I'll wait for Khalid to do whatever he's going to do. If he gets off of the island, it leaves a little room for Nuveril, although all she can do is get there and put herself in the way to be attacked. Did we decide that was a DC 10 jump? Can she make an Acrobatics check to avoid AoO after the Acrobatics check for the jump?

Yes and yes noting that acrobatics to avoid AOO cuts speed in half while jumping obviously does not.

As Khalid leaps the shocking shortspear darts toward his midriff. The inquisitor twists desperately, his field of view reduced to nothing but boiling lava and black iron. With the salamander off-balance it is enough, just enough for him to avoid the strike and land next to Linah.

I'll take one of your above rolls as the concentration check :). D,8 or C,8?

Female Halfling Barbarian (superstitious) 7 | hp 72/72 (86/86 raging)

The taunting words of the mephit only fuel Nuveril's anger. "We are fighting for no reason in here," she complains, "to win another creature's battle. We know nothing of which side is in the right. We are bandits, entering another tribe's camp to kill their leader in exchange for the favors of one too cowardly and weak to strike by itself. We are mercenaries, not heroes." Running from behind Grall, she leaps across to the rock island where Sajan is fighting and ducks around his back, trying to avoid the salamander's shiplike tail. Looking into Thratnias's eyes, not knowing if the fire creature can understand her words, she nonetheless tries to express with her gaze that she will bear the other no ill will if it kills her. "If this were my tribe, I would fight us, too."

Rage; Move to B 9; Acrobatics to jump 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (13) + 12 = 25 ; Acrobatics to avoid AoO 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (9) + 12 = 21
Should be 45 feet of total movement, so ought to leave her room for the half-speed squares

Thratnias seems to understand what Nuveril is saying but there is no empathy in in her cold serpent eyes nor her response. Her deadly tail whips out fast and low straight between Sajan's legs and for her agility the halfling is not quite fast enough to avoid the attack which clouts her hard in the stomach, nearly winding her through her leathers. Fortunately for the halfling the salamander seems to respect her attackers enough not to follow through with a grab.

Acrobatics rolls the wrong way round unfortunately.

Having a late one at work tonight although I'll try and update the map when I get home. Hopefully I've indicated positions clearly although need a space for Khalid (assuming D,8 unless he says otherwise where Linah gives him cover from Thratnias). Wounded and still testing his foe's defences in turn, Sajan's aggresive movements slow as he focuses on his defence. His final blow is nevertheless coated with frost. He takes a careful step back towards his allies, hoping to draw his foe onto land by yielding his high ground advantage.

AC30 with a ki point spent (fighting defensively). May not make a difference as Dan loves high rolling on Sajan but odds are she should miss :P.

Sajan's trade between defense and offense seems to pay off as monk and salamander trade a series of lightning fast blows. What the monk thinks is a solid hit is met by an invisible shield a few feet from the creature's body but the fist fighter has the presence of mind to switch his momentum and land a solid kick with the spear-wielder still slightly off-balance. AC 21 is a hit.

His next few blows are far from scoring but the last is only a feint. As the salamander moves right, the monk moves in concert landing a perfectly placed left straight. The blow itself lacks the monk's usual power but a strong blast of cold clearly pains the creature while he takes the opportunity to back up.

Linah, Zeladiel, Grall. Note Thratnias has used her AOO, whether she has combat reflexes...

Dan, I am actually in -F12. I 5' there last round before I took my TWO shots. Yeah for some reason I was thinking that a +5 BAB gave me two attacks :) brain fart....
Waiting for the two others to go before I state my action.

Is B/11 enough land for me to stand on?

OK. Sajan is in B,10, Grall in F,12.

I'm counting B,11 as land.

"Actually Nuveril, we came here to talk to them and they ambushed us. Like Lesaar, Andgronakraks obviously wants Thratnias dead too."
Zeladiel shapes a quick square with his hands and a pit opens up under Thratnias.

create pit (c10,c11,d10,d11: Ref DC16)

Linah can equip her shield as part of a move. She can also 5' step, equip her shield as a move and channel. 5' foot stepping avoids AOO's (from the move not the shield equip) so she probably wants to do that.

For create pit, Thratnias is currently in the lava. I think you need a surface to place the pit on do you not (if not anything under it: the spell description uses the deck on a ship example)? I don't think you could stick it on the the top of water and pit anything swimming in it for instance. I'll have a look but barbarian flamebrother seems like an eligible target (although you probably want to avoid dumping Khalid in there as well :) )/

Male HP(104/104 or 125*/125*) Gnoll Barbarian 7 - Invulnerable Rager

Plus since the pit would have lava sides Thratnias could just swim out of the side of it...

Need Zeladiel's amended action but will proceed with Linahs.

Linah's hasty channel washes over herself, Khalid, Nuveril and Sajan healing those wounded. Looking considerably better following that and Khalid's ministrations the doughty priestess draws her heavy shield.

Happy for Grall to wait for Zeladiel.

Zeladiel makes a complex motion with his other hand.

"Thratnias!"

"Since it is Lesaar who wants you dead, my suggestion is you ignore us and go attack him instead.

suggestion (Will DC17)

After a great deal of thought I'm going to apply a -2 penalty to Thratnias's save for this clever suggestion. It taps right into her dislike of Lesaar fanned into absolute hatred by the mephit's tale telling. Her plan was to kill you all horribly then go deal with him. Save to be made seperately...

Feeling his haste enchantment start to fade away, Zeladiel races along the wall until he is in range to unleash his potent enchantment on the salamander leader.

Whatever he says seems to affect Thratnias profoundly. She breaks off combat for a moment and starts to nod her head as if in acquiesence. For just a moment you think she will succumb to the elf's magic. But only for a moment. Her nod turns into a shake of disgust and she speaks for the first time in heavily accented common.

I will rip the traitor apart with my teeth but only when I am done with you! Throw down your weapons and ssubmit and I will sspare your livess and allow you to leave unmolessted. You may even watch as I deal with Lesssar! The salamander sounds as if she means it.

Grall will delay to just after Thranitas...

The flamebrother appears to be heeding little but the desire to drop the enemies in front of it. It pursues Linah doggedly, slithering up sidewise to Khalid (E,9) and unleashing a flurry of blistering attacks with spear and tail. The priestess does her level best to defend, working shield and scimitar as fast as she ever has. The salamander's attacks are relentless and she takes a number of shallow gashes before the salamander manages to land a powerful clubbing blow to the face with its tail. With one of the priestess's eyes filling with blood the salamander launches what surely would be a disabling strike, a low thrust to the knee that Linah somehow, somehow manages to get her shield around fast enough to intercept.

Tail Slap vs Linah 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (16) + 9 = 25 hit

Thratnias appears to have either required instantaneous response to her demand for surrender or intends to continue attacking at least until you do. Hissing, she launches a blistering assault on Sajan, apparently with the hope of dropping him and then Nuveril before Grall can enter the fray or Zeladiel can work more harmful magic. In dint to Sajan's obvious defensive stance her attacks are more measured than before. The monk defends with skill and determination but still takes several painful cuts, each hit enhanced by the slamander's shocking weapon.

Shocking Shortspear vs Sajan 1d20 + 15 ⇒ (19) + 15 = 34 hit
1d6 + 5 + 1d6 ⇒ (5) + 5 + (3) = 13

Moving swiftly to take advantage, the salamander cuts right to Sajan's left, slithering up onto the island (B,11). With her left hand she flings the javelin, the resulting lightning bolt blasting into Sajan and Nuveril at point blank range. 5d6 ⇒ (2, 4, 2, 4, 6) = 18 damage, DC 14 Reflex save to halve/evade. This is a ranged throw attack for all intents and purposes so I think that provides Sajan with an AOO.

Not yet done, Thratnias continues to attack Sajan, leaning in close to bite at him while attacking again and again with her tail. The attacks are ferociously fast yet she fails to anticipate the effect of his ki, the monk sliding gracefully aside from her bite as if he anticipated the attack and managing to block or deflect the tail without further injury.

Its been some pretty patchy rolling from team good. Grall I have your last noted hp total as 33/80, assume thats right. Don't think Sajan's AOO can affect the resolution of Grall's action so I'll proceed.

Even without the aid of magic Grall easily clears the distance over to the island. With the combined weight of the four of you the slab of rock tips noticeably, although thankfully you seem in no current danger of over turning it. His tiredness shows in his somersault though, the tumble exposing him to an attack from the salamander's deadly tail. The strike isn't particularly co-ordinated, but in the gnoll's state it is just enough to clip him hard in the shoulder. With three enemies still to contend with the salamander again doesn't seem confident enough to go for a grab.

Khalid and Nuveril (don't forget reflex) to close out the round. I think I can confirm that Linah is on -1hp and down. Note Thratnias is now on land so no higher ground.

Edit sorry little bit more bad news. I seem to constantly mess up Thratnias's spear damage even with herolab as I keep converting back from two-handed. Correct damage modifier is 2d6 + 6 including the +1 from her shortspear. That is 1 more point to Sajan. If I miss this again I swear I'll let you go with what I posted.

Sajan can feel the salamander's magical shield impeding his strike but the force of the kick is just enough to penetrate, his foot connecting solidly with the salamander's head (if not with his usual force).

Am I reading the map wrong, or doesn't Nuveril get an AoO when Thratnias leaves C 10? Or does it count as a 5-foot-step, even though she has to climb up?

Reflex save 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (13) + 6 = 19

Also, is there anywhere Nuveril can move to that she actually gets an attack from, or did she just get lured out onto the island to take lots of damage and never get a chance to swing? I can't really see C 10 but if Thratnias was just attacking from the lava there, there can't be enough island to stand on?

I'm counting it as a five foot step which I think is consistent with my approach to date. A,11 is more or less half island, half lava. Applying the benefit of the doubt rule, its OK to stand on.

Nuveril manages to sidestep the brunt of the javelin's effect, although electricity crackles through her hair. Sajan retaliates, having come off the exchange with Thratnias and the javelin lightly and no longer stood alone. He focuses his attacks on her, infusing the last blow with the same ice that has frequently coated his hand for much of the past several seconds.

1d8 + 6 + 2d6 ⇒ (2) + 6 + (3, 1) = 12 (Extra 2 damage from sucky cold dice)

If you look at one of the previous maps C10 is pretty lavary and as you say the salamander was swimming there. I'll treat this as a move to A,11 which doesn't end up disadvantaging you.

Khalid's blistering offense turns the flamebrother's spear out of alignment and the inquisitor sinks Tempest deep into the salamander's belly, the magical weapon piercing smoothly through the creature's hard scales. The blade comes back out with a fountain of viscous black blood. It doesn't take a detailed knowledge of salamander anatomy to realise the wound is lethal, yet the salamander continues to fight, its body feeding off the last of its rage. Slightly more cold damage would have done it unfortunately.

Moving behind Sajan and scooting around Grall, Nuveril enters the fray, using her size to her advantage and chopping low at the salamander with her hammer while Sajan and Grall engage her high. Thratnias stumbles very slightly and the halfling is quick to take advantage, landing a solid hit to the creature's side with her hammer.

Not a problem. It thankfully hasn't been needed a lot but I'd usually prefer you stick your stabilization roll in spoilers as technically the group doesn't know whether your safe or bleeding to death :) Not a big deal though.

Thratnias looks sharply at Grall but your not sure whether or not she has been tempted by his ruse.

Zeladiel recasts his speed enchantment, re-invigorating most of the group.

For a single dreadful moment Khalid thinks the dying flamebrother is going to plunge its spear into the fallen Linah but luckily (relatively) the creature turns its attentions to him instead. In a ferocious assault the salamander hits the inquisitor squarely with its tail, slamming him back against the wall and while the inquisitor desperately seeks space to move, he takes deep gashes to arm, thigh and chest. He is left bleeding heavily if not yet out of the fight.

Thratnias does not back down. Perhaps she realises her power is broken regardless or is simply too stubborn to believe she can be beaten by the six of you. She does turns her attentions first to the heavily wounded Grall, her spear a spinning blur of motion, the shaft takes his feet from under him and the salamander hisses with delight as she thrusts the shar point into his side, releasing a jolt of electricity that leaves the mighty barbarian unconscious.

She sends the spear screaming sidewise at Sajan, slightly off-balance from his own offensive flurry. He blocks the first thrust, and then a second but the third breaks his guard, slicing a long gash down his chest. The monk still stands but its clear to all he couldn't take another similar blow. The salamander leans in to bite at the fist fighter but Sajan pushes her back before the attack gets close.

Her tail seems to waver between Sajan and Nuveril before lashing out at the halfling, the creature seemingly trying to remove as many enemies as possible before your counter attack. The halfling is not ready to be taken out of the fight so quickly though, keeping her centre of gravity basically at the ground she drives back hard with her madu, thwarting the attack.

Clearly in pain but determined to finish Thratnias, Sajan attacks, fueled by his intense focus and ki and moving even faster with Zeladiel's enchantment on him.

HP: 49/49 AC: 22 Init: +6 Kelishite Human Inquisitor 7

Badly injured, Khalid spits out a bit of blood before attacking the salamander with a flurry of quick slashes from Tempest...

Destruction Judgement still active.

Attack:1d20 + 8 + 1 ⇒ (8) + 8 + 1 = 17 (haste)
Damage:1d6 + 5 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 5 + 2 = 11 + 1d6 ⇒ 1 x 1.5 cold = 12 Total

Haste Attack:1d20 + 8 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 8 + 1 = 10 (haste)
Damage:1d6 + 5 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 5 + 2 = 13 + 1d6 ⇒ 6 x 1.5 cold = 22 Total

And the dice go stone cold as expected...

Following his attacks, the inquisitor switches the focus of his Judgement to protection...

Swift Action, +2 AC

Hey, I am supposed to be sucking up all of the bad rolls this combat, stay off my turf!

I believe the history of this campaign will show that it was my turf first.

Khalid goes for a quick kill but with its insides on the verge of spilling out the salamander manages to block his attacks, keeping him pinned against the wall and unable to launch effective strikes. AC 18!

The flamebrother grins hideously, seemingly on the verge of taking two of the group down with it.....

Nuveril is up.

I wanted to favourite this more than once, alas, I cannot. Well I have 32 damage with Thratnias' name on it if Nuveril doesn't take her down- and if she does they are going to the flamebrother.

Sajan's damage was one of two things (1) very close but not quite dropping her and (2) just dropping her. I will not reveal which it was until Nuveril and Zeladiel take their actions :)

Edit: Just realised Nuveril is going to have to trust Zeladiel to take care of the flamebrother if she doesn't do it herself. Horror!

Female Halfling Barbarian (superstitious) 7 | hp 72/72 (86/86 raging)

Nuveril is raging so is actually required to save vs. haste :( (And I just realized I'm probably going to roll higher on this damned Fort Save than my attack. And then I'm going to max out the damage die.) Fort 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (19) + 13 = 32

Feeling an arcane influence wash over her in her rage, Nuveril instinctively shrugs it off before turning her attention to the salamander. Rage; Hammer 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (10) + 9 = 19 damage 1d6 + 8 ⇒ (5) + 8 = 13 Madu 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (13) + 8 = 21 damage 1d3 + 5 ⇒ (3) + 5 = 8

Within 1 point of calling the rolls. Thirteen points of damage wasted! Stop casting spells on her!

The distraction the unexpected magic provided proves fatal, as focussing her energy on resisting the spell prevents her from following through on her attacks.

I should have said I will resolve Sajan's action after Nuveril's. Not trying to draw things out but will post after current work emergency.

Thratnias manages to sweep aside Nuveril's distracted attacks a bit of swagger returning to her movements with the halfing's inability to wound her and the success of her ally.

Round 9

She starts to spit out something mocking but doesn't get the chance to finish. Sajan hits her with a left almost too fast to follow, chaining into a flurry of punches to the face and neck. The salamander slides back and the monk stamps on her tail, holding her in place while he hits her again with a frost punch. Stepping forward, he rips the spear out of her stunned hands, reverses it and drives the iron barb almost straight through her chest. A spark of electricity escapes from the salamander's mouth as she falls to the stone dying.

Counted up the damage a few times to make sure. That was 45 hp from the last round. Zeladiel is up then flamebrother, Khalid, Nuveril.

Round 9/12a

Zeladiel points at the Flamebrother and a force dart thuds into its broken body.

force dart damage 1d4 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 2 = 5

He steps back from the lava (-C10 -> -D10) and studies the surface for the last creature. "There's still that other one... and that." He points at Andgronakraks.
