"The singers.."

This side chamber is the same size as the last few, a rough oval, about 50' x 60', with an arched ceiling about 60' above. Someone put some effort into finishing it, though; the walls are made of dressed stone instead of the crudely piled boulders you've seen so far. A faint glow, roughly equivalent to moonlight, suffuses the chamber; low light vision will work fine, but darkvision is cancelled.

There are some side niches or small chambers coming off the large main chamber, but it's impossible to see what (if anything) they contain without going further inside.

The floor is dressed stone but with a number of low, rectangular stones sticking a few inches up. If you were walking, it would be a somewhat difficult surface to run or maneuver over.

In the center of the chamber are three strange structures. It looks like they are roughly D-shaped, each about 7' tall, and made of some sort of elaborately carved wood. You can't see any detail from here.

Floating about 30' up in the air are the singers.

The singers drift very slowly through the air, turning in a dreamy circle. They look like women dressed in long, elaborate flowing dresses. They seem to be the source of the light; they are glowing, giving off a cool phosphorescent radiance. You can't make out details of their faces or clothing, though, unless you come closer.

They sing. Sometimes one sings alone for a few bars or a short passage, then another. Then two or all three of them will harmonize. The music is achingly beautiful, and terribly sad.

[If you speak elvish, you can make a DC 25 Linguistics check. Otherwise the song is completely incomprehensible.]

He then listens to the song attempting to understand the annoying elvish words.

Linguistics: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (15) + 13 = 28

The Judge only:

It's an archaic and highly stylized version of the dialect of the Ice Elves. The singing seems to be part of a long and complicated ballad telling a story about three elven princesses.

Students of ice elven history might be aware of this particular ballad! For everyone else, it would require a DC 30 Knowledge [history] check to recognize it.

Bunch of dead Ice Elves. Very old tongue. Sounds like an annoying ballad about three ice queens. Not quite as interesting, and far more painful, than ripping your ears off.

Using reources to defeat and enemy isn't really a waste. I can air walk a couple of people in the group if needed to fight them in the air.
We are going to be fighting a flying dragon so it may be needed anyways.

Lets make a quick decision and we can move in on them. Dren will cast two airwalks on the ground fighters if needed, Edmin and Jax.

Judge and Edmin: they're incorporeal undead, and fairly powerful ones. Elves don't become undead as often as other humanoids; when they do, they tend to be weird and dangerous.

Up to you all, I hate splitting the party, but I am sure the Judge is best equipped to deal with three powerful undead. The rest of you can shoot at them from distance. The last thing we need is for people to be drained levels before we fight a dragon.

Wow, Ulp, that is some cray-cray. Not sure how it would work against things with no Con score... I guess you just don't use anything Con-based.

The Judge just walks into the chamber.

The singing quite abruptly halts. The three floating women turn in obvious surprise. Now that you're closer, you can see that they're slightly transparent, and also that they show obvious signs of their undead nature: their faces are haggard and rotting, their fine dresses torn and stained with decay.

Two of them wear white dresses and one wears blue. Blue Dress points a clawed finger at you. Her voice echoes spectrally in your mind.

(Who speaks Elvish? If more than two of you, I won't bother with spoilers.)

Elvish:

"Who disturbs our singing? What gauche dullard interrupts the Ballad?"

"It lives! Kill it!" shrieks one of the ones in white.

"It... does not live. It is crude and ugly, but it does not live, sister." Blue Dress turns back to the judge, her aristocratic face set in a fine haughty sneer. "Well, what then, boy? Are you a messenger of that ridiculous dragon? Or have you come to offer us tribute or service? If the former, you should know that we care nothing for gold or silver!"

"Fear," murmurs White Dress One.

"Beauty," White Dress Two hisses.

"If service," she waves a hand haughtily, "go and kill those absurd molluscs down the hall. They have interrupted our music, and they are ugly. Once you have done that, if you are clean and well behaved you may come back and listen quietly."

I traded their lives for information. Although I doubt the information will be of any value. I can always find them and fry their sorry corpses if necessary.

As to whom I am, I am the Judge. Chief Justice of this land and devoted servant of the Prince of Laws. I was once known by other names. But now all simply know of me as the Judge, most speak even this title with fear and apprehension.

As for ancestry, I have none. My parents were slovenly servants of the fallen Sun God. My mother died in child birth and my father, weak willed fool that he was, took his life shortly thereafter. The blood in my veins is that of Lord Varnith, who rule the lands to the south for centuries before being destroyed a little more than a century ago.

He then looks back to the ghosts.
And, you are the three princesses. Ladies of noble blood, rulers of the ice elves.

Once more the Judge smiles inwardly:

Elvish:

If you have not been wronged, then why remain in this dark cave surrounded by mollusks and dragons you clearly despise. While you have managed maintain your elvish beauty, this is clearly not where I would expect to find three lovely elvish princesses. In a forest perhaps, or, for ice elves such as yourselves, perhaps in the pine forests which cover this northern tundra, not in a dark cavern.

So, I ask you again. Is there something that I can do? Something that perhaps I should ask the dragon, to help free you to return to the land and people you formerly ruled. I have spent many years among the living, I understand their self centered ways. I know how to use them as the tools they are. But you all, three gifted spirits as your are. For you, I offer my assistance so that you may find your final justice.

Elvish:

"Justice?"

"Justice?"

"Justice?"

They seem very agitated now.

"What is justice!"

"There was no justice!"

"There is no justice!"

They're swirling around in the air like agitated bats.

"There is only vengeance!"

"Vengeance on all that can love!"

"Vengeance on all that live!"

"The living! They must suffer!"

"The living must suffer!"

"The living shallsuffer!"

For those of you who don't speak Elvish -- the three intangible females seem very agitated and upset. They're flying around in circles up near the stone ceiling now.

The Judge continues to respond, unfazed by the princesses agitation.

Elvish:

Then make them suffer. Leave this frozen waste and bring your wrath upon the living. Why remain here when the only living are mollusks and crusty old dragons? Leave this place and see that your vengeance is done.

If you are held here, then tell me what must be done that you may be free.

"This is why we do not let the Judge go off by him self. Stand ready, we may have to kill these dead skanks."

Sense Motive DC 22 for Judge or 32 for anyone else:

Though intelligent, the sisters are bound here for some reason. Attempting to talk them around will only remind them of their damnation and upset them, probably to the point where they attack.

Elvish:

"Silence! Your presence is no longer required!"

"You annoy us!"

"You offend us!"
