At whichever point he was in on his search, Pyron will run over to Gaius. After listening to him sense motive: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (19) + 6 = 25, he chuckles. You don't have to lie to me. Look, if you believe he wasn't evil and doing all these evil things and let him go, then fine. I am still going to get paid, because we have effectively stopped the problems in the queen's territory. I care about two things: stopping evil people and creatures and getting paid. Now, I am going to finish my search of the property. I am sure I'll find some more interesting things in here than running after that guy. Honestly, I don't think he was a part of the scheme that his hirelings were doing. So, in all reality, we got the true bad guys, not some person who is trying to help feed the people.

With that, he turns and leaves to keep searching the place. If anyone responds, he'll listen and possibly respond, which I can do for him, but he will end up continuing the search of the property.

"Do not try to deceive us, Gaius. If we are to work against evil, there must be trust between us." she says in a soft but intense manner.

Tolenn delivers a soft rebuke to Gaius about lying to his companions.

Pyron rants about getting paid, then continues to search the place for valuables or any implicating documents.

Daud mentions following Verik to his secret love.

Is everyone helping Pyron toss the place, or are some running after Verik? Pyron, not ignoring you, there's just a lot of space to cover, so it would take you a while to thoroughly search everything.

I didn't get a location, only a description. But you can bet those folks will be back here tomorrow for the free food. We can make a suggestion to the queen to take it upon herself to have her people offer free food here as a way to build a better face for the local townspeople. Our perhaps we can use the money to setup a donations organization and install managers with the approval of the queen. We would have the money for that I think. Just a couple of ideas.


Under a water trough in an inside room, the group finds a few bags with 450 gp, 740 sp, and a small bag of assorted jewelry. There is nothing else of value to find.

In addition, on Verik's desk is a stack of seemingly perfectly legitimate transactions involving the purchase of pigs and cows for the slaughterhouse. There is no mention of where the funds come from.

Once they finish searching everything, Pyron would speak to the search group: "Let's split up the money, yes including with the others, sell the jewelry and split the profit from the jewelry, and take the paperwork and the men to the queen. It can be done in any order of course. I just don't want the criminals know that we found the money and are going to keep it. So, if the other guys ask, we can say no for now until we don't have the extra ears to listen to our conversation.

She inclines her head to Gaius to elaborate.

He was a rube, no mastermind at all. His underlings were murderers for hire right under his nose, feeding their victims to the unwitting poor and desperate. These are the savages we have brought you now.

As to Verik's mutiny from the guard, it was no treason but a man driven by lust. He was swayed by a Vudran woman named Vimanda. I don't know her motivations, but I mean to find her and uncover them. If you would have us waste our time trying to find the fool Verik, so be it, but if we lock up all of the dim-witted and lust-filled the dungeons will be at capacity by week's end. Murderers and traitors, that is where I will turn my efforts. Is this acceptable?


The dark-haired woman swings her gaze from Daud to Tolenn, then quickly to Gaius. Her face darkens at the inquisitor's words, she almost snarls. "So you bring me the hired muscle, but not the instigator? What do you think will happen when Verik happens upon his Vudran lover again? The whole point of this exercise was to get him off the streets, since he was having some success converting guards to his unlawful cause!" Cressida scowls, she looks very angry. Her breath heaves as she visibly tries to get herself under control.

After a few moments, she nods. "Still, you have performed a service to the city, nevertheless. Having these murderers off the streets is a desired end unto itself. We can...wait, did you say Vimanda? As in Vimanda Arkona?" That scowl returns in an instant. "This is troubling. The Arkonas are one of Korvosa's more powerful Houses. You are to let me think on this before pursuing it any further, do you understand?"

"As far as payment, it was contingent on the return of Verik, alive or dead. You have failed to provide me with the man. I will pay you 200 gp for the service of getting these thugs off the street." She appraises you with a bit of a glare. "I might have some more work lined up for you, if you think you can follow orders a bit more to the letter this time around. If you are interested, follow me."

Feel free to haggle with her over the payment amount (she promised 500 for Verik dead, 1000 for him alive (and captured)).

Pyron speaks up. Perhaps your grace will see that we did work harder than your average mercenary. We did work hard to get these three men off the streets alive, so that you could interrogate them yourselves. In addition, here is the paperwork that we found at the place to make it easier for your people to sift through to try to find more information that can help you discover who else might be involved, which you can use to also help you with your interrogation of these three murderers.

Second, we have also provided you information that you can use to get more power over the Arkona House. Now that they are knowingly hiding a fugitive from the law, we can offer them the option of turning in the fugitive or turn themselves in for hiding a known fugitive. If they turn in the fugitive, then you can publicly announce that this House has given over a fugitive. This has two positive outcomes: first, it puts pressure on others to give you support as this House has given in their action, and second, it puts pressure on them to continue giving you support as they will now be publicly seen as being in your graces for giving you a fugitive.

However, if they do not return the fugitive, this gives you the opportunity to arrest them and, thereby, taking power from them through the use of the law. This could be used publicly to show that no House is above the law. Either option they choose solidifies more power for you.

If you need a diplomacy roll, his bonus is +8. I didn't roll, because I usually feel that an actual conversation trumps a random roll when a player can't actually come up with something reasonable and decent to say.


"First of all, Pyron, there is only one 'your Grace' in Korvosa, and I am not she. Secondly, I did not say you didn't provide a valuable service, hence why you still get a partial reward. I am saying you didn't provide the service specifically asked of you. If I ask you to go to the market and buy me a fish, and you bring back bread, have you done as I asked?"

She listens to the rest of Pyron's explanation, her brow furrowing. "Our monarch's rule is contested by half the populace already. Death to the Whore Queen, they yell. You would have me openly alienate a powerful House that currently has nominal control over an entire district of the city? Nay, sir, that would be most unwise. And what proof do you have, besides your word? Verik is still missing, and would Vimanda implicate herself?"

Just wanted to point out again that nothing in the documents details where the funds for the butcher operation came from.

Hemming and hawing for a bit Daud will finally speak up. "I don't know really anything about this city but if the Arkonas are as powerful as you say they are then there's a good chance Verik is gonna be found gutted in an alley since he's longer useful. What's this other thing you have in mind? Aside from Gaius in bindings alone in your room for being a bad boy?"


Field Marshall Croft nods in agreement to Daud's first statement, looking mildly irritated. It is clear she wanted the man back more for information than anything else. Her face flushes with the second question he asks, but she ignores it.

"It's actually best discussed privately, Daud. Care to join me in my office? I promise there are no bindings in there." She speaks drily, arching a black eyebrow that has just started to weave a few strands of grey in it.

Pyron goes along with the idea to meet privately. Do you have any plans with the property. Perhaps you can install a manager that will continue to offer free food to the public on behalf of the queen. This would put the queen in better graces with the public. Everything there is ready for it. Finding suppliers shouldn't be a problem. It is something I thought you might like to consider.


Cressida nods to Pyron as they walk the short distance to her office. "It wouldn't hurt. But Verik doing it was seen as an act of mercy and kindness. If the Queen offered free meat in limited supplies, she would be seen as choosing favorites, and riots might again erupt. Still, I will pass along your suggestion to the appropriate party."

She walks into her office, complete with desk with a chair behind it for Croft, and two in front for visitors. An older man occupies one of the chairs, his salt and pepper hair pulled up into a bravo's knot. He turns as you enter, his weathered yet handsome features pulling into an amiable smile as he stands, moving more nimbly than you would expect for a man of his age.

Field Marshall Croft smiles (for perhaps the first time you've seen) and says, "Gaius, Pyron, Tolenn, Daud, I am pleased to introduce Vencarlo Orisini, an old friend of mine." Vencarlo bows deeply to the party, extending his hand forward and attempting to grasp Tolenn's hand, giving the back of it a light brush of his lips. He then straightens up, smiling once more.

"Well met, friends. Please, Lady Tolenn, take the seat I was using. Field Marshall Croft has seen to use very kind descriptions when talking about you four, and she is not easily pleased." He looks to the Field Marshall with his eyebrow arched ever-so-slightly, grin on his face at the tease. "Please, have a seat and hear what Field Marshall Croft has to say."

With a bemused smile, Tolenn allows the genteel man to greet her as he desired.

She then nods her thanks , and takes the offered chair, before directing her attention to the Field Marshall.


Croft takes a seat behind her desk, then starts to explain:

“As much as I would enjoy continuing the conversation, I
fear we just don’t have time. Vencarlo has often come to me
with news of important changes on the streets, and this is
no different—indeed, what he’s learned could degrade into
sanctions, embargos, or even war against Cheliax if we don’t act
now. This problem is a man named Darvayne Gios Amprei. You
might have heard of him—he’s an ambassador from Cheliax
whose disdain for Korvosa is well documented, and yet he’s
taken great pleasure in what our city has to offer. Even before
this recent unrest, this man was ready to recommend to his
government a sanction on trade, or perhaps even an embargo.
Vencarlo has learned through his own considerable sources
that Ambassador Amprei’s actual goals are to undermine
Korvosa’s economy to the point where he can buy up large
portions of the city from desperate landholders and establish
himself in a position of power here. Whatever the ambassador’s
reasons, we can’t let his bias or personal plans hurt Korvosa.
Yet neither can we take drastic action—not only would killing
him be wrong, but it’d simply martyr him in Cheliax’s eyes."
She watches the reactions of the group for a moment before continuing.

“Fortunately, Darvayne has his foibles. Again, Vencarlo has
learned that Ambassador Amprei has been making fairly regular
visits to a place in Old Korvosa called Eel’s End. This den of
vice is run by a dangerous man named Devargo Barvasi, better
known in Korvosa’s alleys as the King of Spiders. I’d love to put
Barvasi out of business, but he pays his vice taxes regularly
and never causes any problems—in fact, since he keeps his
business constrained entirely within the five ships moored at
Eel’s End, he’s actually one of the least of my worries. Truth be
told, I can’t decide whether Devargo is a stirge or a kraken. He
seems like a bloodsucking pest most days, but sometimes I
fear just how far his tentacles have wormed their way into our
great city. In this case though, his insidious web stretching
across Korvosa’s underworld might prove to our advantage."
The Field Marshall grimaces, as though having to work through such an intermediary is disgusting to her.

“Devargo would never let someone he recognizes as an ally
of the Guard into Eel’s End, but your group’s a different case.
I’d like you to pay a visit to Eel’s End and secure an audience
with Devargo. Find out what he knows about Amprei, get
proof of any illicit goings-on the ambassador might be
involved with, and bring that proof to me to use to undermine
any forthcoming attempts by him to get Cheliax to cut us off.
Devargo might not be willing to part with his information
easily. I’ll supply you with some gold to bribe him, and
whatever’s left over you can keep for yourself. Remember:
the man is dangerous, but so are you—if things get violent, I
wouldn’t mourn his passing.”
She looks at you all expectantly, waiting for a reply to her unspoken request.

Hmm we could skin him alive then have Gaius wear his skin and act like a foppish ass until Cheliax hates him and the... Nah, too much work, I'll let someone else suggest something.
