Shingles Chase - Round 5

Crux again advances one card (to 8), firing his web bolt at the fleeing Trinia. This time the nimble girl is able to avoid being grappled by the webs immediately.

Moving slowly and carefully, Marnos advances to card 5.

Graxton hollers at the vagrant man who fails to move out of the way and is then run down by the large orc priest. Unfortunately, the action slows down graxton enough that he cannot advance and remains at Card 5 with the man still in his way.

Decidedly undazed now, Lazlo attempts to scramble up a very steep roof to intercept the fleeing girl and have a chance to nab her. Failing to quickly climb, he advances to Card 8, but misses the chance to grab Trinia.

She must still save vs webs to move out of the square or be grappled again. Sorry, Graxton, have to make the skill check required. IF you miss by 5 or more, no advance. Need a post from Kalvin then Trinia can finish the round.

Its alright, I know I am pretty much out of this rooftop chase and just seeing how far he can get before she gets away or the others catch her.

Graxton will try to remember the Vagrant's face, for her will likely come back for blood. Not feeling ready to spill it yet.

The chase is mostly dex based, so a big war-cleric probably isn't the best candidate for the pursuit. Maybe Lazlo or Crux will catch her eventually, the rest just need to plod along as best they can.

I will DM-PC for Kalvin if he hasn't posted by this evening.

Kalvin tries to hurry ahead, and while he makes one of the barriers, squeezing through a narrow gap in his heavy armor, he fails to navigate a narrow ledge, and is slowed down enough to advance just one card.

Seeing no one immediately behind her, Trinia tries to put a little more distance between her and her pursuers, looking to advance two cards. She is faced with a crumbling tile roof, that falls apart a bit with each step she takes. Walking as gingerly as she can, she slips and slides, and is only able to advance to card 10.

Marnos, the text says treat each card as an effective distance for ranged attacks and spells as 30'. Since you are 5 cards behind her, that's a range of 150' so Daze won't work. Even Crux at 60' away (2 cards) is out of range for such a spell.

Crux and Lazlo are two cards away, so if they can make one skill check on Card 8, they can get to within grappling range of Trinia once again. The whole party is up, trying to stave of disaster and capture the king's murderess.

Crux advances to within 30' of the fleeing Trinia and fires another dose of webbing at her, trying to slow her escape. The web fills the rooftop area where the girl is, but she remains unfettered at this point.

She has to escape artist again to leave the area without being caught up in it again.

Marnos runs down the same rooftop vagrant that has been getting in the way of all the heroes, and as the man moves out of the way for Kalvin, he steps right into the path of the oncoming servant of Erastil. Slowing so as to not knock the man from the rooftop, Marnos is able to advance only 1 card.

With his path cleared, Kalvin leaps ahead of Marnos and Graxton ending the round on card 7.

Not spying the shortcut, and narrowly avoiding the reaching arms of the stealthy choker, Lazlo leaps to the rooftop next to Trinia. Having failed to grab the slippery girl more than once, he concentrates all his effort into a grab. He yells in triumph as his arms close around the girl, holding her fast and ending the chase.

Crux hurries to get to Lazlo and Trinia. Along the way he queries Majenko concerning the disposition and location of the crowd. "Miss Sabor," he begins as he starts to open the package he is carrying, "We were sent to assist you. Please allow us to do so. As proof I offer you this disguise to help you get past the ravening mob." He holds out the robe and bandages for her to see.

Trinia is not pleased at being caught, and rather than obeying and getting into the disguise right away, she breaks down in tears. "Your working for the Queen, I know it. Now it's only a matter of time before I'm dead. I didn't even do it! I don't know why she hates me so." She slumps to the ground refusing to get up.

Majenko flies a reconnaissance circle, and reports that a squad of Hellknights is currently breaking in the door of Trinia's building, and soon they will know she fled into the Shingles.

He urges you to move quickly to get away from here, and can offer an aerial view of the best path of escape, communicating telepathically with Crux.

Lazlo volunteers to head back to Trinia's and lead the Hellknights on a wild goose chase, if you wish.

With some prodding and pleading, Trinia gets up and you move off to Marcus's house, which is the closest safe place you can think of. The old man opens the door eyes wide. "Is this who...I think it is? What are mixed up in now, Kal? Trouble, I tell you this city, this Queen, nothinb but trouble."

Still red-eyed, it seems Trinia is resigned to her fate. When you speak to her she only sighs and looks mistily into the distance. "Kill me now or turn me over the result is the same. You must know I am not guilty. My fate is in your hands alone. Let me go, hide me, just don't turn me over to Her. She will kill me, just like she killed the king!"

To Kalvin: "Aren't I the obvious fall guy? Me, a poor artist, why would I kill the king? What do I gain from it except the end of a rope? "I've told you everything I know!" shouts the girl exasperatedly. "You don't have to believe me, but you do have to know that turning me over is the same as killing me yourselves. Once the Queen has me, I will die, and I will die innocent. Can you live with yourself for that?" She looks at each of you, from eye to eye. "I expected more from a paladin of the Inheritor. Don't you stand for justice? Is that what this is? Railroading a poor girl, so the Queen can get away with regicide?"

Certainly, with the mob and the Hellknights out on the street, the girl doesn't stand a chance at a trial -- they'll lynch her the moment they find her. Graxton agrees with Marnos stating it with a grunt.

It sounds as if you are agreed to turn the girl over to Field Marshal Croft? If not, please speak up soon.

Resigned to her fate, Trinia does not fight or struggle as you move her from the relative safety of The paladin's mentor's home back to The Korvosan Guard at Citadel Volshyenenk.

She looks down at her feet the entire time and with her disguise is not recognized on the street. Even before you reach the Citadel, you run into a patrol of guards, the captain wearing the pseudodragon emblem.

"You say you have the king's killer?" queries the captain disbelievingly. "And you want me to take her back to the Citadel and to Field Marshal Croft? I don't see her here, just some grimy vagrants."

As you reveal Trinia's nature, she sobs softly but follows the soldiers. The guard captain looks around continually, more agitated and nervous then usual. "You had better come along too. I hear Croft would like a word. Seems some Shoanti boy has gone and gotten himself killed, and the rest of them are on the warpath over it If it ain't one riot it's another, but the Shoanti, that'd be a deadly war."

Moving down the streets with an armed company of soldiers feels much safer, and though you run into a trio of Hellknights when you reach the Midlands, the soldiers and the disguise keep the situation from becoming untenable.

Soon you are all safely in the Citadel once again, Trinia spirited off to a holding cell deep under the tower. You find yourselves waiting in the Marshall's outer office once again.

It's not long before Croft opens her door and ushers you in. To your surprise she is not alone this time. With her is a tall, rail-thin Shoanti man of about 60 winters. He leans heavily on a walking stick, which appears to be the polished femur of a giant beast crowned with a firepelt cougar skull. He wears a shirt decorated with countless jangling animal bones, many painstakingly scrawled with dozens of tiny symbols and glyphs. A bearskin cloak is draped around his bony shoulders, and warpaint in the shape of a skull decorates his face. The Shoanti's eyes are milky as if he were blind, but it doesn't appear he has any trouble seeing. Perched regally on his shoulder is a red-feathered razor crow which watches you all warily as you enter, turning its head from side to side to get a good view.

"This," says Cressida by way of introduction, "is Thousand Bones, a Way-Keeper for the Skoan-Quah, the Clan of the Skull. Sit and listen for a moment, we may have more work for you yet."

She goes on to tell you of an unfortunate incident that occurred in the latest unrest. Racist thugs apparently used the mob uprising to fuel their own agenda, attacking a group of peaceful Shoanti traders in the city, and killing one and wounding several others. The dead boy, named Gaekhen, is grandson to Thousand Bones, who has preached non-violence in the long-running feud between Korvosa and the Shoanti natives. She then turns the floor over to the Shoanti chieftain, the old shaman speaking in a deep voice, his words carefully chosen, but delivered with barely restrained anger.

"My people have worked hard to understand yours, yet it seems each day we see new examples of how your people work just as hard to foster old hatreds. My grandson is dead, beaten to death by cowards in your city street. I do not blame you, yet still Gaekhen is dead, and my son and his kin are not so forgiving as I. They wish to return to the Skoan-Quah in the Cinderlands, to join with the Sklar-Quah and rally to war against Korvosa. This would be disastrous, for both our peoples. Amends must be made."

"Our ways are not as yours. If a body does not go whole to the fires of the gods, the smoke of a warrior's spirit cannot rise to the Great Sky. If I could send Gaekhen's body to the Great Sky with honor and dignity, his father and brothers would listen to me and stay their wrath -- the talks of peace between my people and yours can continue. But he was not just murdered. His body was taken from the scene of his death, sold by a peddler of corpses to a necromancer named Rolth, a criminal to both our people. I have spoken with the spirits, and they have revealed to me that Gaekhen's body has been taken to a place below your boneyard, a place the spirits call the Dead Warrens"

"With this knowledge, I could surely lead a group of my finest warriors into your boneyard to retrieve Gaekhen's body, but this would be seen as an act of aggression by your people. No, it falls to you to make amends for what has been done. You must bring me Gaekhen's body, lest we be forced to recover him ourselves. And although it pains my heart to say it -- we will not be gentle if it comes to this."

Thousand Bones then rises, nods curtly to the Field Marshal, and leaves the room to return to his people and await the delivery of his grandson's body.

"I must apologize for the behavior of Thousand Bones," says the Marshall politely. "But, you must understand, one rash deed may undo his entire lifetime of work to repair relations between the City and the People of the Cinderlands. I agree with his assessment to a great extent; someone tied to Korvosa needs to find the lad's body and return it to the Skoan-Quah or things will quickly go from bad to worse."

"Normally, I would contact the Church of Pharasma to organize the expedition to the warrens of the city's graveyard, they have purview over that area, but since your group has proven so capable, you are my first choice to handle this.
