Today is the 4th of Neth, just as the winter winds are beginning to blow. This is the day, in the year 4535, when Ekat Kassen and his men set out from town to find Asar’s camp and deal with the mercenary.

It is early morning and you know today is the day you have been chosen to be one of the ones to travel to Kassen’s crypt and light the silver lantern with the Everflame. This is a great honor as you know how important the Everflame is to the town of Kassen. The lantern will remain lit through the entire winter as a testament to the hardiness of the people who live here and there founder.

The ceremony will start at noon you have a few hours before it starts. You have been told to bring only what you need on this trip as in weapons, armor, and spellbooks. You have been told that other provisions have been provided for you.

If you need to adjust you gear at this point you can do so now.

Feel free to role-play between each other or with your family/mentors. Tell me when you character is ready for the ceremony to start.

Baral Dorda is the first person to gather in the center of town by the greathall. He sits on the cold hard ground and starts to meditate hours before anyone else shows up.

Baral Dorda's personality may change drastically when his player shows up. This will be because he is going through a rigorous test at the moment and is very focused.

From some shadows near the greathall a couple of hours before the ceremony begins, Yorn says to his hidden mentor, "Do I have to sit like that guy? He's all folded up and so quiet. It looks uncomfortable."

NPC: Jimms"Short Change"Iggins

Jimms chuckles and pats his huge friend on the leg and says "No, No, my boy he is a fool. He seeks wisdom in silence in training and meditation. What he does not know and what we do is we do more living in one night at the tavern than he has his whole life. If living brings wisdom then you tell me who is more wise? Eh? No you just go out there and follow the ceremony and show the others how its done out there in the field. I know you will make me proud. Maybe you will bring back something shiny for old Jimms? Eh? O but don’t "borrow" from the bodies in the crypt they put a curse over them in there so bad you'll wish you was dead!"

Mark kisses his mother goodbye fondly - she's proud, but the worrying type, bless her. Mark knows that he'll be fine, however - Maggie's confidence is infectious.

The odd couple meander through the town, having to stop several times when townsfolk rub Maggie's ears or under her chin. Maggie naturally loves every minute of it, but Mark gets impatient after the third group of admirers, some kids that Mark knows around town, bury themselves in Maggie's fur. Finally he shoos them away and drags Maggie by her scruff for a few meters until she consents to walk with him normally.

They reach the blacksmith and Maggie plumps herself down outside, in a spot that might as well be outlined in the dirt for her, she's laid there so many times. Mark enters the smithy and his eyes automatically squint from the heat. Braggar's an early riser, and will have likely already been at work for a few hours.

They speak out back, away from the wheezing of the cunning automatic bellows that Braggar set up, and Braggar is short with his words, as usual. Mark responds in kind, saying basically that he'll be back soon, quickly enough to fill the rest of the order that Braggar's working on in the smithy. Braggar smiles a rare smile and claps Mark on the shoulder that still smarts as Mark approaches the greathall. He ignores the pain as excitement spreads a toothy grin across his face.

As you are walking to the greathall Mayor Uptal finds you on your way and takes the time to tell you what is expected of you for this quest.

You will head to Kassen’s Crypt with a silver lantern you must travel through the crypt overcoming many dangers, then you will light the lantern with the Everflame and come back to town with it. The mayor tells you he will give a little speech the end of which you will come forward and accept the quest. You should choose ahead of time who has the honor of carrying the lantern.

Of course you know about the celebration that will follow once you come home.

Female Human Oracle 1

Kierra winces at her sister's nickname for her.

Even today?

"Very ready!" replies Kierra, perhaps more eagerly than intended. "I'm gonna run by the temple ok? Just meet me down there, I promise not to be late....not for this!

Kierra grabs the few things she needs, her spear and sling, and her armor. She struggles for several minutes to get the leather armor on, it's bulky for her, and awkward to lash properly.

Kierra approaches her sister bashfully "I still haven't really gotten the hang of this, can you help me" Shalee deftly assists with cinching the armor to fit properly, and in what seems like a matter of seconds the fit is perfect.

"Sorry about that Sha....thanks."

At this, the girl runs out of the house and heads for the temple to pay a final visit to Father Prasst before the ceremony begins.

It's a good thing Shalee has been practicing with me, but I really hope I don't have to use this spear...

F Human Fighter 4

Shalee smiles as her sister bounds out of the house. "YOU'LL BE LATE! YOU ALWAYS ARE!" But then she gathers her own equipment. The armor was a good fit, protective while still ...remaining fashionable, in its own way. She takes one last look in the mirror before leaving on her own, hoping to find Wisslo.

Kierra when you get to the temple you see Father Prasst standing with the mayor speaking.

When they see you Father Prasst smiles proudly at you in your adventuring gear. Before he begins to speak the mayor comes to you and tells you what is expected of you for this quest.

Shalee: You find Wisslo where he allways is in the guard house. Wisslo is older and does not like to patrol as much as he used to in the winter he lets the younger guards take care of that now.

NPC Wisslo: Wisslo looks up at you from some paperwork he is needlessly doing trying to look busy. "Huh! Now what do you want girl? Can't you see I'm busy here? Shouldn't you be practicing with your polearms like I taught you?"

Wisslo:

"Humph! Girl armor ain't supposed to be pretty! It protects yer dern fool hide! Everflame huh? Well make sure you mind yer lessons. I'd hate to see you kill someone with a sword trying to show off like ya do. Why can't ya just stick to the basics girl?! AND HOW MANY TIMES DO I GOTTA TELL YA DON'T CALL ME DINGUS!

F Human Fighter 4

"No reason it can't do both! And don't worry, some of my ...'companions' might be loony-tunes, but I'll keep everyone in line. And the basics are fine, but only BASIC people stick to them alone. Anyway, wish me luck. Hopefully these brats don't annoy me the whole time."

Wisslo:
"Yea...well...just be careful...I mean that armor is expensive ya know..." He turns away from you to walk into a back room. You could have swore he almost teared up there.

As you are processing a rare moment of emotion from your mentor the mayor comes in to tell you what is expected of you for this quest. Of course you know about the celebration that will follow once you come home and just think of all the cute older boys will be there! And you will be the hero comming home with lantern in hand!

To Father Prasst, "I think I'm ready, but I'm not sure what to expect. Shalee and I have been practicing with my spear, but I'm not very good yet...Do you have any advice? I mean, I'm just not sure I know what I'm doing."

Kierra, takes a seat on one of the stone benches. She places her hands on her cheeks, the rest of her face betraying her worried mindset.

Father Prasst: "Kierra my dear. You worrie too much this is supposed to be a fun exciting thing you are doing. Noticing the fear still on Kierra's face Father Prasst realizes he is going to have to spill a secret to help his pupil. "Look I'm not supposed to tell you this but you are just so worried... You are in no real danger on this quest. Don't spoil it for the others but this has been set up by the town to give you young people a taste of adventuring. They think that after you 7 realize how hard and dirty it is you will come home and live simple lives and have families here. So don't worrie and have fun! Now run along you do not want to be late for this and its almost time!"

Hold that thought. Nalun has not posted yet so he is not ready to go to the courtyard yet. You are there and can listen in to anything Shalee, Mark, or Kierra say to each other. Although Maggie (the cat) knows you are in the shadows she is not concerned.

Shalee you walk into the courtyard to see the strange monk boy sitting on the ground. Mark and Maggie are also there.

Female Human Oracle 1

"Thanks! shouts Kierra as she takes the clerics advice and runs out of the temple.

As fast as she can Kierra runs towards the greathall to meet her sister.

I won't be late this time Shalee. You'll see!

No sooner than she had the thought, Kierra's foot clips an upturned root as she rounds a tree. Slamming into the ground on her shoulder, her backpack spills all of it's contents, her sling and it's bullets thrown in every direction. It takes her several minutes to gather everything together again.

Damnit! If I'm late, I'll never live this down!

Running again, Kierra makes it to the center of town, a substantial crowd has gathered. As she heads towards the greathall she pushes her way past people, ducking and cutting through the crowd, looking for her sister.

"Shalee! I'm here! I made it!"

GM Dave:
I'll leave it for you to decide if I made it in time or not.

Maggie has seated herself next to the monk and is mimicking his serious, meditative demeanor.

Kierra I got a question posted for you in discussion please.

F Human Fighter 4

"Barely. Ugh, how are you dirty already?"

Female Human Oracle 1

Slightly out of breath from running, Kierra answers her sister curtly,
"I fell."

F Human Fighter 4

"Ooooooooof course you did." Shalee turns to Maggie the cat. "And how's my favorite kitty today? You coming with us for some fun?"

Female Human Oracle 1

"HEY! At least I'm here...."

Her mind wandering, Kierra begins moving her fingers on her left hand in what seem like they're "supposed" to be intricate motions.

Snapping her fingers, *snap*, nothing happens.

oh yeah! I almost forgot!

*snap*, a couple of sparks fly from the snap, and a miniscule flame forms at the tip of her thumb, and then flickers out in seconds.

"Yes! Got it...."

Kierra is casting the "Spark" orison.

(I hope everyone can keep up this level of posting! I am just waiting on Lillian and Nalun. I do not want to move forward without them having a chance to role play a bit. You will still be late for the event we will just fudge the timeline a bit.)

Nalun is so engulfed in his text "A Timely Treatise Towards Thassilon" that Yord catches him flatfooted. Nalun is startled and falls sprawling into the dirt.

Oh, huh, hey Yord. Excited about the Everflame huh? I read that it really hasn't gone out in like hundreds of years. Or was it thousands? I need to investigate, I know I have my copy of "Everflame Explained" somewhere around here

At this point Nalun begins the laborious process of digging through his pack looking for the book.

Oh bummer, I can't find it. But theres Holgast maybe I can ask him
Nalun walks towards his tottering master.

Nalun has scribed 8 scrolls in preparation for today. 2x Magic Weapon, 2x Enlarge Person, 2x Sleep, 2x Color Spray. This costs him 100gp in cash for materials for ink.

Holgast: "Who? What? O yes do you have my tea boy? Everflame? O yes...much to do excuse me your Worship!" Still muttering to himself he casts fly and floats away.

Everyone except Lilly the Druid and of course Kierra is by the great hall.

To clear up any confusion everyone is standing in the same place. We are just waiting on our Druid to continue.

Oh well I'm impatient.

The bells atop the Temple of Erastil toll their midday song, echoing throughout the quiet town of Kassen. As the peals begin to fade, the first of the townsfolk make their way into the square, dressed in black, as if attending a funeral. They slowly fill the square, moving quietly across the cold, hard ground, their eyes downcast and mournful. After a few moments, a murmur passes through the crowd as it slowly parts to let Mayor Uptal through. He leads the way with a tarnished silver lantern. Behind him, an old pony drags a cart laden with backpacks and supplies.

Once he reaches the center of the crowd, Mayor Uptal stops and calls out to the assembled townsfolk. “Once again the winter winds blow through the Fangwood, marking the end of another harvest. There are wolves in the woods, howling at our walls, and serpents in our shadows, waiting to strike. Just as it was one hundred and seventy-four years ago, when Kassen himself left these wall to protect us, so it is today. Where are the heroes? Where are the brave folk that will venture out to Kassen’s tomb and retrieve the flame to keep this community safe for another winter?”

(This is the part where you step forward)

The mayor is ready to give the lantern to who ever has been chosen by the group.

Lillian sprints through the woods having heard the bells chiming from the distance. She couldn't believe all the nonsense her teacher put her through: meditating, trying to see how the forest feels today. Didn't she know how important this day was.

Lillian arrives to see the crowd is already assembled and the ceremony has started. Her companions have all stepped forward and look set to accept the lantern. She sees Yorn step forward and then Shalee with her a display of her bladesmanship. Now's my chance. she thinks.

Lillian hurries up next to Maggie, hoping no one noticed her tardiness.

Glad to see you post Lillian. Can you put your character stats in her profile please?

The mayor goes to hand Yorn the lantern, but is then mesmerized by Shalee's performance. The entire crowd gasps and claps at such skill this girl has. Yorn forgotten is left standing as Shalee is handed the lantern instead.

Your backpacks with 6 pieces of map are distributed and you are sent on your way to the crypt.

Sha made his fighter with a high charisma score just so he could be the face of the party. I want everyone to shine in there chosen roll.

Kierra claps along with the gathered crowd, her face beaming with pride for her older sister.

"Are we ready to go then everybody? Shalee, be careful with that lantern."

Kierra begins skipping and singing behind the group as they head out.

"The fire burns, in darkened crypt,
the lantern oil, and readied wick,
stand prepared, to be re-lit."

"The everflame will light the way,
and remind us all of fateful days,
in Kassen's tomb, the fire burns,
we await, dear children your return."

Mark steps forward beside the tall half-orc, nodding to him briefly. Maggie is by his side. "We're ready, sir!" He holds out his hand for his backpack, and grasps it tightly - then empties the contents of the backpack he was given into his own satchel. "No offense, sir...just made this satchel myself, got a preference for usin' it."

When the party sets out, Mark will hold aloft his piece of map. "Hey guys...uhm..." His voice falters a bit when everyone looks at him, but he clears his throat and continues. "I've got my piece of map, why don't we put it together first and I can see about leading us to the crypt while we look at it?"

Yorn wrote:

(Good then I just misunderstood your intentions.)

(I am going to drop the monk he has not posted at all in a few days and I want high volume posters. If he comes back I will work him in but for right now he is going to go off and do his own quest respectfully.)

(A note on combat. Like I said I am not going to use a map so its going to flow more cinematic. You can sneak attack anytime another person is attacking the same creature 2 on 1 we will consider flanking.[I think thats how sneak attack works...If not thats how I like to do it. There is also something about going first in the round I think?] So just describe what you are attempting to do and unless it is completely outrageous I am not going to worry about: ok I take a free action to X then I use a move action to X then I will do a standard...We are not going to do that.)

(Just say I am going to charge the X and try to chop its head off. I will take that as a charge attack. If you succeed I will tell you how close you came to actually taking its head off.)

(Hope that makes sense to everyone.)
