Another Ambush - Round 3 - concluded
Agatha charges after the withdrawing mephit, her blade swinging in wide arcs, cutting into the magical beast, but even though her attack is fierce, the outsider doesn't seem to take all the damage from her blow. Still it does appear seriously wounded.
End of Round 3
DM DoctorEvil |
Is anyone else in range to hit her after a move action?
I am not sure what this means. Guidance is a touch spell, and Agatha charged out of range on her turn. You can double-move and be near her, but not cast, or you can cast on one of the others who are all within touch range. I have already moved you one move action to the present place on the map.
DM DoctorEvil |
It means, can I touch someone with Guidance, and can someone make immediate use on it by moving and hitting an enemy on their turn.
The map is linked at top of the page. It's there to solve questions like that. Lucien, who is using a ranged weapon, can benefit the most from the guidance spell. Please take an action or pass.

Another Ambush - Round 4 - continued
Meditrina casts a spell, touching Lucien and giving him the tiniest bit of divine inspiration as he prepares to attack.
The air elemental comes to the aid of its mephit master, swinging in behind the Ulfen barbarian and slamming at her from behind, hitting her for 3 hp damage.
Air elemental slam, flanking, vs charge AC: 1d20 + 6 + 2 ⇒ (11) + 6 + 2 = 19
Dmg, Agatha: 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3
Trawets, Lucien (with guidance), and Talon are all up now against the flying foes.
Talon Thief-taker |
Looks like I can just make it into a flanking position with Agatha. I'll move to that spot, if so.
Talon rushes forward and stabs at the fey with his short sword, hoping to end the threat.
short sword: 1d20 + 5 + 2 ⇒ (18) + 5 + 2 = 251d6 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 1 = 7
In the event I can't make it that far for difficult terrain or what not, I'll throw a dagger instead, which would subtract 6 from this roll for a 19. I'll also roll damage if I have to throw a dagger.
dagger: 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4

Another Ambush - Round 4 - continued
Trawets blasts the ice mephit with a force missile, blowing it out of the air, it spirals to the ground unconscious.
Lucien fires another pair of arrows, but misses again twice.
Talon leaps forward, flanking the quick-moving air elemntal with Agatha, and striking it a damaging blow with his shortsword.
With Izoze out of the fight, Agatha is next.
Agatha Bjoernsdottir |
Seeing red agatha strikes again attack: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (20) + 11 = 311d8 + 9 ⇒ (8) + 9 = 17

Another Ambush - Round 4 - concluded
Agatha, falling into rage, drives her weapon into the air elemental slashing and cutting her way completely through the last enemy which drops the enemy, ending the fight.
End of Round 4
Defeating both the mephit and the elemental earns each player 300xp. That moves the cumulative total for the group to 3822/5000 or about 61% to level 3.
DM DoctorEvil |
It is no real surprise that the air elemental has no treasure, and neither does the dead ice mephit.
Remembering the map in the lodge, you know you must be within a a few miles of the area marked in the map with an X, which was in the center of the Somir Valley, where you now stand.
Anyone else want to rest for the night? Or do you want to push on to see what is up around the next bend?
Talon Thief-taker |
I'm down 6 hp...I could use a heal if any is available. Other than that, I'm good to continue, but trust our casters will let us know when we need to rest.
Talon winces as he touches his wounded shoulder. After staunching the flow of blood, he bundles himself up tightly and prepares to continue their freezing journey.
DM DoctorEvil |
Meditrina channels the warm positive energy of Sarenrae once more, and the group decides to strap it on and try one more encounter before resting for the night.
The channel puts everyone but Agatha at full HP, and her at 22/24 if my calculations are correct.
The snow in the valley is deep, but the wind is not as strong. Looking at the horizon, you can see the center of the storm, a swirling mass of wind, snow and black storm clouds seems to be fairly close to you.
The walk through the valley floor takes about 45 minutes, the epicenter growing ever closer and the air temperature dropping seemingly with every step.
Enough for one more DC 18 Fort save for Talon or take 1d6 non-lethal and be fatigued. The next encounter will take a little prep on my part and therefore will need to be done later tonight. Back later.
DM DoctorEvil |
Climbing the last rise, you can literally hear the wind whistling through the air. The path becomes buried under about 3 ft of snow crusted over with frozen sleet. The trees to either side of the path are heavy with a burden of ice causing them to bow until many limbs touch the ground, becoming one with the wintry landscape.
As you top the rise, a strange scene opens up before you. Four ice molded igloos are built in a small clearing while a cave mouth opens to the north.
From what you can make out in the blowing and drifting snow, all the wintry weather in the Border Woods is blowing through a strange portal west of the igloos. The force of the wind and weather has uprooted several trees nearby and icicles and ice boulders surround a 10' opening that swirls and spins, icy winds and driving snow blasting from that vortex.
The visibility become very poor as the snow fills the air in this area, swirling up into the heavens to fall in some other part of Taldor.
New map is attached at top. Once you get off the ice encrusted path, snow covered squares are worth 4 movement points and overland movement is cut by 75%. Visibility beyond 10' is impossible, and creatures 5' away have concealment (25% miss chance).
Talon Thief-taker |
Hmmm...I'm having some second thoughts about going forward without resting. This is kind of looking like a big boss encounter to me. I'm fatigued and Meditrina is out of spells (guessing Trawets is missing some, too). What about turning back, having Lucian make a nice survival check to find us a good place to make a fire without being seen, and then going into this full-strength? That's my vote, anyway, after seeing this swirling portal.
DM DoctorEvil |
The group back tracks a good bit, getting as far from the blowing and drifting snow and the strange ice shelters as possible before trying to find a place to bed down for the night.
Snow starts falling as they make camp, and the wind begins to whip up a real blizzard, making rest and recovery quite uncomfortable. A fire helps keep the worst of the cold away, but no one sleeps well in the miserable conditions.
But the night passes without incident and the group, not quite refreshed, but a bit more healed and with their magic abilities renewed, makes ready to head for what might be the end of the line.
Please list your newly prepared spells here or in Discussion. Looks like everyone goes in fully healed and ready to roll.
Talon Thief-taker |
Feeling much better, Talon exits the snow cave he had slept in cold but not otherwise dying.
"Let's get this over with," he says as he looks back in the direction of the swirling snow. "Everyone ready?" he says as he eats some trail rations and then leads out.
perception: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (6) + 5 = 11

Trawets Aarock |
"I should be able to help you today Talon. This spell will protect you from the cold. I'm a little less prepared offensively but you will be at your best today." Trawets then says a few arcane words and touches Talon on the shoulder and then does the same to himself.
Before we get to the center, about 20 minutes out, Trawets will cast mage armor on himself.

Talon Thief-taker |
Talon looks relieved as Trawets casts the spell on him.
For the first time in what seems like a month, the rogue does not feel the extreme discomfort from the cold.
"Thanks, wizard. I owe you one," he says.
He then prepares to advance toward the ominous portal, sticking to cover. already rolled stealth
DM DoctorEvil |
The sky is darker today, the storm blowing from the winter portal somehow stronger. Once awakened, the group makes ready to investiaget the portal, hoping still to end the unseasonable weather covering the Border Wood and surrounding areas.
As they approach, the casters ward off the cold using Endure Elements and Trawets puts up his arcane armor, expecting a fight.
The portal continues to put out snow and wind, reducing visiblity to barely 5' in front of you.
Remember all movement in snow-covered squares is at 1/4 base speed due to the very deep snowfalls. Any creature 5' away has a 20% miss chance, and distances beyond 10' have total concealment and are impossible to see.
