DM Darkblade Giantslayer Campaign (Inactive)

Game Master GM Darkblade

The Giantslayer Adventure Path begins in the fortified town of Trunau in the southern part of the Hold of Belkzen. A series of strange events trouble the beleaguered town. At the town’s request, the PCs must uncover the source behind these events and step in to save the town from forces which seek an end to Trunau and it's peoples.

Dundin nods and muses: "Surprise is important. But letting your quarry prepare can be dangerous."

Dundin goes back to waiting.

After about ten minutes of waiting, a hulking figure begins to "stealthily" approach the ruins. It stops every thirty feet or so, sniffing the air and looking about for watchers, but seems to fail to notice your groups, well concealed by the trees and brush away from the ruins. From the silhouette and what brief glimpses scattered moonlight offers, it may well be a flood troll, much as Rodrik mentioned in his notebook.

At 60 or so feet from the ruins the creature foregoes any semblance of stealth and, rising to it's full 7' height, strides towards the front steps and doors into the ruins.

Edit: Sorry, forgot about the previous checks. Thanks for re-posting.

The Flood Troll knowledge checks were made previously, when in discussion with Katrezra and having received Rodrik's journal. I will repost here.

As for Flood Trolls, these tall, gangly giants have thick hides of mottled blue; protruding yellowed canines; narrow slits for eyes; and large, powerful hands that end in wicked claws. Flood trolls are monstrous nomads—wandering hunters who follow the herds of game and pay close attention to humanoids' travel patterns. They are cunning by necessity, since they are smaller than their brethren and must often surprise their prey to earn their meals. While not afraid to pounce on their victims once they can catch them, most flood trolls prefer to use stealth tactics and crude traps to put prospective victims in hazardous situations before attempting an ambush. It is rare for them to travel this far south of the Flood Road, at anytime of the year. To do so while winter is still covering the area is stranger still. They have similar abilities to others of their ilk, longer arms, tough hides, regenerative capabilities, etc. though they are smaller and overall weaker than most true trolls.

Second Group: Groin, Jace, Songan

First Group is up, 36 hour timer counting

The flood troll at first smells, then sees the robust dwarf stalking out from the eastern blind, weapons at the ready. The creature squints at the stout warrior, then utters a guttral roar. It thumps the ground heavily with it's gangling arms, fists kicking up a bit of dust in the dim moonlight. As it moves towards him, gaining speed, it notices Leira following closely behind. The beast's eyes widen at the thought of the human flesh and tough dwarf meat it will soon be enjoying. The beast gives a series of barking coughs as it approaches, ready for battle. The sound echoes weakly from the cliff wall, not enough to likely alarm anyone already present in the ruins.

Adir is currently 215 feet from the flood troll, to the east.
Delia is currently 215 feet from the flood troll, to the east.
Dundin is currently 55 feet from the flood troll, to the west.
Groin is currently 215 feet from the flood troll, to the east.
Jace is currently 215 feet from the flood troll, to the east.
Leira is currently 60 feet from the flood troll, to the west.
Songan is currently 215 feet from the flood troll, to the east.
Tuzak is currently 215 feet from the flood troll, to the east.

The surprise round is over, the troll is charging Dundin and Leira, which results in it moving away from the other party members.

First Round Update

The flood troll charges at Dundin, failing to even notice Delia's failed strike in the moonlight. The creature easily sidesteps the dwarf's ax blow, itself giving an arcing backhand with it's Clawed Hand: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (19) + 8 = 27 for Damage: 1d6 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 2 = 3 , striking Dundin's right shoulder, easily connecting but holding little power. The creature is slightly winded from the sudden exertion it had not thought to expend, rushing across the open plain at the pair. It's breath smells of dankness, fish, and swamp gas, it's hide appearing hard and cracked in spots. Dark eyes look down at Dundin, the beast growling out something as it squares up with it's prey.

Giant Jabber:
I will have no enemy, only a feast of stringy dwarf-meat.

The flood troll is startled as Tuzak, so focused on running, slides past the creature when the great sloth tries to stop his frantic charge. The beast hears Adir following behind, breathing heavily. The troll attempts a wild swing at the sloth but misses, Tuzak hunching down and digging in with his paws to slow his speed. Second Round Update

The flood troll let's out a strangled croaking roar, more bullfrog than giant, it's heavy and gangly arms crashing towards the now larger Dundin. The left arm: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (5) + 6 = 11 strikes weakly against the dwarf's armor while the right arm: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (5) + 6 = 11 is easily deflected by the haft of Dundin's waraxe. Dundin attacks again, standing his ground to keep Leira from being charged.

attack: 1d20 + 6 - 1 ⇒ (2) + 6 - 1 = 72d8 + 4 ⇒ (1, 3) + 4 = 8

The blow is wide as he dodges the claws.

Third Round Update

Hmm, I got two posts from Dundin, but alas both failed to connect.

The flood troll remains standing, defying Adir and Tuzak to stop it from taking it's frustration out upon either Dundin or Leira. It leers at the girl, a lascivious grin forming on it's boar-like snout, tusks stained a greenish yellow curving outwards, dripping with a thin foul smelling slime. The creature licks it's lips, eyebrows flexing towards the young girl.

Adir, Tuzak, and Flood troll left to act.

Round 3
-------------------------------------------------------------------

"Dina ben kommer att gnisslade om du inte ge upp!," Adir yells as he closes the distance and spins, stabbing his spear at the troll.

-------------------------------------------------------------------

Giant:
Your bones will be gnashed if you do not surrender!

ShortSpear: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (11) + 5 = 16
Damage: 1d6 + 5 ⇒ (2) + 5 = 7

Adir's spear digs deep into the flood trolls back, causing it to roar in pain, staggering back as it dislodges the shaft. The creature falters a step, raising it's arms high for a last blow at Dundin.

Tuzak has an action before Dundin learns his fate.

Round 3
-------------------------------------------------------------------

Tuzak rushes in, swiping at the troll's legs.

-------------------------------------------------------------------

Claw: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (20) + 2 = 22
Confirm: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (18) + 2 = 20
Damage: 2d4 ⇒ (3, 1) = 4

Seemed unlikely, but I waited just in case it surrendered.

Tuzak was only 10' from the flood troll, so a 5' move would have allowed him to "sloth hug" the beast, making both attacks. As it was, the swipe was enough to put the creature into negative numbers.

Tuzak rushes forwards next to Dundin, a huge paw swiping out and cutting the troll's leg out from under it, an audible crunch heard by all as the femur shattered under the blow. The beast hit the ground hard, oof, ughhh the wind nearly knocked from it. Dust, mucus and slimy saliva splatter everywhere, the flood troll going silent except for the last vestiges of it's life seep out into the night air. Groin and the rest of the group arrive as the flood troll expires, it's final breath an exhalation of rancid rot and decay. As Delia arrives she quips, good naturedly, Smell it Dundin, that could be you if you keep resisting bathing on a regular basis.

The humor calms every ones nerves as you all look around, watching for spies or lookouts. No one else seems to have seen the confrontation, nor is any other creature moving about. Slowly, the sounds of night return, the natural insects and fauna of Trunau returning to calm patterns now that the invading troll is no more.

With careful movements, you search the body, relived when you find the creature does not live up to the reputation of it's species. It does not appear to be recovering from it's wounds. The thing had no weapons, no pack, bags, nor pouches. Indeed the only thing the creature had aside from itself is a painted brand upon it's shoulder in a fading red dye, a bleeding bitten heart pierced by a jagged, twisted iron nail, a symbol out of Trunau's past. It is the symbol of the Twisted Hearts, a mixed orcish and hill giant army that once sacked these lands, the site of their last defeat here in Trunau, upon Bloodmarch Hill, the foundation of which you gaze at as your eyes lift upwards, from the cliffs here to the town perched precariously above.

Closer examination confirms the rune is indeed painted on, not tattooed or scarified into the thing's hide. While indelible, it appears the ink is fading, worn with time. That or perhaps there is a way the troll can regenerate. Groin suggests burning the body once you are done below, for now, Let's just sever the thing good, and keep the pieces a piece apart.

The painted rune is the only link you can find which would tie this creature to the group you have been investigating. Twisted Nails on the inside, now Twisted Hearts on the outside. The flood troll is likely part of a larger band, they seldom survive alone, which would suggest others may be also, lurking outside of Trunau, waiting for orders from whoever inside is pulling the strings.

You realize now how very important it is to find the figure who entered the ruins before the troll arrived. He may well hold the key to this whole mystery. If it is true, the Twisted Nails are reuniting with the Heart Eater hill giants, and Trunau is facing serious peril.

Why now, who all is involved, and what does Rodrik have to do with the story?

Congratulations everyone.

When the rune is discovered, Adir curses in several languages, the essence of which is "F'in' hill giants!" He turns and steps away for a moment, looking out and into the evening sky. Finally turning back, he agrees with Groin, though he suggests bringing the body to the council before burning it. "And let's keep the head with us," he grimly suggests.

"It's time we enter the Plague House and find out who is behind this," he says resolutely, cracking his knuckles in anticipation.

Which way down to the lower levels do you wish to take? You have the trapdoor in the haunted room or the stairs from the main chapel area?

A quick scan of the ground floor indicates no one is around, and the upper loft is likewise empty. It would seem the conspirators meet up below ground.

Also, if you take the flood troll head, I need to know who is carrying it and how.

First, I love that this is pertinent information. Trolls! Does it have hair? If yes, and people are agreeable to taking it, Adir will tie it to his belt using the hair. A bit morbid, but he's angry.

Second, I'm voting not the haunted room.

Was he carrying anything? A note? items?

Still suffering from the intensity of the battle Leira bends a bit over herself, then tends to Dundain "Are you ok? Has he injured you?"

As the tattoo is discovered Leira takes her dagger and resolved cuts the skin of the troll where the tattoo appears "We can take this symbol for now and hide the corpse. It is going to be difficult to move it right now with us. As for his regeneration..." the girl places her hands over the injuries of the troll "I have heard fire and acid neutralize their regeneration..."

I can do it, I can do it all of a sudden a splash of acid appears on Leira's finger, who grins in emotion "I did it!" and finishes treating all the injuries with acid "That should do it"

Assuming we hide the body within the trees, unless someone has a good idea on how to carry him...

"Nice new belt Adir", grins the girl "I also think we had a hard time with the haunted room. I also say let's take the stairs as stealthy as we can. We have to do something fast. This thing is huge, Twisted Hearts! For all gods!"

Sorry about my minimal posting this weekend. It's been a rather crazy work week which was only made worse by the massive storms we had roll through here.

Delia narrows her eyes in anger when she spots the mark upon the troll's shoulder. "Yes, hack its arms and legs off, then stash it in the bushes. Make it quick though, we must needs find this remaining figure. They shall be brought to justice and interrogated. This new information bodes very ill for Trunau..."

Yes the flood troll has hair... Refresher Image

Your group quickly stows the body and heads back into the Plague House. you make your way to the cathedral hall, and head to the southern doorway. The stone stairs end in a stark subterranean chamber. Doorways to the northwest and southwest offer egress from the room. Around the corner to the south, a lone statue has been relegated to a dusty corner behind the stairs. Dusty tracks are scattered about the room, though most look to be rather old.

After the fight, Dundin was quiet, but smiled, having passed his first real combat test. He wished other dwarves hand been there to see him, but the group he was with would do for company. Leira did talk a lot, but humans tended to do that.

Dundin approaches the statue after moving around the corner.
stealth: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (3) + 5 = 8
Perception: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (9) + 8 = 17

Dundin finds the statue depicts a warrior woman clad in plate armor standing at rest in a pose of peace, with both her hands wrapped loosely around the hilt of her sheathed sword, which looked oddly askew. Peering closer, the dwarf found the sheath and blade were not attached to the statue, but rested there, a removable piece of the art. The blade is masterwork, with a sunburst etched into the blade, one longer ray tracing along the blade's fuller to near the tip. Scuff marks near the base indicate this statue once rested elsewhere, but was moved here.

"Interesting" Leira observes the sword with curiosity "Do you think it might be magical? I think we can remove it from the statue. Anyone?"

Leira analyses the magical areas in the area, specifically from the sword, with the help of detect magic, trying to identify its powers if magical.
Spellcraft: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (8) + 6 = 14

She then checks if there is some hidden way behind the statue "It is odd they moved the statue, don't you find?"
Perception: 20 + 1 = 21

As for the way to follow, I would say to continue through the NE corridor where we can check the Iomedae sword room (if there is no hidden door behind the statue), and then follow to the North. Map

There are no magical auras in this room, sword, statue or otherwise. There does not appear to be any secret doors either, but rather the statue was moved here from another room, off to the west.

Glad you remembered you had not searched this level before posting the map so you could find your way to the sword room, tsk, tsk, tsk.

How will you proceed, in ranks, as the corridors are single file?
