Trawets Aarock |
After a small amount of time Trawets says, "There are three magic auras on the snowman. The strongest is from the evocation school and the weakest the abjuration school. I may be able to identify the spells with more time."
Kn: Arcana: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (10) + 9 = 19
Kn: Arcana: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (14) + 9 = 23
Kn: Arcana: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (13) + 9 = 22
Lars Andronsa |
As Trawets took his time to study the peculiar guard left to delay, Lars walked back and stood by Meditrina "Talking snowmen...and all this time I used to ignore the ones the kids made in Kalsgard, will never be able to look at one the same again" He pulled his coat on even tighter "Should have moved further south when I had the chance" He commented, as he hid his gloved hands in the pockets of his coat.
DM DoctorEvil |
So, there is some ambiguity on how Detect Magic works against magical traps. AS a zero level cantrip, it likely should undo high end traps, and based on the majority of opinion, I will rule that you can determine the auras of any spells on magical traps, which I have posted for you to roll against. However, determining the actual spells can only be done once the spells are in effect. Untriggered effects will not be identifiable by Detect Magic in other words...Hope that makes sense.
From this distance, Lars does not see any traps on the snowman (nor has it spoken...yet). Trawets continues to study the magical auras but notices only one spell effect currently. He analyzes the dweomer trying to ID it.
The rest of the crew remains still standing about 30' from the snowman guardian.
Meditrina Vanhishikha |
Oh my god, I am such an idiot I forgot I had this skill...
Spellcraft: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (10) + 6 = 16
"I think...that its an Alarm Spell", Meditrina remarks uncertainly. "There is a strong likelihood that this is just another trap set by the Bandits, and as such, Trawets estimated difference should allow us to remain undetected".
DM DoctorEvil |
Realizing that the snowman is enchanted with at least an Alarm spell, the party makes the decision to circumvent the snowy guardian.
Movement through the deeper snow off the trail is difficult, but not impossible, and soon the party is at the edge of the frozen water. A solid sheet of ice extends across this stream while snow-covered rocks line the far bank.
Entering an icy square costs 2 movement points and Acrobatics checks are at a -5 penalty. A DC 10 Acrobatics check is required to run or charge across the ice. Who goes out on the ice first?
Trawets Aarock |
It was my idea, I should probably lead the way and I do have some magical cold protection.
Trawets walks to the front, "I'll go first since it was my idea."
Trawets gingerly puts a foot on the ice and starts to carefully shuffle across the ice.
Double move across the creek.
DM DoctorEvil |
Talon: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (16) + 6 = 22
Lars: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (17) + 2 = 19
Meditrina: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 2 = 8
Agatha: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (18) + 1 = 19
Trawets: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (14) + 2 = 16
Ice Elem 1: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (5) - 1 = 4
Ice Elem 2: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (3) - 1 = 2
Trawets unhesitatingly walks out onto the ice. He slowly makes his way across followed closely by Lars and Talon. Agatha is just read to step out, when a cracking and crunching sound comes from the ice below the party.
Alerted by the vibrations on the frozen creek surface, 2 small sized creatures made totally of ice appear suddenly from below the icy stream.
"Intruders, we must keep our forest safe. From the intruders..."
Lars Andronsa |
Grinning Lars steps forward, his hand instinctively working the mechanisms of his shield causing it to snap into place at his forearm, and his right hand unsheathes a dart with a flash silvery metal "Lets watch our footing, and focus on the one closer to us" He motions to the elemental with his drawn dart, and then prepares himself to intercept its attack.
Okay Lars will move 10 feet towards the elementals, since he's on icy ground that means that costs 20 feet of movement. Free actions to draw his shield and dart, and last but not least another move action to use Freebooter's Bane on the Elemental closest to us.
Freebooter's Bane: The freebooter and her allies gain a +1 bonus on weapon attack and damage rolls against the target. This ability applies only to allies who can see or hear the freebooter and who are within 30 feet of the freebooter at the time she activates this ability.
So in short anyone who starts after Lars gets this bonus, and for the ones who start before and are still within range get it next round.
Talon Thief-taker |
I delay until after Lars.
Talon activates his spring-loaded wrist sheath, and a dagger of smooth cold iron shimmers briefly in the cold.
A moment later, he flicks it toward the nearest ice creature with deadly accuracy.
Thrown Dagger Attack vs. flat-footed AC: 1d20 + 4 + 1 ⇒ (20) + 4 + 1 = 25 for damage: 1d4 + 1 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 + 1 = 6 sneak attack dmg: 1d6 ⇒ 2
crit confirm: 1d20 + 4 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 4 + 1 = 11 for damage: 1d4 + 1 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 + 1 = 6 additional crit dmg.
sneak stab: 1d8 ⇒ 7 sorry, Talon rolls a d8 for sneak attack with his daggers, so I should have rolled this rather than the d6 above for sneak attack dmg.
DM DoctorEvil |
Wishbone Creek - Round 1 - continued
Lars advances carefully over the ice, readying his shield, a dart, and placing his bane on the nearest ice creature.
Talon throws his cold-iron dagger at the nearest elemental. The throw is long but on target. Smashing into the icy monster for 6 damage.
Pesky rules...Two things: 1) range increment on a thrown dagger is 10' which means you take a -6 penalty on this throw. Still a hit, thanks to your good roll. 2) Elemental traits means that the target cannot be critically hit, flanked, or damaged by precision damage such as sneak attacks. You still do the base damage however.
Agatha delays, swinging her sword in expectation, hoping the ice creatures come to her.
Just tell me when you want to come off delay, Agatha.
Walking forward through the deep snow on the far bank, Trawets casts a defensive ward protecting himself from harm.
Meditrina draws her scimitar and steps out on the ice ready to strike in the next combat round.
The first ice creature slides across the ice without impediment and slams a mighty limb into Lars. The second creature double moves next to Lars also. The heavy blow is deflected by Lars, without taking any damage.
Ice 1 Slam: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (12) + 4 = 16
End of Round 1
Agatha Bjoernsdottir |
Agatha would move as soon as the one comes close. Taking a 5foot she starts swinging and raging.
attack: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (16) + 8 = 241d8 + 9 ⇒ (5) + 9 = 14
Lars Andronsa |
Utilizing the momentum of his enemy's blow, Lars spins in the direction its guiding him to, bringing the dart he held dangerously close to his opponents face, but then it casually drops from his hand and his other hand comes soaring slamming the edge of his shield into the face of the elemental. His now free hand draws his battle axe with great speed and immediately he hacks at the lower part of the elemental's body and finally goes for a horizontal strike aimed at its upper body.
Attack Roll: 1d20 + 4 + 1 ⇒ (11) + 4 + 1 = 16
Damage Roll: 1d8 + 3 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 3 + 1 = 6
Okay, if Agatha attacks the one that has Freebooter's Bane on it and kills it, Lars will use his move action to place Freebooter's bane on the other elemental and attack it instead, Free actions to drop the dart and draw the battle axe of course. If not Lars will attempt to finish off the elemental Agatha attacks.
Talon Thief-taker |
My bad on the dagger range increments...
Talon circles around behind one of the creatures, attempting to flank with Lars, then attempts to stick his dagger into the frosty creature.
"Everything has been so welcome to those just passing through," Talon observes wryly.
acrobatics to avoid AoO: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (3) + 7 = 10
Dagger Attack: 1d20 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (12) + 2 + 1 = 15 for damage: 1d4 + 1 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 + 1 = 6

Wishbone Creek - Round 2
19 Lars
22 Talon (delayed prior round)
16 Trawets
8 Meditrina
4 Ice #1
19 Agatha
Lars drops his dart and switches to battle axe in the same smooth striking motion that chips the ice elemental for 6hp dmg.
Talon moves around the elemental striking it from behind, but since the creature is just a big blob of ice, it senses him coming and the attack fails.
The creature also slams at Talon as he moves, hitting for 6 hp dmg including the bone-chilling touch of the icy creature.
Remember when I said above, that elementals can't be flanked? Without the flanking bonus, you miss even with Freebooters Bane added.
Trawets move as swiftly as he can along the bank and then down to the middle of the icy stream behind the elementals.
Moving forward and swinging her scimitar, Meditrina misses connecting with the extra-planar creature.
After slamming Talon on his move, the creature then steps back and slams at him once again, but this time the attack misses.
Elemental AoO: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (20) + 4 = 24
Crit Confirm: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (6) + 4 = 10 FAIL
Dmg + Cold: 1d4 + 1 + 1d3 ⇒ (4) + 1 + (1) = 6
Elemental Slam: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (2) + 4 = 6
Agatha up to end the round, and perhaps the whole fight if she can land a good one.
Lars Andronsa |
Noticing the elemental reacting to Agatha's attack, Lars lowers his stance and aims a diagonal hack at his foes lower body, then pulls his axe back and follows with a vertical slice aimed towards its head.
Attack Roll: 1d20 + 4 + 1 ⇒ (20) + 4 + 1 = 25 ALRIGHT!
Damage Roll: 1d8 + 3 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 3 + 1 = 9
Crit Confirm: 1d20 + 4 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 4 + 1 = 6 Oh well, its still a hit with decent damage!
DM DoctorEvil |
Wishbone Creek - Round 2 - concluded
Agatha's attack fails, while mighty, fails to connect with the remaining ice creature.
End of Round 2
Talon, you may have missed Meditrina's channel at the end of the Atomie fight for 3 hp. With that on board, I have you with 1/11 hp and still up and about...for now.
DM DoctorEvil |
Wishbone Creek - Round 3
19 Lars
22 Talon
16 Trawets
8 Meditrina
4 Ice #1 (6hp dmg)
19 Agatha
Lars strikes diagonally across the body of the elemental, striking it quickly and hard, mirroring the successful tactics of Agatha. Like the Ulfen lady, his attacks succeeds and he gives a shout of triumph as the last ice creature shatters into bits, ending the combat.
End of Combat
Defeating the two small ice elementals earns the players 200xp each. That boost makes the cumulative total for the party 1002/2000 or just about halfway to level 2. Keep up the good work!
Lars Andronsa |
We are far from acting like a team Added Lars mentally as he surveyed what was left of their foes carefully checking for anything of interest but keeping his distance from the area they tried to avoid.
"Just go for the ones I am fighting, for some reason I seem to attract the attention of these things" Said Lars, not removing his focus from his searching.
Feeling a bit better, but if I stop posting for 24 hours in the next few days, please do not panic and DM PC me as needed.
Lars Andronsa |
A sigh formed a small cloud in front of Lars' face when he saw the wounded Talon begin gathering wood, after a few moments of hesitation he abandoned his search and made his way towards the bounty hunter "You know even I am not cold enough to let a wounded man do manual labor, give me what you gathered and go rest somewhere" A disapproving gleam was in his eyes despite the neutrality of the expression on his face.
Lars Andronsa |
"Why are you strong, silent type so stubborn?" Sighed Lars as he turned from Talon "If you faint because of exhaustion I won't carry you, this you brought upon yourself" He then points to Agatha "She'll lug you around, and I think I'd be gentler" A small smile crossed the former pirate's face as he went back to checking on the remains of the elementals.
