Kragnor Stonebreaker |
Kragnor drops his waraxe, draws his hammer, and swings hard at the autobot.
Power Attack: 1d20 + 8 - 2 ⇒ (5) + 8 - 2 = 11
Damage: 1d12 + 4 + 6 ⇒ (3) + 4 + 6 = 13
He continues to miss.....

The crocodile lashes out at Eva, biting her for 7 HP. The agile monk is able to keep it from grabbing her, though, and its tail slap misses her. The frog bites at Kali again but misses, and then disappears with a pop. The undine casts another spell, wreathing her hand in swirls of black vapor; she steps up and touches Kali, leaving a trail of sizzling acid on the kitsune. The worst of the acid washes off in the water, though. Take 7 HP acid damage, Kali...that was on 5d4. Feh.
Senja and Kali up!
Croc on Eva, tail slap: 1d20 ⇒ 1
Bite damage: 1d8 + 4 ⇒ (3) + 4 = 7
Grab attempt: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (8) + 11 = 19
Frog bite on Kali: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (12) + 3 = 15
Touch attack on Kali: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (15) + 3 = 18
Acid damage: 5d4 ⇒ (2, 1, 2, 1, 1) = 7
Kali Starr |
Kali focuses her attack on the crocodile, taking advantage of Senja's Fortune hex (if applicable).
Wakizashi: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (7) + 6 = 13
Wakizashi 2nd chance if Fortune Hex still in effect: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (16) + 6 = 22
Damage with raging song: 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 1 = 6

I think it's still active.

With Senja's magical support, Kali hits the crocodile and sends it back to whence it came.
Senja Kala |
Senja continues his mad laughter, dark bubbles floating out of his mouth as he laughs, sustaining the good fortune supporting Kali. He takes a short step forward, reaching his hands up to capture the bubbles as they float about. One by one, Senja somehow flattens each bubble until it is a shadowy disk, which he tosses at the feet of the robot. As the disks sink to the floor, they resemble nothing so much as variously-sized holes in the stone, which the automaton must avoid in order to attack!
Move action to cackle to maintain Fortune Hex, 5-foot step, standard action to use Misfortune hex on robot, DC 15 Will save.

Senja, you can't take a 5' step while swimming since you don't have a Swim speed. You can let the current carry you 10', though, and I'll assume you do that.
Somehow, despite Senja's placement of disks of shadow on the floor ten feet below the swimming automaton, his hex bites on the construct. It manages to hit Kragnor again nevertheless for 21 HP.
Kragnor, Eva, and Asvald can act!
Attack on Kragnor, PA: 1d20 + 10 - 2 ⇒ (15) + 10 - 2 = 23
Attack on Kragnor, PA: 1d20 + 10 - 2 ⇒ (11) + 10 - 2 = 19
PA damage: 2d4 + 6 + 7 ⇒ (4, 4) + 6 + 7 = 21
DM Carbide |
That would be the time I roll max damage....
Asvald Bjornson |
Finding himself unable to keep up with the damage being done to his dwarf friend, Asvald draws his dagger and whistles a tune.
Dazzling Blade. DC 12 will save vs blind. If it makes the save it's still dazzled for a turn!
Eva Baldursdóttir |
Eva wobbles from the bite, but steps forward bravely and grabs the spellcaster by the pinky-finger. In a smooth, well-rehearsed motion she twists the finger and grabs the hand, pressing the palm in toward her victim and forcing her to the ground.
Grapple: 1d20 + 7 + 2 ⇒ (20) + 7 + 2 = 29
DM Carbide |
Eva, I'm not sure you can manage that move while swimming. You're moving at 25% normal speed, and you've got one diagonal move in there.
DM Carbide |
You'll have to--the diagonal move is 30' for the single square, and the final square is another 20'.
Asvald Bjornson |
Carbide, can you roll that will save? Asvald's standard action is dependent on if that blind lands or not.
DM Carbide |
The sharkbot manages to avoid the worst of Asvald's spell.
Asvald Bjornson |
Since I forgot to mention it in the last couple posts: CLW Wand has 39 charges remaining.
Gripping his dagger tightly, Asvald jabs at the construct.
Stabbage: 1d20 + 7 - 1 + 1 ⇒ (11) + 7 - 1 + 1 = 18
Damage: 1d4 + 4 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 4 + 2 + 1 = 11
DM Carbide |
Asvald hits the sharkbot and does it some damage, but not as much as he'd expect--the construct's body is tough. Eva uses inner power to reach the undine and put her onto the ground.

'Fraid so, Asvald. Kragnor's dice were running very cold.
Senja Kala |
Swim: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (17) + 3 = 20 Forgot about this last round.
Senja maintains his position in the hallway, kicking his feet in the water while his hands swirl about in front of him, conjuring a glittering ball of darkness, like a thousand tiny chips of obsidian. He hurls the ball at the shark-bot, hoping to blind it and stop its deadly attacks! As the ball strikes and bursts, Senja continues his crazed laughter!
Standard action to cast glitterdust targeted to only hit bot, DC 18 Will save. Move action to cackle and maintain Fortune on Kali and Misfortune on robot.
Kali Starr |
Did we make Arcana checks on the sharkbot already? I apologize for slowing down combat, but Kali's next actions might depend on what we know about it.
Know. (arcana): 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (19) + 8 = 27
DM Carbide |
Based on Kali's observations regarding Clanky, the similar (albeit much less well-maintained) construct that the party faced on the goblin level, she suspects that it will be resistant to damage from all but the hardest weapons, and once it's been damaged significantly it will begin to spark dangerously. It's susceptible to magic suppression as well.
Kali Starr |
Kali quickly climbs up the platform and holds her weapon near the undine's throat, "Call off the construct and we'll let you live."
Intimidation 1: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (2) + 4 = 6
Intimidation 2: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (7) + 4 = 11
Well, it was worth a shot. I'd use my Folio reroll, but only 1 reroll per roll I believe.
DM Carbide |
She laughs (somewhat nervously). "It won't listen unless you stop attacking it and back away from it."
Senja's black glitter bomb obscures the construct's eyes.
DM Carbide |
How much are you dead by, Kragnor?
Senja Kala |
"Right, everyone," Senja calls from the doorway, "stop attacking the machine! Asvald, can you do anything for Kragnor?" More quietly, he says, "Dammit, we need Melody! Why did her family have to call her back to Cassomir?"
Asvald Bjornson |
Asvald holds his dagger up defensively and reaches for the immobile dwarf. "I don't know. He's hurt bad."
Waiting for an answer from Kragnor.
Kragnor Stonebreaker |
How much are you dead by, Kragnor?
I think Kragnor is dead by by -6. He was at 8 hp before the 21 damage, after the hit, he would lose the 8 hp from the rage, so 15 Con and -21 hp. I believe.
DM Carbide |
With the sharkbot blinded and not being attacked, the undine is able to get it to stand down.
Out of combat! I can't think of anything to do to save Kragnor, unfortunately. Too bad you can't reroll the CLW. However, this was the last fight of the level, and you should have enough money to pay for a raise if you want to--you each get 4800 gold.
Kali Starr |
"So, who are you, what is that construct, and what are you doing here exactly?" Kali asks the undine as she tries to avoid thinking about Kragnor's fate.
DM Carbide |
"I'm called Senethar. My brother and my sister and I are studying this place. That construct was a gift from Klarkosh, supposedly to help us defend the Drowned Level from the likes of you."
Asvald Bjornson |
"Your construct killed our friend. Give me one good reason we shouldn't do the same to you."
DM Carbide |
She gives a fatalistic shrug (as much as she can, with Eva holding her and Kali's knife at her throat). "Let me live and my sister won't attack you on the way out of here. Unless you killed her, too."
Asvald Bjornson |
"She didn't sick her pets on us on sight. We had a chat and went our separate ways. What happened here was your fault."
DM Carbide |
"My fault? You're the ones who came barging in here like you own the place. What makes you any different from Klarkosh?"
Senja Kala |
"Klarkosh?" Senja asks, his interest piqued in spite of his sorrow for Kragnor. "You know him? He came here with an army of automatons, right? I'd imagine he came to take the place over. Well, we didn't. We're just exploring, learning, which is why we didn't fight with your sister, we just talked."
He considers a moment, then asks, "Why did Klarkosh feel this place needed to be defended from the likes of us?"
DM Carbide |
"That's the one. I figure he's watching out for someone who's going to try to do to him what he did to whoever was here before him. Idiot. He's looking in the wro--" She cuts herself off and glances over at the automaton.
Asvald Bjornson |
"Spit it out. Or I'll gut you and take my chances with your construct", Asvlad growls.
Senja Kala |
"And he'll only get to do that if Kali doesn't get there first," Senja weighs in grimly, "so you should really finish whatever you were about to say."
His eyes cut over to the robot, and he says more quietly, "Unless someone is listening through our glittery friend there."
DM Carbide |
She speaks in a lower voice. "I don't trust it."
Senja Kala |
Senja is thoughtful a moment, How can I trust her? Her creature killed Kragnor! But it's not really her creature, it seems...and she may have valuable information to share with us.
Speaking even more quietly, Senja asks, "Can you command it? Perhaps ask it to go elsewhere for a moment? Or tell it to stay on guard here and we'll go somewhere? If we promise not to hurt you while it's gone?"
DM Carbide |
She'll agree to that. I assume you'll take her gear before you let her go, because you know she swims a lot faster than any of you. She's not happy about that; there's nothing she can do about it, though. (Eidolon is gone for now, and she's used a lot of her spells for the day.)
Once up and out of the chamber, she reveals that she and her sibs have been contacted by serpentfolk from further down in the Spire--she's not sure how much lower they are, but they're in conflict with Klarkosh. Unfortunately, she has never been lower down, so she has no useful information about Klarkosh's clockwork maze--only the name. She knows that the construct is set to attack anyone who tries to get to the access to the next level.
Senja Kala |
Seeing little point in dissembling, Senja is more or less direct with Senethar, "You don't trust Klarkosh's minion, so I imagine you've little faith in him either? Perhaps we can work together in that case, or at least not fight each other. It's true we fought your brother, but he attacked us, and we didn't kill him. So one of our family is dead, and yours have all survived - remember that."
After pausing to collect himself, Senja continues, "Serpentfolk, eh? Interesting. And you say the construct is set to attack anyone who tries to go down to the next level. Well that's where we plan to go. I think with a bit more strategy - and you helping us rather than fighting us - we can defeat it. But how do we get to the next level? And while we're at it, where do those glowy blue portals go?"
Anything I'm missing that we want to know about, gang? And should we rest up and then try to fight the construct, or take some other approach? I'm not sure we can call this level done until the robot is taken out, if it aims to keep us from getting down to the next level.
Kali Starr |
"Yeah, it would go a long way if you can turn the construct off or help us destroy it." Kali adds listlessly, her morale not the best at the moment.
DM Carbide |
"The portals go to the Elemental Plane of Water. Now that I think on it, you can bypass the construct to get to the exit." I've marked the exit with a red asterisk on the map.
And that's it for the level! I'll get the chronicle sheets out in the next day or three, and since it's OK with all of you will deduct the cost of the raise and restorations.
