Kali Starr |
I'll leave that spot open for one of the heavy hitters.
"The spider is right above Asvald!" Kali warns the rest of the party then strikes out at the creature from her current position.
Wakizashi-lower ground-cover: 1d20 + 4 - 1 - 2 ⇒ (7) + 4 - 1 - 2 = 8
Damage: 1d6 ⇒ 3
Asvald Bjornson |
Fort: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (14) + 6 = 20
Asvald grunts in surprise and pain as he's viciouslly bitten. Turning his attention toward the monstrous spider, the young ulfen takes a mighty swing.
Sword (entangled): 1d20 + 6 - 2 ⇒ (18) + 6 - 2 = 22
Damage: 1d8 + 4 ⇒ (3) + 4 = 7
Senja Kala |
I think there's some confusion. The combat modifiers table gives +1 for attacking from above, but no penalty for attacking from below.
Melody Flaxseed |
Melody continues to ready her sling. Little else I can do without wasting resources on an unseen enemy.
sling: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (4) + 3 = 7
damage: 1d3 - 1 ⇒ (2) - 1 = 1
DM Carbide |
You're right, my bad. That's what I get for not looking things up.
Asvald hits the spider solidly! Kali misses it, though. Eva, since you're not pinned in place you can advance and take a swing at the spider; I think that because you're at half speed it's not considered a 5' step to get there, though.
Eva Baldursdóttir |
Eh, I won't be able to hit it while entangled anyway; better to clear webs.
Sunder: 1d20 + 3 - 2 ⇒ (8) + 3 - 2 = 9
Damage?: 1d8 + 3 ⇒ (8) + 3 = 11
Sunder: 1d20 + 3 - 2 ⇒ (11) + 3 - 2 = 12
Damage: 1d8 + 3 ⇒ (1) + 3 = 4
Kragnor Stonebreaker |
Hearing Asvald's cry of pain, Kragnor steps back toward the skald and swings upon seeing the spider!
Power Attack: 1d20 + 4 - 1 ⇒ (16) + 4 - 1 = 19
Damage: 1d10 + 3 + 3 ⇒ (3) + 3 + 3 = 9

Round 5:
Spider-acted
Kragnor-
Eva-
Asvald-
Kali-
Senja-
Melody-delaying
The spider bites Asvald again for 2 HP, plus make another DC 15 Fort save or take 3 STR damage.
Party up!
Bite damage: 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2
STR damage: 1d3 ⇒ 3
Kragnor Stonebreaker |
Power Attack: 1d20 + 4 - 1 ⇒ (7) + 4 - 1 = 10
Damage: 1d10 + 3 + 3 ⇒ (3) + 3 + 3 = 9
Kragnor swings at the spider again, but h8s axe gets hung up in the webs!
Kali Starr |
Wakizashi: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 2 = 7
Damage: 1d6 ⇒ 3
"Errgh." Kali growls with annoyance as the spider keeps avoiding her strikes.
Eva Baldursdóttir |
Eva slashes at webs before stepping forward to attack the spider. I can't tell if there's a web-free spot next to the spider already; if there is, I'll just 5' step into it and flurry the spider instead of wasting an attack on webs.
Attack: 1d20 + 3 + 1 ⇒ (7) + 3 + 1 = 11
Damage: 1d8 + 3 ⇒ (1) + 3 = 4
Attack: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (2) + 3 = 5
DM Carbide |
Asvald, Senja, and Melody up!
Asvald Bjornson |
Fort: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (19) + 6 = 25
Sword (entangled): 1d20 + 6 - 2 ⇒ (3) + 6 - 2 = 7
Damage: 1d8 + 4 ⇒ (4) + 4 = 8
Asvald manages to wrench away this time minimizing the damage from the bite but struggles to strike the monstrous spider.
DM Carbide |
Good grief, how is it that the spider survived that round? Asvald, Kragnor, and Kali all attack the spider, but through a scintillating display of agility it avoids every blow. Since Melody was delaying, she was able to step up to cure Asvald before Eva acted, so instead Eva cleared webs to get better access to the spider (although if Kragnor cleared the area next to Asvald that would also give her room to get in).
Round 6:
Spider-acted
Melody-
Kragnor-
Eva-
Asvald-
Kali-
Senja-
The spider bites Asvald again! Take 5 HP, and DC 15 Fort save or 2 STR damage.
Everyone can act!
Spider bite on Asvald, incl. height advantage: 1d20 + 4 + 1 ⇒ (17) + 4 + 1 = 22
Bite damage: 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5
STR damage: 1d3 ⇒ 2
Eva Baldursdóttir |
Eva steps over and tries to kill the spider.
Flurry (guidance): 1d20 + 3 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 3 + 1 = 6
Flurry: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (10) + 3 = 13
Miss Chance (high good): 1d100 ⇒ 43
Damage: 1d8 + 3 ⇒ (7) + 3 = 10
Asvald Bjornson |
Fort: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (11) + 6 = 17
Sword (entangled): 1d20 + 6 - 2 ⇒ (20) + 6 - 2 = 24
Damage: 1d8 + 4 ⇒ (7) + 4 = 11
Confirming: 1d20 + 6 - 2 ⇒ (6) + 6 - 2 = 10
Extra Damage: 1d8 + 4 ⇒ (1) + 4 = 5
Despite suffering another wound, Asvald winds up and strikes the spider solidly.
Kali Starr |
If the spider still lives, Kali attempts to rectify that.
Wakizashi-cover: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (14) + 2 = 16
Damage: 1d6 ⇒ 3
DM Carbide |
Asvald's sword finally brings an end to the spider's attacks...and its life.
Out of combat!
Searching the room (and incidentally clearing it of webs) you find a desiccated human body, two longswords, five daggers, a hand axe, and a pouch containing 42 copper pieces. All of the weaponry is normal craftsmanship, slightly rusty but still usable. Try to contain your glee at the vast wealth here :-|.
Where to now?
Kragnor Stonebreaker |
Kragnor moves to the northern door and peers at it. "This one?"
Perception for traps: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (4) + 9 = 13
Perception for traps: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (17) + 9 = 26
DM Carbide |
The door is free of traps, as far as Kragnor can tell.
DM Carbide |
The door opens to reveal a short hallway with a couple of doors at one end. The floor is choked with rubble, although the areas in front of the doors are all clear. A few strands of sagging web are draped over the rubble. From one of the taller piles protrudes a skeletal hand.
It appears that the rubble fell from the ceiling; something seems to have blasted out a cavity from the stone. At the top of the cavity, about fifteen feet up, is an irregular hole about five feet across that continues upwards.
Eva Baldursdóttir |
Eva moves into the room and examines the skeleton, though she refrains from touching it. What happened here, I wonder...
Perception: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (5) + 8 = 13
DM Carbide |
The majority of the skeleton is under rubble. It looks like the protruding hand and part of the wrist has been broken off of the rest of it.
Kali Starr |
Still agitated from nearly dying, Kali takes time to examine the hallway from the doorway for any especially well hidden traps or anything else not obvious.
Take 20 on Perception for 24.
Kragnor Stonebreaker |
Kragnor looks around and up at the ceiling. "Save this for later and explore the rest?"
DM Carbide |
Kali notices no traps in the parts of the hallway that she can see from the doorway.
Kali Starr |
"Maybe we should check it out now so we don't forget it later." Kali suggests with a minor shrug.
DM Carbide |
Where to? Digging out the skeleton wouldn't take too long, or you could check out the hole in the ceiling.
Kali Starr |
Kali concentrates for a moment and four orbs of light appear in the air around her. She points to the hole in the ceiling and the lights move up to illuminate the area in more detail. She moves forward cautiously to get a better look.
Used her spell-like ability to cast Dancing Lights
DM Carbide |
The hole leads to a short shaft. It continues up for another five feet or so before turning to the side, apparently as a horizontal tunnel about five feet across.
Kali Starr |
"Hey, if one of you gives me a boost, I can probably climb up there, no problem." Kali offers while still looking straight up into the hole, "Or, I guess a rope and grappling hook would work too if you want to do it the easy way."
Asvald Bjornson |
Asvald sheathes his sword. He moves up next to Kali and forms his hands into stirrup.
"Going up?"
Climb to aid: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (17) + 6 = 23
Kali Starr |
"Thanks! Kali says to Asvald as she takes him up on his offer to boost her up into the hole. She then tries to climb up to see what's inside the shaft, using her magical light to see.
Climb: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (11) + 4 = 15
DM Carbide |
The passage goes up and turns north, then runs for about ten feet before dead-ending. In the dead end are four waterskins (still full), four small wooden coffers with a brand stamp you recognize from Fort Inevitable, and a triple-tined grappling hook with fifty feet of knotted rope tied to it.
Kali Starr |
Kali quickly returns to the opening to inform the party of her find, "Hey guys, there's some full waterskins, a grappling hook with rope and four coffers from Fort Inevitable. I'll lower the coffers down with the rope."
She then returns to the items and takes a closer look at the dead end to make sure she isn't missing anything.
Perception on room: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (14) + 4 = 18
If nothing attracts her attention, Kali checks one of the coffers for traps then tries to open it.
Perception for traps: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (1) + 4 = 5
Take 10 on Disable Device to unlock for a 20 if necessary.
Melody Flaxseed |
"Did someone else make it in here? Or are they in here still? Prisoners, maybe? Hmmmm....." Melody follows Kali around and watches in anticipation.
DM Carbide |
There are no traps, and nothing of magic on the items. Opening the coffers reveals well-wrapped dried fish and meat, heavily salted to preserve it. The water in the skins smells like it's been there for a while.
