatter before starting off.

HP 39/43, AC 18*, Fort+5, Ref +3*, Will +2*, Perception +8 Rage 7/11, Pepperbox 6/6

Whurly, I'm talking a couple liberties here- First, that we're here together. You're basically in charge of me. Have fun with that.
Second, that we've been sent here to meet with this priest about this dungeon, and that we've made it to the church without incident. Hope you don't mind. If you want to be out in town, then I can be here waiting on you to get back.

Draegar sat in the pews of the church quietly waiting for Whurly to finish talking to the preacher. The journey had been long and full of sunlight and trees, and all that godsforsaken sky.

Draegar hated it.

He was glad to be inside again, even if it was a building made of wood with tall ceilings and that weird glass that was made to catch the light as if it was designed specifically to annoy him.

He put his boots up on the pew in front of him, tipped his head back and in minutes was snoring loudly.

Silver Crusade

Draegar, you are not a dwarf but a Duergar, out of all things?!? It's OK, this will certanly be...interesting to say the least

What in the name of Trudd have I done wrong, what?!? How did I end up with...this?! - Whurly cast another glance at his resting companion. He was just about ready to return to the priest to whom he has just excused, when he heard it.

"Stop snoring you...you savage oaf! 'tis a place of worship, it is! Not proper for you, or any other lowbrow blunderer to be sawing wood in'ere" - Whurly tries to get Draegar "in line" in the most efficient way he knew - with a sharp kick to his feet.

"Now, listen'ere - I know you be mighty bored, and could be a bit tired from all the walkin' in the sun. Be still here for just a few more moments, until I try and understand if we can get some profit out of this, and I promise you that the moment we finish I'll take you to that nice inn across the place. A small barrel of strong dark ale awaits us there, OK?" - he shakes his ponytail, as if trying to emphasize his words, while talking.

Walking back to the preacher, he addresses him again: "Now padre, pardon again for this interruption, where were we? Ah yes, you were mentionin' some kind of dangerous job high up in the mountains, were you not?"

HP 39/43, AC 18*, Fort+5, Ref +3*, Will +2*, Perception +8 Rage 7/11, Pepperbox 6/6

Yep. Duergar. Go ahead and read my backstory. Your clan adopted me as a youth.

Draegar accepted the kick without complaint. He didn't look sullen or angry or anything really. He just took it, standing as his boots hit the floor.

"A'right." he rumbled in his deep and gravelly accent.

@ Heroden/Kara:
"Well, Master Dwarf," answers a jovial, almost rotund, barkeep, "We've a broth of barley and beef, as well as some roast beef with taters and other root vegetables. If that's not to your taste, we've also some chicken in a spiced sauce. We've a number of drinks to wash things down with, even some ales from the Five Kings."

For the sake of argument, we'll say that you two are eating at the same place. The inn across from the Temple of Abadar at which Whurly and Draeger are currently at.

Whurly/Draegar:
A dishevelled man in priest's robes sits, pushing some stewed meat around a bowl aimlessly when you approach. He jerks upright, almost as if started out of his wits, but he quickly recovers as you address him.

"Abadar be praised, someone has finally come," he says with a sign, motioning for you both to take a seat at his table, "Yes, there will be danger, I imagine. Nothing that hardy adventurers like yourselves couldn't take care of! The truth of it is that we've lost some trade shipments. In itself, this is nothing extraordinary. We lose shipments to bandits all the time, despite the best efforts of the guard. However, we usually either find corpses at the site of the robbery or receive ransom notes for further gold within a couple of days of the goods going missing. Neither has happened in this case, which I admit has me a touch concerned. I have a good idea from where these bandits are striking from and I'd like someone to check it out, even if just to put my mind to rest." He pauses for a moment, sipping some amber liquid from a mug at his elbow.

"I'm afraid that as this action is not sanctioned by the Church I am unable to offer recompense, however, you may keep whatever you find at the bandit's lair and I shall negotiate a charter which will permit you to sell any legal goods found at an increased price of ten percent. I trust that this is agreeable?" The priest looks at you expectantly.

Well then, do bring me a portion of that roast with some potatoes and a serving of vegetables. I'll take also a mug of an ale of your chosing and suggestion.

By the way DM Eunson, Heroden is not a dwarf, he is human :D

Kara carfully appraches the man with the spear Heroden

excuse me... sir? I couldn't help but notice you seem well ahhhh how can I say it...ready for a war or something. Is there a war? I hope you don't mean to go to war with the gnomes, I mean they are very peaceful folk and I really doubt that they would really cause anyone any trouble.
she puases a moment to catch her breath then produces the paper she found about the church needing adventurers.

maybe you are going here..where ever here is she says looking around not knowing where the church she is supposed to find is located.

Ohh I'm sorry, how silly of me, my name is Kara gnome of Whistledown
she extends her tiny hand to greet the man.

Heroden seems a bit taken by surprise by the inquisitive gnome's frontal questions and stares at the small one for a few short moments.

With an open smile, and extending his own hand to greet Kara, the man answers: "Well... I am not looking for a war, do not worry - I guess Desna cannot totally shake away my martial upbringing. But then again, she allows me the room to make my decisions and so I follow where the road takes me - it it takes me to war, it will be surely for a reason, but not today for sure, and I have never in my life held nothing against the gnomes" - "Regardless of the trouble they may, or may not cause" - he adds with a wink.

"Please do sit down with me, and allow me to offer you a drink, or a meal if you so desire - I believe we may be indeed heading in the same direction" - he comments while perusing the piece of paper - "I was intending to go find that same exact clergy representative after my meal - can I interest you in partaking of my roast?"

"Oh and by the way, my name is Heroden."

For some reason, I look at that avatar and think Dwarf. Hand wave the error as I can't edit it now.

"As you like," the barkeep replies, motioning to a waitress while he pours a dark ale into a clean mug.

"That'll be three silver and four copper," he remarks, setting the mug in front of Heroden.

"A dwarf I'd be, but stupid I am not!" - Whurly objects bluntly.

He raises his index finger towards the priest in front of him and continues: "As I see, you're offering me the followin' - us to take care of your goods disappearing business, and then we can hold as reward whatever we take from bandits cold, dead hands?! Does not sound like much of a deal, even with ten percent markup, especially since it's me neck, and of that youngster over here who's gonna be riskin'it! No, serrie!"

He hums and puffs for a few more minutes, waving his hands in the air. mentioning Abadar, dwarfs, gold, bargain, haggling and above all stupidity, before refocusing back.

"Tell ya what - you find us two...no, three things, and then you have a deal. First, make us a deal to sell at thirty - yes thirty percent markup, not stinkin' ten. Second - you find us more people. Just the kid and me simply won't do it. If they could take over a guarded caravan, then two of us is not enough. And thirdly - give us some healing in advance at least. Some potions, or salves or whatever. Then we have a deal!"

He casts a quick glance towards clearly disinterested Draegar, before locking gaze with the priest again unflinchingly. I sure do hope this bluff works, or come tomorrow there'll be Draegars boots on the menu...

Kara gladly accepts the offer to join she quickly hurries back to her table to grab her dinner only to find it has been cleaned up already
Drat I wasn't finished..oh well there is enough roast there to feed three of me

Kara slids on back with Heroden and grabs a small portion of the roast offered and orders an appropriately sized wine.

So if its not a war, then that means you are an adventurer. Have you ever met a gnome by the name of Glint?

Give me a Bluff check, Whurly. Add +2 to the check.

Sense Motive: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (6) + 3 = 9

Silver Crusade

Untrained bluff check 1d20 - 1 + 2 ⇒ (11) - 1 + 2 = 12

Shameless bump :D

The priest looks at Whurly and looks at him appraisingly.

"Twenty percent, I'll pass on anyone else that comes along and two potions of cure light wounds," the priest replies firmly, "And the charter will only apply for one week. I have my career to consider."

Smiling to Kara as they both taste from the meal in front of them, Heroden comments - "Actually no friend, I have met a couple of gnomes on the road, but none of them were named Glint as far as I can remember - why do you ask?"

Silver Crusade

"Well then, it would seem you have got yourself two dwarves, of a sorts, on your team. Now, how do we recruit more people?"

The priest shrugs a little. "Your guess is as good as mine. I've been trying to drum up interest for a week and I've had nothing except you two. Perhaps you can have better luck? Adventurers and mercenaries are more likely to work with others of their own kind. You could start in the inn across the road." He then picks up his fork and begins to attack his meal again but with renewed vigour.

Silver Crusade

I hope you guys will not mind me taking a bit of "artistic freedom", just to get this show running

"Haroomph. OK then. Lad and me will try to see if there's someone else willin' to stick 'is neck. Where do we find you later then - 'ere or somewhere else?"

With clear displeasure, Whurly picks up his stuff, gives a light nudge to the already snoozing Draegar, and with him in a tow walks to the inn across the street.

Several inns/empty conversations later, two "dwarves" show up at the table where a massive man with too many weapons next to him, and a jovial female gnome were discussing lightly.

"Pardon me for interruptin' your discussion, me name be Whurly Deepforger of the Bellowpiper clan. The lad 'ere is Draegar, and he's with me." - red haired dwarf pauses for a bit, as if to let the words "sink in" to the pair in front of him, before continuing.

"The two of ya seem like travellers, and very well armed, if I may notice. I like that. I'm not gonna waste your time good folks, and have you thinkin' I may be one of the local swindlers or somethin'. The lad here and me have struck a deal with a local priest to help him with some...difficulties regarding local trade and some missin' shipments. We might use a couple more skilled hands. Sure enough, there's a reward involved, a kind of. Not the best deal in the world, but when you're down on your luck, like the two of us, then you don't have much choice. So what say you - might you be interested?" - with a long sigh, Whurly ends his talk looking towards Heroden and Kara with not much optimism. It was obvious that he gave similar speech several times already, and his hopes were not that high.

Well the reason I ask is ....
Kara's sentence cut short by the appearence of the dwarves. she listens to the offer presentsed then glances at the paper she found.

presenting the paper to the dwarves

Is that what this paper is all about? I'm not to worried about a reward I am sure if there is a reward we will get what we are due. I myself can be content with whatever deal is out there.

perhaps this is the kind of thing Glint was talking about? interesting none-the-less, you would think he sent word here to have people in need seek me out Kara ponders the situation.

Draegar was quiet, as usual when they were in public, standing to the right and slightly behind of Whurly. The head of his long hammer was resting on the ground. He leaned on the haft like a walking stick and looked around the room with his odd all-grey eyes.

Smelling the unmistakable scent of alcohol, he tapped Whurly on the shoulder and nodded toward the bar, silently asking permission.

Heroden smiles openly while Kara speaks to the dwarf - "As Kara has put in a quite crystalline manner, it seems you may have found what you are looking for Master Dwarf"

Opening his arms wide, motioning for available seats around the table, he adds - "Do sit down and tell us more about these... Difficulties you said? And please feel free to help yourselves from the roast - it is quite good actually"

"I am Heroden, it is a pleasure to make your acquaintance"

Silver Crusade

Whurly motions for Draegar to sit, before sitting himself. He immediately orders some of his companion's favourite alcohol, two double doses (one for Draegar, and one for himself), and then turns to his new acquaintances.

"Good to meet you Master Heroden, Kara. As I was saying, lad here is Draegar, Draegar Ironhide, while I am Whurly Deepforger, both of the Bellowpiper clan." - he takes a long swing of his drink, and continues.

"The deal is the followin' - we met with some local priest of Abadar, just across the street. He claims that they've lost some trade shipments. Should not be a big deal since they loose shipments to bandits from time to time, but usually they either find some corpses at the site of the robbery or receive ransom notes for further gold after a couple of days of the goods going missing. This time they got neither, and that is what is strange. The padre, I mean the priest thinks he knows where these bandits are striking from and he'd like someone to check it out. Problem is that it is not sanctioned by the Church, so there's no official reward or advance money, but we managed to haggle for some healin' in advance. Plus a standard finders-keepers deal, plus a twenty percent markup on standard sellin' price of whatever we haul back 'ere. So, what say you - are ye in?"

HP 39/43, AC 18*, Fort+5, Ref +3*, Will +2*, Perception +8 Rage 7/11, Pepperbox 6/6

Draegar drinks deep and lets out a satisfied sigh.

One thing I'll say fer these surfacers, the burly grey-skinned dwarf thought to himself, not makin' brew outta tubers an' mushrooms makes for some interestin' variety. Not bad.

At the mention of his name he wiped his mouth with the back of his hand and nodded to the others in silent greeting.

Heroden listens quietly to Whurly, and his recount of the deal with multiple facets, before answering - "I can speak only for myself - I am mostly a wanderer at heart, but lets just be no-nonsense about it - I love a good ruffle with your average highway bandit, and I fancy myself as one of the good guys" - he says with a smile - "I am guessing that what you suggest throws in a a good chance to do both, and even if not, I have been looking for an employment in the region that matches my... abilities. So once our meal is ended, you can add me to your numbers, and we shall go to speak with this "padre" of yours if you so desire" - he finishes with a nod turning to Draegar.

Downing his lust cup, Whurly lets out a satisfying belch and gets up slowly, making sure that there is no more meat left on the table. He picks up his equipment, taps Haroden lightly on the ribs (he can't reach the shoulder) and leads them across the street.

"Lots a walkin' today, eh lad? But at least we ain't thirsty no more" - he winks to Draegar, while walking towards the place they meet the priest.

Draegar stands with Whurly, nodding and following. As they neared the door he sighed and put his hood back up to shield his eyes.

The priest looks up in surprise as the four of you troop back into the temple.

"You certainly waste no time, my friends," he says with a smile, indicating that you should take a seat at his bench. While you do, he pulls out a piece of parchment. On it is a crude approximation of the Five Kings Mountains although major landmarks are recognisable. With his right index finger, he stabs at a cave drawn on the map.

"I believe the bandits are using this cave as a hideout," he explains, "It has been used before although not for many years. It is within easy striking distance of the road. I believe it is here that you will find your prey." He pushes the map towards you.

"Are there any questions you would like answered before you leave?"

"I would question if you have any idea what kind of bandits we are talking about - would these be roving humanoids like goblins or orcs? Or are we talking more organized human akin ones, that have taken to banditry, in your opinion?"

"As we have little evidence, I'm afraid that I have little idea as to what kind of bandits they may be. Typically, bandits in this area are human, however," the priest states.

Kara wanders the church sanctuary looking for anything interesting.

eventually a thought crosses her mind as she is unsure of her mission from Glint

Is there a gnome settlement in the area? sounds like a wierd question, but i am curious

Silver Crusade

"Harooomph...so no idea who or what the brigands actually are? Could be humans, but...OK, and those missing trade goods - you need'em returned or what? What kind of goods is it? Any idea how many bandits to expect - a few, a dozen, several dozens? Is there anything else we should know of the area - some locals, wandering beasts, things like that?" - Whurly could be a lot of things, but one thing he was not - sloppy. He delved at the task at hand with his usual energy and meticulousness.

If there's one thing I learned so far, is that one can not be prepared enough. The more we know the better...

"What about those healing salves, potions? Will we be gettin' any, or...? Is there some map of the area available?" - he continues asking a veritable barrage of questions, all the while stroking his beard, his eyes trained at the priest.

"The goods are actually of little consequence, they've already been paid out for by our insurance. I have no ideas as to the number of bandits you may be facing. The rest of the area is fairly quiet, as it is managed forest for the production of timber and the raising of deer for leather and venison. An acolyte is fetching your potions just now and you may take this parchment which details roughly where the cave is," the priest says, motioning towards the parchment on his table. A few moments later, a young robed acolyte appears with two potions that clearly read "cure light wounds" on the label.

Party gains: map to the entrance of Purple Mountain, two potions of cure light wounds. Who wants to act as treasurer?

Your journey to the entrance of the cave is uneventful. Although the road is quite busy, there seems to be relatively little reason to be concerned about bandits. Indeed, the guard on most of the caravans that pass you seems quite light.

As you near the entrance, you notice a grisly sight. Several mules have had their throats cut and their corpses unceremoniously dumped at the mouth of the cave. It looms ominously in front of you.

Can I get a 2x2 marching order please? Whoever winds up in front, can I get a Perception check from both of you?

DM Rolls:
Party Initiative: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (8) + 3 = 11

that sounds good to me.

unfortunately Heroden is the only one without darkvision. and not really thinking I did not prepare a light spell either.

Prior to the cave entrance Whurly takes over the potions fro the acolyte, and distributes them to the party members. Scowling over the map they have received he looks at it's features, but not being trained to read (or draw) maps, he was having a hard time even determining where they were now in relation to where they should go. Finally he asks the priest to show them the locations, and tries to memorize them in the best way possible. It can be clearly seen from his movements that he is eager to get on the road.

I'm OK with going up front, although Whurly is an archer (OK, X-bow ranger), but since I have darkvision and rather high Perception, it makes sense.
I am assuming we are still outside, so my perception is "lower" by 2. If it is for inside "stonework" (I am assuming this cave qualifies as "stonework") then another +2 should be added.

Cave entrance His crossbow at the ready, Whurly nods lightly to Draegar showing him to take the right side, while he examines left side. He goes over the corpses briefly, and tries to peer into cave entrance in order not to be ambushed.

Draegar nodded and stepped out in front.

I've just now realised that the bulk of the critters in this first level have hatred against Dwarves and Gnomes. This should be fun!

As Draegar and Whurly step into the cave, they are suddenly beset upon by flying darts!

Surprise Round
Attack, dart 1 vs. Whurly: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (2) + 3 = 5
Damage, dart 1 vs. Whurly: 1d3 - 1 ⇒ (1) - 1 = 0

Damage, dart 4 vs. Draegar: 1d3 - 1 ⇒ (1) - 1 = 0
Critical confirm: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (9) + 3 = 12

Round 1
Attack, dart 1 vs. Whurly: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (18) + 3 = 21
Damage, dart 1 vs. Whurly: 1d3 - 1 ⇒ (1) - 1 = 0

Attack, dart 2 vs. Whurly: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (2) + 3 = 5

Attack, dart 3 vs. Draegar: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (8) + 3 = 11
Damage, dart 3 vs. Draegar: 1d3 - 1 ⇒ (1) - 1 = 0

Attack, dart 4 vs. Draegar: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (11) + 3 = 14
Damage, dart 4 vs. Draegar: 1d3 - 1 ⇒ (1) - 1 = 0

Although many of the darts strike true, they lack the power to punch through the armour of the dwarves although they do manage to cause some bruising.

Draegar and Whurly can now see four small creatures all with a blue skin tone and large black eyes. They are all within charge range.

Bah, you guys got lucky on the damage rolls! ;) Both Draegar and Whurly take 2 points of non-lethal damage. Kara and Heroden can now see them too.

We need to define who is in front because if Heroden is in the front line, he will probably charge in, but if he is not, he will delay his actions until the 2 dwarves have acted, to follow in their toe. According to the action resolution, we are assuming Whurly and Draegar are up front?

Heroden warns - "There!" - as he points to the strange creatures up ahead.

"Stay safe from those darts Kara - keep close to me!"

I am assuming that Whurly and Draegar have gone first, yes. You're in a 10' by 10' set of stairs that leads into the first room of the dungeon. Feel free to make kn (dungeon) checks for anyone who has it trained.

Also remember that with my initiative way of doing things, whoever posts first acts first. This is to avoid retcons and make it flow much easier.
