DM Devon's RotRL aka "The Heroes of Sandpoint"

Game Master PirateDevon

Something sinister is happening in Sandpoint and only our heroes can stop it. See what happens when a group loses DM after DM and yet the heroes forge on!

Male Half-Elf Paladin 3

Wisdom Check: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 2 = 8

Kerrec looks at his wounds and lays his hand over them asking for Abadar's aid.

Lay on Hands (Swift action): 1d6 ⇒ 6

He moves out of range of the Barghest's claws (he will take an AOO if necessary).

Unable to call on Abadar's aid again in such a small period of time, Kerrec just takes aim at the creature, preparing to smite it on his next attack.

Attack: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (6) + 6 = 12
Damage: 1d8 + 1d6 + 3 ⇒ (8) + (6) + 3 = 17

No SR just DR

The group mobs up on the Barghest as Kerrec withdraws to shooting distance, Rullis closes to offer aid to Kithian and Vidar casts his spells from outside the melee.

The lot of you see no progress from your weapon, the Barghest's thick fur leading to a false representation of the creatures defenses. Blades are turned and bolts miss their mark, save for Camillo's blade and Vidar's magic.

The bard's blade eeks past the defense of the creature and offers a telling blow, the magical energy infused in the blade obviously aiding the attempt to do damage. The Barghest barks at the bite of the wound and offers a roar as the glass like missiles whirl unerringly into the melee and find their mark.

GM Screen:

Cam 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (9) + 14 = 23 1d8 + 6 ⇒ (1) + 6 = 7
Toshio 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (11) + 14 = 25 1d6 + 6 ⇒ (2) + 6 = 8
Kithain 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (13) + 14 = 27 1d6 + 6 ⇒ (2) + 6 = 8

Not content to contain its rage against a single foe, the fiend lashes out at all three men who have closed to melee with it, striking each with rending claw or in Camillo's case, the deep piercing bite from its wicked teeth. Cam takes 7, Toshio takes 8, Kithian takes 8 The creature offers a guttural chuckle, this agressive bloodletting seeming to please the creature to no end.

That worked, but not well enough, we need more...

Vidar, happy that the group expected trouble casts his second magic missile, this time with much more confidence and calmness.
As the missiles streaks forward he is already considering where to cast his next spell.

With the beast taking it's focus off Kithian and seeing only magic having effect, Rullis steps back and unleashes his own magic.

"I think the goblins were worshiping this thing." he shouts as arcs form in his free-hand. He thrusts a bolt of electrical energy at the creature.

Toshio landed a good hit, yet his blade was turned aside.

He changes tactic, though he would likely pay for the Action.

He attempts to AID ANOTHER to Kithian, to improve his attack, knowing the Barbarian to possess the most powerful weapon and he hit the hardest.

Ooops. Thanks missed that one, not that it matters with my roll. That's the third straight 6 the dice roller has given me on the D20.

Kithian's blade strikes hard into the creature's torso. It gasps in surprise as green/black blood wells onto its fur. Magic missiles strike, causing more damage. Camillo finds an opening once more and does his part to wear the creature down.

Rullis finds the creature just nimble enough to dodge his arc and the roiling combat is too chaotic for Kerrec to land a solid shot despite the declaration of his lord's providence. Toshio dodges, bobs, tests and weaves about the Barghest offering as many opportunities as he can to get the barbarian another solid hit.

GM Screen:

Kithain 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (15) + 14 = 291d8 + 6 ⇒ (7) + 6 = 13
Toshio 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (11) + 14 = 25 1d6 + 6 ⇒ (2) + 6 = 8
Cam 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (11) + 14 = 25 1d6 + 6 ⇒ (3) + 6 = 9

Despite the taxing wounds and the continued push on all fronts the Barghest continues its frenetic assault as it seems to gain an ever increasing joy from the perverse blood lust. An almost elated shriek emanates from the creature as it lands blows and bites on each of its opponents seemingly damaged but still vital and ready for more.
Kithian take 13, adjust for DR. Toshio takes 8. Cam takes 9

Bard (Arcane Duelist) 2/Rogue 2 AC 21/14/17, hp 25/25; Effect:

The blow he sustained nearly mortal, Camillo steps back 5' from the creature. Action pending.

DM:
If I cast a spell or use a potion, I will have to stop inspiring, correct?

Cam:
I dont believe that is true, maintenance is a swift action. My understanding is merely that you would somehow incorporate the action into your performance as long as you expended your swift action.

Answered my own question - it's moot.

As the bard steps away from the fray, he continues to sing and moves his sword to his left hand and gets a potion from his belt. If he has a standard action left, he will drink said potion.

The dice gods are harsh gods apparently. You guys cannot catch a break to hit this thing. Cam you can drink your potion and good thing too because you might have a problem... Let's see what Rullis has up his sleeve. (To be fair Kithian has closed the gap very nicely but this BBG is a robust one to be sure.)

Seeing Kithian's blood splatter, Rullis steps back up and tries to help the raging barbarian again. He seems to be the best chance to hurt this thing with his own attack not being effective.

Convert Doom to Cure Light Wounds
Cure Light Wounds on Kithian: 1d8 + 3 ⇒ (1) + 3 = 4

The dice gods have have cursed us.

Roaring the cleric of Gorum brings his axe down onto the shoulder of the Barghest and the creature roars in pain from the blow.Despite the aid of magic Toshio is easily turned aside and Cam extricates himself with a step to take a potion and keep his feet. Rullis opts to heal as Kerrec focuses hi breath and moves to fire once more but both men are dismayed as they see little reward for their effort.

GM Screen:

Now truly looking wounded and bleeding from deep and shallow gashes alike the barghest brings its clawed hands up and rakes Kithian across the face and torso with both set of menacing claws. The wound bite deep and the half-orc is wounded mortally though he keeps his feet through pure willpower. Kithian takes 12 and 8, adjust for DR

Confident that the blows will drive the orc to the ground the barghest turns to the annoying samurai who has continued to harry and peck at it. Biting at Toshio the teeth find flesh as the creature continues its rampage. Toshio take 10

Kithians woulds are pretty obvious at this point I would think?

I've got to try and keep him alive a little longer...Someone should be able to heal him.

Vidar moves behind Kithian and temporarily increases his vitality.

Kerrec sees Kithian fall even after drinking a potion, his wounds grievous. He puts his hand on the barbarian's shoulder. (Will take AoO if necessary).

Lay on Hands: 1d6 ⇒ 1

That should at least stabilize you.

Kerrec and Vidar: Kithian will successfully step to the side and drink a potion. He still drops unconscious but is stable from the potion's magical healing. Kerrec won't need to move in to stabilize and Vidar won't need to use the spell. Go ahead and repost your actions in light of this.

Male Human (Ulfen) Wizard (Enhancer) 4

Well, then Vidar will give Kerrec +2 cha for next round instead.

Ready to post but don't wanna get too far ahead.

Kitihan extracts himself from combat, swaying on his feet and using every once of his blood's natural resilience to lift his feet, pull his potion and dink. The potion wet on his lips the half-orc meets unconsciousness and falls to the floor. Alive, but certainly abused.

Seeing events turn poorly Toshio centers his thoughts, pulls in his breath and sets his mind on the training of his house. His steps lighten, he adjusts his grip and brings the blade down and across. Enhanced with Vidar's aid, the blade now humming an iridescent blue, the steel slices deep into the Barghest and the creature howls in rage swinging and slashing at the samurai with every intent to punish its assailant but each strike fall short as the wounds drive it to further madness.

Kerrec lines his shot but the turmoil of the combat, the desperation of the fight prove to overwhelm his normally steady hand and though the bolt makes its way to the creature, it fails to puncture flesh.

Rullis kneels to check the oracle and sees steady breathing and fair palor. The potion has done its work and so the cleric turns to do his. Calling on Gozreh once again Rullis' hand arcs out and lightning flashes from his hands. The bolt knocks the struggling Barghest to its knees, the creature utters curses in goblin and struggles ever still to find its footing and fight the sudden turn in fortunes.

Camillo finds his opening. The song of confidence on his lips the world seems to slow and the bard calls forth from himself that tiny spark of magic that is always but a thought away. The blade in his hand quickens just a fraction, the air around the blade hums ever so slightly and as Cam brings the blade up to strike the Barghest the world accelerates and he brings the blade down. It is not the strongest blow but it is deadly in its accuracy. Fighting for its feet the creature can summon no defense as the blades shrieks through the air and Cam pushes the steel through the demons neck.

The tip erupts through the Barghest's throat, Toshio and Cam alike are sprayed with life blood of the beast as the bard pulls his blade in one swift stroke. The demon dies before its head strikes the marbled floor and the sudden end to the fray leaves the two men eye to eye, covered in the blood of their mutual enemy, bearing the wounds from their mutual foe.

Rullis reacts quickly as the demon's head rolls. He turns to Kithian, setting his spear down. With one hand on the large man, he closes his eyes and begins chanting to himself, drawing on his faith. As Kithian's wounds heal, waves of healing energy burst forth, filling the room.

Vidar chuckles at he sees Kithian regain his feet, but beings too proud to admit relief to see him survive.
"Ah, Mr all-that-is-man returns to us. I am glad to see you back on your feet, though being bitten, mauled and clawed has in no way improved on your looks. Not that you had all that much to work with from the start admittedly."

It died from shock when you decided it wasn't worth the effort and took your nap. Camillo pushed the stunned beast over with his sword.

Toshio smiled. He was unused to telling jokes but it seemed funny to him.

Camillo stands there a moment, stunned by his good luck after such a terrible battle. As he's coming back into the moment, Toshio shows a spark of humor that catches him off-guard and he laughs long and hard. Still giggling, he says between gasps for breath, "I was starting to wish I had not heard the thing and blocked the door, that maybe it would have just snuck off. By the stars, what sort of creature lives for a thousand years in a locked room and has enough fight left to do what this thing just did?"

Male Half Orc Barbarian 3 / Oracle 1, Perception +5, Darkvision, Fort +6/ Ref +1/ Will +2, Init +4, AC 18, HP :47

Kithian nods his head at Camillo as he moves to take a good look at the demon.
"Well, in my defense it fought me after three days of no drink. I'm not at my best with these shakes."
The half orc prods the beast with the toe of his boot before giving it a hard kick to the head, then turns to look at Toshio before glancing at Kerric.
"Can this thing possess someone? Cuase I swear that aint our up tight friend here, crackin jokes and such, even one as unfunny as that one. Vidar, maybe you can help us out for once and tell us something useful about it, gods know your not much good for anything combat wise. Though I got to say those were some pretty lights you kept making"

Male Human (Ulfen) Wizard (Enhancer) 4

Vidar kneels down and turns the head of the fiend over to look into its eyes, marvelling at the lingering evil spark still present even after death.
"It is most assuredly an outsider of some form. And while the possession you talked about most likely was your OWN poor attempt at humour friend Darlock, I do not believe we have anything to fear on that account.
This beast possessed physical prowess, but whatever magical might it MAY have possessed was either burned out of it from its long incarceration, or its rage was too much for it to properly focus on such intricate details."

Stroking his beard slowly, Vidar considers.
"Outsiders are not alive as you and I understand it, they need not breathe, eat or sleep. As you noticed, their hides resist mundane attacks and most minor tricks of the mind.
What is most interesting is that its body remains, outsiders are not native to our world, and when slain here they will be hurled back whence they came, defeated but not dead.
This one remains, so the bindings must have been powerful indeed to keep it here.
Congratulations, we truly ARE demon slayers, unlike most who claim such titles."

Male Half Orc Barbarian 3 / Oracle 1, Perception +5, Darkvision, Fort +6/ Ref +1/ Will +2, Init +4, AC 18, HP :47

Kithian shrugs. "What can I say? I almost got sent to Gorum by a fiend from the hells and I really need a drink. I will be funny when I have a belly full with ale and my hands full with a wench."

Male Human (Ulfen) Wizard (Enhancer) 4

Vidar tuts and shakes his head sadly.
"It is as I always suspected then, your problem friend Darlock is that you just cannot count.
You are by nature gifted with two legs, that should provide more than enough room to bounce one wench on each limb.
Of course, if Mr "All-That-Is-Man" doesn't think he is up to the challenge..."

Wasn't there a door to the side?
