23 Mirela (need DC 20 perception to act in surprise round)
22 Brown Ghoul
19 Selena (may act in surprise round)
19 Red Ghoul
18 White Ghoul
17 Gold Ghoul

8 Seldon (may NOT act in surprise Round)
6 Barek (need DC 20 Perception to act in Surprise Round)
4 Green Ghoul
4 Purple Ghoul

Still need Perception rolls from Mirela, Barek, and Thorn. IF you make it you may have a Surprise Round action (move or standard only). If you fail, you may not act until Round 1 on your count.

Sadly, Mirela won't be able to act this round... c'est la vie.

Glancing over at Selena with a sigh, Mirela acknowledges her observations in Sandpoint "I think some of the townsfolk think I'm already guilty, so we'll have to appeal to their reason."

Lost in thought, Mirela doesn't pick up the ghouls closing in on them as quickly as she might have otherwise done.

Female Human init +7 Transmuter 6 HP 38/38, AC 13*,13, 10* (* +4 for mage armor) saves +3, +5, +6

Careful now. 6 ghouls ahead. I am going to try and trap some of them with a pit spell. It won't last long but should separate them a bit.

Selena casts create pit targeting the 4 squares where red, purple, gold and brown are. They need to make a reflex save at DC 16 or fall and take 2d6 ⇒ (6, 1) = 7 damage. White and green need to make reflex saves at DC 16 but gain a +2 to their reflex save. Success means they move out of the way of the pit with no damage. The pit lasts for 5 rounds and requires a DC 25 climb check to escape.

M Human Fighter (Brawler) 5 / MOMS 1 | HP 50/55 | AC 20/13/18 | F +7 R +5 W +4 (+2 vs. Sleep, Paralysis, Stun, +1 vs.Fear) | Init +2 | Perc +4, SM +4

Perception: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (3) + 4 = 7

Barek looks over to talk to Miri. "Now that's no way to talk. You're innocent. These ghouls are part of this, not you. And we'll find Foxglove." Barek's conversation keeps him from paying close attention to the sounds ahead.

Ghouls Everywhere - Surprise Round

Acting quickly, Selena casts a spell that causes a deep pit to appear in the middle of the road right among the troop of oncoming ghouls. Two of the ghouls disappear into the pit, but the others avoid the fate and advance more angry than before.

Iona sings and her shot strikes the flat-footed Gold Ghoul, the bolt smacking into its undead flesh with a very satisfying sound.

End of Surprise Round

Gold Ghoul DC 16 Reflex: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (14) + 2 = 16
Purple Ghoul DC 16 Reflex: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (16) + 2 = 18

Green Ghoul Dc 16 Reflex: 1d20 + 2 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 2 + 2 = 10
Thorn DC 20 Perception: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 1 = 7

Strange dice rolls there -- all the immediately affected ghouls saved, while the two adjacent(with the bonus) did not. Odd that...

Ghouls Everywhere - Round 1

4 Purple Ghoul

Mirela is up for the heroes. Field squares (with no road showing) are considered difficult terrain and also impair a 20% miss chance and partial (+2 to AC) cover on attacks from those inside due to the poor visibility and the rows of tall corn.

Female Human init +7 Transmuter 6 HP 38/38, AC 13*,13, 10* (* +4 for mage armor) saves +3, +5, +6

Nice saves there. I expected more to be in the pit but at least 2 of them are taken care of for now.

Miri is on the clock. I will run her, if we don't see a post by this evening.

F Human Rogue (Acrobat) 6 | AC 17 T 14 FF 13 | HP 44/44 | F +4, R +9, W +5 | Init +5 | Perc. +9

Drawing both weapons, Mirela slinks off as quietly as possible in an attempt to hide and lay in wait for the ghouls to advance.

Stealth: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (13) + 10 = 23

Sorry, had a board meeting that ran late tonight. In any event, Mirela will advance and hold until the ghouls advance, and then strike.

Ghouls Everywhere - Round 1 - continued

Moving stealthily though the cornstalks at the side of the road, Mirela waits for the ghouls to move past her.

Brown Ghoul advances to the heroes, growling fiercely as it comes.

GM Rolls:
Brown: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (8) + 7 = 15

Selena up again for the good guys.

Female Human init +7 Transmuter 6 HP 38/38, AC 13*,13, 10* (* +4 for mage armor) saves +3, +5, +6

Wanting to make sure there is enough light to go around for all to see Selena grabs a sunrod from her pack and lights it illuminating the entire area along the road. Hopefully this does not effect Miri negatively as she snuck off but helps the rest who can't see that well in the dark.

Ghouls Everywhere - round 1 - continued

Lighting a sunrod, Selena succeeds in illuminating the crossroads quite brightly.

Red Ghoul climbs through the corn and back out onto the road. It rushes forward, the scent of fresh meat driving it a bit mad with hunger.

White Ghoul, which has fallen in the magically created pit, struggles to climb out, but cannot make it up the steep sides.

Gold Goblin charges Barek, jaws snapping shut on nothing but air as it tries to embrace the street fighter.

Red: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (2) + 7 = 9
White climb: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (10) + 6 = 16
Gold: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (1) + 7 = 8
Gold Bite, Charge: 1d20 + 3 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 3 + 2 = 11

Well, that was a big whiff for me. Now Tunder, Thorn, Seldon and Barek are up for the heroes, and I expect to feel the pain.

Dwarf Ranger 6 | AC 20 T 14 FF 17 | HP 61/72 | F +8 R +7 W +4 | Init +2 | Perc +11

Tunder takes another shot at the ghoul then steps up next to Barek while allowing Iona to swing from her tether and drawing Rumilda.

Ghouls Everywhere - Round 1 - concluded

I guess I will take Thorn's turn. He also still owes me a level-up...

Tunder's next shot with Iona misses as the creatures start to swarm in melee around the group. Letting the crossbow dangle, the stout dwarf hefts his axe, ready to start chopping wood next round.

Thorn rushes in from the rear, using his guisarme to fend of Brown Ghoul. The elven warrior strikes the ravening ghoul a fearsome blow, but it stands its ground still driven on by its insatiable appetite.

Seldon shoots a pair of arrows at Red Ghoul, striking in the neck once but only slowing it briefly.

Barek turns the ghoul in front of him into pudding with his fists, evening the odds somewhat.

Green Ghoul tries to clamber out of Selena's magic pit, successfully getting out of the hole, and howling with fury as he stands at the edge, preparing to attack.

Purple is also not able to sniff out the stealthy Mirela, hiding in the corn, and he advances past her to join the fray with his allies, taking the place of the squished Gold Ghoul.

Done.

Ghouls Everywhere - Round 2 - continued

Stealthy as a shadow, Mirela explodes out of the cornstalks into the backside of the Red Ghoul blades flashing. In a moment, the decapitated corpse falls alongside the road as one of the tortured souls is returned to Pharasma's judgement.

Brown ghoul continues pressing Thorn, striking at him with both claws and its noisome mouth. Fortunately, the elf fighter is able to stave off this onslaught entirely, avoiding and parrying each attack in turn.

Selena moves deeper into the corn field, and fires her telekinetic fist back down the rows, but the magical force bolt misses the intended target.

Being in that corn provides cover for targets for and from ranged attacks, but its a miss on the die anyway. Show 2/7 bolts used today.

White Ghoul, still in the magically created pit, struggles mightily to get out, but by the end of the round, it is still held inside.

Barek's fists shatter the ghoul who has been trying to get at him, while Thorn skewers the remaining close combatant with his guisarme. With those two down, the only remaining ghouls are White (in the pit) and Green (just out of the pit).

While Tunder is able to avoid any infection from the ghoul bite, he does succumb to its paralytic touch effectively held like a statue for 3 rounds.

Selena warns the others about the impending end to the pit, and the group rushes forward to prepare actions should the lone ghoul get free. It tries to clamber out of the pit once more, but slides down the side, bellowing in frustration.

Glad that everyone is back to their relative good well being Selena takes her position near the back where Thorn keeps her company. She gives him a pat on the arm and a wink while congratulating him loud enough so that Tunder can hear her. Thanks for finishing that last ghoul Thorn. I am glad that someone knows the wiser course of action of hitting the ghouls rather than being hit by one of them. Even Miri is smart enough to remain hidden so as to not expose herself. I thought dwarves were known for their wise and stalwart ways. Apparently not.

Looking at everyone else she asks, How is everyone else doing? I myself am fine and haven't been even threatened thanks to all of you.

Once itis established that everyone is ok then she is ready to follow tunder deeper into the corn maze.

Barek stifles a chuckle as he hears Tunder talk. "Hey Tunder, keep those ghoul hands off you next time. Better yet, let's go finish these off. There can't be many more, right?"

This time, the party is actually able to track the ghoul pack backwards through the maze of farming paths and towards a old farmhouse and associated barn.

Both look completely deserted, even a bit run-down, but there are no farm animals in the pens, or signs of human activity.

One of the barn doors is slip open about a foot, but nothing can be seen from within. An all-pervasive stench covers the place, whatever else this place is, it seems to be the center of the ghoul menace.

Will get a map for the barn and house up tomorrow. Right now, I am headed for bed.

He replies to Selena's question simply enough, "Well enough, a bit uneasy with so many undead about, though unharmed. Ah, it could have been anyone of us that was hit by those ghouls, I am just glad our stout dwarf took one for the team rather than me. At least he got out of it with his head still on his shoulders. That's right Barek, let's be done with this business!"

Map is linked at top.

The barn is he larger of two structures, constructed around a unique feature -- a 12 foot high stone head, canted slightly to the left, depicting a helmed warrior, his face a stern model of determination. Moss has grown over much of the weathered figure, making his features difficult to discern.

The farmhouse, while modest, looks well-kept, but dark and foreboding.
