DM Dan E’s Legacy of Fire (Inactive)

Recruited to reclaim the town of Kelmarane from a tribe of gnolls, six adventurers find themselves caught up in a series of events that may change the face of Katapesh: the Legacy of Fire.

As Sajan's opponents close around him, the monk uses his enhanced reach to good effect against his off-balanced attackers, their momentum from charging played out. Slapping aside a scimitar thrust with his palm, the monk kicks out hard against one of the gnolls, following with a straight punch that shatters the gnolls snout. The warrior lurches on its feet, blood pouring down its face and just barely standing. I'll go with AL,39 unless you have a preference.

Zeladiel steps back out of the elemental's reach, finding space to cast. The summoned creature cocks its "head" slightly at the wizard's words just as Zeladiel's barrage of missiles hits it. Thud, thud, thud. The creature moans and is forced back slightly, much of its mass dissipated by the attacks.

The blinded archer continues to struggle against Zeladiel's enchantment, while its snarling mount (not at all happy at the glittering motes coating it) strains against its grip. Very deliberately, the archer rolls off its mount and when it fails to do so cleanly simply falls off, landing hard against the floor. It gets back to its feet, still clutching its bow, as the hyenadon dashes forward. It appears still under the effect of the spell.

Free from restraint (and direction), the hyenadon barrels forward to engage the closest target, Sajan (AL,AK,37,38). The beast lunges forward, powerful jaws snapping, but it fails to find purchase, Sajan staying ahead of every attack.

Bite vs Sajan 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (7) + 11 = 18 miss
1d8 + 12 ⇒ (3) + 12 = 15

The gnoll's captain strides forward grimly, shifting his bardiche back and forth in a display of martial skill while continuing to inspire the gnolls with words of slaughter. Not as fast as the others in its breastplate, it anchors itself near the closer fire-pit while setting its weapon (AH,40).

The blinded priest picks its way forward as best it can, kicking aside bloody bones as it moves up between the two pits (AG,37). It almost screams a prayer to its dark god, the chant seemingly further bolstering the fighting ability of the surrounding gnolls. Spellcrafters can make checks, your varying distances away which complicates the DC. For all that though it still seems unable to fight off the spell.

Will Carrion Initiate 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (7) + 4 = 11 fail

Surrounded by enemies, Sajan keeps up his defensive posture while striking in a furious flurry of powerful blows, focusing first on the Hyenadon and taking a cautious step back to avoid being flanked. The first blow is an icy cold one, as icicles form on his cold-coated fist, a reflection of his chained fury and merciless attitude to the creatures before him.

If the first or second, third or fourth attack drops it, please re-direct the later ones. My preference is first to drop the one hit on my AOO followed by the Gnoll in AM35, after that use DM judgement :). If any attacks are re-directed at Gnoll's, add 1 to attack and damage. Fighting defensively. Ki point spent for extra attack.

Sajan's blows are as merciless as they are precise, the monk not even bothering to drop his lantern as he slams fist and feet into the hyenadon again and again. With a sickening crack the beast's ribs cave in to a right cross and Sajan stomps down hard with a giant foot, snapping its left foreleg. It barely has time to start howling when the monk kills it with an almost casual tap of his fist to the head, but Sajan isn't quite finished, spinning to reverse his momentum and kicking the wounded warrior in the chest. It flies backwards perhaps fifteen feet but is clearly dead before it hits the ground. Second hit not quite enough but the third more than sufficient.

Grall's tumble off the steps is not the most gainly but the barbarian manages to keep his feet, if barely, even when the gnoll just below fighting Nuveril manages to land a gash to his leg as he falls. It can reach and thus threatens AL,44 on the steps (if only just) so yeah applying squeezed AC. I'm treating AM,42 as just out of reach.

Nuveril smiles grimly with satisfaction as the gnolls oblige her by rushing in instead of making her chase them. Giving the hammer in her hand a little toss to settle it more firmly in her grip, she blocks out the awful smell in the room and everything beyond the gnolls in front of her. Beginning with the one dwarfed by the enlarged form of Grall behind it, she proceeds to undertake the job she signed up for when she set out for Kelmarane so many months ago.

I assume she needs to roll the miss chances. Is Khalid still our light source? I'm not sure who's providing our supplemenatary illumination right now. I'm handling most of the bonuses in Hero Lab, so the numbers should be right. I'm including Rage, Power Attack, haste, bless, bull's strength, flanking, Pack Hunter and Gnoll Killer. If she somehow manages to kill the one in AL 43, take 3 off to hit for not flanking the one in AM 42. AC should be 21 vs. gnolls.

The gnoll who slashed Grall swings its shield wide at the halfling to keep her back but the halfling will have none of it, darting under and lashing out with both hands. A quick hit to the knee is followed by a more damaging overhand chop to the chest and the halfling downs her opponent with a flourish and a brutal hit to the face with her shield, the weapon's thick spikes sinking almost eagerly into its flesh. The small barbarian turns quickly to the warrior's partner, who manages to just catch a viscious horizontal hammer sweep with its shield. Just missed. Your in the range of Linah's normal light so OK at the moment at least without having to worry about which-way Sajan is angling his lantern.

Linah steps back and utters a quick prayer, healing most of her wounds.

The unblinded priest growls in frustration at the gnoll's rapidly diminishing forces. Chanting, it gestures at Sajan as if it were plucking a harp and the monk feels his body begin to tighten and lock-up under the mental assault. It looks at Linah but is seemingly unwilling to risk rushing past Grall's blade.

Hard for it to pick the deadliest target out of all of you. Will save DC 14.

Another big map update required, so will give Sajan a chance to roll before I update with the warriors.

The disciplined monk appears to throw off the priest's spell easily.

The elemental pauses for a moment in its pursuit of Zeladiel. It shudders and shakes, growing wider and larger, losing its man-like features entirely as it becomes a whipping, funnel of air reaching from the steps up 15'or so to the ceiling.

It sweeps toward Zeladiel and the elf is too slow to evade. He is buffeted by the whirlwind and then sucked right into it.

Movement doesnt provoke unfortunately.

Not done, the whirlwind reverses direction toward Khalid, carrying the elf helplessly along with it. With little room on the steps to dodge, even the agile inquisitor is caught the same way. Both elf and inquisitor are swirled around, trapped in the middle of the vortex.

Khalid Reflex vs Buffet 1d20 + 5 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 5 + 1 = 10 fail
1d8 + 4 ⇒ (1) + 4 = 5 damage

Khalid Reflex vs Trap 1d20 + 5 + 1 ⇒ (9) + 5 + 1 = 15 fail

Whirlwind:

A creature that comes in contact with the whirlwind must succeed on a Reflex save (DC 10 + 1/2 the monster’s HD + the monster’s Strength modifier) or take damage as if it were hit by the whirlwind creature’s slam attack. It must also succeed on a second Reflex save or be picked up bodily and held suspended in the powerful winds, automatically taking the indicated damage each round. A creature that can fly is allowed a Reflex save each round on its turn to escape the whirlwind. The creature still takes damage that round but can leave if the save is successful.

Creatures trapped in the whirlwind cannot move except to go where the whirlwind carries them or to escape the whirlwind. Trapped creatures can otherwise act normally, but must succeed on a concentration check (DC 15 + spell level) to cast a spell. creatures caught in the whirlwind take a –4 penalty to Dexterity and a –2 penalty on attack rolls. The whirlwind can have only as many creatures trapped inside at one time as will fit inside the whirlwind’s volume. As a free action, the whirlwind can eject any carried creatures whenever it wishes, depositing them in its space.

One of the javelin throwers drops its missiles and steps in to attack Sajan, flanking with the warrior on the other side. The three hack away at the monk furiously as he ducks and weaves, alternating between offensive and defensive counters. One comes close, agonisingly close to the vengeful gnolls, but the monk again remains uninjured.

- The room has dim light (20% miss conditions) through to about 20' high and the near part of the pit and darkness beyond. A light spell generates 20' of normal light. A bullseye lantern provides normal light in a 60-foot cone and increases the light level by one step in the area beyond that, out to a 120-foot cone.

But my warriors are falling quickly, too quickly to hold.... to retreat means to die. Their speed enchantment will not hold for much longer. If I fall, Shiz will avenge me.

And rushes at Grall (AH,42), bardiche spinning, he yells in common, IN THE NAME OF THE BEAST, DIE RRENEGADE!

But Grall is ready. Feet firmly planted, the barbarian parries a powerful straight thrust with his falchion, capturing the shaft with the cross-guard. The two struggle for a moment, face to face, before the captain pulls his weapon free.

His enlarged hand shoots out, grabbing the gnoll by the throat and he simply crunches it to death, snapping its neck and letting the body fall limply to the ground. Turning on the remaining two, he elbows one in the face before clubbing it in the ribs, just below the heart. It dies choking, leaving the monk with a single opponent.

Note as above one of the scimitar attacks was a hit for 6 hp.

On the other side of the room, the gnoll's captain sags, staring in disbelief at the several feet of fine folded steel stuck through its body. It coughs out a few words before dying, a very bloody Grall yelling his challenge. Ends inspire courage.

Gnoll:

..king? Shiz..save ...

With their numbers rapidly diminishing and their leader dead in seconds, your enemies morale (aside from the elemental) seems to have gone from rock solid to near cracking. The priest yells out a series of exhortions in its God's name but most of the warriors who can look on the verge of fleeing.

Nuveril.

Female Halfling Barbarian (superstitious) 7 | hp 72/72 (86/86 raging)

Undoubtedly spattered with the blood of Grall's victim but oblivious to the further gore in her enhanced condition, Nuveril turns her attention to the gnoll who provokingly deflected her hammer swing; she has not yet taken notice of the cut on her arm.

Rage
Hammer 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (13) + 12 = 25 damage 1d6 + 12 ⇒ (5) + 12 = 17
Shield bash 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (14) + 12 = 26 damage 1d6 + 7 ⇒ (4) + 7 = 11
Hammer (haste) 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (18) + 12 = 30 damage 1d6 + 12 ⇒ (1) + 12 = 13

If the first two swings take down the gnoll in AM 42, she'll 5-foot-step to AL 42 and apply the last one to AK 42. All of above conditions included, minus flanking and Pack Hunter.

Nuveril's target has caught its fair share of the blood splatter as well but has no time to gawk at Grall. With increasing desperation, it moves its shield back and forth, blocking Nuveril's strikes. Each time, the halfling moves it further and further out of alignment. And then she makes her move, a screaming sidewise hammer strike blows the shield out of the way entirely and the halfing steps in, raining blows on the gnoll with both hands. It goes down hard, face and chest a ruin.

Stepping forward, she strikes the gnoll attacking Grall a solid blow in the side.

Linah exchanges blows with the spearmen, who finds the close quarters uncomfortable with only the heavy spear for blocking. Linah delivers a half dozen strikes but only manages to slip through her opponent's guard and armour with one, gashing the spearmen's arm. Also giving you a higher ground bonus for fighting down the steps but doesn't matter here.

Its most powerful enchantment rendered useless on Sajan, the priest turns to Grall, pointing a finger at him and chanting. The gnoll feels an unatural fear gripping him. Will save (fear) DC 13.

The whirlwind continues to buffet Zeladiel and Khalid, the pair smacked against each other in the vortex.

A bullseye lantern provides normal light in a 60-foot cone and increases the light level by one step in the area beyond that, out to a 120-foot cone.

Normally the cast but not the attack. In this case its evident that it can't AOO in whirwind form.

With the assistance of the Dawnflower's blessing, Grall resists the gnoll priest's spell and it hisses in irritation, looking over its shoulder reflexively. Then it yells, seemingly to the air elemental and jabs a finger at Grall.

Gnoll:

Attack this gnoll. I command you by the power of the gem. Rovagug damn you!

But if the whirlwind creature is aware of this it gives no indication.

Zeladiel waits, doing his best to avoid being slammed into Khalid and you feel his speed enchantment fade.

After a few more seconds of struggling, the archer finally manages to throw off the effect of Zeladiel's spell. It rubs its eyes, staring in horror at the near carpet of its fellows corpses. Seeing its mount amount the growing pile around Sajan it growls in anger at the monk, reaching for an arrow.

Will save Archer 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (9) + 1 = 10 pass

Impulse 13. More combatants enter the fray on the gnoll's side, a quartet of priests, equipped like the others with greataxes, enter through the closer western door. Forming a line (AJ,AI,AH,AG,30) each chants a complimentary prayer to Rovagug, some spell but with no visible effect. One barks a command to the retreating javeliner. Again feel free to spellcraft although Zeladiel is rather distracted.

Gnoll:

In the Rough Beast's name, fight or die! His avatar comes!

The blinded priest casts another spell on itself and this time it seems to work. It shakes its head and looks around, having also apparently finally managed to throw off the blindness.

No it does not. Weird that was most definately an 18 in the preview. Ah I know what happened. Initial post was borked with a wrong spoiler close leaving all the content in the spoiler. I posted again and deleted the previous one, assuming rolls would line up in order as they usually do. Well I'll adjust to reflect the post.

Or someone will have a crisis and I'll miss the edit window. I'll call it as it appears on the board, a fail. The archer remains blinded.

The heady feeling that the world is moving in slow motion around her has faded with the elf's spell, leaving Nuveril suddenly out of sync with the room around her. Zeladiel struggles and fails to hold on to his spell while Sajan's fist crunches into his target's face, the knuckles ruining the gnoll's snout and filling its left eye with blood. It sways on its feet, only just standing and manages only a feeble swipe as the monk moves back to link up with Grall and Nuveril, casually stepping over the pile of corpses at his feet.

AOO Scimitar vs Sajan 1d20 + 6 + 1 ⇒ (8) + 6 + 1 = 15 miss
1d6 + 3 ⇒ (3) + 3 = 6

Grall continues his inspired attacks against his fellow gnolls, cutting the gnoll's spear in half with his falchion and then the gnoll itself from neck to navel, ending its life with a bite to the neck.

Nuveril's opponent, wounded and looking increasing desperate, only just manages to block even her relatively un-coordinated attacks. Bit torn here. Nuveril could have stepped into a flank with Grall which would have had both attacks hit. Nearly adjusted it myself but don't really like doing that without knowing whether it was deliberate or you just didn't have time to look at the map (if the latter I'm inclined to just ret-con a hit I can't really see any good reason not to take the flank). Particularly important as it manages to subsequently hit you below.

Linah hastily retreats up the steps to help Zeladiel and Khalid, parrying away the spearmen's opportunistic prods with her scimitar.

AOO Longspear vs Linah 1d20 + 5 + 1 ⇒ (11) + 5 + 1 = 17 miss
1d6 + 3 ⇒ (2) + 3 = 5

Her channel revitalises everyone in the group, although also healing the minor wounds Linah inflicted on the last spearmen and bringing one of the gnoll's Nuveril downed back to consciousness (although it looks ready to drop again)(AM,42).Assume you meant AO,44 for the move? That gets all the friendlies including Sajan. Description assumes you exclude the elemental and the gnoll Nuveril is fighting. The others look dead or very wounded anyway.

The priest near Sajan and Grall faces a difficult scenario, with both warriors able to strike at him if he moves forward. It settles for moving backward instead (AA,43) and casting another spell. This one is familiar, an ebony greataxe materialises in the air near Grall and swipes at him. The gnoll is ready though, blocking the magical (but physical) attack squarely with his falchion.

Spiritual Hammer vs Grall 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (2) + 4 = 6 miss
1d8 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 1 = 7

Fortunately or unfortunately, depending on your point of view, the air elemental does not seem to speak gnoll and seemingly pays no attention to the priest's commands. It continues to throw Zeladiel and Khalid around in its winds, only Linah's healing keeping the elven wizard conscious.

Buffet vs Zeladiel 1d8 + 4 ⇒ (6) + 4 = 10 damage
Buffet vs Khalid 1d8 + 4 ⇒ (5) + 4 = 9 damage

The surviving warriors act, their numbers massively diminished from a mere 30 seconds ago. The javeliner tries to skirt the newly arrived priests, on its way to the door. The closest priest yells at the gnoll and swings at it with its greataxe as it moves past. The javeliner dances back and dashes past in a run.

AOO Greataxe vs Javelin Gnoll 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (2) + 7 = 9 miss
1d12 + 5 ⇒ (10) + 5 = 15

The warrior Sajan wounded (AL,36) kneels down and, dropping its scimitar, picks up several javelins from the nearby corpse of the first gnoll that Sajan killed.

Nuveril's opponent manages to dig its scimitar point past her shield, scoring her right eblow. See above.

Scimitar vs Nuveril 1d20 + 6 + 1 ⇒ (17) + 6 + 1 = 24 hit
1d6 + 3 ⇒ (4) + 3 = 7

The lone spearmen thrusts his weapon at Grall, now almost completely covered in enemy blood except for his chainshirt and manages to gash him in the ribs.

AOO Longspear vs Grall 1d20 + 5 + 1 ⇒ (11) + 5 + 1 = 17 hit

Its hard to hear over the top of the furious battle but you can hear many gnoll cries, particularly from above and beyond the western door. It has not been long and the gnolls still seem to be gathering but it seems you will face substantial further forces eventually.

From beyond the second set of double doors on the western edge of the temple you can just hear a powerful base voice shouting commands..

The archer finally manages to regain its sight, Zeladiel's spell having run to its full duration.

The arriving carrion priests move up in their line (AJ,AI,AH,AG,36) toward Sajan, Grall and Nuveril, anchoring themselves with the priest in AG,37, and each casting yet another spell on themselves. You can try spellcraft as above.

That last priest seems content to wait for its fellows before rushing forward and casts a spell on itself.

Khalid and Zeladiel are up. The whirlwind seems to be losing momentum as if the elemental cannot maintain it for much longer... Their actions are a bit map independant but I'll update before Sajan's impulse.

Edit: Forgot the poor prone weaponless gnoll warrior on 1 hp that Linah channeled back up. He retrieves his weapon and gets back to his feet provoking from Nuveril and Grall although the latter takes -4 from cover.

Nuveril brings her hammer down hard on the head of the crawling gnoll (AM,42), shattering its skull.

Khalid is again unable to steady himself enough to launch proper attacks on the air elemental.
