Dashel de Penderwon |
I may have been tracking your movement incorrectly, Dashel. It's 30'?
20 foot movement in breastplate
Dashel is not aware of any other risk or situation arising. Unless someone says something or he runs into something.
DM Carbide - Dark Road |
She's got a 40' movement rate, so unless you have something to navigate the forest terrain at normal speed she's going to outpace you. Given that you all started at higher than first level, I'll give each of you an untrained Knowledge (Nature) check to have run into or heard about something like her before.
Combat over!
Drovic Syrendross |
Oh wow, 40 foot move, yeah there's about 0 chance of us catching her without some serious effort and resources.
Drovic frowns at the disappearing woman. "We have larger problems, we need to return to the house as soon as possible, there are two ogres and a troll heading towards it, and they seem aware of the situation."
Dashel de Penderwon |
"How far away?" Dashel straightens up. "get our oil ready the troll will need that. Perhaps Conner can hit it with flaming arrows?" he looks at the group, "We need teams to attack and bring these breasts down. I'll hit the troll with a scorching ray."
How long till they arrive for the buffing?
Drovic Syrendross |
Drovic closes his eyes for a brief moment, then opens them. "I don't have much in the way of fire, but I can create grease." Drovic will give his best estimation of how long it will take the three enemies to get here.
Dashel de Penderwon |
I just realized that I don't have any oil on my sheet. I also assumed a few thing in my previous post that Dashel knew about fire with trolls. I did not mean to metagame, I assumed he had some knowledge by this skill level.
DM Carbide - Dark Road |
The appearance of the creature, combined with the presence of the ogres and troll, jars a memory loose for Drovic and Dashel. There is a monster called an annis hag, carnivorous and evil, with a reputation for eating innocents such as young children. They sometimes form covens with other hags, and are also known to keep ogres and trolls as servants.
Dashel check: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (16) + 1 = 17
Drovic check: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (18) + 3 = 21
Grungar check: 1d20 ⇒ 3
Besmarial check: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (8) + 5 = 13
ETA: Again, given your character levels I'm not going to make an issue of you knowing something about trolls. They're common enough.
Dashel de Penderwon |
Dashel wasting no time will begin to buff: using his wand of shield of faith he will cast it on each member. Frowning slightly at the Drovic.
+3 deflection bonus, 6 minutes of time.
This spell creates a shimmering, magical field around the target that averts and deflects attacks. The spell grants the subject a +2 deflection bonus to AC, with an additional +1 to the bonus for every six levels.
Once he has indication that the creatures are approaching he will use his divine favor wand on himself (it's personal use spell).
DM Carbide - Dark Road |
You get yourselves positioned so that you can watch for the monsters, between the clearing and their projected direction of approach. Besmarial stays high except when bobbing down to report.
Time passes. There is no sign of the creatures, even ten minutes after they should have arrived in the area. With Besmarial continuing to scout from above, Conner and Drovic cautiously and stealthily advance along the projected direction of approach, followed by Dashel and Grungar. At some point Conner finds the hag's tracks again; she apparently headed in the same direction as the ogres and troll were coming from. The slayer keeps an eye on the tracks while continuing to advance. He easily finds the place where, it appears, she met the ogres and troll, and their tracks turn north at that point--perhaps going to take a wide circle around the clearing, but in any case not going directly towards it.
Conner Hawthorne |
Conner returns to the others. and whispers from their position.
It looks like they are circling around. we wait.
Conner draws and arrow and hunkers down, just off the flank of the party.
Stealth: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (19) + 13 = 32
Dashel de Penderwon |
"I'd hate to split the group, but we don't know which direction they will hit from. They appear to be circling back around. We should position at least two of us meet them on that side of the clearing. Everyone needs to be ready to move quickly." He taps begins to move towards the area where he suspects they will come out from.
Dashel de Penderwon |
"I'll stay next to the house, in case they slip between our defenses."
What time of day is it? I'll probably try to hide within the pile of wood since the father is gone.
Desmond nods approvingly.
DM Carbide - Dark Road |
Drovic conceals himself, paying particular attention to sight lines from the house after his earlier mishap. A few more minutes pass, then Conner and Grungar think they hear something in the distance...it might be another shriek like the hag made when she was wounded, but it's not clear.
DM Carbide - Dark Road |
Grungar, you saw the old lady conjure fog, and when you entered the fog there was a much larger creature that clawed and bit at you hidden inside. Given that Conner probably had time to talk about the tracks he followed, you may suspect that the woman was a shapeshifter of some sort.
DM Carbide - Dark Road |
A half-hour goes by. Whatever made the noise to the north has been silent since the initial outburst. The only thing worthy of note is at about the fifteen-minute mark, when Drovic hears the door to the house open. The woman of the house says something in a hushed but intense tone, followed by another woman's voice apparently asking a question. The first woman says the same word two or three times in rapid succession. Then the door closes firmly, cutting off his ability to hear anything more.
DM Carbide - Dark Road |
Drovic, with your Sense Motive check you have little trouble following the emotional tenor of the conversation, even though you don't know the language. There are three women speaking: the keystone's mother and two others. One of the others sniffles occasionally and seems to be stifling sobs, and the other one occasionally says something in a comforting tone. The keystone's mother speaks quietly and intensely (possibly talking about the mysterious figure she saw...). You can hear them well enough to tell when one comes up to a window to peek out, so you're not in the way when that happens.
DM Carbide - Dark Road |
Besmarial dips down next to the elf, and after a time reports, "The baby's mother--I have not heard her name yet--is concerned because she saw you go past, and because she heard the hag's scream shortly thereafter. She plans to ask her husband to investigate once he returns home. One of the visitors is still not well emotionally because her husband Vak disappeared a few days ago; the other visitor, I believe a cousin of hers, is staying with her for now. The two visitors are from the small village to the south."
Drovic Syrendross |
Bahahaha good one DM!
Drovic slowly takes out some trail rations, chewing the dried meat quietly while holding his post. He keeps an eye out of the others signal him back, since in his current position he is incapable of sweeping the area to get an all clear.
Dashel de Penderwon |
Dashel removes some his trail rations and neatly unwraps them, he eats and walks staying alert.
perception: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (2) + 9 = 11
I noticed that I'm donw some HP so he would have cured those HP:
wand clw: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5
wand clw: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4
wand clw: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 1 = 6
wand clw: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5
wand clw: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3
wand clw: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3
DM Carbide - Dark Road |
Unless the party does something, the only thing that will happen before the baby's father gets home is when the three women go out to tend the garden for a little while. Drovic has some warning, so is able to take 10 on Stealth to avoid them; everyone else is far enough from the clearing that there's little or no chance of being spotted.
Drovic Syrendross |
Drovic returns to the party after a long time and tells them what Bes translated. "We might have to stage some fake traveler, just to put their mind at ease. Or just hide very well and let it blow over."
Grungar Ironcloud |
Dwarves are always good a making a good friend and making people feel at ease! Give 'em some ale and they liven up real quick! Grungar smiles, as he obviously completely forgot that dwarves are not that common here.
Dashel de Penderwon |
"I suggest that we introduce ourselves as special trackers...sent by the authorities to investigate strange occurrences. That would give them a sense of relief. We could show the husband some prints to reaffirm our being around. Our angel can translate for us." He pauses, "The grieving woman is distraught while our wards are nervous, this will provide a sense of security. I'm the best capable of not scaring the family to death." he looks at the dwarf and the assassin.
Dashel de Penderwon |
With that once the baby's father gets home Dashel and Besmarial go to the house in a non-threatening manner and knock on the door. Using Besmarial to translate. 'Hello Friend, I am Dashel de Penderwon I am here to assist."
I know it's risky to engage the family, but we would have the father out investigating soon enough. That would potentially cause problems.
I would agree Grungar "if' dwarf's were more common.
diplomacy: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (11) + 7 = 18
Conner Hawthorne |
I would just as soon stay hidden, and perform my role accordingly. Be careful, Dashel. I believe we were told not to interract with the charge. Although, I do not recal any reason being given.
Conner hunkers down at the edge of the clearing to await the arrival of the father from a hidden position while he munches on some trail rations.
Stealth: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (7) + 13 = 20
