Seldon Swiftheel |
Really? I'll have to take your word for it and revisit that in town. Also wheee! 3001!
Fumbling with the door latch, Seldon dissapears around the corner from Barek's view, the floorboards groaning in protest as he tries to gain on Mirela.
Mirela Malvo |
Sorry, crazy busy day yesterday! Just catching up.
Still in hot pursuit, Mirela was careful to keep a safe distance from the revenant of Ioanna. As she stalked the undead horror, she periodically looked back to see if the others were catching up; though she couldn't see them yet, she could hear footsteps creaking on the old floor boards of the Misgiving manor. Good, they're not too far behind.

Revenant Chase - Round 4 - continued
Mirela gingerly creeps back down the stairs to the first floor, just behind the undead woman, while Barek gets to the attic stairs door, which Seldon just cleared. He is about half-way to the stairs on the second level.
The revenant continues her steady march then suddenly stops. As Mirela peers around the corner, she notices the undead creature staring intently at the floor. There, from what she can see, is a stain of dark colored mold lies on the floor. The revenant stares at the stain as if transfixed.
Back in the attic, Tunder's fright at the woman's scream comes to an end, as he gathers himself, ready for action next round. Selena stores her weapon and picks up the mirror, preparing to take it downstairs when Tunder moves.
End of Round 4
Barek Hisdren |
Are there two stairs down from the 2nd floor to the ground floor? Did we ever see where the stairs in B10 go?
Barek continues his lumbering run after Miri and the undead. He curses his armor for slowing him down.
Seldon Swiftheel |
Seldon too continues his pursuit.
DM DoctorEvil |
The group opened the door to B10 and saw the stairs descending, but did not use them to go back down. Consider them like a servants stairs versus the grand curving staircase off the foyer. You can take them if you like, but remember opening the door is a move action.
Revenant Chase - Round 5 - continued
From the bottom of the staircase, Mirela watches the now-stopped revenant, which appears to be staring at a mold stain on the ground floor.
YOu can still act if you like, but figure you are just waiting and seeing?
Seldon ends this round right behind the lithe Varisian, having caught up to her at the bottom of the grand staircase.
Barek continues moving along the second floor hallway, not stopping to investigate any of the other rooms or doors.
The revenant stands stock still, transfixed by the mold stain, which appears to be in the shape of a spiral.
Selena and Tunder may now act if they wish to join the procession.
Barek Hisdren |
Barek contines to run down after Miri. He takes the main stairs.
Can someone move Barek another 40 feet?
-Posted with Wayfinder
DM DoctorEvil |
I moved Tunder and Selena for their round 5 moves.
Revenant Chase - Round 6
25 Mirela
19 Barek
15 Seldon
14 Revenant
5 Tunder
3 Selena
Unless I see something to the contrary, I assume Mirela and Seldon delay, watching what the revenant does?
Barek continues to hustle up, working his way down the main staircase, and ending up right behind Mirela and Seldon who seem to be waiting and watching for something.
The revenant, who had been frozen staring at the mold stain on the floor, suddenly unleashes another baleful shriek, then starts tearing at the floor, ripping up the stained carpet and pounding her way through the floor boards.
The baleful shriek requires a DC 18 Will save from those within 60' (Barek, Seldon, Mirela) or cower in fear once again for 1d4 rounds. But all get the benefit of the Protection from Evil spell (+2 on saves).
Upstairs still, Selena and Tunder hear the blood curdling screech, but are unaffected by it. They continue moving downstairs as fast as dwarf legs can go.

Revenant Chase - Round 7
25 Mirela (needs Fear save)
19 Barek (needs Fear save)
15 Seldon (needs Fear save)
14 Revenant
5 Tunder
3 Selena
As the group on the stairs crouches in horror at the scream and actions of the undead woman, she continues savagely ripping and tearing at the floor, eventually ripping open a hole to the level below. The revenant then clambers down purposefully into the hole in the floor she has created, disappearing from view.
Revenant Claw: 1d8 + 7 ⇒ (5) + 7 = 12
If you make the save and want to act to stop her or otherwise, just let me know.
Seldon Swiftheel |
Will Save + Prot Evil: 1d20 + 7 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 7 + 2 = 13 These rolls! It's becoming increasingly obvious Seldon didn't take the luck domain, isn't it? :P
Duration: 1d4 ⇒ 3
"Wait, look out... she's going to..." Seldon begins, as a familiar change comes over him again. Fleeing and cowering, he begins to mutter to himself, a manic edge to his voice. "WatchfulgoddessdarkladyofthecrossroadstransportmeNightMonarchtransportmeNig htspearSorrowbrandCrynosuretransportme..."
"Mára mesta, alla'Desna."

Will Save (Bravery, PfE): 1d20 + 4 + 1 + 2 ⇒ (15) + 4 + 1 + 2 = 22
Barek covers his ears at the shriek. "Holy s+#~!" he exclaims. He looks at the others, as the undead woman drops through the floor.
"Where the hell is she going?"
Seldon Swiftheel |
Perhaps Barek could use his action to restrain me? I don't want to wake any more of these haunts.
Selena Magnimar |
Selena continues her descent with Tunder looking for the rest of the party. hopefully they are not far ahead. When the shriek is heard Selena almost rushes forward leaving Tunder but realizes that separating from him right now would be a horrible idea. Keep going Tunder, we have to be close according to that shriek. I hope the others are ok.
Mirela Malvo |
Will Save: 1d20 + 4 + 2 ⇒ (19) + 4 + 2 = 25
With fear saves like those, it's almost like Mirela is being drawn in here... at least that's the way I'm going to write it here; seems appropriate given the situation.
Though terrified on some level, a dreadful curiosity had overpowered Mirela past any rational fear she should have been experiencing in that moment... but she had to know if, in fact, Ioanna was leading them to Foxglove. While Aldern had been her tormenting her with his madness and obsession all along, she couldn't bring herself to turn away at this point, though well she should.
Glancing over at Barek with wide eyes, Mirela spoke in an unnervingly calm and detached fashion, almost possessed by a desire resolve her predicament one way or another "I don't know Barek, but I have to follow her."
Barek Hisdren |
Barek looks at Miri with astonishment. "Miri, you don't have to go in. At least not yet! Let Tunder and Selena get here and we'll all go down together." The big man moves to block her from climbing down into the floor.
Barek looks back at Seldon, and grabs the man to keep him from fleeing. Miri, help me control Seldon! Don't go down yet!"
DM DoctorEvil |
The revenant screams once, whether in anger, victory, or someother unknown emotion, no one can say. The scream fills the good cleric with fear, and he shudders, muttering his prayers over and over again, as he is held by Barek and consoled by Mirela.
From behind, Selena and Tunder hear the scream, and their steps quicken to see what is amiss. They find the other group cowering on the stairs, Seldon's eyes wide with terror.
As the elvish priest begins to calm himself, the Mirela determinedly detaches herself from the rest and moves over towards the hole in the floor. The rest of the party slowly follows the Varisian girl, worriedly looking around.
Tunder Perception: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (1) + 10 = 11
As Tunder sets foot into the lower entrance hall, he sees the odd manticore statue suddenly lurches to fiery life. The face of the beast shifts to resemble Cyralie Foxglove, and the creature's fur erupts in flames. It's tail strikes forward against the dwarf, burning his flesh.
Burning Manticore tail, touch: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (15) + 4 = 19
fire dmg: 4d6 ⇒ (1, 6, 4, 2) = 13
Tunder can make a DC 15 Reflex to avoid catching on fire. If he fails will take more damage next round.
No one else notices anything amiss, as Tunder cries out and then suddenly starts to burn, the smell of roasting hair and skin quite pungent in the air.
Selena Magnimar |
Selena moves quickly forward and is rewarded by her efforts by seeing Tunder appear scorched and cooked. Where the flames originated from Selena had no idea other than the awful house once again playing with them. Looking around for anything to douse the fire with Selena resorts to grabbing her waterskin and pouring it on Tunder hoping that will extinguish the flames. Hang on Tunder, we'll help you! Somebody find something to smother him with.
DM DoctorEvil |
As Selena douses him with water, Tunder falls on the ground rolling around. The flames still lick at him despite these efforts.
fire dmg, some water: 1d6 - 2 ⇒ (4) - 2 = 2
Another DC 15 Reflex, but with a +4 bonus for rolling in the ground please. Success means you put out the flames, failure means another round of burning.
DM DoctorEvil |
All the group hears Tunder cry out as if under attack, then he suddenly bursts into flame. The brave dwarf then drops to the ground, rolling out the flames, but leaving his beard singed, and burns over parts of his body.
Exactly what and where the flames came from, no one can tell. The manticore, as far as anyone else saw, never moved, and even for Tunder, it is back in its normal shape and form, without any fire on it whatsoever.
Facing the Burning Manticore haunt awards the party 300 xp per player. Unfortunately, Tunder had to bear all the damage, but he survivied. The group now should have 10,638xp or about 6% of the way to level 6. Tunder took about 15 dmg from the fire, and should be at 45/60 hp.
Seldon Swiftheel |
Cure Moderate Wounds: 2d8 + 6 ⇒ (3, 7) + 6 = 16
Despite the horror of this place and his frayed nerves, Seldon can't help but chuckle as he sees to Tunder's wounds. "The horrors we face in this accursed place, and it's the hairs on your chin that give you pause. I'll never understand you dwarves, Tunder. ed' desna fallana sina harwe andir."
Selena Magnimar |
Relieved that Tunder is doing better Selena is alarmed that something might be still wrong with his mind. Tunder, before you go down aren't you concerned that you spontaneously burst into flame? I mean what if it happens again?
Seldon Swiftheel |
Seldon marvels at Tunder as he storms on ahead, making sure to follow to keep him in the range of his magic circle. He'll draw his longbow and nock an arrow, staying in the middle of the ranks to ensure the entire party are protected.
Mirela Malvo |
Approaching the hole in the floor cautious determination, Mirela's focus is suddenly broken by Tunder's scream. Looking back astonishingly, Mirela turns away from the pursuit to go and help.
"Tunder, my god, are you alright?" Shaking her head, Mirela looks again over to the hole in the floor before pointedly adding "Desna save me, this place is a madhouse." Picking herself up, Mirela followed after Tunder with more than a bit of respect for the cranky dwarf, who wouldn't even be stopped by the threat of spontaneous combustion.
Selena Magnimar |
Selena refreshes her light spell to allow those with darkvision to follow the resolute Tunder. Perhaps there was more to the beard loss than she suspected as the determination on Tunder's face broke no argument. He was going to end this once and for all. Looking to Miri to see how she is holding up Selena can do little at this point but to agree with her statement. I agree Miri, I joust hope we don't go mad as well being here.
At the hole Selelna starts to consider her options. Would 1 of you fine men mind lowering me down as I do not think i can make that climb.
Thorn, Omen bringer |
Thorn follows as he does silent and amazed at the strange happenings that they encounter.
Thinking to himself, At least I have my head, and not taking the brunt of the danger.
"Thanks Tunder for being the point man!" He says a bit awkwardly but still trying to cheer up himself if not the others some. He watches to see what the dwarf does and the others before freely following.
DM DoctorEvil |
As Mirela, trailed closely by the others, approaches the new hole in the floor, she sees a rather gruesome antique -- what appears to be a mummified monkey's head -- hangs on the northern wall near the hole, its tiny mouth gaping. A bellpull extends from the monkey's gaping mouth. A ratty throw rug used to partially obscure a foul stain of dark colored mold on the floor. The mold makes a strange swirling pattern about 10' across with blue, sickly green, and black molds all grown together.
Right in the center is punched the hole in the floorboards which drops about 10' into a dark area, which appears to be the house basement, below.
Selena Magnimar |
perception 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (18) + 1 = 19
Selena takes a look at the area where the mold started its strange swirling pattern. Not knowing what to make of it she falls back on her instincts and detects magic on the area before getting too close.
detect magic and spellcraft in new area 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (19) + 12 = 31
know nature/dungeoneering for mold 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (9) + 10 = 19
If she discovers anything she will relay it to the rest of the group. I can provide a light as we move on if someone wants it. Perhaps we should let Tunder go first a bit so he can see ahead of us with is darkvision. The rest of us follow behind ready to help him should he burst into flames again.
