Devan smiled warmly as he received the instrument back carefully, placing it by his side as he nodded in agreement at her observation. "True...though my family was always more versed in music, we'd make poor Varisians if we didn't know at least a few tales. I'd be happy to share them with you later." Seeing as how you could be singular or plural, the bard left it at that.

The musician pondered his next move carefully as he saw the trap Twilight was setting with her geese, able to understand what she was doing but not knowing if he'd be skilled enough to slip the noose as he made his move. As the Calistrian explained her state of mind after this Winnin's murder, Devan listened sympathetically. He certainly could understand a lack of care for the rules while in that frame of mind.

When the half-elf mentioned her obsession with necromancy after her lover's death, Devan wondered if she had been researching how to bring him back from the grave, but it was surely too indecent to ask such a thing. He just smiled, his wan features showing more shadow than usual due to the dark circles under his eyes as he said, "Lamm stole much from all of us, but Madame Zellara and Korvosa herself drew us together through him. Fate has a strange and even cruel way of working things out, does She not?"

So do we go in the back door past all the animals or try to go in the front?

There are a lot of townsfolk around during the day, but with the curfew the shop should be empty of by-standers at night.
‘Owever the curfew will make getting there ‘ard less we go early and maybe ‘ide in the tenement till dark.

Devan listened as the other group shared their intelligence before he thought it over, listening to Mirela's words. "If the animals didn't seem to mind the Professor being back there, I say we go in the back way. They probably have someone guarding the front. And hiding in the abandoned building until dark sounds like a good plan, Mirela."

The musician spoke with an enthusiasm he did not feel, his body screaming at him to get some rest and recover. However, this strange situation needed sorting out, and Devan was genuinely curious as to this Verik's motives.

I don't believe this soldier is acting out of philantropic urges. I don't know why. Maybe because he's surrounding himself with bullies, maybe because I don't trust anyone. Probably because he's still a butcher at heart, killin" for a livin".

"Equating soldiers with butchers? That was an unexpectedly harsh comparison, I wonder where that came from."

"To be fair, Malder seemed like a decent guy. Even he seemed unimpressed with Baldrago's behaviour. However, I concede that looks can be deceiving. Speaking of which" Twilight presents the package she got at the shop to Mirela and Atticus "Is there anything unusual about this cut of meat? Either its quality or its source? Malder made a cryptic remark about some of their product, though I expect that you will find nothing unusual about this."

She wraps up the game as they examine the meat.

After they examine it Twilight says "I agree, we should go in at night. It wouldn't do to have a crowd of hungry onlookers see us if we need to close down the place where they were hoping to get their next meal."

Mirela examines the meat.

Detect magic and a Heal check???? I’m thinking Heal as that seems to cover medical/anatomy knowlege as well as poision and disease. But if you want a different skill let me know.
Heal: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (12) + 6 = 18

Heal is just as good as any. Guess I would've taken any cook or butcher skill or Know Nature, or even Perception, I suppose.

The meat looks normal enough, well-marbled and still in prime condition. If there is something wrong with the portion provided, it is not immediately evident.

With enough effort, the professor is able to force the lock on the abandoned tenement building next to All the World's Meat, and the intrepid heroes takes turns watching the place all afternoon, but nothing unusual occurs as the sun moves to the western sky.

As night begins to fall, the city grows restless again. If there is a curfew, it's not evident in this section of the city as the pops and lights of magical power, screams and shouts of angry citizens, and the sounds of shattering glass fill the air, though thankfully, none are immediately nearby.

Once full dark has set in, the group sets forth for the butchery. The back gate remains unlocked, and so entry is rather easy.

Darkness is fine to move about, but you'll have the same issues as entering the Fishery. How do you illuminate the area so you can see to operate? Once at the back gate, what then?

As the group settled in to the abandoned building and started to survey the butcher shop Twilight quickly became bored. She poked around the building a bit and suddenly had an idea. She intoned a quick little spell and the dust was magically blown from the top of a crate. "Prestidigitation is such a handy little cantrip, why did I ever give up casting it?".

With a clean makeshift desk to sit at she took out the materials that she had bought earlier and began her preparations. While it wasn't a perfect environment the windows let in enough light to work by and the place was quiet and free from distractions.

She took out the feathers and carefully cut one in a way that it could be used as a dropper, then used it to carefully measure out the various reagents into the pot of ink. The Urist gum would be a binder to help mix the components with the ink while the troll styptic would provide the sympathetic reagent that would bind the healing magic. A pinch of silver dust to help conduct the magic into the ink and the easy part was done.

Next she took another two feathers and meticulously cut them into fine quills before she began. It had been a long time since she had done this so she took a little extra time to make sure it was done right. She inscribed each letter on the vellum in painstaking detail, any mistake would ruin the whole project. Unlike an arcane spell which would require esoteric words and diagrams to hold the magic, this one was a simple prayer to Callistria.

As the time wore on her fingers started to hurt and her eyes ached but the writings finally took shape, the black ink on the page had a slight sparkle from the silver dust. With the last letter penned she took a moment to add a little cosmetic flourish, a symbol of Callistria in the lower right corner of the page. In the Acadamae it was customary for wizards to leave their personal marks on any items they crafted, but in this case it was Callistria's magic that would imbue the scroll and Twilight thought it was more important to recognize that than the author who penned the page.

With the writing complete, the last thing to do was to imbue the words. Twilight undid one of the spells she had prepared in the morning and gently directed the flow of divine power into the scroll. The letters on the page began to glow with a yellow radiance as they took up the magic. It only took a few moments but as the glow faded Twilight was immensely satisfied to see that the magic held true.

She carefully rolled up the vellum, a little disappointed that she didn't have time to get the yellow silk ribbon she had wanted to bind the scroll with and with a look of pride presented it to Devan. "This is for you, a spell of healing to help if Mirella or I are unable to.".

Scroll of cure light CL 1. DC to craft was 5+1=6 and I have a spellcraft of 8.
Oh, and I figured survival might have also been applicable for the meat testing skill.

Mirela looks out the boarded up window of the tenement out over the city. For a while she stands watching the lights pop like fireworks in that gathering gloom.

Finally she turns away and says to no one in particular.
I don't get it. What 'as the queen done to make people so mad that they are willing to throw away their lives to protest her ascension?
And just randomly attacking places of power.
It makes no sense.
Like the church of Abadar. What does that church have to do with the king's demise? Why attack the church?

Sure the priests are a bit snobbish, but they do 'elp the poor and keep order. 'Ow does attacking the bank do anything to 'elp?

As the group walked to the abandoned tenement, the musician thought about how they would assail the butchery later on. After the near snafu with lighting several days earlier at the fishery, Devan tried to think of a source of illumination that would not instantly give them away. Thinking he would take a look around, he waved the others on. "Go ahead, I'll catch up with you shortly."

A short time later, the bard arrived and let himself into the party's hidey hole with his new purchase, a bullet lantern. He handed the lantern and a couple of flasks of oil to Nargun, shrugging. "It's not perfect, but it will at least focus the light."

Bullet Lantern and 2 flasks of oil are 12.2 gp

As they all settled in to wait, Devan watched the Calistrian settle in and start to write something, watching the flowing movements of her hands on the parchment before he lost interest and closed his eyes, nodding off. When his eyes opened, the sky was darkening outside and the bard felt somewhat better than before. The musician looked curiously at Twilight as she handed him the scroll, "Ummm, ok." He still smiled at her anyway, noting the look of artful pride on her face as he accepted the scroll.

As Mirela started to question the mindset of the inhabitants of Korvosa, the young man shrugged. "Who can truly know why people do what they do? All they see is a very young woman, a young woman of foreign birth, who ascended after her husband died mysteriously. People love to hate those in better places than themselves. Same for the Church of Abadar. It espouses order, and therefore likes things consistent...therefore it has a vested interest in keeping the status quo. The status quo is the Queen, who is an object of hate, so the Church becomes a surrogate for the peoples' wrath. A few people, anyway. Most of them are only rioting because their brother's wife's cousin is rioting. Once the guard rounds up the ringleaders it'll be back to business as usual."

Once the proper time arrived, the musician stood up, gathering his small amount of equipment with a grin on his face. "We ready, then? Up for a night of breaking and entering, Professor?"

Noted the new scroll of CLW and Devan's purchases. The cash page has been debited for the 12.2gp

Mirela puts her buckler on her arm and draws her bow.
We are going to be sneaking in anyway so no use ‘iding our intentions.

Then she follows the others down and makes herself ready to assault the shop.

There are a pair of curtained windows on the upper floor of the butcher's shop, and there does appear to be a candle burning up there, though it doesn't seem to have moved since you started watching.

There are no windows on the ground floor, however, except the large glass display window at front, and you are on the wrong side to see that at present. Your vantage point doesn't give a good view of the front of the shop, but no one saw anyone leave out the back.

As stated before, the back gate remains unlocked after Atticus' handiwork earlier in the day, and with the soft light of Devan's lantern acting as illumination, you move to that point.

Noted the casting of Mage Armor by Twilight. I will place you all on the map near the back gate, and you may post and move out of rounds until otherwise stated. I will assume you are using Perception so you don't have to roll each time unless prompted. Anything else? If not, creep away. You will need to make Stealth rolls as you move (or take 10) if you choose the sneaky route, rather than a direct assault.

Devan crept along with Twilight towards the back of the butchery, stooping over so as to keep a lower profile. Unfortunately, his recent illness made him more clumsy than normal, so he made much more noise than intended.

The musician eyed the back door critically, looking for any traps or other surprises that might alert those inside of their passage.

If he found nothing, he would step back to allow Nargun up front, ready to proceed inside.

Ha, funny you should mention that...

Devan hears the muttering of voices beyond the door as well as the occasional thunk and stirring of someone working inside, obviously without regard to being quiet. It sounds as if there are at least two voices. There are a few snatches of conversation clearly heard above the noise and through the door.

"...the least the sergeant knows about it the better. He's too distracted to care anyways..."

"...made a pretty penny on that job. Can't say when the next one's gonna be but hopefully..."

"...working in a butcher shop, I woulda stayed in..."

The musician stepped back from the door, waving everyone over for a quick huddle.

"Sounds like two men working in there, maybe more. The Sergeant isn't one of them, since they mentioned something going on that he apparently doesn't know about. Something about him being distracted, as well...there's a little side work going on, it seems. This butcher's shop is definitely at least partially a front."

Once he had explained everything, he would get back into position, drawing his rapier as he prepared to enter the butchery.

Devan gave Twilight a brief nod of understanding and agreement before getting ready. He held his hand up to motion Nargun back for a second to see if Twilight can get the door open easily and quietly. Those inside seemed pretty intent on what they were doing, and maybe the group could get the drop on them.

When Twilight tests the door, she finds it unlocked. Pushing it open gently, the group is flooded with light from the well-lit room. The floor of this grim chamber is strewn with blood-stained straw, and the reek of slaughter is almost overpowering. The room is a killing floor. Meat hooks dangle from a metal track affixed to the ceiling that allows the hooks and their gory loads to be moved easily around the room. In the northwest corner, a large hammer sits on the floor and amid a permanent bloodstain. To the south, a bloodstained grille covers a wide hole in the floor. Just north of the grill site two large vats of water, one boiling and one cold. Two large butcher blocks stand to the east next to barrels of salt, and in the southeast corner sits a reeking vat of cast-off meat and bones.

Two men are hard at work in this room, and don't seem to notice the door slip open, so far. One man is standing on the eastern side at the butcher's block slicing strips of meat off a large bloody mass. His back is to the door at present. He is a broad-shouldered fellow with big sideburns, wearing a black leather apron. The other man is submerging a carcass in the boiling liquid, intently watching his work. His is sallow thin-looking fellow wearing thick gloves to protect his hands from the boiling water.

Sorry about the double-post earlier today, not sure how that happened...

The Killing Floor - Round 1 - continued

Mirela's shot through the crowd at the door is well-intentioned, but the obstructions make it very difficult and the arrow whizzes past the man startling him, but causing no damage.

Twilight has some time yet to make her post. Then we'll see what the boys have in store for you...

Twilight is lost in thought for a couple of moments, conflicted. Although what the men said was suspicious, implying that there was something else going on, she still wasn't certain that she wanted to shut down the operation. If only she could have a couple of words with the sergeant maybe they could work out some kind of arrangement.

Devan's step forward and announcement to the men inside snapped her out of her reverie, it appeared that the decision had been made for her.

"By Calistrias' barbed words, of course he had to stride all the way into the room instead of just taking a step through the door. Now I can't reach him without going in myself."

Twilight took out her holy symbol and whispered "Calistria, ward this man from harm"

Why does he acts like a brainless fool, putting himself in front of danger? That's my role!

says Nargun, with some grim humor, before moving toward the future fight

The Killing Floor - Round 1 - continued

As Devan calls out the surprised men and steps into the room, Twilight curses softly under her breath. Trying to help protect the fool, she whispers a soft prayer asking her patron to ward the man for the moment.

With a startled look over his shoulder, the sallow looking man rushes to the corner of the room, where a bow and blade lean against the wall. He bends down and scoops up the bow and quiver of arrows, turning to face the intruders.

Nargun marches into the room, his axe limber in his hand as he stands next to Devan.

After raising the alarm, the broad-shouldered man in the leather apron laughs, boning knife still in hand. "The Queen! Ha! You come here to arrest us in the name of the Queen? Fools! We'll just add you to the mix once we're done with you!" He flings the knife at Devan and then breaks for his stash of weapons which are also near to the door. The knife flies end over end, just missing the bold musician, and sticks into the wall behind him quivering.

That brings Atticus and Devan into the fray.

Seeing the men retreat and call for reinforcements, the musician sighed, wanting to end these two quickly before any of their brethren joined the fight. These were professional soldiers, so probably a tougher fight than Lamm and his cronies. Devan's brow furrowed at the mention of adding them to the 'mix', wondering if they were the first persons this group had tried to kill. They'd be the last, that was for sure.

Since the cowards had retreated across the room, obviously playing for time, the bard quickly switched his rapier to his off hand, drawing one of his darts off his belt as he moved forward and threw it at the man who had retrieved the bow. Once he let fly, he switched the slender blade back to his right hand, doubting either would get within range of it so soon, but getting ready just in case.

After dodging the flying knife, Devan reaches for his own thrown weapon. He flings a dart across the room while rushing closer to the enemies. The dart strikes the thin, sallow man in the shoulder, but his chainmail worn under the work clothes prevents a more serious wound.

Also rushing into the room, sling whirling about his head, Atticus releases a bullet at the other man which glances off his armor harmlessly.

Devan's pretty good with those darts

Twilgiht felt a little bolder entering the room now that she wouldn't be the first. She carefully moved up beside Nargun and decided to try out a trick she had been practicing back at the Acadamae before she left.

She didn't have to speak the words, just focus on the magical formulae in her mind. She didn't have to expend much effort at all to call the fragile illusion into being. With a touch, where Nargun was and where he appeared to be were slightly different. This would divert an attacker's strike off target just enough to miss what would otherwise have been a hit. She knew that the fragile nature of the illusion meant it would only work once, but with luck that should be all that was needed to keep him safe.

Subtle Misdirection Nargun: 20% miss chance for 1 minute or until it stops a single attack from hitting

As Mirela moves into the room she notices what Twilight is doing and a stray thought pops in her head:
Twilight can warp reality too? That’s like nothing I ‘ave ever seen Brother John do... I wonder if she can teach me?

Mirela moves up from her cover behind the abandoned cart and heads towards the door, the light from inside illuminating her target. She reaches for an arrow and let fly, but the shot is just off target narrowly missing.

Also entering the room, Twilight stands next to Nargun, and with what appears to be a simple touch, creates a mirage effect around the dwarf that confuses those who might try to attack him.

His bow now in hand, the thin bandit shoots at Devan at what amounts to point-blank range. Still slowed by the ravaging sickness, Devan tries to move out of the way, but is feeble body is slow to react, and the arrow hits home, scratching the man with a slight wound. After his accurate shot, the ruffian moves south to avoid melee.

The Killing Floor - Round 2 - continued

Grinning wildly and shimmering from the magical ward placed by Twilight, Nargun rushes heedless across the butchery, closing in on the bow-wielding bandit.

Near where Devan stands, one of the doors is thrown open, and the ill-mannered guard from the storefront, Baldrago, appears. He holds a well-used longsword in hand, but looks a bit out of breath from rushing to answer the alarm. "You!" he cries leveling his sword at Devan. "Knew there was something off about you! Shoulda taken you this mornin'. Baldrago'll remedy that now!" He doesn't attack, but by the way he brandishes his weapon, it's only a matter of time.

The apron-wearing man grabs his longsword which is leaning in the corner, and then moves in to cut Nargun off from the others, ready for a flanking stab once he gets into position.

Those actions mean that Atticus and Devan are up next to close out the round.

Devan looked at the larger man with bravado he didn't much feel. Still, he forced a grin to his face, trying not to focus so much on the large sword in the man's hand. "Yes, me! Who will remedy what? Who's Baldrago? Sounds like a stupid name..."

The musician chuckled as he taunted the man, casting Nargun a worried look as the other ex-guard went to engage him. Hopefully his allies would assist over there. And over here, too, for that matter. With a shrug, the young man stepped forward, jabbing at Baldrago with his rapier.

As the newcomer enters the room, Devan pivots to greet him with derision and cold steel. He scores hits on both accounts, drawing blood from Baldrago with a stab in the side.

Refilling his sling wit a bullet from the pouch at this side, Atticus hurls the missile at the apron-wearing man, who is engaged in combat with Nargun. The shot flies wildly away, clanking off the metal rail that runs around the room.
