By the time the party returns to the camp, the fire has died out. The party's lights reveal that the site seems largely undisturbed.

Perception, DC 15, Survival DC 10:

There are hyena and donkey footprints in the camp, and among the corpses of the camels, similar to the ones in the village. They Come in from the north, move around the camp site and then lead to where the horses and camels were tied...

Survival, DC 15:

The donkey footprints are not those of a four-legged variety. They are clearly bipedal.

Ajkanir lights a torch before heading back to camp, confident that whatever wiped out the village is long gone. On arriving back at the now quiet camp, however, he pauses and puts a hand to his sword, "Hold, friends! While we were distracted at that unfortunate village, our camp has been visited by strange beasts indeed. And they lead to our mounts..."

Ajkanir draws his blade and moves swiftly over to where their animals were tied up, only to find the bodies of their mounts in the darkness. He looks more closely at the footprints and says "It looked at first as if hyenas and donkeys had raided our camp, a peculiar thought. And now it seems that the donkeys walked on two legs, rather than four - stranger still. Khol, would you look at these tracks and tell me that your eyes see what mine do?"

Two of the mounts are dead. Zahur and Khol's camels lie rent on the ground. Blood and viscera are spread over the area in bloody swathes.

Of Natasha and Ajkanir's mounts, there is no sign.

"It is possible we are dealing with something unnatural here. Grab what you can and head back to the town. The huts will offer precious little protection against our stalking foes but it will be better than nothing."

"Bloody barghests' bowels!" Natasha curses. "The filth must have a spellcaster with them, for the wards not to have been triggered! -- And they must still be closeby. This does not bode well for those taken."

Natasha sighs angrily. "I need my sleep, though, or else I will be unable to cast properly in the morning."

The ward has been triggered, however, the party was too far away from the campsite to have heard them. Alarm spells are audible up to maybe 200 feet away when the audible alarm is chosen.

"I agree with Razan, we'd do better to stay here at camp - too many unknowns over at the village. I'd like to follow these tracks at first light, provided that gives Natasha the rest time she needs, and see if we can't get my damn horse back." Ajkanir looks around at the peaceful-looking campsite, marvelling at how completely he and his comrades were duped. "I'll take the next watch, though I think we've already missed the real excitement for the evening."

Ajerviskanis seems to have spoken too soon... The chittering laughter of hyenas splits the night air as the party debates their course of action.

And then, the sound of tearing flesh, from the corpses of the mounts, just beyond the firelight.

Ajkanir, blade drawn, turns to face the new threat, saying"Excellent, Razan, your light will be helpful in finding and fighting these beasts. Zahur and 'Tasha, can you provide light if Razan's little glowing friend gets caught up in the fight?"

A grin on his face, Ajkanir subtly changes his posture, his arms extending out like great wings and his weight shifting onto the balls of his feet. He then looks towards Khol and says "Shall we see if today is our day to die?" and strides towards the edge of the firelight.

"No, we shall see who has come to perish before us!" Quinta growls, shifting into a stance Ajkanir may well recognize. "Luces pendantes saltantes inflammo!"

Natasha casts Dancing Lights, making the lights look like floating torches, and sends them out to illuminate the mounts' bodies. She uses a swift action to go into Snake Style-stance.

Natasha's lights dart over to the bodies, and reveal two hyenas furiously tearing into the abdomen of the beast. One of them is buried up to its mid section in the dead animal. The other pulls back and regards the party passively.

With a sickly snapping of bones, the creature rears back on to it's hind legs. They shrivel into a hoofed foot. The thing's front legs violently snap back to a human-like bearing, and it's fur and flesh fall away into rotting robes wrapped around a skeletal form. A dark red light pours forth from the creature's mouth.

The second draws out of the camel's corpse, and does the same.

"Efit, we have company for dinner. I thought they'd left us this generous spread as a gift." The creature's voice is cold, hollow and echoes forth from the skull, from a motionless jawbone.

"That is because you are in death as much a fool as you were in life, Elum. Men do not leave such morsels alone for very long." the second one snaps. "Just as well. Never have we been so well-fed." A sick glee fills the creature's voice.

Knowledge, Arcana DC 20, Knowledge, Planes DC 20:

With a fierce grin, Ajkanir looks at the monstrous things and says ”Efit and Elum, is it? I see you are gifted with speech, if not beauty. Perhaps you’d care to tell me what you are and how you’d prefer to die? And where my fine grey horse has gone?”

Sandstreak rears up and lashes out at the monster with his hooves and then snaps at the beast. Razan then has Sandstreak dance back allowing the lantern archon to send two rays of light shooting unobstructed at the undead thing.

Both creatures are now within the archon's aura of menace and must make a DC 13 will save or take a -2 penalty to attacks, AC, and saves. It does not appear to be mind effecting or anything so it ought to work on undead - I hope.

Aura of Menace:
Aura of Menace (Su) A righteous aura surrounds archons that fight or get angry. Any hostile creature within a 20-foot radius of an archon must succeed on a Will save to resist its effects. The save DC varies with the type of archon, is Charisma-based, and includes a +2 racial bonus. Those who fail take a –2 penalty on attacks, AC, and saves for 24 hours or until they successfully hit the archon that generated the aura. Khol manages to land a solid, but largely ineffective blow. -3hp and Natasha's magic missiles slam into the beast, and it roars again in rage and agony. -10 hp

Salt's stinger finds no purchase, however, in the skeletal monster.

I am ruling that since the archon's Aura is essentially a mind effect, and ghul are undead, they do not suffer the effects. Open to counter-arguments, however please post in the discussion threads, since lantern archons are cool and I'm sure you'll summon them again.

From the rolls, it looks like Zahur's action was successful, and my sword is now considered a Bane weapon - adjust my rolls accordingly if this is not the case.

Ajkanir laughs out loud as he says "You'll need to be quicker than that to taste my blood, beast!" He takes two powerful swipes with his scimitar, which seems to glow with an unearthly essence after Zahur's peculiar attack with his spear-tip.

Round 2 wrap-up.
With Elum distracted by the Archon, Razan attempts to run down Efit, and scores a nasty hit. -26 hp Natasha attempts to scorch the ghul into ash, but the innate resistance of the thing lessens the effect of her spell. While the rags the creature wears begin to smolder and burn, it stays standing somehow. -11 h[

Razan and salt manage to finish of Elum in a flurry of bardiche strikes and clutching claws. The creature collapses into a heap of bones and rags, the fire behind Elum's eyes fading away to smoke. Zahur's enchanted strike lays true, opening up Efit to Ajkanir....

"Aieee, nicely done everyone. Archon cast detect evil and scan the area about us until you return home please, I thank you for your help," Razan says dismounting and withdrawing his wand of infernal healing which he uses on both himself and on Sandstreak twice, their wounds beginning to slowly knit back together as the bleeding stops.

Wand down to 47/50 charges

"Now I'm definitely getting some sleep, aieeee, but lets move the camp its going to smell around here. I don't want to be inside though."

"Agreed," Natasha says, while she fussily brushes imaginary flecks of dust from her sleeves. "Well. Now we know what happened to the town. A joint Gnoll / Div attack. As good as Div, anyway. Foul Ahriman's lackeys, no matter how fine you slice it. Those people..."

For a moment, Natasha closes her eyes and shudders. "Poor bastards," she concludes, with great feeling.

"We should all pray for their souls. I agree we need rest, but will make sure no other surprises await." While the archon casts detect evil about the area, Zahur will search the bodies and detect magic and then look for any evidence of additional foes.

Ajkanir wipes his blade clean, smiling wearily and saying,"Well done indeed, companions, it was a pleasure fighting with you. Zahur, the effect of your spell on my blade brought an end to that filthy creature, and we all fought well as a team. I have fought with mercenary bands that were less well-coordinated after weeks on campaign together."

Ajkanir looks about the campsite and says "And I also agree, let us move our feet a bit away from this bloody ground and take what rest we can before the morning."

Zahur:

Among the rags and smoldering bones of Efit, you find a cloth sack containing 3 large gems, 75 platinum coins bearing the seal of Duwwor, and a silver symbol of Erastil

The party relocates to the village without incident. There are many small huts that can accommodate a few, while the larger stone buildings can fit the entire party with ease.

I don't think we really want to stay in the Village DM Corvus. Its a big disadvantage for Razan and I'd argue for the group at large to be inside when we don't need to be. Razan just wanted to move away from the corpses.

His watch having been the first Razan finally settles down into his bedroll ensuring Sandstreak in brushed at tethered mere feet away.

My mistake. We'll just say you've all moved a ways down the trail toward the village.

Zahur offers a thin smile and nods at Ajkanir's praise, "Glad to assist Ajkanir. I may not have the same skills in battle the rest of you do, but I hope my talents will help to make the rest of you even better." After examining the corpses, Zahur shows all of the items to the rest of the group and helps with the relocation of the camp. "It looks like another visitor from Duwwor has fallen victim to these fiends." Ajkanir returns Zahur's smile and says "I have thought of another way in which your skills could be helpful, though I wish it had occurred to me sooner. Can you track where these beasts have taken the other mounts? I would greatly value the recovery of my horse, though I hold out little hope of that. Tracking may be easier by daylight, but the beasts could be far away by then."

I'm not sure what time of night it is at this point.

On seeing Khol lying down to sleep, Ajkanir audibly slaps himself in the forehead and exclaims "What can I have been thinking? We have a skilled tracker who can see in the dark, and I've failed to ask him the favor of seeking my horse. While Razan is probably right that our mounts are lost, I should like to at least make an effort to see which way they were taken. Khol, I know you value your rest, but could you assist Zahur in studying our previous campsite, to see if you can determine where my horse and Natasha's camel might have gone? I'll leave it to you to decide whether the prospects for tracking are better done sooner or when the light is better."

Ajkanir then turns to Natasha and says "In the morning, when we can see more clearly, let us turn to the items Zahur recovered from the ghuls' bodies, and see if we cannot estimate their worth."

@DM - I presume you don't allow Taking 20 on Appraise, because there's a penalty for a low roll, in the form of an inaccurate appraisal? How about Take 10, and the others can aid? If Zahur or Natasha take 10, they'll get 15, and 3 of us aiding would allow us to determine the value.
