Sorry brother, but you've made your choice.
Pygrado picks up the longbow from his fallen foe and takes a step back to H4 for a clearer shot.
110 feet = exactly 1 range increment; assuming +0 str mod, but if it's above +1 then apply -2 to attack
Attack 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (13) + 8 = 21
Damage 1d8 ⇒ 5
Pygrado shoots the fleeing assassin. Leto fires his wand at Mantis Helmet and deals minimal damage to the man. Jamros withdraws.
The man in the mantis helmet, seeing Jamros back away, spins and delivers brutal wounds to both Caladrius (17 damage) and Martin (17 damage).
Caladrius is unconscious at -2 HP. Martin is no longer stunned and may now act on his turn. According to the stunned condition, Martin will need to pick up his sword and shield before he can use them.
Damage: 1d8 + 6 + 2d6 ⇒ (2) + 6 + (5, 4) = 17
Sabre 2 vs Martin: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (8) + 10 = 18
Damage: 1d8 + 5 + 2d6 ⇒ (6) + 5 + (5, 1) = 17
I'm going to assume that picking up said weapons provokes an attack of opportunity. If this is not the case, then errata what i'm about to do to picking up the weapons and striking the guy
Martin, finally capable of movement again, takes a step back from his assailant (5ft step). He glances around the room and sees that Gareth and caladrius are down. (What do I know about their condition heal check: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (1) + 6 = 7). Noting the condition of the battle, Martin pulls out his long bow and takes a shot at the man standing in front of him.
I'm assuming he's actually human for favored enemy purposes. subtract 2 from dmg/atk/knowledge check if he is not actually human, but merely humanoid.
atk:1d20 + 8 ⇒ (3) + 8 = 11
dmg:1d8 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 2 = 8
What do I know about this guy :
Knowledge local:1d20 + 5 ⇒ (1) + 5 = 6
or nobility if it helps:1d20 + 5 ⇒ (1) + 5 = 6
Wow, beyond epically bad dice rolls.
Pygrado charges into the fray and slashes at mantis helmet. Martin backs away and looses an arrow in said assassin's general direction. Jamros flees (as you can only take a run action in a straight line, you'll have to double move around that corner, which means the furthest you can get is I18). Leto strikes mantis helmet with a pair of glowing blue missiles.
Staggering from all the blows he has suffered this turn, mantis helmet whirls and delivers a vicious strike to Pygrado's chest and neck (14 damage - you're alive until your negative hit points equal or exceed your constitution score). He then falls.
Mantis Helmet saber strike vs Pygrado: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (16) + 12 = 28
Damage: 1d8 + 6 ⇒ (8) + 6 = 14
For the sake of convenience, current party HP totals are at:
Pygrado:(-10/35), Bleeding, dead at -14
Caladrius:(-3/34), Bleeding, dead at -16
Jamros:(11/22), Con damagez
Leto:(14/21), with beautiful, beautiful healing potions.
my apologies over this being quick. Plane about to leave
Leto runs over to the group of fallen men surrounding the body of mantis helmet. He begins to administer his healing potions beginning with the elf that is bleeding out. As he does this the very young man attempts not to touch them as much as possible. He says "we don't have time for much in the way of introductions. My name is Leto Anguis and I need your help. As I was hiding in the little room over there I heard the assassins plans. They are about to kill the king. They were elves dressed in the uniforms of mithril guards. I need your help to stop them I cannot do it alone. As soon as you can stand we need to move. Fast."
Leto appears to have administered a potion of lesser vigor to Pygrado. He will regain consciousness in one minute.
Armor: Weak Transmutation, Weak Illusion
Cloak: Weak Abjuration
Sabre: Weak Transmutation
Punching Dagger: Moderate Abjuration, Weak Evocation, Weak Enchantment
I'm at 5/22
Still silently crying, Jamros runs as fast as he can to Claudius and casts stabilize on him (two rounds to get there, one to cast stabilize). He then uses his last spell slot to heal Gareth.
CMW: 2d8 + 4 ⇒ (5, 1) + 4 = 10 Gareth is up to 2/32
Jamros then detects magic on everything and examining the magical items.
Armor: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (6) + 7 = 13
Cloak: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (16) + 7 = 23
Sabre: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (19) + 7 = 26
Punching Dagger: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (19) + 7 = 26
He then attempts to remove the helmet of the mantis helmet dude.
Appraise on the diamonds: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (10) + 1 = 11
EDIT: Is that dagger small as in for a small creature?
Crap, forgot to post one more thing with the loot.
Also on one of the archers are 2d4 ⇒ (4, 2) = 6 +1 flaming arrows.
The cloaks is a cloak of resistance +1.
The sabre is a Sawtooth Sabre +1.
The dagger is a small, adamantine punching dagger +1. It also appears subject to a conditional break enchantment. Additionally, a wielder can use it to fire an eldritch blast (as the Warlock ability). This eldritch blast can be used every round as a standard action. The ability fires off a single ray at a target within 30 feet, and does 2d6 + 1 damage (attack and damage rolls with the blast gain the benefit of the weapon's enhancement bonus).
As you pick up the dagger, a manic, nasally voice speaks in your head. This is Visran Upplyte, Mining Administrator for Silverkeep. If you're hearing this, I'm probably dead, so, s%++. Anyway, this weapon is a safety measure against the possibility of the golem control orb falling into the wrong hands. If you cannot recover it, use this dagger to destroy it and prevent its use against Silverkeep. Simply plunge the dagger into the orb. The orb is about six inches in diameter, and is made of red glass. It has a symbol of three interlocking triangles on it, just like the hilt of this dagger. Good luck.
It was, indeed, sized for use by a small creature.
As Gareth lies unconscious, he doesn't feel any divine warmth or comfort, but the grasp of darkness setting upon him. He ponders his existence, how he was lost once, but had pulled himself together. He thinks of his family, how he wished he had seen his father one last time. Maybe Peter could have caught a glimpse of the goodness in his heart, the man he had grown up to be. Instead, he lies dying, struck down by a cold, emotionless assassin, someone who profits off of the destruction of life and liberty, just for a few coin. "It can't end this way," Gareth thinks. "Not yet at least. I'll see to it, I can pull through!" Just then, he feels a warmth in his soul as Jamros heals him. The darkness recedes and his eyes open.
The first thing that Gareth sees upon reawaking is a familiar halfling peering over his body. He softly stammers, "J-Jam-Jamros! Thank the heavens!" Despite looking like hell, coughing up blood fairly heavily, Gareth quickly staggers to his feet. "I'll be alright. I'd say I've seen worse before, if it made you feel better. Did everybody else make it?"
On his way up, Gareth notes the body of the mantis helmet beside him and his thankful and appreciative tone changes drastically to anger. He does not wait for an answer to his question and instead spits at the corpse, "You! You thought you could kill me, didn't you? Just like you killed Visran, and all of these people lying around here." He coughs heavily and draws his greatsword, pointing it at the man accusedly. "Like all assassins, you're just a dickless coward who thinks he's special because he can end lives. And you almost got me. But there's one thing you didn't consider. The power of Cayden Cailean compels me to live! And in the end, I stand over your body." He places his foot on the corpse triumphantly, then stares at the corpse for a moment silently before continuing, "But something's not quite right. No, what's missing here, is that the world needs to know the truth about you. You were a dickless coward in life, and now you can be one in death too!"
With that, Gareth brings down his greatsword to the man's crotch, castrating him. The deed done, he wipes the blood off of his sword, sheathes it, and then takes a few steps into the corner of the room where he remains in silence.
Roleplay aside, I would be potentially interested in the mithral chain shirt and definitely interested in the arrows.
And when appropriate, Gareth will look over the diamonds.
Appraise:1d20 ⇒ 8
Also, regarding the action I took in the post above, it is up to Pygrado (and Caladrius, assuming he gets healed :P) if they are conscious when it happens.
As Jamros examines the loot, he pantomimes the uses of the gear. The robe is a Cloak of Resistance +1, the sabre is a Sawtooth Sabre +1. As for the dagger, Jamros's eyes light up as he picks it up. He turns to the wall points it at the wall (assuming the wall is brick or stone or something that won't burn). As he does so, a stream of twirling fire shoots from it, splashing against the wall.
Jamros tries to get the dagger to cure his curse via the break enchantment that is in the dagger, knowing full well that the break enchantment will probably only work on the orb.
UMD: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (20) + 3 = 23
I am still going to call it castration, unless you think a term like genital mutilation would be more appropriate. Shrug.
Leto brings a potion over to Gareth offering it at arms length. It is unclear whether he is uncomfortable around a genital mutilator or just because he is another person. He also hands a potion to Jamros appearing to be equally uncomfortable. "Look I know we just met, and we should collect anything that will help from them, but i need to know, so are you guys in? To save the king that is? I need to know now or I will have to try to stop them by myself." At that thoughts he young man looks less like the powerful man who could shoot fire from his fingertips and more like a scared adolescent trying to look brave in the face of almost certain death in that eventuality.
Gareth snaps out of his silent "moment" in the corner and whirls around towards Leto with a friendly, yet somewhat reserved, grin on his face. He extends his hand to accept the potion and to shake Leto's hand, "Gareth Aldridge, archer of the Silver Guard. Man, is it nice to see a friendly face here for once. I'm sorry you had to see that, kid. I'm not usually one to... y'know..." He awkwardly drinks the potion and gags slightly on its contents. "Let's just say I've been through quite a bit the last few days. But I promise, I don't bite. And, hey, thanks for the potion. I owe you one."
He brushes back his hair, and continues, "Of course we are in to save the king. But first, we need to collect ourselves. We sustained a lot of injury in that last fight. Why don't you tell us what exactly you overheard about their plans while we get ready to hit the trail?"
I believe that should be 11 HP over 11 rounds, so up to HP:13/32
Leto reluctantly shakes Gareth's hand looking pained and nervous as he does so. He quickly withdraws it and takes a position about 7 feet from Gareth. He appears to be trying to keep a distance between himself and everyone.
"'Good. We will need all the help we can get to do this. I was actually able to see them. Three elves and these assassins came down here to keep anyone from raising an alarm and they took some gnome's ring to help them do it. After the king is killed they are planning to destroy the golem control orb with a magical spike. Also that bag of diamonds are worth 15,000gp. It was a tip that they were paid for their services. That was all that I heard before you all entered." Leto looks over at the male rogue laying on the ground. "He should probably be healed by someone."
Your potions are the only healing the party has left, I think.
You also think the weapon will prevent Visran's weaker golems (4 HD or fewer) from attacking you or anyone within 60 feet of you. The smarter or more dangerous golems aren't going to be affected, however.
"Actually" Leto says as he walks over to the injured man a ways a way bringing him a potion, "Upon further thought there was actually only one male elf and one femaie elf and more importantly that dagger that you are holding actually looks like the spike that they were going to use to destroy the orb controlling the golems" As he says this Leto crouches down and pours the potion into Caladrius's mouth.
Sorry about that I am currently traveling. I'm in san fransisco now and only am able to write on my smart phone. By the way later today I am going to be flying for 14 hours so you won't be able to hear from me then. I'll try to post soon after that but I am going to hand over the reigns to chris after today for the next few weeks until the 17th when I will be back from new zealand.
hp:16/22, still has con damage, would really rather the whole mission thing could just wait until morning... :P
Jamros perks up when he hears Leto mention a spike that could destroy the control sphere. He waves it around, miming something about hearing something from the dagger.
Martin rises from tending to pygrado, and watches Gareth disfigure a corpse. From the look on Martin's face you can see that he is not exactly happy with this.
"So that's what Cayden Cailean sees as fit treatment for a fallen soldier..."
Wiping a mix of his own and Pygrado's blood off his hand Martin turns to Leto and extends a hand.
"Thank you for your help back there. I don't know if we would have made it out alive from this whole business if it hadn't been for your help. Now what's this business about the king being assassinated? I use to be a member of the mithral guard... I mean.." Martin stops himself for a second, and then continues "I mean to say that, I'm familiar with the way that the Mithral guard operate. Those let into the mithral guard are well investigated, and the post is usually handed down through the family. There is no way they would let three unknowns near the king, wearing mithral guard apparel or not. So calm down a second and take a breather. How did you get down here in the first place?"
While Martin's words may seem to offer confidence in the mithral guard, his tone suggests that he may not be as confident in them as he at first glance appears. It seems as if even mentioning the mithral guard troubles him a bit.
Sense Motive:+4 mod means I auto succeed.
In response to Martin's comment, Gareth mutters under his breath, "No, that's what I see fit as recognition of a murderous bastard who only brought pain into this world. And he was NOT a soldier."
As Martin talks, Gareth places the 6 flaming arrows into his quiver. I'm assuming this is okay with everyone.
His eyes notably widen at Leto's mention of 15,000 gold pieces worth of diamonds.
Unofficial Loot List:
2x +1 Sawtooth Sabers (Pygrado)
Small Dagger (Jamros)
Cloak of Resistance +1: (Unclaimed, Gareth passes: higher priority to those of us with poor saves)
Mithral Chain Shirt: (Unclaimed, Gareth potentially interested) <--- Still unidentified, get those spellcraft checks ready
2x MWK Comp Longbow (+1 Str): (Unclaimed)
MWK Shortsword (Unclaimed)
6x +1 Flaming Arrows (Gareth)
Diamonds (To be split?)
Edit:Whoops, my confusion. Fixed it to 6 arrows.
Okay, as ML has now given me the go-ahead to start running Leto while he is away...
"Here, let me see that for a moment," Leto says, grabbing and examining the chain shirt. "Neat, it looks like it's magical and changes its appearance to suit any occasion. Lets you blend in with different crowds, that sort of thing. Doesn't change your appearance, though. Hmm, still, handy for an assassin, I guess."
It's a +1 glamered mithral chain shirt.
Leto Spellcraft on Armor: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (18) + 9 = 27
Now that he is no longer academically examining an item and suddenly becomes aware that the focus of the group is on him, he seems to wilt slightly. "I, um, was working down here, investigating a newly opened dig site. Well, I say down here, but really, I was in one of the main mining tunnels. As my guide was showing me the way to the site, the golems went crazy and started killing everyone. I ran with the others and ended up in here. I don't know how long it's been, but every exit seems blocked by the golems. Between the horses down there," he points to the floor beneath you, "and a legion of them over there," he points to the stairs up in the northeast corner of the room, "we couldn't get out. The gnome said he was working on a way to fix things, and then a ton of golems passed through to the exit marked "escape tunnel," irony of ironies. By that point, I was exhausted and snuck into that storage room to take a nap. I woke up to the sounds of those assassins and the two elves slaughtering everyone. They didn't see me, and so I hid. I'm no match for them. The elves seemed much more dangerous than those three assassins did, but now they're going to try to kill the king. We need to find some way to stop them. Wait, what are you guys dong here?"
Leto wasn't invited down into the mines. In fact, he snuck in and seems to be desperately trying to distract you from this fact.
So I'm at 0hp?
Pygrado wakes up somewhere in the middle of that explanation, woozy from low blood pressure.
Sense Motive 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (3) + 4 = 7 haha, nope
Wurr trying t'... warn the city... 'bout the 'ttack coming. You the guy with the snakes? Who's side you on? We killed our las'... prisoner, so you better behave.
He slides briefly out of consciousness and then wakes again. Anyone gah some water?
sense motive:1d20 + 4 ⇒ (7) + 4 = 11
"And how do you suggest we leave? You said all of the exits are blocked, and I dont think we can take another fight like that today. I'm as much for saving the king as the next man, but theres nothing we can do for em' if we wind up dead."
Well, not staggered but still in no condition for a fight.
Well, maybe those who're less injured should go ahead, warn the city. The rest of us will catch up when we can.
Loot wise, Pygrado definitely takes the sabres, and he'd also looove the chain shirt, though others may have a higher claim. Anyone who wants them can take his +1 shortsword and shortsword, and if he gets the armor his +1 leather will go into the pile as well. Also, when he gets up and moving he will claim the mantis helmet and any other Red Mantis parephenalia from the fallen assassins.
"Why would we split up? Sounds dangerous to me, especially if that dagger is supposed to protect us from those smaller golems. We're all hurt, so we gotta stick together. Say, Leto, did you see if there's anything of interest in that office over there?"
SM:1d20 + 4 ⇒ (18) + 4 = 22 asdflasdjkfaskeflajse
RE: The armor.
I don't really care either way. The reason why I've been pushing towards it is because Gareth is going to switch to a Holy Gun archetype soon and light armor is the only armor proficiency I'll have. It looks to me like we'd both gain 1 AC from wearing it (could be wrong), and then the passive is up in the air: probably more suited for you, but has its applications for anyone really.
The other assassins wore non-masterwork leather armor styled to look like the uniform of the Red Mantis. Neither wore gloves or helmets, or had any other bling of contract killing. The man in the mantis helmet turns out to have been a half-orc (big surprise), but the mantis helmet and sabres are the only Red Mantis gear he carried. He wore normal clothes under the chain shirt, and the helmet is a basic leather-and-cloth affair that folds up easily.
Leto says, "There were a lot of powder-filled sacks in the room in which I hid. The room at the end of the hall was the gnome's office, and the other room had a lot of alchemical stuff in it."
At this point, you hear a loud impact from the metal door labeled "Escape Tunnel."
Retcon: As Pygrado starts to pick up the Red Mantis paraphernalia, Gareth shakes his head at him, "Pygrado, come on, man. Don't wear that crap. You're better than that. You don't want to be like them."
When Gareth hears the noise from the Escape Tunnel, he says excitedly, "S!$~! We gotta get out of here. C'mon, let's go towards the palace! We gotta save the king!" He starts to try to move the party towards the steps to the palace.
