"If the tramp had lived, it would have kept him off the throne... but she died, leaving behind two small daughters, allowing Markadian to marry again. His second wife was a princess of the blood, and thus he was able to advance his ridiculous claim to the throne.

"So, Sir Varin is of the Victor's blood, and a second cousin to our current dear Majesty. But he's twice barred from the throne, being of illegitimate and Salic descent. He's wisely stayed far from the capital anyway, though of course both he and the King pretend the most devoted cousinly amity. In any event he's little more than a hedge knight himself, a half-impoverished scion who's made a threadbare career in the military. Blood will tell."

Further investigate some locations, Archives, the Cathedral, and other areas with Jax or Dren.

Use the library of the Barons for what we can use, aid Ulp.

Prepare scrolls requested by the party.

See if we can find out if we can ally ourselves with another noble in Farholde, in the guise as adventures.

Request magical items made.

Cement further alliance with the Baron, use his network to keep an eye on Elise.

When last seen in the cutscene, Nimpy was headed straight for the capital. (To be fair, none of you PCs would have any way to know that.)

As noted, children of the Victor's two older daughters are doubly barred from the succession -- both because the marriage was morganatic and because female descent. (There's also a school of thought that holds they should be additionally barred because of porphyrogeniture, as when they were born the Victor was neither King, heir apparent, nor heir presumptive. However, this view is not currently favored.) The daughters had eight adult children and more than twenty grandchildren between them, so there are actually quite a lot of Talirean aristocrats in Sir Varin's place -- cousins once removed and second cousins of the King. These people are sometimes called puisne-Darians (little Darians). This is vulgar, and it would be a bit rude to say it to their faces, but it's a convenient term.

However, the issue of female descent is being discussed again, as the current King is the only legitimate surviving male heir of the house of Darius. (There were two cadet branches, but both went extinct in this generation.) The King has but a single daughter, Belinda, who is just approaching marriageable age. Markadian is still in vigorous good health and could easily rule another 20 or 30 years, but people are starting to get a little thoughtful. Certainly he has shown no interest in remarrying.

As far as can be told, Markadian seems to intend that Belinda take the throne. This would not be too strange by itself; male-preference cognatic primogeniture is pretty much the standard in Talingarde. However, the political reality is that unless Belinda is an extraordinarily strong character, she'll have trouble ruling alone. So speculation about her marriage is becoming a staple of aristocratic gossip.

This slightly implicates both the Baron and Sir Varin, because while they're both unlikely candidates, they're both the *kinds* of people who are on the shortlist -- either a Barcan (cementing the dynasty's claim) or a puisne-Darian (keeping it in the family). Realistically, a Barcan is probably unlikely because (1) King Markadian shares the traditional Darian low opinion of the family's ancient rivals, and (2) his opinion is, objectively, well founded: most of the Barcans are, in fact, arrogant, stupid, inbred incompetents. But on the other hand, none of the puisne-Darians are looking like prizes right now either, and politics can make for strange bedfellows.

She would also determine what magic Trik is carrying and if he has any spells on his person.

Trik has a couple of magic items but no active spells AFAYCT. There's nobody and nothing invisible around.

There is a secure area but you don't know if it has archives. (It could be their treasure vault, or contain holy relics, or whatever.) Note that you'd have to get past some guards and at least one seriously locked door, plus whatever might be inside.

Well, of course those stories are purely for amusement, with no Easter eggs or foreshadowing or anything.

Quote:

Is that a Knowledge History or Religion?

[rolling offscreen]

The tedious history of the Saint is annoyingly well known. She was one of the earlier Mitran saints, back before the sun-worship had taken over the island, and she claims to have been much persecuted by the Church of Asmodeus. While defeating the ice devil was her greatest exploit, she was involved in various other irritating and trivial adventures, all set down at exhausting length by her legion of admirers.

(Remember the blue-robe monk? Make her a lot more powerful and even more insufferable, and you have the late Saint Cynthia-Celeste.)

Her next-to-last bit of business was founding the Order. The Order was small back when the Victor came through, but has grown hugely under the patronage of the current royal dynasty; this is the main chapterhouse, but there are several smaller houses around the kingdom. Her last action was to participate in the consecration of the Vale of Valtaerna. The Vale had long been sacred to many faiths, but the Mitrans claimed it as their own and gradually edged all others out; the Saint was a key player in this. She was buried in the Vale at first but brought back to Farholde shortly before the end of the Victor's reign. Her body is supposedly incorruptible, and is displayed on certain holy days, helping to make Farholde a regional center of religious pilgrimage.

"Well, does yours have the temper thing? Ours has the temper thing." Trik runs a finger thoughtfully around the edge of his wine glass. "Elise is extremely intelligent and, you know, you have to respect her paranoia. It's what kept us alive. More than once I thought our cover had been blown, but she always had a backup scheme.

"But on the other hand, the paranoia never ever stops. So, you have to be constantly alert and watchful. Like right now, for instance? She doesn't know that we're talking, I don't think. With the Baron

"You said I was the 3rd most wanted person in the kingdom, who are the top 2?"

Zimu's research:

You've been inspired to research as much as you can about the Mother of Monsters. The Baron's library for demonology is pretty limited -- his paranoia prevents him from keeping any really interesting stuff around. However, there is a Book of the Enemies of Mitra, an advanced text normally only available to Inquisitors and demon-hunting paladins. Ownership of this would be a serious misdemeanor, but not the sort of thing that would send a man like the Baron to jail.

There's one short entry about Vetra-Kali: "Vetra-Kali, also known as the Eater of Eyes and the Lord of Seven Pestilences. Cultists wore black robes and dwelt in a wilderness place. Cult completely extirpated in Talingarde by Markadian I." It's accompanied by a small symbol of a partially eclipsed sun, which is how the book says "there may or may not be further information, but if there is, you'll have to ask a very senior Inquisitor."

The section on the Mother is a lot longer, presumably because her cult has been active in Talingarde on and off since forever. There's some stuff you already knew (Chaos, Evil, Madness, Strength, Trickery; considers all other gods enemies) and a lot of discussion of how to identify cultists (scars, bizarre "birthmarks" and deformities are good, though they may be hidden under clothing... and here the late Captain Odenkirk's strange chest markings come to mind). There's an evil artifact called the Skull of Mashaag that went missing a couple of centuries back, supposedly lost somewhere in the North, and some discussion of particular spells her casters like to use. But then there's this bit:

"Pictures of the Mother portray her as a jackal-headed woman with a third vertical eye in the center of her forehead, heavily pregnant, with feathered wings, a snake's tail, and taloned feet... Her numberless spawn are said to vary greatly, in appearance, in power and in temperament. However, almost all her children bear some mark of similarity to her through at least part of their life cycle: either wings, or a serpent's tail, or three eyes."

And that's about all you're going to find in the Baron's library.

Well, a gnome played a flute in a bar. You would have collected a few coins from it, as per the Perform skill. As noted, a pretty lady smiled at you -- she seemed to be a fellow performer, albeit one a lot more musically talented than you.

Otherwise, nothing happened. I mean, you don't automatically get three bar fights, two mysterious hooded strangers, four saucy wenches and a wizard offering you a job every time you go into a bar. You could go trolling for rumors but (1) you'd have to say so, and (2) in PF that's a Cha-based check, so you'd be about as likely to get yelled at as to find anything good.

Since no one took Ulp up on potions or other alchemical items, after he finishes his potion for Edmin ulp decides to do some aerial reconnaissance. He takes an invisibility extract and takes to the air. he can only be in the air for 6 minutes (though it can be broken into minute increments so he can land on top of things and view and take another invis if needed) so he will do this methodically each day going a diff direction to see if there is anything interesting.

Cуровую continues her research until it is nearly dawn.

There were a few answers but more questions now than she started with.

How is the Mother of Monsters tied to this daemon Vetra-Kali? Was the Seventh Knot in league with the demon queen?

It was not enough that Cуровую had to look over her shoulder to see if a demon sage was watching only to find that ever scheming dear cousin Elise right behind her, now this. How many players were still waiting to reveal themselves in this Game the cardinal was playing? And how did this all connect to the woman who was corresponding with the captain?

DM

Spoiler:
With that Nat 20 on Vetra-Kali, would there be anything Cуровую could ask in game terms from DM? Possible abilities and powers?

Don't be greedy. nat 20s are nice, but they don't mean you get answers to everything.

Jax smiles at the mention of Raisa. "Ah..yes, she's an excitable girl. She took a liking to our dear, departed Xenfal. That was too bad really, I liked him. you said you met the seventh? Do you think any of them could have survived their doomed expedition?"

"Truly, no idea!" Trik shakes his head sadly. "But as I think about it... I doubt it. The earlier versions of the Seventh having failed, the Cardinal built this one around Sister Serafina. The idea was to make the most effective possible team. Which apparently they were; they tore through the Cardinal's tests in record time. You know how Zargo was running one challenge? Apparently Serafina either enchanted him or was just incredibly persuasive. Not only did they pass his challenge, but they had Zargo leading them around as a trapfinder and guide for most of the rest of the test. Apparently he got set on fire near the end, and they had to push him into a pit full of acid to put the fire out..."

He pauses, eyes widening slightly and tail lashing at memories of Sherkov. "That was..an interesting scenario. I'd almost forgotten about Sherkov..him and Zargo and Tiadora are of the First then?"

"Oh, no. Zargo's a minion! Cardinal Thorn's minion, of course, which means he's powerful enough in his way. But still. You think the Cardinal would bind someone like that into a Knot?" Trik shakes his head. "He's an alchemist, which means he's inevitably going to blow himself up at some point. Figuratively or literally. No, no. A very useful tool, but... just no."

"You said I was the 3rd most wanted person in the kingdom, who are the top 2?"

The Baron arches an elegant eyebrow. "Well, let's see. The Pretender would be first and foremost, I suppose, except that he's no longer in the Kingdom. So that would leave Count Gaspard, the gnome Woddam, Lancelurk the highwayman, and... mm, I suppose we'd have to put the heretic Servetus in there; preaching that you shouldn't pay your taxes unless the authorities are sufficiently virtuous has been enough to keep a kingdom-wide manhunt going for a while now, with a very respectable price on his head." The Baron spreads his hands. "So, upon consideration, fifth then."

Please do not ask your DM about the hideous crimes of Count Gaspard, or why the gnome Woddam is being sought with fire and sword up and down the length of the kingdom. Yes, I know, and yes, you'll find out more if these things ever become relevant. But at some point we have to move away from ever more detailed descriptions of the setting and start actually advancing the plot. Even I have my limits. So, please, just nod and sip some brandy and move on.

He has wings and a flight speed, right?

There's a lot to see, but -- alas -- not anything that seems immediately relevant to your quest. Now, if you were to fly over the Bryr... heck, you even have a map showing where to go.

I am fine with just moving on as well if there was nothing to find.

Dren slips his new cloak onto his shoulders. It is sheer black made of a beautiful fabric, though fairly plain.
The tailor had grumbled at his specifications...no color..what was this world coming too? Dren thought about slicing his head off at that point for his insolence...but no that would cause too many questions.
But Dren had specific plans for this cloak. The magical protections would help him resist the evil effects of creatures in the tower they were going to.

The Brass Rod would be ready in just a few days, this would extend his spells beyond their normal length, then he hoped he would be ready for what awaited them.

Absolutely. I was just trying to figure out if he will kill us on the 1st round or if we can make it to the 6th round. Oh wait, based on previous encounters

He'll kill us all on the surprise round.

Regarding the 1st Knot, I would guess Sir Marcel is one of them too. Also I thought there was a 'hell pack' that Tiadora led.

It's hard to remember all this even when we keep notes, I honestly think DM has some mutant gene of unearthly storytelling.

The Judge will continue to research the woods to the south, and specifically he wants to get the names of people who claim to have seen any of the supposed monsters - the dragon, walking tree, the black squirrel, the half-tiger or the dark lady.

If he gets any good names, he will find them and invite them for an ale to discuss their experience. After all, news from the north does not flow freely to the south, and the Judge has a friend who loves to write books and ballads combining the truth of something like the dragon or were-tiger or killer squirrel with high fantasy to make compelling prose.

He will also ask about any good adventuring in the area. After all, he has a cousin who is part of a group of adventurers who are always looking for new and interesting places to search out. The Judge will let drop that he has heard of a few ruins of great age in the area as well as a few dungeons. He has even heard of some forsaken tower build in a past era. The mention of the tower is always done as though it is an afterthought that the Judge does not believe in, not the target of his inquiry. In effect, he wants whoever he is talking to to have their eyes pop open and immediately correct the Judge that the tower really is real.

Was there anything gathered in response to this? You noted that you would get back to it.

Going to tie up some lose ends in the next few days

The Ship to Farholde

Jax lounged below deck as the ship slowly made its way to their destination.

On this rare occasion he found himself with his one true friend and favorite company, himself.

All alone.

Almost.

Jax's blade was drawn and the tiefling was just about to start a conversation with it when he heard the door behind him open.

The door quickly shut and a shadow appeared in Jax's peripheral vision and the tiefling, reflexes still wary from the assault on Balentyne, jumped up from his seat in a low defensive crouch.

And large object came hurtling at his face.

It blocked his sight for a moment and Jax cursed as he began to call forth a spell.

Until he realized that the object blocking his vision was a rather large, ornate, and completely fabulous hat. One that his friend used to wear.

'He would have wanted you to have this.' Cуровую voice said matter of fact. She held no expression. Yet Jax could swear he heard sadness there.

Jax, blinking twice, then thrice, always ready with a sharp and witty comeback, simply said, 'thanks'.

Cуровую noded, in her hand she twirled a feather that she had taken from the Xen's hat while they were all still in Balentyne, and there was a hint of a smile on her face as she began to leave the cabin.

She paused at the door, 'Don't get yourself killed Jax Naismith. I have nothing to wear that would match that hat.'

And with that, Jax once again, was (almost) alone. But he was now the proud owner of a fabulous hat.

Just reconciling that somehow the hat that Cуровую took got to Jax. While important to her I'm sure it looks better on him anyways.
