Devan smirked as Atticus expressed his disdain for the jeering of the crowd, continuing to play as he spoke. "Not stupid, just ignorant. We took away their meal ticket, and they don't realize that they were likely dining upon their neighbors. They're so anti-government right now, they probably wouldn't believe us if we spoke the truth, so best to just hurry."

The young man arched a brow as the dark-haired woman offered surprise at their success. As promised, Devan speaks on Verik's behalf. "Nargun here is correct...Vancaskerkin was corrupted by the Meliya woman. Perhaps there was even some magical enticement. Even so, I think his intentions were good. Still deserted, though, so whatever. Make sure the other three have nice, slow, painful deaths, as they added murder and worse to their list of crimes."

The musician smiled as Kroft pulled forth the reward for the deserters' capture, bowing lightly as she spoke. "As you command, Marshal. I don't know about these others, but I could use the rest." Indeed, while in good spirits, the bard has dark circles under his eyes and the look of a man recovering from a long and deadly malady. Now that the adrenaline has slowed and the task is complete, the young man felt exhausted.

Devan has no intention of staying in the Citadel...perhaps a silly notion, but he'd prefer to not be staying in a building full of lawmen after his rather lawless past. He thought perhaps it was silly, but with accommodations cheap at the Juggler, why not? Besides, it was probably hard to get a server to bring you a drink at the guard barracks, and he doubted an off-duty patrolman would take kindly to such a request. Or possibly would react TOO kindly.

As the group split the reward, the musician smiled, counting out in his head his accumulated wealth. He bid the others good-bye, for now, promising to meet up with them at the Juggler later. He strolled through the Heights, finally coming to a stop at a certain shop. After taking a deep breath, he pushed through the door, immediately stalking toward the display that held the ring he had given Joline just a few weeks earlier...

As they marched along to the Citadel Twilight mulled over the recent events. She was in a foul mood and the jeering crowds only made it worse.

She didn't like having to break up the free food, she really didn't like what had been going on in the shop and now she wasn't happy about the inevitable backlash from the people.

On more than one occasion she nearly snapped at the crowd about the meat that was being given away, but Devan's words to Atticus were right, the crowds were unlikely to believe her words, and so shew stewed in silence.

To try and distract herself she started considering what Meliya might have been trying to play at with this plan. If it was really to look good by helping the people, why use deserting guardsman who would inevitably be investigated? She could have hired some random people for coppers to do this work and the guard would never have batted an eye, so there must have been a specific reason for using guardsmen.

She looked around at the thinning crowd as they last few straggler hurled some final insults at the queen before turning to the group. "This whole operation was to discredit the guard. There was no point to using deserters from the guard unless Meliya wanted the guard to break up the operation. She likely knew Kroft couldn't let desertion slide at a time like this and would have to send someone to bring them in. Couple that with the charity that was being offered and we have what we see now, the guard looking like they are quashing attempts at helping the people."

At the Citadel Twilight let Devan explain the situation to Kroft. Verik had admitted that he had chosen his own crew so he was partially responsible for their atrocities in her mind. As such she was not as inclined as Devan to speak on the man's behalf.

After receiving payment she spoke "Thank you Marshal. Would you be able to arrange a detail to recover the remains of those butchered at the shop? Whatever is left of those unfortunates deserve a proper burial instead of being left in whatever offal heap they ended up in."

With that Twilight was looking forward to a much needed rest.

Mirela shakes her head sadly as she sees the reaction of the townsfolk.
They should know what they ate, but what good would it do now? If we told them it would just weigh on them for life... No better they remain unaware...
With those thoughts spinning in her mind she nods at Devan's words about the townsfolk.

In the Citadel Mirela hangs back and lets the others do the talking until Devan starts to defend Vancaskerkin.
No matter why 'e did it, that man still abandoned 'is post in the cities 'our of need. Doing so with 'is squad may well have allowed greater loss of life in this chaos then he would have saved by giving out that meat. People are not starving, and missing meat with a dinner or two is not equal to standing by as the city falls apart. Now if there was magic used on 'im, then that's un thing, but I think that's just a guess. Without knowing more, it seems 'e is just another deserter.

After meeting with the captain, Mirela will make sure everyone is fully healed of damage before they split up the treasure and sell the items.

After splitting the loot Mirela remarks:
We seem to make a good team and I for one would like to continue 'elping the commander, but I do 'ave some personal items to take care of. So, do we split up and meet again at the Juggler in two days, or should we meet before then?
Oh and is someone going to pay the rest of Madam Zellara's Memorial? We should pay for that before we forget it.

If the group wishes to split up Mirela pulls Atticus aside before they go their own ways.

Atticus:

Professor, are you planning to go to check in on the children and Nikkodemus? If you do, can I go with you? I want to make sure they are being well taken care of.

If the group does split up, Mirela heads back to the Sailors Delight to spend a bit of time recovering and gives her mom and Aunt Zelendra 50 gp to make sure that all of the women/children there are well fed and taken care of during this time of chaos in the city.

Before splitting off

Devan thought about Mirela’s comment for a moment before nodding in agreement. These last few days had given him purpose beyond the self-destruction he had been seeking before Madame Zellara had pulled them together. ”I shall be staying at the Juggler, but i’d be happy to meet with any of you in the interim. Otherwise, i’ll see you in two days.” His eyes had drifted to each of the others, but seemed to linger on the half-elf before he departed.

When you explain to Kroft about Meliya, she has a visible reaction to that name. "Meliya? Meliya Arkona? Our deserter was wrapped up with the Arkona family? Could that be? It might explain his actions more and put a more sinister twist on them perhaps....I wonder? Either way, you stopped him, and we can question him all we like before he faces punishment. Unless he is more helpful than I have heard so far, I don't see any mercy for Vancaskerkin or his men. As Mirela says, they deserted at our hour of greatest need, and I am not inclined to forgive. I am certain the Queen feels the same. Enjoy your rest, you deserve it. But return ready for more action. Your particular skills are needed in many places!"

She dismisses you from her chambers and excuses you for the next two days.

The Arkonas are well known as one of the ruling families of Korvosa, perhaps only second to House Jeggare in wealth. Their control on the Old Korvosa District, an island off the mainland, is iron-tight. It is a poorly kept secret that the family owns, controls, or allows nearly every criminal enterprise in the city.

The level of detail we spend on this downtime is entirely up to you. Just give a heads up when you are ready to return; otherwise, I will play out the strings as you bring them up.

It had been a long evening and after the party left Kroft's office Twilight stifled a yawn while nodding at Mirella "I agree, we seem to work well together and the company is agreeable. I just hope whatever Kroft has for us next isn't as foul as tonight.

I'll be heading back to the Juggler, I think I need a good long bath and a relaxing drink after today's events. Anyone who doesn't have a better place to stay is more than welcome to come along.

I can go to the Grey tomorrow and deliver the rest of what we owe if someone would like to accompany me. The streets are still dangerous and I don't fancy being accosted by imps on my own. Otherwise, I'll be at the inn if anyone needs me. I have a lot of studying to do to refresh my Acadamae teachings and would greatly welcome any distractions"

That evening Twilight sends her clothes to be washed and then relaxes in a warm bath with a bottle of wine trying to get rid of the smell of the butcher shop before retiring for the evening.

The next morning she performs her morning rites and submits a 20 gold tithe in a yellow silk pouch before taking another. As she does so she reflects on the sudden surge of wealth that was flowing through her hands. It didn't matter if it was due to fortunate chance or Calistria's favour since the two were one in the same. It was a sign that Calistria was pleased with Twilight's progress.

That afternoon she headed to the Gray district to pay her respects to Zellara and pay off the remainder of the party's debt.

Later that evening she spent some time studying and scribing another scroll. Having time to get a little more creative, in addition to her monogram and the symbol of Calistria she embellished this scroll with a kiss of yellow lipstick and tied it with a yellow silk ribbon.

To finish off the evening she caroused with the evening crowed, flirting with the patrons while seeing if anyone knew of Meliya or the Arkonas. diplomacy: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (2) + 5 = 7

Finally during the morning of the second day she woke up early to finish a third scroll before her morning prayers and meeting up with the party, taking the time to embellish this one as well.

I have Twilight's actions and expenditures during the down time recorded. Please let us know what spells you will have prepared for the second day (when you are down one divine spot) or if they have changed from before.

The Grey Wardens take the rest of the coin from Twilight for Zellara's final spot, showing her the small, simple monument and the plot. It was definitely small and tasteful, just the right thing for the Varisian fortune-teller who's presence might still be among her fellows inside the Harrow Deck.

Taking her leave, Twilight spent the day in pursuits that might have suited her before the recent adventures with Lamm and Vancaskerkin. Now she found herself craving that excitement, and while her resumed studies of the arcane occupied part of her mind, she found herself thinking more about what Cressida Kroft might have for her instead -- perhaps a mission for the Queen herself?

She spent the few days in study, both divine and arcane, and in flirtatious pursuits, designed to draw out information about the Arkona's, but that came to naught.

The Calistrian was nearly crawling out of her skin when the downtime was over, ready to head back to the Citadel to see what new surprises awaited.

"You again?" said the man behind the counter at the jewelry store that Devan stopped in first after leaving the Citadel. While the man had to admit, the stranger had a bit more going on than usual, he did look more sickly than morose, as if, after finally getting over the heartbreak of his lost love, he came down with a mortal illness. "The irony of it all," thought the jeweler almost poetically, which was very against his typically practical nature.

"You gonna do more than just stare at this time, fella? I'm gonna take care of these other customers. You can stand there as long as you need, until closing time that is." The man worked his way over to the few others who were in the small shop, mostly ignoring Devan, though keeping a close eye on him when time allowed. "Desperate men do desperate things sometimes", he thought more relieved as the pratical thoughts returned again.

The jeweler wondered why he ever let this heartsick vagrant in the shop in the first place, instead of calling the guard like he had a mind to. The man was here most every day, though he had been missing for a few now, and it had been clear that he was slowly wasting away through sheer heartbreak. Despite himself, the jeweler gave a silent little prayer to Abadar for his own wife and children "Gods protect me if I ever get so low," he thought again.

Atticus and Mirela headed off to the Heights after leaving the Citadel, intent on seeing the Nicky, Kester, and Kara, the children rescued fro the clutches of Gaedren Lamm. The duo quickly finds the Aquilla home and when they knock, they are pleased to see that Nicky, dressed in a fine gentleman's attire, answers the door with a warm smile. He hugs Atticus and gives a proper bow and handshake to Mirela and invites them inside.

There the family greets the heroes, inviting them to stay for dinner. It is clear that the adopted children have fit in well enough, though it does sound as if there are few rough edges. Kester was brought in by the constable for pick-pocketing small items in the nearby shops but avoided serious trouble. He has also been a bit of a difficult student under the new tutor, saying he'd rather spend his days on the streets than in the classroom.

Kara still has an occasional nightmare, but seems to be recovering from her young ordeal quite well. With her long blond hair brushed and in a fine gown, she makes nearly a picture-perfect image of a well-to-do lady, as if she were born to it.

After dinner, the family sees you to the door, saying goodbye. As you are ready to leave, Kester appears on the porch once more. He hugs each of you in his stand-offish way. "Thank you for taking us from Lamm." he says simply. "I thought we were going to die there, and while this place can be stifling and boring, it is so much better than life on the streets. You have changed our lives, Kara and I, so thank you!" Embarrassed, he then slips back inside the house as you depart.

After leaving the Aquilla's, Mirela headed back to Sailor's Delight, where she tells her aunties the stories of her adventures in great detail. "That Devan sounds like a handsome one!" says her Aunt Zelda, cackling with glee. "Ye should bring 'im round 'ere someday, and we'll give 'im somethin' t'sing 'bout. Won't we ladies?!?" The women all laugh, and Mirela realizes how much she miss the camaraderie here.

She leaves her 'mother' with a year's worth of coins to make sure all are well-taken care of, clothed and fed, and then turns in for the night, making sure to thank Erastil for all the simple comforts of home, even if that home is a place like the Delight.

Let us know what spells you prepare when you report for duty, and if you have other tasks to complete before returning.

Devan just flicked his dark eyes to the man before ignoring him and staring at the ring he had purchased not long ago (but it felt like a lifetime ago) for his lost love. He just stood there gazing at it as he had many a night. Those nights had typically ended with him moping off to drown his sorrows in some cheap swill he could barely stomach (and oft times didn't), but this time would be different.

The musician waited patiently as the jeweler helped the other customers in the shop, rarely taking his eyes off the ring, and only then to fiercely look at anyone who thought of approaching the beautiful band. When it appeared to be close to evening, Devan broke his gaze from the ring and locked eyes with the proprietor. "I'll need a silver length of chain to wear it 'round my neck. Sturdy, too, no flimsy links that'll break at the first bit of tugging."

Once the man had procured a chain and set the ring and necklace on the counter, the bard counted out the coins needed to purchase the items. Then, as he had weeks before, he reached down and picked up the ring, holding it with reverence before kissing the emerald. He looped the silver chain through the ring and clasped it about his neck, tucking the ring inside his shirt to rest against his chest. He offered the jeweler a simple wave, then strode out into the early evening air.

While things were not quite as raucous in Korvosa as they had been, there were still plenty of people on the streets. In good spirits, the slowly-recovering young man asked people about the goings-on in the City, always trying to shift the conversation to the Arkonas when it seemed to fit in organically.

Diplomacy (gather info): 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (11) + 10 = 21

After making it to the Juggler, the musician offered a tired welcome to the others in attendance, making time to sup and drink with them but otherwise spending alot of time in bed recuperating from the major illness that had almost laid him low.

The ring and chain costs Devan 200gp, but the effect is priceless...

Shortly before they are to proceed to the Citadel, Devan meets with the others in the private booth of the Juggler, still looking a little worn but in much better shape. Even more so, his attitude seemed to be much better, as well. His handsome face smiled naturally and often as he called to the servers for drinks, and his general demeanor seemed more light-hearted and free of the weight of the few previous weeks.

After they all gather, he passed along the knowledge he had gained on his way back from the jeweler's. "The Arkonas are a powerful noble family here in the city. Second only to Jeggare, perhaps, and they have the river named after them. The Arkonas more or less control the small island known as 'Old Korvosa', and have their little claws in about every conceivable criminal enterprise in Korvosa. So whatever they were up to with Vancaskerkin is certainly not on the up and up. Wonder what we're getting dragged into this time!?" The young man seemed eager to get started, a stark contrast to just a few days earlier, when he was just as eager to be finished.

Just before the party is to start on its way, the musician has a thought, mainly tied to the large quantity of gold weighing down his pouch. "I'll be back in time to go with you guys to the Citadel. Otherwise, I'll meet you there! Got some purchases to make!"

Going to purchase a MW Rapier (310 after the 10 trade-in credit for the old one, I believe), and am definitely willing to throw in 150 gp for a wand of CLW, if the rest of the group is agreeable.

On her way back from the Grey district, Twilight stops in at Alexi's Alchemicals.

When she arrives Alexi is busy with another customer. While she waits she heads over to Tasha's Thaumaturlurgicals and has a short chat with the proprietor. Once she sees the other customer leave the shop she bids Tasha a good day.

When she enters the shop Alexi smiles "Ah, you are back. I trust the troll styptic was satisfactory for your purposes. What can I get for you today?"

"The styptic worked wonderfully," she replied. "Thank you for the suggestion. As for today, I was hoping that you might have something to bolster one's health against venoms and diseases. A friend of mine had a most unfortunate encounter with spiders of unusual size, and if that weren't enough he managed to pick up some kind of malady during the same misadventure."

Alexi nodded somberly "Hmm, I see. I do have something in stock that would help, though they are a bit pricey they should serve your purposes."

Alexi goes behind the counter and pulls a pair of vials from beneath it. Each of the glass vials has a neatly lettered label on it. He places them on the counter for Twilight to inspect. "This one is an antitoxin, if taken before exposure to a toxin it should help to neutralize it before you are harmed. If taken after exposure it will help limit the toxin's spread.

This is an antiplague. Its very similar to the antitoxin, if you take it before being exposed it will help you avoid contracting the illness. If taken afterwards it will bolster your constitution and help you recover sooner.

I trust these were what you were looking for."

Twilight nodded "These are exactly what I was looking for, thank you. I'll also take one of those tanglefoot bags" she pointed to a shelf with a collection of lumpy leather sacks " and a couple of sunrods as well."

Twilight paid for her purchases and bid Alexi a good day.

Just before she gets back to the Yellow Juggler she has a thought and ducks into a tailor shop. There she purchases several different sets of peasant clothes to give herself a wider selection of outfits to choose from for disguises.

While perusing some of the more expensive offerings she also comes across and eye catching outfit that strikes her fancy.

Purchasing antitoxin (50gp), antivenom (50gp), tanglefoot bag (50gp), 2 sunrods (4 gp), a variety of peasant outfits (1 gp), and a courtisan's outfit (8 gp) for a total of 163 gp spent. Unless you are really looking forward to Miss Twilight or me poking you with our wand?

She looks back at Devan with a straight face and raised eyebrow.

Mirela will pay in for the wand if the rest of the party wants to do it, but abstains from any vote on if it's needed.

Will wait to hear from Atticus and Nargun about the wand before making the deductions.

At the appointed hour, all of you have arrived again at Citadel Volshyenek, and wait outside the office of your newest employer Field Marshal Cressida Kroft. As you sit, you see a detail of guardsmen building what appears to be a gallows in the yard, it looks big enough for 4 or 5 to hang separately...

While waiting you overhear a pair of lesser officers mention something interesting. "I heard the Queen wasn't behind it after all, but the King had some young artist on the side, and she was the one that murdered him. Heard it from my cousin who is in the Palace Guard." But before you can ask the lieutenant about that, the door to Kroft's office opens, and she shows you in to the now familiar office.

Little has changed her, but you are all surprised to see someone else already sitting in one of the easy chairs as you enter. The man rises and bows. "This is my old friend Vencarlo Orsini. He may have some color to add to the mission I have for you, which is most sensitive. Despite Carlo's outspoken criticism of the Queen and government, I value him as a friend and advisor."

The man, who is handsome and moves with natural grace and ease, wearing finely tailored clothes and vest. A fine rapier with a jeweled hilt rests at this hip. He steps forward to kiss the hand of Twilight and Mirela, while shaking firmly wit the others in the group.

Know Local DC 15:
You have heard of Orsini before. He is Korvosa's most respected and renowned teachers of the honorable art of fencing and swordplay. He does only have 5 fingers on either hand...

"It is my pleasure to make your acquaintance. Cressida has told me of your work on her prior project and of perhaps another deed you did for Korvosa before that..." He winks at Mirela, a smile playing around the corner of his mouth. He holds out a chair for the priestess to sit, and offers another to Twilight, choosing to stand as Croft takes her place behind the desk. "If Korvosa had more fine folk like you, we'd already be out of this mess."

"Yes, well as much as I would like to continue this conversation," says the Marshal, getting down to business. I fear we don't have the time. Vencarlo has learned something that could degrade into sanctions, embargoes, or even war against Cheliax if we don't act now. This problem is a man named Darvayne Gios Amprei, an ambassador from Cheliax whose disdain for Korvosa is well documented, though he takes great pleasure in what our city has to offer. Even before this recent unrest, this man was ready to recommend to his government a sanction on trade, or perhaps even an embargo. Vencarlo has learned through his own considerable sources that Ambassador Amprei's actual goals are t undermine Korvosa's economy to the point where he can buy up large tracts of the city from desperate landholders. He plans to establish himself in a position of power here before advising the end of the sanctions with his allies in Cheliax. We can't let his bias or personal plans hurt Korvosa. Yet neither can we take drastic action -- not only would killing him be wrong, it'd simply martyr him in Cheliax's eyes."

"Fortunately, the ambassador has his foibles. Again, Vencarlo has learned that Ambassador Amprei has been making fairly regular visits to a place in Old Korvosa called Eel's End. This den of vice is run by a dangerous man named Devargo Barvasi, better known in Korvosa's alleys as The King of Spiders. I'd love to put Devargo out of business, but he pays his vice taxes regularly and never causes any problems -- in fact, since he keeps his business constrained entirely within the five ships moored at Eel's End, he actually the least of my worries. Truth be told, I can't decide whether Devargo is a stirge or a kraken. He seems like a bloodsucking pest most days, but sometimes I fear just how far his tentacles have wormed their way into our great city. In this case though, his insidious web stretching across Korvosa's underworld might be to our advantage."

"Devargo would never let someone he recognizes as an ally of the Guard into Eel's End, but your group's a different case. I'd like you to pay a visit to Eel's End and secure an audience with Devargo. Find out what he knows about Amprei, get proof of any illict goings-on the ambassador might be involved with, and bring that proof to me. I can use it to undermine any forthcoming attempts by him to get Cheliax to cut us off. Devargo might not be willing to part with his information easily. I'll supply you with some gold to bribe him, and whatever's left over you can keep for yourself. Remember: Devargo is dangerous, but so are you -- if things get violent, I wouldn't mourn his passing..."

Kroft hands you a leather satchel filled with 1000 gold crowns, funds for bribing Devargo Barvasi.

"It is a fortunate coincidence," says Orsini, who nodded respectfully when Kroft mentioned his name during her briefing. "I am headed to my academy in Old Korvosa now anyway. If I could accompany these lovely ladies, and their escorts, of course, I would be pleased to show you Eel's End, when you are ready."

Before

Devan's brow arched at the Erastilan's comment, smirk in place. "Is that so? And how about you?" The musician chuckled, listening further.

He thought about Mirela's points and looked pensive, thinking she made a fine argument. Still, it seemed others were on board with the decision, and maybe better safe than sorry was the appropriate mantra to use.

The young man laughed at the redhead's question, but abstained from the crude comment he had been planning to make back. Instead he just grinned at Mirela, even more amused at her 'stern' expression.

Devan looked impassively at the gallows being constructed in the yard of the Citadel, shrugging internally. All those men, including Vancaskerkin, had made their choices knowing that this was the likely penalty. As he hears the young officers speaking of the King's murder, he turned to ask them about the subject but was interrupted by Kroft as she opened the door and beckoned them in.

The bard smiled at the man introduced as Vencarlo, stepping forward to shake his hand after the man had performed his courtesies for the ladies. The young man had a twinkle in his eye as Orisini pulled out chairs for Mirela and Twilight and seemed the picture of a perfect gentleman, but turned his attention to Kroft as she started to speak, taking a seat in an unoccupied chair.

Devan listened intently as the Marshal explained what was going on. He had to admit, the Ambassador had a fairly clever ploy developed. The young man hoped they would be able to find enough dirt on him to gain his cooperation. Seemed like a fairly despicable den of vice they would be walking into. Sounded like loads of fun. The musician gave a quick nod at the end to indicate his understanding of Kroft's comment about the future of the King of Spiders.

Devan looked to his companions, hoping they were all ready to go, as it seemed this Orisini was. A quick look around Eel's End would certainly be helpful in getting ready to try...whatever it was they were going to do. He rose from his seat and stood ready at the door as the others started to rise and file out, waving to Kroft before exiting.

Back at the inn...

"While I am enjoying this discussion about poking people with wands, I do have a little something to help alleviate concerns about healing."

Twilight pulls out the two scrolls she had been working on.

"This one is for you Mirella, use it as you see fit. As for the other, Atticus, did you have any studies with professor Diederek on unlocking magical potential stored in items? Would you be able to use this other scroll?

Giving one scroll to Mirella and if he can use it via UMD, one scroll to Atticus. Cure light wounds CL1
...
As the group passes the courtyard Twilight causally glances over at the gallows and mutters "They are getting off easy. I would have tossed them in a pit with water and one knife and told them to remember that "meat all looks the same on the inside" as one of their own crew so eloquently put it."
...
Inside the office Twilight smiles appreciatively as Vencarlo takes her hand and offers her a seat. "Thank you Mr. Orsini" she says after taking the offered seat. As Kroft is explaining the situation, Twilight silently flirts a bit with Vencarlo and sees if he responds.

Despite the flirting, Twilight finds the situation Kroft describes fascinating. "I get to rub elbows, and maybe a bit more later on, with a handsome and well connected man, and I get to experience and learn about high level intrigue as well as low level corruption all in one go. This is an incredible opportunity that is going to make even some of the senior sisters jealous. Working with the Guard has absolutely been and invaluable experience."

"So, how do we want to go about this? Walk in as is or go in under cover to have a look around first?"

Devan smiled at the half-elf's work ethic...she didn't seem to let a minute slip by that wasn't productive. If Atticus refused the scroll, Devan would hold his hand out for it, being the resident keeper of unwanted healing items.

--------------------------

The young man just glanced back at Twilight as she made her comment, not really able to fault the logic of her statement. What would drive men to commit such acts of cruelty against their fellows Devan would likely never understand. Even for all that Lamm had done to wrong the musician Devan wouldn't have resorted to such acts.

--------------------------

Devan mulled over Twilight's question for a while as they walked. If they just all walked in, they at least had their numbers and prowess against whatever thugs might be present if things turned ugly. On the flip side, Nargun's comment more or less made the point of the problem with that approach.

Still, it was hard to know how to deal with criminal folks...sometimes brute force and intimidation were almost appreciated, whereas at other times they were met with equally deadly force as the other party tried to prevent a loss of face and power.

The musician finally just shrugged. "It's a criminal establishment that caters to such as the Ambassador, so I'm sure they have upscale and downtrodden clients. Let's just all go take a look and see what's to be seen. Just remember, these activities are not necessarily smiled upon by the Guard, but they are legal as long as the vice taxes are paid, so mind your tongue.

He glanced at their escort, almost forgetting the man was there when he was thinking. "Mr. Orisini, any suggestions? You seem to know at least something about all this. Which approach would you opt for?" The young man's brown eyes focused on the older man, wondering how the old dandy knew Kroft. Vencarlo certainly seemed light on his step, like a dancer. Looking at the fine weapon at the man's hip and his equally classy clothing, Devan thought he was maybe an aristocrat of some sort.

"Well, since we don't want to be associated with the Guard, we could go in under the guise of representatives of interested parties that wish to remain anonymous who are concerned about the trade implications of Amprei's actions and would like to know more about his personal activities. You know, just so that our employers have a better understanding of the man they are dealing with which may help them in presenting more compelling offers in upcoming negotiations.

If we just wanted to look around first it would be simple enough to go in as patrons. Two affluent gentlemen with their escorts looking for an evening of shady entertainment. Of course it isn't unheard of that affluent individuals prefer to have a personal bodyguard on hand.

If Twilight, Devan, and Nargun have voted for, and Mirela is abstaining, then it sounds like Atticus' vote doesn't change the outcome. It will be a simple enough feat for Orsini to stop you at a place where a wand can be obtained on the way to Eel's End. Each player ponies up 150gp for their share. Who carries it? Might make a difference on what spells Mirela and Twilight prepare as well. Make sure those are updated for the day today.

Or do we need to follow the law for everyone outside of Davargo's organization?

Croft cocks her head to the side thinking about that for a moment. "Use your judgement. I am looking for the greater good here. If Barvasi wants you to do some minor acts to get the dirt on Amprei, I am fine with that. If he wants you to storm the castle, murder the Queen, and set up him as king of Korvosa, well then that probably wouldn't be ok, would it? I guess what I'm trying to say is, we will look the other way if minor indiscretions occur during your mission. Part of why we need you to complete this for us, instead of sending a regiment of Guard in there..."

Orsini nods his agreement. "Can't make an omelette without breaking some eggs, lady. You may have to get your lovely hands a bit dirty but you understand its all for the greater good. It sounds like your group is realistic like that -- the way you dealt with a certain crime boss for example?" He says all this with a knowing smile and wink, it may be a threat, but its so couched in charm as to be hard to distinguish.

Orsini listens to your conversation and replies: "There is little happening at Eel's End during daylight hours. If you wish to scout the place, it is wiser to go at night, when the place will be at full tilt. Weapons and armor are not barriers to entry here. Only thsoe who show the badge of some official enforcement agency: the Guard, the Sable Company, or the Hellknights, are unwelcome on the pier."

"Eel's End is the on the southernmost pier of Old Korvosa, along the Jeggare. There usually 4-5 ships moored to the pier, each catering to a different vice or pleasure. The main ship there is the Eel's End -- the name of a ship and the pier. That is where Devargo has his throne and office. There are a number of enforcers, bouncers and bully boys, that he uses to keep order and muscle those who owe him money and the like. A direct approach would require a fight, and a tough one." He looks the group over, admiring the ladies, and sizing up the fellows. "Not sure you have the muscle to win that fight, even with the mad dwarf there. But who knows? I think a subtle approach is called for. If you can't purloin the information, then getting an audience with Barvasi and negotiating for it with the Field Marshal's money seems the right approach." he shrugs. "In my younger days, I might have joined you, but I am bit to old and slow now." he says wistfully.

He does offer a few words to each of you in private or low tones as you make your way to the bridge to Old Korvosa.

Twilight:
He is quite appreciative of your flirting and in a charming way engages you back. "How did a lovely lady like yourself get mixed up in all this madness? Seems I would keep you at home and safe if you belonged to me." he is obviously flirtatious and complimentary all at once. A smooth operator.

Devan:
"How fare you with that blade, young man? It is a finesse weapon you hold and few are its master. Are you proficient with it? I am a master swordsman instructor myself, and might take a turn with you in the yard, if you like? I have trained some of the most famous fighters in all Korvosa, and would invest the time with you should you wish it. You seem a brave sort, but I wonder if you have the skill and dedication to back it up?"

Mirela:
"If all the priests of Erastil were as fair as you, my dear, perhaps I would consider my faith more carefully! AFter this affair is ended, perhaps you can offer me some personal instruction about Old Deadeye, eh?" He is not inappropriate,
but very smooth and charming.

Nargun:
Orsini walks along with you, and says "My friend, I admire your strength and bravery, but udnerstand that some things require great finesse, rather than force. When you can manage both, you will be fearsome to behold."

Atticus:
"I see you are a master of letters. I never was much of a student in that regard, but a master of other skills instead. Take good care of these others, professor. The city needs more like them, and I see great things in the future for all of you!"

All in all, you get the picture of Orsini as a charming gentleman, who is well connected and proud. His swagger seems to be backed-up by his ability with the blade, but he may be aging past his prime in that respect. He is subtle, gracious, and charming in his conversation, and obviosly keen on the best outcome for Korvosa.

Devan listened to Orisini's advice and nodded, he had assumed the night life would be much more vibrant than the day time hours. Now they had a decision to make...violence, subterfuge, or just going in and asking for an audience with the King of Spiders. While Devan was pretty skilled at sneaking about, and could talk his way out of a lot of things, he'd probably have to do such a thing alone, which didn't strike his fancy at all. Which meant stealing the assets they were looking for was out of the question. Hell, they didn't even know what Barvasi might have on the Ambassador!

So, it was down to either talking to Barvasa directly, or trying to bull their way in and force the issue. A well-connected crimelord on his home turf would be a tough fight, as Vencarlo had said. Lamm had been ancient and his retainers hadn't exactly been the cream of the crop and that fight hadn't been too easy. "Just asking for an audience with Devargo seems like the wisest approach. Especially since we're equipped with a nice payment for whatever he might offer. We can always fight if things turn sour."

As Orisini came closer to him and spoke away from the others, Devan listened with interest, understanding the reason the man moved like a dancer. If he was a master swordsman, surely he would have the fancy footwork to back it up. As the man asked his questions and made his offer, the young man replied.

Vencarlo Orisini:

"I'm still recovering from a bout of sickness, honestly, but even at my best I wouldn't say I'm a master. Though in truth I am faring much better with this rapier than the longsword I picked up a few days ago. I guess the natural grace I have translates better to a lighter weapon. The young man smiled at the aging swordmaster. "That is a generous offer, sir, and I will gladly take you up on it. I might not be a large sort, but I don't give up." Not again, at any rate.

Devan nodded his head firmly in agreement with Vencarlo, fully intending to do just that. He had his own skill set he could contribute to the group, but being able to hold his own in a fight would certainly be helpful. Resolved, the musician gave the older man a slight smile as Orsini moved on to talk with one of the others. As they approached their destination, the young man's brow furrowed as he asked, "Vencarlo, what do you think about the rumor that a young artist was responsible for the King's death?"

After Orsini had left for his home, Devan turned to the others as they tried to decide on the best approach. "I don't mind walking about and seeing what there is to see. I think if we poke around too much we might irritate Devargo and make his price go up, but there's little downside to it otherwise." The slight man shrugged in indifference, impatient for dusk to fall and things to progress. One thing he'd never been good at was waiting.

Orsini laughs at Twilight response. "Maybe you are right, and maybe you are not. I would still like to try it, given the opportunity. I would be quite pleased to share a bottle of wine when you are free from your duties with the guard. It would be my distinct pleasure."

As Devan asks about the murder of the king, Orsini frowns with a troubled look on this face for perhaps the first time since you have met him. "I think Cressida warned you about my politics, but since you asked...No, I don't think a young artist murdered the King. Even if she is as lovely as they say, I think the king was decrepit enough that there was nothing going on there. I believe our noble Queen has come up with scapegoat to deflect the blame from herself or those around her. Not that I have any love lost for dear old Eodred -- a man who sat far above a city and enriched himself at the expense of his people. I am certain Ileosa is no better. In my own opinion, the people should be choosing their ruler rather than relying on bloodlines or marriage. I hear there are places in this world that select their rulers in such a fashion. The people, young man. That is were the power in Korvosa really lies." He shakes his head to clear it. "Enough about that for now. We approach Old Korvosa. Be wary, this district is not as safe as it once was, thanks to the Arkonas and the negligence of the Crimson Throne."

You are in fact at the end of the mainland. Dozens of small bridges connect Northgate with Old Korvosa, crossing the small channel known as The Narrows. The exploding and expansive slums of Bridgefront stand before you, stacked one on top of the other as they are. The Shingles they have come to be called, as space in teh city filled, tenements were added to all kinds of unsafe and unsanitary ways on top, leading to a subculture of poor who may never actually walk the streets, but always live above in the network of The Shingles.

"Eel's End is to your right. Along the Narrows where it joins the Jeggare. My destination is on Garrison Hill at the north end of Old Korvosa, so this is where we part. If you plan to wait until nightfall to approach the pier, which I would advise, there is a fine inn here on the Northpoint side called The Laughing Wave. The places in Old Korvosa are much shadier and rougher than you might like today. Across the bridge, you will find the old Temple of Aroden. If you mention my name there and ask for Friar Finn, he will provide you the healing wand you seek for the right price. Be brave, stalwarts of Korvosa, and keep the city safe. Cressida and I are counting on you. Until we meet again!"

He again bends to kiss the hands of the ladies, and shakes with the gentlemen in his charming manner. He then strolls off, his gait easy and graceful, crossing The Narrows into the rambling wreck of the Shingles

This picture, looking across The Narrows at The Shingles of Old Korvosa gives some idea what you are looking at. I also updated the Korvosa Map linked at top margin with locations in Old Korvosa.

So how do you want to plan that? Should we all try to enter this den of vices? All at the same time? in small groups? Where should we put our weapons and armor? What if we need them?

"It sounded like weapons won't be a problem, the crowd is expected to have a rough edge about them. We should be fine. Lets go check out this church of Abadar, I'm curious how worshippers of a dead god manage to craft divine items."

Devan listened to the words of Orsini as he spoke his opinion on the matter, trying to reconcile that with the image of the grieving queen from just a few nights' past. He supposed both could be right...people were more shades of grey than black and white. Even an egomaniacal ruler could be sad about their spouse's death. Still, as Vencarlo moved on to the people, here was something the bard could agree with! Masses of people could be swayed by the honey-tongued, but better that possibility than a line of despots only concerned with their own lot in life.

The musician noted the reference to the Arkonas with caution, suddenly aware of the fact that they are about to enter the noble family's home turf after disrupting one of their politically-conniving operations. He again wondered what the intent had been behind All The World's Meat, but soon put it out of his mind once more. He shook hands with the charming man with a smile, giving a short wave as Orsini walked smoothly across the bridge.

Turning back to the group, he listened to Nargun and Twilight before adding his own thoughts. "Going as is should be ok. They probably take all kinds there, as long as you don't make a fuss. We should stick together, though, in case things get dicey." He chuckled at the half-elf's comment, starting off if the others are ready. "Perhaps they are relics from an earlier day?"

Ready to move on to Eel's End, unless anyone else wants to RP out the CLW Wand purchase or talk at the Inn.

Looking at Twilight Atticus can´t help but smirk.
"Dear Twilight, I think you mean the church of Aroden. I remeber that you had some ... minor problems remebering names, and dates. But then the patterns behind events, you were almost always spot on!"
Nodding at Devan´s words the scholar nods."Indeed a most sensible plan. The shingles can be quite dangerous. Keeping together is sensible! And weapons, especially in those days should deter some of the local wildlife"

With Vencarlos:

Mirela smiles the smallest of smiles at the comment and replies lightly:
I think you may need to get your eyes checked. If it is fair you are looking for; Miss Twilight and many of her sisters fill that desire far better then I. But thank you, and of course, I would be ‘appy to talk with you later. ‘Elping any who wish spiritual clarity do be one of the things I always enjoyed doing.

Later when the topic of Politics comes up:
I don’t know that the rule if the people would be any better then the rule of a monarch. People can be ignorant, swayed easily by a fast talker and bought for the price of meat in their belly. They also often ‘ave views that ‘old some as better then others. If people were given the power to set those views in law, is that not worse then an uncaring monarch?

And a King or Queen need not be bad. Look at Aroden. Before ‘e became a God ‘e was a great man who made a city based on fairness and opened to all people. If you ‘ave a great Queen can you not do wonderful things? Can we not ‘ope our new queen rises up to become a great leader?

When discussing how to get in:
I like Twilight’s suggestion of being a couple with some body guards. I would be happy to play the role of the ladies security guard. It would get us in without a lot of questions.

The bard laughed at Atticus’ comment, nodding in agreement. In a place like this, a lack of weaponry marked you as prey, usually.

With a grin Devan spoke, ”Actually she suggested two couples, with a burly dwarf bodyguard. I don’t think Atticus or I much look like hired muscle, though from the way he swings his morningstar I suspect he could look the part if we dressed him up as such. You ladies just have to decide which arm to cling to.” The musician chuckled as they made their way to the first stop, calm on the outside but inwardly excited about the prospect of tonight’s events.
