Surprise Round - Spiders, Tolenn.
One of the spiders rears up, flailing its arms wildly. A brief moment later, a sheet of webs comes flying toward Pyron with the intent of incapacitating him!
Web Attack vs Touch: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (6) + 5 = 11
Pyron is now wrapped up in webs! The other two spiders rush towards Pyron, greedily clacking their mandibles in anticipation.
Tolenn, you can take a move or a standard.
DM Crispy |
Entangled - The character is ensnared. Being entangled impedes movement, but does not entirely prevent it unless the bonds are anchored to an immobile object or tethered by an opposing force. An entangled creature moves at half speed, cannot run or charge, and takes a –2 penalty on all attack rolls and a –4 penalty to Dexterity. An entangled character who attempts to cast a spell must make a concentration check (DC 15 + spell level) or lose the spell.
Pyron Firehide |
Wednesday Daud |
K, that's what Daud will do on his turn.
Tolenn |
Tolenn's eyes widen as Pyron disappears into the bowels of the ship. From her position she peers down into the hold, seeing the creatures advancing on Pyron.
"Spiders! Big ones, I count 3" she calls out, frowning as she sees Pyron struck by a sheet of webbing.
Surprise Round
Bringing her crossbow to her shoulder , she lets fly....
Attack 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (13) + 2 = 15
Damage 1d10 ⇒ 10
DM Crispy |
Odds?: 1d6 + 0 ⇒ (5) + 0 = 5Odd is 2, even is 3.
Tolenn's crossbow bolt flies true, sinking through the bulbous body of one of the spider's threatening Pyron. The projectile thunks into the bottom of the boat, pinning the creature there as it whips its legs around in agony before curling up and dying like a good spider should.
Surprise Round Summary -
1 Spider shot web at Pyron, successfully entangling him, the other 2 spiders advanced on Pyron.
Tolenn uses her crossbow to put an end to Spider 2.

Vuk initiative: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (15) + 2 = 17
Daud initiative: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (9) + 3 = 12

Round 1 Initiative Order - Spiders, Gaius, Vuk, Tolenn, Pyron, Daud
Actions, please! Wednesday has already stated Daud's action for this turn, and Pyron has stated his standard. Feel free to change, as necessary.
DM Crispy |
Spider 1 advances on the for-now entangled Pyron, intent on helping Spider 3 bring the Oracle down.
Spider 1 Bite: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (19) + 1 = 20
Bite Damage: 1d4 ⇒ 3
Spider 3 Bite: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2
Bite Damage: 1d4 ⇒ 3
Pyron manages to dance around in front of Spider 3 enough to cause it to bite at the wood of the ship, but Spider 1 bites true, sinking its mandibles through Pyron's thin layers of protection to strike the flesh beneath.
Pyron, make a fort save when you state your actions.
Gaius Tindareus |
Can I see the spiders from where I am? I'll include a perception check in case it's needed.
Perception: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (17) + 8 = 25
Gaius uncoils his whip and snaps it at one of the spider's faces, trying to disorient the creature.
Dirty Trick Maneuver--Blind vs CMD, higher ground: 1d20 + 3 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 3 + 1 = 7
Gaius curses the close quarters that don't give him enough room to maneuver. He holds out his loaded crossbow to Tolenn.
Nice shot. Here, this one's loaded.
It's light vs your heavy, but that one takes a standard to reload I believe.
Wednesday Daud |
Unable to get down to Pyron Vuk will simply growl into the darkness beneath them.
For future iniatives would you be ok with both Vuk and Daud going on Daud's iniative or would you rather they be seperate?
Pyron Firehide |
He already rolled a 19 on the strength check.
Fort Save: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 1 = 7
He casts halo. A halo of red and silvery-blue swirls around each other over his head. It still acts as a standard light. Then he takes a 5 foot step away from the spiders.
Pyron Firehide |
Casting halo is a free action. Moving 5 foot step for his move action.
DM Crispy |
Gaius, I am assuming you didn't have your whip out, since you had the crossbow, and you don't have Quick Draw. So drawing the whip and using it would consume your standard and move, and handing Tolenn the crossbow would be another move action. I'll let Tolenn grab the crossbow from you as her move action and then fire as a standard, if that is her inclination.

Yep, I intended to use my move action to draw the whip and standard to attack. I'm holding my crossbow in the other hand, so while I "offered" it to Tolenn IC, I'm still holding it. I just meant she could take it from me as a move and then shoot as a standard. I usually delineate what I'm doing for my move, standard, etc, and I can do that if you prefer.
Like you said, Spell-like abilities are standard action unless they say otherwise. @Pyron--it took your standard to escape, but if you only move 5 ft (5ft step like you wanted), that doesn't actually take up your move action. So if you want to take out a weapon or do some other move action (that isn't you actually moving somewhere) you should still have that option.
Pyron Firehide |
I don't care about the halo, because Pyron has darkvision. Anyway, I think he had it on earlier when he attempted to intimidate the guy who we fought outside the fishery. He should already be wielding his shield and morningstar. I can always have him grab his shield if there was any question regarding the shield.
Edit: see conversation in the discussion forum.
Pyron Firehide |
Pyron uses his move action to create a halo that gives off some light.
Tolenn |
Tolenn drops her crossbow to the planks of the walkway and takes the crossbow offered by Gaius with a smile and a nod to his compliment.
Eyes narrowed she sights on another spider and lets the bolt fly...
Attack 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (12) + 2 = 14
Damage 1d8 ⇒ 4
DM Crispy |
After Gaius attempts to perform a whip trick, a couple more spiders descend the stairs to the right into the hold. Venom dripping from their mandibles, they advance on their quarry, Pyron.
Tolenn accepts the smaller crossbow from Gaius, lines up a shot, and fires true, the spider turkey shoot continuing. Its legs slap ineffectually against Pyron for a few seconds before it collapses to the deck, a bolt through one of its 8 eyes.

Round 1 Summary:
Spiders 1 & 3 bite at Pyron, 1 for some damage and strength drain.
Gaius attempts a whip dirty trip, but the awkward angle is too much to overcome. He then offers his crossbow to Tolenn.
Spiders 4 & 5 enter the picture, surrounding Pyron.
Vuk growls but can do little else.
Tolenn the markswoman brings down Spider 3 with a well-placed bolt.
Pyron escapes his webbing, a halo of light appearing above his head as he tries to put a few feet between himself and the spider menace.
Daud cuts a mooring rope and tosses it into the newly-made hole in the deck, providing a safer route down than the one Pyron took.
---------------------------------------------------
Round 2 Initiative - Spider 1, Gaius, Spiders 4 & 5, Vuk, Tolenn, Pyron, Daud.
Actions, please.
Pyron Firehide |
If Pyron is still conscious after spider one likely advances and attacks Pyron, he will take a five foot step, which means even though the spider on the stairs is in the square next to him, the staircase and railing should provide Pyron what he needs to be able to cast cure light wounds on himself. HP healed: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4
Gaius Tindareus |
I think asking us to post our actions for the round with any possible contingencies taken into consideration for other actions is fine, but one minor thing (since you're looking for feedback)--if any of the monsters/npcs go before us in the round, could you post their actions right after the round recap (the round recap is a great idea, btw)? It will make it easier for us to choose what we want to do. Like, after the round 1 recap if Spider 1 took his turn, I wouldn't have to worry about his turn affecting my turn, you know?
Gaius Round 2
Gaius reaches back and strikes down at one of the spiders with all of the force he can muster.
Whip strike for damage vs Spider 4: 1d20 + 3 + 1 ⇒ (19) + 3 + 1 = 23
Nonlethal damage: 1d3 + 3 ⇒ (2) + 3 = 5
Note about the whip in case it applies here: A whip deals no damage to any creature with an armor bonus of +1 or higher or a natural armor bonus of +3 or higher.
Gaius Tindareus |
Actually, after my attack I'll move to the square left of Tolenn if that's ok. That'll let Daud move up.
DM Crispy |
I thought I had been posting the spider's actions pretty early. I will try to make sure to do that.
Spider 1 hisses menacingly at Pyron as he bulls through the webs. Intent on bringing the prey down, the arachnid launches another wad of webbing at the pressed Oracle.
Web attack vs Touch: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (20) + 5 = 25
Pyron struggles out of his webs only to find himself encased in a fresh volley.
Wednesday Daud |
Confirm for Instant Coccooning!!!! Lol
DM Crispy |
Gaius sets himself a little more squarely, free of the encumbrance of the crossbow, and Crack! goes the whip, striking Spider 4 right behind it's octet of bulbous eyes. Spider 4 drops to the deck, out of its senses.
Spider 4 is unconscious.
Spider 5 advances to Pyron's left, the Oracle's struggles in the web putting the creature in a frenzy. It lunges forward, poison flying from it's mandibles as it attempts to bite.
Spider 5 Bite Attack: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (11) + 1 = 12
Spider 5 has no trouble catching Pyron, clumsy as he is in the webs, but its mandibles can't penetrate the thick layer of hide that thankfully protects the Aasimar from just this sort of situation.
Updated Battle Map, interim Round 2
I believe this map is accurate as of Spider 5's action.
Pyron, let's have another Fort save.
Wednesday Daud |
Vuk laments his days of skipping the Rope Climing Class at Animal Compaion School to hang out with that poodle.
Pyron Firehide |
Kill that spider!fort save: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4
Tolenn |
Looking down, Tolenn doesn't see a clear path by which to descend. Frowning, she reloads Gaius' light crossbow , leans over slightly to target the spider meanacing Pyron and fires once again.
Attack 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (17) + 2 = 19
Damage 1d8 ⇒ 1
Wednesday Daud |
Daud will climb down the rope in order to aid Pyron.
Climb: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 2 = 7
...assuming he doesn't fall and break his neck...
DM Crispy |
There's a wall to brace against, so you're fine.
Pyron, your current strength is 11.
Daud climbs down the rope in order to assist his overwhelmed companion, landing in a thicket of flailing spider legs.
Pyron Concentration Check: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (3) + 5 = 8
Pyron attempts to retreat and use the reprieve to heal the worst of his wounds, but his spell fizzles as the webs impede his movement.
DM Crispy |
Round 2 Summary:
Spider 1 re-entangles Pyron is a nice webby net.
Gaius cracks his whip, sans flowerpot hat, and knocks a spider senseless.
Spider 5 tries to keep the hurt on Pyron, but fails.
Vuk is full of remorse for time ill spent.
Tolenn fires a bolt at Spider 5 and wounds it.
Daud climbs into the hold to assist his companion.
Pyron backs up, looking to heal, but his spell fizzles as he tries to fight his motions through the webs.

Round 3 Initiative: Spider 1, Gaius, Spider 5, Vuk, Tolenn, Daud, Pyron
Gaius Tindareus |
Gaius strikes again with the whip, this time against the unwounded spider.
Standard, attack spider 5
Whip strike for damage vs spider 5: 1d20 + 3 + 1 ⇒ (16) + 3 + 1 = 20
Nonlethal damage: 1d3 + 3 ⇒ (3) + 3 = 6
Satisfied with his strike, he stows his whip, preparing to climb down the rope.
Move--stow whip
Pyron Firehide |
Full defence if any spiders are still active otherwise he'll attempt to do a strength check and move away.
DM Crispy |
Pyron strength check: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (15) + 0 = 15
Pyron again fights his way through the webbing, tearing it apart with his failing muscles as he presses further into the hold, away from the remaining spider.
Pyron Fort Save: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5
Spider Bite Strength Damage: 1d2 + 0 ⇒ (2) + 0 = 2
Pyron continues to feel the venom sap at his strength, leaving him feeling drained after his freedom from bonds is attained.
Pyron's current Strength is 9
