DM Darkblade Giantslayer Campaign (Inactive)

Game Master GM Darkblade

The Giantslayer Adventure Path begins in the fortified town of Trunau in the southern part of the Hold of Belkzen. A series of strange events trouble the beleaguered town. At the town’s request, the PCs must uncover the source behind these events and step in to save the town from forces which seek an end to Trunau and it's peoples.

It takes Songan only a moment to react to the situation at hand. No way would they let Petrus live...even if they were allowed to escape, they would slit his throat the moment they were beyond weapon range. There was only one way to react to this incursion, this new threat against a defender of Trunau: Force!

Without blinking an eye, the catfolk turns on the roof and draws a bead on Vorom, suddenly feeling, again, confidence surge through him that he can take his target without accidentally hitting Petrus. And even if he did, it would be a more merciful death than what these horrid creatures would allow. With nary more than a moment's aim, he releases the bowstring, the missile flying swiftly through the air, bearing down on its target!

Activate Archaeologist's Luck. 4/7 rounds remaining. Also assuming that I can use Point Blank Shot on this attack, given their relative proximity.

Nice!

"Save him!!" Songan calls to the others, hopeful that his remaining companions will be able to finish off, or at least distract, Vorom and his traitorous partner before they are able to finish the job.

DM Roll:
Petrus Previous Damage: 1d6 ⇒ 1

Songan's arrow strikes hard into the half-orc's shoulder, jerking his arm back and momentarily creating an opening of weakness as Vorom adjusts to the blow. Petrus, scared and near panicked, attempts to break free of the traitorous bandit's hold Break Grapple: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (9) + 1 = 10, but fails to do so, his frail condition and age no match for the half-orc's raw strength. No, stop, let me go...

The orc drummer high overhead continues to beat hard and fast at his drum, inspiring his troops below and signaling for any and all within hearing distance to rally to his aid. The song, fast beat and chaotic, seems to drive the orcs on with wild abandon even as it loses more and more of the rhythm and structure that it once held. To me, to me, my children. For Grenseldek and our Twisted Hearts

Vorom laughs out loud at the old man's struggles, despite the pain in his arm from the protruding projectile. Maybe it's the drums affecting him, but his bloodlust seems to rise visibly as he growls out They doan thinks we means it's Urnsul, toos bads. The half-orc grips the elder villager tightly Grapple: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (18) + 12 = 30, his dagger stabbing into the old man's shoulder for Damage: 1d4 + 4 ⇒ (2) + 4 = 6. For fun the half-orc grins as he twists the blade, causing Petrus to nearly faint from the pain. The half orc pushes and drags the sobbing man across the alleyway, closer to the next home and a bit of cover from Songan's archery.

Urnsul likewise moves closer towards the group, her hand gripping a heavy warhammer, the head of which is etched and embossed with a flowing, knotted design. Looking for me were ya? Her off hand plucks a small vial from off her belt, one by which Leira is well versed. It is a vial of alchemist's fire crafted by her mother, the shock rising up on the girl's face as Urnsul Tosses: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (13) + 2 = 15 the vessel at the sorceress' feet, covering her in burning oil from her boots up to her midriff, for Damage: 1d6 ⇒ 3. Ouch, I guess you accounted the -2 for the extra range penalty, anyway that fire really will hurt :/

"Petrus! Nooo! Let him go unwitty pack of half-porks!" Leira feels how a powerful rage gets inside him.

As for the grapple rules I understand Petrus is in the square just next to Vorom and not in the same 5', am I right?
Otherwise my actions will be totally different as I don't want to burn him down, poor guy :(

Leira moves 20 feet to the north 3 diagonal squares and then 5 to the north-west, extending her hands almost instinctively tongues of fire start to born from her fingers and a powerful burst engulfs both of the half-orcs in flames "You like the fire Urnsul? Take this! I will save you Petrus!"

Leira's fire is unusually strong, consuming twice his strength, burning twice as devastating.

Yes Petrus would be in an adjacent square, but Vorom was allowed to place him in whichever square around him he desired at the end of the movement. While I did not place him in a particular square, Vorom will have kept his prisoner between himself and your group, i.e. in front of himself. If he maintains his grapple and makes his Reflex Save, it is likely he will have shielded himself with Petrus's body.

For combat purposes Petrus should be considered in front of Vorom, as described in the flavor text of the encounter. He is gripping Petrus tightly with one arm, turning the knife in his shoulder with the other, seeking cover from Songan's arrow.

How do you wish to proceed?

Concentration Check vs DC11: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (4) + 9 = 13

Leira is correct, Dundin could not reach Vorom with a single move action and be able to strike at him. He is able to reach Urnsul.
Leira forgot however that she needs to make a Concentration Check when casting spells while undergoing ongoing damage effects. Concentration

Tuzak rushes forward and slashes at Orc 3, his paw finishing what Jace had started, ripping the last bits of life out of the filthy warrior. The orc drops it's bow and falling over into the mud, bloody and dead.

Dundin makes a rushing approach around the corner of the building, hampered slightly by the hard corners and slippery grease. The sudden assault launched by the dwarf momentarily took the half-orc smithy by surprise. The blow nearly did take her head off, but her strong thick neck was much too corded to be so easily cleaved asunder. The cut was deep indeed, and blood flowed freely from her grievous wound for a few moments, just long enough for Urnsul to glance at Vorom as she died. The heavy fall into the dirt finished the damage and the last vestiges of sinew snapped, rolling her head away from her body, close enough for the dwarf to viciously kick it in Vorom's direction.

Leira's Daze affect momentarily washes over Vorom, but the shock and anger he has at the death of his mate pushes him beyond reason, beyond the reach of her spell. He shakes off the effect, tightening his grip and grinding the blade deeper into the old man.

Groin rushes up to the tower, not entering but stationing himself outside the doorway, waiting for either assistance or the chance to strike. His presence seems to have silenced the archers perched within, for no more arrows appear, none firing upon himself or the beasts open in the courtyard.

Delia hears Leira's cry and spots Dundin rush past her... She hesitates for just a moment, then shouts directions to Jace. "Jace, defend Groin!" She then peers around the corner to see the ongoing situation and moves out towards the northwest to give herself a good line-of-sight to the cowardly orc. She takes a moment to line up her shot perfectly, whispering a prayer to Erastil to guide her arrow... and then releases!

Also, he does not receive the +4 bonus to AC due Deadeye Bowman... not that it really matters.

-------------------------------------------------------------------

Adir rushes into the tower, intent on taking out the drummer rallying the invaders to this point. "Come, Tuzak!"

-------------------------------------------------------------------

I assume I'll need at least a double move to reach him.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Delia's bowshot, perhaps spurred on by Leira's desperate hopes, flies straight and true, striking the sneering half-orc cleanly through the throat as he tries to cry out a vain and faithless threat against Dundin for duly killing the traitorous Urnsul. Vorom chokes but a second as the arrow slices into and past his vocal cords, nicking a spinal vertebrae before severing the brigand's spinal cord. Like a puppet with it's strings cut, the creature drops to the ground, releasing both Petrus and the dagger he had buried into the man. Petrus seems to be taken by shock, stumbling towards the wall nearby, slowly sliding down it to the ground below. The man is alive, lucky to be so, but Delia knows it was not luck, but Erastil guiding them today. As they fight to save their homes, so has Old Deadeye been adjusting their aims, they remaining as true as their devotion to the cause and each other. 4 points over his total, with stagger. Urnsul was 3 points over her total with Fight On.

Adir rushes up past Groin, past Jace, squeezing into the tower and beginning the rush up the stairs which circle the hollow shaft, ringing the wall higher and higher to the roof access above. Almost immediately he is confronted by a waiting orc warrior, number 5, it's greataxe at the ready, just waiting for the chance to strike. Readied action for the next closest target 10' up the stairs.

Yipe! Totally forgot that I haven't even done anything yet this round. My bad!

Songan meets up with Petrus, quickly leading the man into the nearby house and instructing him to hide inside; there are still other orcs about and he doesn't want to risk the injured man getting hit with a stray arrow and being killed despite their efforts.

He does his best to reassure him that the group will return for him as soon as the remainder of the threat in the area is handled, hopefully no more than a minute or two, and that they will make sure he makes it back to the district entrance safely.

Once he is sure that Petrus is, for the moment, as safe as he can be, Songan moves to join the others, swapping his bow for his longsword as he does.

Does Songan jump down from the rooftop or climb to go meet up with Petrus?

The catfolk barely registers the old man's coat and robes are packed to bulging with a variety of jars, bottles, vials, and strange glassware, clinking and jostling as he moves.

High overhead, the orcish drummer continues his throbbing song, determined to carry his performance as loudly and as far over Inner Trunau as possible, inspiring his orcs and drawing them to his aid.

Orc warrior 5, fully under the drummer's sway, takes a leap down a few steps and swings his Greataxe: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (7) + 6 = 13 at Adir, missing short in his eagerness to attack the fair haired "giant," the blade digging deeply into the wooden step, then roughly hacking it apart as it is drawn back up again. Dundin's movement speed will not allow him to enter the Tower on this round.

No AoO for Adir, sorry. The "jump" was flavor text for the 5' step down into range. The orc was waiting 10' up the stairs for someone to approach. Adir's movement ran out just shy of triggering the readied action. The size difference is the reason the orc did not receive a +1 bonus for attacking from height, the 5' movement why he could not charge for that bonus.

Also the stairs are only wide enough for single file. Large creatures take up an additional space, so I am debating whether to go with half movement for the bigger guys ala Acrobatics or a -2 Circumstance Penalty to attack rolls and AC to reflect the sidealong approach. Thoughts?

Dundin rushes to aid the others, his dwarven legs pushing as hard as he can over the ground littered with orc bodies as well as the remains of many shattered Trunaun lives.

Tuzak rushes after Adir, the great sloth hesitant to climb the stairs behind his master, but obeying when given the command.

Leira quickly begins scanning the bodies of Vorom and Urnsul for magical auras, detecting that some are present. In her visual scan she can see they carry a variety of items that may prove valuable, though maybe not of immediate use. She can see good weapons, potential potions or alchemical items, glints of gold, etc... Urnsul even has a few crossbow bolts spilled across the ground for her own weapon, strapped beneath her back.

Groin follows the others into the tower, holding on the ground floor close to the risers. He takes his last hand axe and tosses it up at the orc blocking Adir, the Axe: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (10) + 4 = 14 missing to the left and striking the wooden stair nearest behind the orc's leg.

Leira's concentration is slightly interrupted as she hears orcish voices, shouts of anger mixed with battle cries from beyond the tree fires.

Flavor text only, Leira is not disrupted from the casting. 1st round determines if magic is present, yes it is. It will take Songan one full round to move Petrus to the house he is currently standing adjacent and leave him there.

Orc Warrior 6 takes aim and fires an Arrow: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (19) + 1 = 20 at Adir, cutting a furrow across his shoulder for Damage: 1d6 + 3 ⇒ (1) + 3 = 4. Good thing Adir didn't need to make the Acrobatics check, being so low on the stairs. Higher up that could have been painful.

The orc sounds are further beyond where the Hounds Mistress was when you encountered her, up towards the houses, likely in line with the barricades beyond the burning trees. Perception checks allowed for yourself, Leira, and Songan to gain further information, though the DC is high obviously to make out details.

Leira turns to his comrades, her face full of burns from the alchemical products thrown at her. She seems suffering but determined "Delia, Songan, you have to go help our friends, they got injured and need healing. We have to free the tower before fighting the new orcs arriving or we will be flanked" she turns towards the tree lines and looks through "I will keep an eye here, and perhaps found something useful among our enemies possessions"

Round 7
-------------------------------------------------------------------

Aware that he is creating a bottleneck, Adir tries to grab the orc in front of him and throw him off the stairs.

-------------------------------------------------------------------

Reposition: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (12) + 8 = 20 BAB(2)+Str(5)+Size(1)

Reposition: I think this works since it isn't inherently dangerous.

Delia is able to make out there are multiple orcs present shouting and rallying around someone.

Leira can determine the group is outside the doorway to the partially destroyed building furthest from her towards the left, the one adjacent to the city wall. She hears parts of a conversation, Duk’ yerku .... ognut’.... Kagak. Duk’ yerku gnal ..... hin .... zinvorin. ... patrastvum yem ...... zvarchanal ... spitak mazerov hyurynkalel. Guts’ye ... karogh ... anel, .... gorral, hehehe...

Orcish Translation:
Paraphrased guesswork - You two go and help Kagak. You two go and kill the old human soldier at the ?. I am going to have fun with this mute white haired elf. Maybe I can make him scream...

Adir is assaulted provokes an AoO as he bodily grabs the orc and attempts to move him off the stairs to the floor nearby. The orc backcuts with his Greataxe: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (16) + 6 = 22, scoring across the druid's flank for Damage: 1d12 + 5 ⇒ (5) + 5 = 10, even as he is lifted from the stairs and dropped the few feet to the ground beside the druid and now facing the eager warrior Groin as well as a few animal allies.

Songan is going to get back to the others as quickly as he can; I doubt he will be able to get into the thick of it this round, but if he can, let me know and I'll roll up a longsword attack since he'll be swapping out for that in the close quarters.

Yup! Petrus is priority, but he'll run back as fast as he's able once that happens.

Delia grins wickedly as her arrow takes the half-orc filth through the throat and drops him immediately. After hearing the amassing orc somewhere on the other side of the burning trees, she is torn for a moment. Leira was right, they needed to clear out the tower and take down that drummer before they could face the next threat. She nods to the younger woman and rushes off towards the tower without another word...

Double move back towards the tower!

I believe orc #5 is within Jace's access now?

Meanwhile inside the tower, Jace roars as Adir brings the orc within his grasp and right next to the target he is supposed to protect. The massive warcat steps forward and lashes out at the orc with tooth and claw.

Bite Attack: 1d20 + 7 - 1 ⇒ (1) + 7 - 1 = 7
Bite Damage: 1d6 + 5 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 5 + 2 = 9
Claw Attack: 1d20 + 7 - 1 ⇒ (9) + 7 - 1 = 15
Claw Damage: 1d4 + 5 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 5 + 2 = 11
Claw Attack: 1d20 + 7 - 1 ⇒ (12) + 7 - 1 = 18
Claw Damage: 1d4 + 5 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 5 + 2 = 8

Jace takes a 5' step and full attacks Orc #5.

Songan hurries the encumbered elderly man over and into the nearest building, what once was a small workshop fronting a single family home. The owners may have been basket makers or sellers, from the number of smash and trampled wicker containers tossed about, the orcs having ransacked the place looking for worthwhile loot. Fortunately for Songan, no one had been home when the attack came, there are no bodies or signs of struggle as can be expected in other such places.

Petrus thanks the strange catfolk, sagging heavily into a stool near the counter, laying his head down upon the counter. I thought for sure they were going to kill me. Thank you, thank your friends, thank the gods that you were there to save me. I will wait right here for you, come get me soon, I want to be away from the lines, somewhere safe. Get me to the Longhouse please.

Songan then steps out into the courtyard, ready to rush to help his companions.

Delia rushes as quickly as she can around the greasy mess the catfolk made, then straight on into the guard's tower. She sees her cat Jace, incensed with the smell of blood, lunging forwards and gutting a burly orc with his forepaws, spraying a wash of blood and viscera over himself and Groin. An enlarged Adir is moving up the stairs, Tuzak close on his heels. Higher up, a lone orc bowman takes aim at the group, while further still the drummer continues his throbbing performance.

Leira holds concentration on the detect magic spell while picking as much useful stuff as she can. She starts with potion, getting then to the finest weapon if Adir or Groin can use it, and then any bunch of bolts or alchemical products if she has time remaining.

Leira Detect Magic Round 2 Concentration:

Numbers of different magical auras and the power of the most potent aura:
Leira is standing next to Urnsul.
There are 3 magical auras on Vorom, all potions.
There are 3 magical auras on Urnsul, a potion, a wand, and a cloak.
The wand appears to be one Leira has seen her mother use, a birch wand with small agate chips embedded near the tip.
The cloak is dirty gray with a crude rendition of the Twisted Hearts symbol sewn on the back in red fabric.
The cloak bears the strongest aura, though it is Faint, the stongest faint of all the others.
Leira can grab or manipulate one item with a move action, as she is still in combat rounds.
Both Vorom and Urnsul wear masterwork armor and carry a masterwork melee weapon, breastplate and greataxe for Vorom, studded leather and warhammer for Urnsul.

For Dundin, you can hear from Songan there are more orcs coming, or you can proceed to the Tower.

For Tuzak, unfortunately you cannot easily squeeze past the Enlarged Adir on the narrow stairs. The great sloth burrows down and bullies through between the druid's legs, then moves up the stairs, the efforts slowing him but he is able to make the press upon the orc, but not enough time remaining to attack. Squeezing past Adir counted as Double Doubled movement because of the stairs, that 5' square took 20' of movement. Stairs don't allow for charging so I'm afraid no attack this round.

"Oh, mom's wand!" Leira picks the wand while kicking enraged at the half-orc.

She keeps concentrating on the spell as to know what are the objects in the next round, specially the cloak.
I understood neither the weapons nor the armor are magical

That made me confused why Songan did not took Petrus to the hospital line but instead to the menaced house, he just did not understood the incoming danger I fear XD

Is there some clarification missing from us Second Group Darkblade? I think we are all action posted right now.

Grand Lodge

Male Catfolk Bard (Archaeologist) 4; HP 24/24; AC 19/14/15; F+2/R+8/W+3; Init +5; Per +10

Crap, I totally missed that. There's no way Songan would just abandon Petrus if he knows there are other enemies in the area. That's asking for trouble and their efforts thus far to be in vain. Songan would not make immediate attempts to rejoin the others, then; if I have time to adjust my actions, I will; if not, I'll wait until next round.

The house Songan is depositing Petrus in is secure for the moment. The only close threat is atop the tower and multiple teammates are responding to it. Songan can hold the line with Dundin and Leira in advance of more threats coming. As the house has been ransacked, Petrus should be okay in the interim, as long as he stays put and stays quiet.

The delay in posting was due to an unfortunate case of real life, work and home responsibilities that kept me away from the keyboard, allowing only a few minutes of posting here and there. Further, as I had posed a question to Dundin, I was awaiting his response. Then Songan asked his question so I added it to the delay queue. My apologies.

Orc Warrior 6 takes a 5' step up from Tuzak and then takes aim, firing an Arrow: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (20) + 1 = 21, Confirmation: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (20) + 1 = 21, the arrow striking Tuzak in the throat for Damage: 3d6 + 9 ⇒ (5, 1, 4) + 9 = 19, the sloth slumping down, choking on it's own blood, it's body landing flatly and heavily upon the stairs. Acrobatics: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (8) + 6 = 14

There is no sign of the orc voices yet, though they have quieted down somewhat.

Round 8 Begins
