Balek is about 35' from the monster. Too far to get there fast. But no human should be pig-demon fodder. Spear in hand, he moves cautiously across the floor, hoping to get close enough to either threaten the monster or protect Felice.

Osei will start making his way towards Felice, after he hears her voice. He was given a charge, and doesn't really feel like being haunted by the spirit of a vengeful diabolist ...

If/when he notices the demon, he will call out to his teammates and fire a bolt at the beast to draw it off of Felice - since she is the closest.

Cold Iron Bolt: 1d8 ⇒ 3

So, two people took shots at the thing (both missed), and Balek is moving closer to it.

1) You don't know the DC on the Knowledge check. (Sometimes I'll put it under a spoiler, but not always.) Good form is to roll it and then say "if that made it, I do X, otherwise I do Y".

2) Diplomacy takes a full minute. Everybody always gets this wrong, so it's not just you. But that's how it works. Otherwise, you could build specialized "face" characters who could turn a charging dragon friendly with a single roll.


In this particular case, the DC is higher than 19. (And before y'all start metagaming and freaking out, note that rare or unusual monsters get higher DCs.) That said, if you still want to offer to parley with the thing (even not knowing what it is) I'll allow it. Do you?

Balek waits, edging a little closer to Felicia if he can. He knows it's probably a demon, but is not eager to begin the fight when everyone is so badly wounded. It might not be hungry.

Still, he stares intently at it, trying to judge its motives and anticipate its actions.

SGC will talk to anything, all day long, if it means that the wounded can be gathered to safety, such as a narrow passageway....and so the others can heal or prepare...

The thing sees you.

It lets out a shriek of hatred and stumbles forward, arms raised, to attack.


Difficult terrain, half movement -> it moves 20' towards Takka and Sir Constantine and 15' towards everyone else. It is now standing directly adjacent to Felice! But it doesn't seem to have noticed her yet.

Anyone who can beat an Init of 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (17) + 1 = 18 can act this round. (And if anyone wants to set up an initiative macro, I'll be much obliged.)

Balek will take an attack of opportunity if he gets one, but it looks like he got blindsided by the negotiation/fighting attempts.

There is a time for war, and a time for peace. Which one is it today?

Meanwhile, he's trying not think of what must be happening above them in Kenabres...

If it still gets around to his initiative, he'll attack the demon if it's possible:

Longspear +1: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4 for 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 1 = 6

If he can't get in range, and the demon is still up, he'll channel energy for 1d6 ⇒ 4. (Yes, it heals the demon, but healing all of us is more important.

Assuming Osei is in range of Sir Constantine (30'), he will cast Arcane Bond Enlarge Person on him. If he is not in range, a move action (attempting to approach within 30' of Sir Constantine, but keep the fiend away from himself), then casting Enlarge Person.

Technically, Osei tied the creature.

Okay, Takka is not acting this round. Let's say he's still caught up in misery and introspection.

Felice is freezing in place and trying not to attract the creature's attention. I'll treat this as a Stealth check with -2 on the roll for circumstances. 1d20 + 3 - 2 ⇒ (13) + 3 - 2 = 14

Does the creature spot her? 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (12) + 1 = 13 Oooh, it just barely does not.


Okay, then. The thing's piggy little eyes narrow with hatred. It lets out a grating hiss. Since Sir Constantine is nearby and talking, it focuses on him. It moves forward -- it has a sort of odd, slinking gait, strangely graceful for such a big clumsy-looking creature -- and aims a powerful blow at the paladin.

1d20 ⇒ 6 Apparently it's still a bit disoriented from the fall -- it flails ineffectively, clutching at air. That's okay, it swings again!

Activating the Shield spell is a standard action. You can't do that and attack on the same round.

That attack roll hit. Do you want to keep the damage? Or do you want to activate your shield spell instead, and give up the roll?

Smiting actually makes all the difference here, because the creature had exactly 10 hp left. So instead of being staggered, it drops!

Osei makes his way across the rubble, to to the side of Takka and Constantine's. "Well done, Sir Constantine. Your faith serves you well - smiting an Abyssal spawned half-Babau is no small feat." Osei nods to the corpse of the fiend.

The wizard then approaches Felice and crouches at her side to assess the damage to her leg. "Lady Felice - can you move your leg at all?"


She tries, but her face twists with pain. "No..."

Has anyone in the party got ranks in Heal?

BTW, the damaged thing was a half-fiend / half-ogre. That's about CR 4, meaning a tough fight for you at the best of times. I ruled that it was knocked down to 10 hp and had the Shaken condition from the fall, but even so and it could have killed any one of you with a single good hit.

There are times when negotiating or talking with the bad guys is totally appropriate! However, there are also times when correct play is to hit first, fast, hard, and without warning. Figuring out which is when is of course part of the fun.

"Don't attempt to move your leg overly much. We'll find a way to free and mobilize you." Osei puts his hand on Felice's shoulder and gives an encouraging squeeze. He stands and looks to Haruka, watching her closely, asking a clarifying question here and there as she analyzes Felice's situation.

Aid Another (Heal): 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5

When he realizes that he's not much help, but notes that he wants to read about anatomy and healing when he returns to the Blackwing, Osei stands and looks around the cavern. Perception: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4 He quickly traces symbols in the air and refreshes the four globes of dancing light hovering near the ceiling.

Balek considers helping Haruka, but seeing her clever competence, decides not to interfere. Do what you do best, for the good of all. Do not do what someone else is doing better.

Once the creature is obviously dead, and seeing that everyone is still badly wounded, he channels energy again. "Aid us with your strength, Hunter of the Stag, that we may hunt again, and escape our foes, and defend all those who depend on us."

Channel energy for 1d6 ⇒ 3

Then he checks to see if Takka is well, or if some other effect has paralyzed him.


Everyone add 3 hp, and Balek mark off that channel.

Across the cavern, Laurine has picked up the small fragment of green glowing stone and is staring at it intently.

Some distance away, a voice is still saying, "Hello? I hear you talking, but I can't see anyone. I fell.. I'm hurt. Can you hear me? Hello?"

Ahhh - so many people around - I forgot about these two - thanks for the reminder. Does this voice sound familiar to any of us?

Felice closes her eyes as you grasp her leg, and goes very white as you reset the bone. She does not cry out, though. You are able to fashion a crude splint and a crutch from the rubble and some rags.

With help, she'll be able to walk... slowly.

Alderman Gwerm staggers out of the darkness. His clothes are torn and he looks rather wild-eyed. He turns around to look at first Sir Constantine, then Osei, and finally Balek. "What! You! Where... where are we? Who is responsible for this?" He grabs your arm. "You! I demand to be taken to Lord Hulrun at once!"
