DM Carpe's Serpents Skull

Game Master Byden

The merchant ship Jenivere has embarked upon a voyage from Magnimar to distant Eleder, in a land of jungles and ancient ruins. Our heroes have been picked up at one of the many ports along the way, and now head for the myth shrouded Mwangi expanse.

I'm also enjoying it so far (and thanks for the kind words, Joll; I like this character concept and have a lot of fun playing Dragolan). Nice job keeping the pace going, even though it's intimidating to check the site and see eight or ten posts in the queue; if it's only one or two, I don't feel as though I have to set aside a big block of time to catch up.

Hmmm, yes I can see that with the first encounter, not too bad in RL because its over in minutes, but in PBP its frustrating not being able to act as its so exacerbated.

On a side note I'm not sure its come over too clearly in the game, but Aerys has offered to let you all read her epic. I recommend you do so as it imparts her reward...

Please note you should consider this encounter potentially deadly. Its a CR6, but a very shwingy one, and there are ten of you with NPCs. I'll run all the NPCs because you might need them, give IC instructions if you want anything done by them, etc. I don't always go with the random encounters rolled, but I think this has the potential to be pretty neat.

I'm a bit concerned about "playing with myself" here so if any of you would like to run an NPC please let me know and I'll give you their relevant info. As the only unfriendly NPC Ishirou is not available, but all others are.

Lydran assume you got to prepare whatever spells you choose for the day. Also be aware you contracted red ache and are currently at 7 strength, you get another save in the mroning with a +4 bonus from Joll's ministrations and a further +4 if you choose to eat some of the viper berries - bear in mind you are aware they are pretty valuable though.

Sorry to hear that martinaj. Any chance you could elaborate? Feel free to PM me, I'd at least like the opportunity to address any concerns for the remaining players. That said it looks like you've dropped all your games save the one you are DMing.

I'll put up a recruitment thread I suppose. Any thoughts folks? I suppose I could simply say there was another survivor who was thrown overboard earlier and washed up further down the coast. Likely give normal starting wealth, but put them at the same XP total as you.

Sorry to see you go, man.

I'm sure you won't have too much trouble finding a replacement, Carpe. If you want, I can run a second character or something temporary until we get someone. I'm flexible. I don't have any other PbP's that occupy my time currently.

I'd rather not do that, but if you want to take control of an NPC for combats - they won't come up much but will likely come up again - you'd be very welcome to. I'll probably engineer a death for Lydran after this fight, don't really need another NPC.

What do you anticipate the level cap to be for this campaign, DM Carpe?
I can post semi-regularly, thanks to the kindness of family, by the way, but it looks like the old home network is b0rk3d up once again...

I'm OK with another PC but do we really need one? There are still 5 of us (rogue, ranger, bard, inquisitor, and oracle). Not the most balanced party but look at movies/books, the parties seldom are balanced.

How about we keep going for a bit and see how we do. The DM can always 'scale back' encounters if necessary.

We also have NPCs willing to help us out.

Thoughts?

One question for the game: Does Joll call on his deity out loud and by name?

Cheliax

M Human Inquisitor 1 HP 14/14 | AC 14 FF 13 Touch 11 | Saves +4/+1/+5 | Init + 1 | Percep +6

He has not done so yet but probably will in the future. Why the concern? I would think that a reminder of good old Cheliax would be comforting to Quinta.

In all seriousness, Joll sees Asmodeus more as a unifying principle of the Empire than in spiritual terms. It is more of a secular interpretation of a god, if you will.

Lacedon Monster Info:

I'm inclined to think that a sixth PC offers a bit of a safety net, PBP sadly does have a high attrition rate when you are talking about such long term commitments. I might wait until the next module though.

Quinta this module goes to 4th or 5th level, but I'm planning to run the whole AP which would take you to 13th or 14th. Obviously thats going to take years, but that,s PBP for you.

Female Human (Chelish) Bard 1 / Sorcerer 2; Initiative +2, Perception +4, hp 19, AC 14 (+2 Dex, +2 armour), Fort +3, Ref +5, Will +7

@ DM Carpe: Good to know for the purpose of planning my character's development. ^^

@ Joll: Heh. Have you read Quinta's background? :p If/when she finds out Joll is connected to the devils in any way, he is quickly going to become her least favourite person on the trip.
This is not meant as anything personal to the player, and Quinta won't backstab him in a fight or anything, but she will be a bit chilly. ;)

Indeed I did read her background and thought that it was one of the best on these boards.

Joll's connection to Asmodeus is the least loathsome thing about him. I need to get back to his literary inspiration: a deeply racist torturer who ultimately displayed no objection to betraying his compatriots in order to ensure his personal survival. It should be fun.

Female Human (Chelish) Bard 1 / Sorcerer 2; Initiative +2, Perception +4, hp 19, AC 14 (+2 Dex, +2 armour), Fort +3, Ref +5, Will +7

(Sorry I haven't posted before this today; we had a little fire at work last night, and I spent most of the day running and jumping to deal with the aftermath. I don't know why people were so up in arms; it was only a couple of ounces of molten sodium, and no one was hurt. Ah, well.)

Dragolan is largely apolitical regarding Cheliax, but he doesn't think too much of any deity preaching asceticism of any sort. As is probably obvious.

Okay, seeing as we've lost Lydran, I am volunteering to multiclass into Sorcerer once we level up; we're sure to need someone who can dish out the magical hurt at a distance sooner or later. Serpentine bloodline cool with everyone? ^^

I'm Ok with that but make sure that is where you want to take your PC and you're not doing it because you are 'forced' to. I hate to see such a promising career in the arts be truncated like that. :)

All kidding aside, it would be very easy to recruit a full arcane caster if DM Carpe feels we need one.

As Fabian said, it would probably be easy to recruit another PC. But your offer is generous all the same. Please take whatever path you would enjoy with Quinta.

That said, would you consider the Infernal bloodline? I think you could work it into Quinta's back-story very well. And it might raise interesting role-playing opportunities. For instance, it might further explain why her erstwhile suitor was so taken with her back in Cheliax. Just think of Quinta's reaction on discovering her diabolical heritage.

I have only played an arcane caster in one PbP that died early, so I make this suggestion without weighing any mechanical considerations.

I really don't think its necessary, and I will certainly recruit a new PC for the second module. That said I won't be limiting the applications to any one role, and while I'll certainly take input from you guys if its a fighter that's clearly the best character it'll be a fighter that joins sorta thing.

I second the advise to choose the path you think most fun for Quinta, this is a Campaign where NPC allies are integral, so they can likely fill any gaps out of combat. I can't really see any situation where the lack of a dedicated arcanist would be crippling.

Personally I might be more inclined to look at the Eldritch Heritage feat line, in particular the Arcane Bloodline, which for three feats, skill focus any knowledge, eldritch heritage, and improved eldritch heritage nets you a familiar and the ability to add a spell from the wizard spellist to your spells known at 9th, 13th and 17th level. Big investment, but big rewards and skill focus knowledge isn't too bad. Some of the other bloodlines would be cool with eldritch heritage to.

HP: 12/18 | AC: 17/13/14 | Saves: 0/+6/+3 | Initiative: +3 | Perception: +11 (+12 vs. traps) | Evasion | Fast Stealth |

Now that I think about it, a fighter would be a pretty awesome addition to our squishy group.

No worries. ^^ The beauty of multiclassing is that I can take more ranks in Bard further down the line. The beauty of Pathfinder is that I can take cross-class ranks in Perform without penalties, and since such ranks will be a class skill for my Bard levels, I'll still have the very nifty +3 bonus.

Well, I wouldn't enjoy the Infernal bloodline that much. ^^; I think Serpentine can serve to draw in Mr. Creepy just fine.

No problem. ^^ I've been toying with the idea of multiclassing Quinta since the start.

On another note... o_o A chunk of my character story seems to have disappeared from my profile page. What the fudge? I'm going to have to write that out again. And I can't quite remember all the names... >_<

Ahahh... ha.

Hello, my name is Quinta Wist-Thrune. Just as soon as I get my foot out of my mouth, I'll be ready to take my foot out of my mouth. ^^;

Dare I recommend Jack for bonus XP?

HP: 12/18 | AC: 17/13/14 | Saves: 0/+6/+3 | Initiative: +3 | Perception: +11 (+12 vs. traps) | Evasion | Fast Stealth |

Jack is blessed with a complete lack of inhibition. He approaches situations with an eye for how they can be twisted in his favor, even if logic dictates that it might be conventionally wrong. Consequences? Those are just unexpected opportunities!

That's how he's always gotten ahead in life!

That being said, I was half expecting to get killed there -- but I had to play Jack the way Jack is.

Glad you enjoyed the tension! I'll remember that when Jack is flinging a mystery lever "just to see what it does".
