Caladrius and Gareth burst from hiding. Caladrius runs across the clearing to the other grove of trees, in full view of the halflings even when he arrives. You ran in front of the log. You do not have cover or concealment, so no stealth for you... yet.

Gareth fires two arrows at the halfling in H28. The first flies high and misses entirely, while the second strikes the halfling high in the back. The halfling falls over, dead.

Martin, there are a couple of problems with your actions. First, there isn't a halfling in G28. Second, you can't charge through other character's squares (you go before Jamros, so he hadn't moved yet). All of this is moot, as Gareth killed the nearest halfling to your desired target. To save time, I'm redirecting your charge against the one in D27.

Martin charges the halfling nearest him, cutting him open from shoulder to stomach. The halfling collapses, dead.

The forest fires grow, engulfing the positions of Eleri, Caladrius and Gareth (5 fire damage to Eleri, 6 fire damage to Caladrius, and 4 fire damage to Gareth. Rolled in initiative order). On the upside, Caladrius is now concealed by the flames, and hides among them.

Seeing the arrow strike one of their number, and Martin carve another wide open, the halflings reshuffle their positions and open fire. Six of them take aim at Martin, focus intently on him, and pull the triggers on their weapons. Five fire, while one explodes. Of those five, four hit you (27 damage from 4 hits, which I believe knocks you unconscious). The halfling whose weapon exploded lies still upon the ground.

Startled, the halfling who leapt to G28 fires wildly at Pygrado, striking him in the leg (3 damage), before realizing he just shot the one person who was surrendering and looking ashamed for it.

The black-clad halfling retreats to F35 and draws a smaller tube, calling out to you "Come out of the forest with your hands up and we'll let you live! This is your last chance!" Turning to the halflings, he cries out "Stop them from escaping, and for the love of Pelor, don't shoot the sodding prisoners, Hugo!"

In the distance, you can see that two of the eagles who bombed you have landed at the Vista, while the other eagles have begun to circle back around towards the battle.

Suddenly, a large green reptilian creature flies overhead, streaking towards the Vista. It is about 60 feet up, and on its back is another black-clad halfling.

Knowledge (Nature) DC 21:
The beast is some sort of Chupacabra. These nigh-mythical beasts are often believed to suck the blood from humanoids and livestock alike. This on is much larger than the descriptions would have you believe, however.

Pygrado:
The halfling on its back is the same one you saw in the forest.

Rules Quibbling:
I assigned 30% miss chance to Gareth's shots because he is firing through a forest fire at the halflings. In addition to the difficulty of aiming through a fire, there would also be significant heat distortion. According to the PFSRD, DMs are encouraged to tweak the miss chance percentile from concealment to fit the situation, and a 30% miss chance seems right to me for this situation.

Actually, the miss chance turned out to be a good thing for Gareth. His first shot would have missed due to cover from the horses anyway, but thanks to the miss chance from concealment, he avoided drilling an arrow up his horse's ass.

I track fire damage and location by expanding the size of the flames when appropriate. The fires were due to expand this round, so I just used MapTools' size up feature for the flame tokens. This change brought Eleri, Caladrius, and Gareth into the new flame damage areas, so they took damage from them.

Don't shoot, I'm unarmed. I'm just a diplomat returning to Silverkeep.

I ready an action to drop prone if they start shooting, hopefully also getting cover behind the horses.

Caladrius is trying to close the distance to the halflings without getting shot and place himself behind at least some sort of cover. Bluff:1d20 + 7 ⇒ (15) + 7 = 22 -> hopefully enough to buy me some time. Should I make a second Bluff check for the lie about who I am?

What skill would give me information on the conventions towards prisoners of war in this world? So that I can plan what to do if we actually wind up captured.

The one bluff is fine. Local, History, or Nobility can all tell you things about war and practices regarding prisoners of war in the area. What, exactly, they can tell you I'm not yet sure, but I'll let you know as appropriate to your check when I make the next update (read: once I figure out the specifics).

Pygrado is sitting this one out. He will delay until further notice.

Apologies for how long it took for me to update this - I've been really busy, and this post took forever to type up.

Eleri moves west, and uses the horses for cover as she launches an impressive burst of electricity. Her blast shocks four halflings, killing one.

Caladrius moseys toward the halflings, ready to drop prone if they move against him.

Gareth fires two arrows at the halfling in J31 in an attempt to finish it off, but his shots instead strike Eleri in the lower back and right leg (8 damage from 2 hits).

Sorry Eleri, but MapTools traces the most direct line from Gareth to his target through your square, so you are providing cover, and due to the line drawn by MapTools, do not have cover against his shots.

Martin gurgles, bleeding out on the ground.

Jamros advances and looses a blast at two halflings, igniting and killing one, scorching the other.

Pygrado continues to lie prone.

The lizardlike beast continues to fly southeast toward the vista, its rider fiddling with a small metal tube.

The halflings in A29-F31 reload their weapons, before slightly repositioning themselves in a well-drilled maneuver.

The halfling in G28 drops his now-empty weapon and runs to Martin's body, dragging him away from the flames.

"Like hell you are!" Shouts the black-clad halfling in F35. "Shoot them!"

In response, the halfling in H32 focuses on and fires at Caladrius. Prepared for this possibility, Caladrius dives to the ground, albeit not fast enough to avoid the bullet that strikes him in the arm (6 damage).

In response to the spells of Eleri and Jamros, the nearby halflings scatter before turning to fire at the dangerous spellcasters. One of those wounded by Eleri (firing from J29) aims at her and fires a brutally-placed shot into her chest (11 damage, which I believe knocks you unconscious).

The halflings who moved to L30 and K33 both focus on and fire at jamros, one hitting (10 damage).

People, please track your current hit points in your posts. This will help me know who can survive a hit - I have no idea how many hit points Eleri had before this turn, so in the interest of not killing her you may negate the damage taken from Gareth's arrows, if the damage she has taken this round would kill her (rather than just knocking her unconscious). This is a once-only thing. I may not be so merciful in the future.

Caladrius or Knowledge (Local) DC 15:
While no formal treaties or other agreements regarding prisoners of war are recognized in this region, the following guidelines are generally adhered to:
1) Prisoners of war are kept in good health (fed & watered, above 0 hit points, provided with shelter from elements) whenever possible.
2) Prisoners are usually released at the end of hostilities, although nobles are often kept as hostages for a time.
3) Prisoners are not to be harmed by their captors unless they attempt escape or offer violence against the captors.

Rules Quibbling:
The officer (black-clad halfling hanging out well away from you lot in F35) got two separate +4 competence bonuses to his sense motive check against you, Caladrius. First, you insulted them a moment ago. Second, your allies have been blasting away at the halflings. Neither of these things help you present yourself as a diplomat.

I don't see how Eleri grants the halfling cover. E in K26, H in J31, M in M21. Martin gets to pick which corner of the square he fires from. He picks the southeast corner. There is no line that goes from that corner to J31 and through Eleri's square. However, cover is granted by the pony and then by Jamros (who is small, so maybe since he is in front of the pony he doesn't actually grant cover please don't hurt me?) (not the best shot, if I do say so myself, Martin). So, it doesn't seem to me that Eleri should have gotten hit. It seems like she should have 5 HP and a turn. I'll post my turn this afternoon and have a contingency plan for if I take damage from Martins arrows (this would be a shift from 20HP (full health) to 2HP in one turn....)

First, they're Gareth's arrows. Second, he never said which corner he was aiming from. I always assume that the character fires from the nearest corner of their square to their target (i. e. northeast) when the player does not explicitly specify. The line from the northeast corner does go through Eleri's square. I anticipated this argument, which is why I gave Eleri the safety blanket against fatal wounding due to Gareth's arrows. Further, I use MapTools to gauge lines for the purposes of determining cover, and it drew the line through her square.

HP: 33/45, Smite: 2/2, LoH: 3/6

Eesh... really? I have to specify which corner I'm aiming from specifically? That's news to me. Eleri moved into the square after I posted my action, so am I supposed to look at where she moved directly and then say "Oh, by the way, Gareth would aim from this corner of the square to avoid hitting his ally (which he would certainly do in any kind of real life scenario)."

I also assume that a trained archer would go for the clear shot on the target and not aim right through his ally. I've never had to say specifically what part of the square I'm aiming from to avoid cover based friendly fire, especially in a play by post game where people post their actions out of order.

We can't get a g&+!@+n break this combat...
Posting my action when I feel like it

M Human Paladin 2, Ranger 6

Sheesh people, how dare you not memorize the cover rules like me. there is no matter of choice in the rules unless the creature occupies more than one sqaure, in which case they get to choose the square they are using for cover rules. IRC if a line can be drawn from [b]any[b] corner of the shooters square to [b]any[b] corner of the targets square and that line is obstructed than cover is granted (+4 bonus on AC and +2 bonus on ref saves). However if a creature has cover, and more than half of the target is visible than they receive partial cover (+2 AC). Similarly, if the thing granting cover is a creature then they only provide soft cover, which does not aid to a reflex save.

the half cover rules is by DM discretion. Similiarly, RAR you do not technically hit the thing providing cover, with your attacks, however many DMs (Me amoung them) say that if an attack misses specifically because of the cover bonus than it hits the cover instead (or makes an attack at the same modifier against that target)

basically, Gareth gets no choice in his line of fire, but it is up to CDs discretion whether or not Eleri is covering half of the halfling (lol) and therefore provides either a +2 or a +4 bonus. As a side note, this was why i was depending on a halfling being next to me, to provide the +2 Ac bonus, which ultimately lead to my downfall, lol.

HP: 36/36 Spells: lvl1 6/7, lvl2 5/5

Memorized Martin...? :P

PFSRD wrote:
To determine whether your target has cover from your ranged attack, choose a corner of your square. If any line from this corner to any corner of the target's square passes through a square or border that blocks line of effect or provides cover, or through a square occupied by a creature, the target has cover (+4 to AC).

If the word "choose" doesn't indicate a choice, I don't know what does. It is pretty clear that you get to choose your corner and you have to be able to hit every corner of at least one of their squares. The diagram in the rule book supports this interpretation. It appears to me that the rules would be better written and have the same intent if they read:

Hypothetical Rule wrote:
To determine whether your target has cover from your ranged attack, examine each corner of your square. If there does not exist a corner of your square such that there are no lines from that corner to each of the corners of the target square that pass through an object that gives cover, then the target has cover.

It is terribly clear why the rules are not written this way: the rule book is not intended to read as a math proof. I also think requiring players to pick a corner before they even know the shape of the battlefield is at the least unfair. Choosing sub-optimal play for a player in an extremely basic way (such as picking a corner to shoot from) is really just requiring them to make amendments to their actions ad-infinitum: "And if a silver dragon appears in square H7, I'll shoot at it from the northwest corner of my square. And if it appears in H8, I'll take a five foot step to the east and shoot from the northwest corner of my square to avoid hitting my ally. And if a white dragon..." etc.

I also have thoughts about the fact that they get damaged at all, but those are better fit for the ooc thread. You can expect those soon (I think this is way more a personal DM choice, but I've still got thoughts on it).

Whew. Now for Jamros' action:
If he is down to 2 HP from getting hit by Gareth's arrows... "AH!!!! They're a comin' up from behind!!!"
In either case...
Jamros blasts both of the halflings in front of him with another vortex of fire (26J and 30L are both in 15ft cone, maptools doesn't do aoe quite right I've found.) Damage: 3d4 ⇒ (3, 1, 3) = 7, on fire for 1d4 ⇒ 4 and 1d4 ⇒ 1 turns if they fail their saves. He then moves to do his best to hide behind the horse to his right.

HP: 2 (if hit by Gareth) or 10 (if not hit by Gareth)

Ah, crap, I did do that wrong (was looking at Eleri's AC rather than that of the halfling, I think - serves me right for trying to coherently post after 2 AM...). Also, Jamros, this is one of those situations where the rules for the tabletop game don't translate well in play by posts when people don't post in initiative order.

Retcon: Both arrows missed Eleri (and all other cover) and harmlessly impact the ground some distance away.

Okay, argument over. Move on.

HP: 33/45, Smite: 2/2, LoH: 3/6

Cool beans. Clarification: does this mean that Eleri is now up?

Also, I will try to be more clear about where I'm shooting from, from now on to avoid cover.

HP: 36/36 Spells: lvl1 6/7, lvl2 5/5

I think that the question "when do you hit cover?" is still an interesting one, even if this issue is resolved. In the ooc, I've offered two mechanical ways to answer that both answer "sometimes" that I think you can use for both tabletop and online. If you guys have thoughts on them, please feel free to share. I don't want that discussion to turn into one about what rules we should use for this game on this issue, because this is one of those problems that is really just up to the DM. But I think that they are interesting to consider for me as a possible future DM (don't get excited, that isn't going to happen until after I graduate, if ever).

Just went over the whole saga of the Vista group - by my reckoning, Eleri should have been at 16 hitpoints going into this fight (reduced to 5 in previous battle, healed 4 points by resting and 7 points by Gareth). She took 5 points of damage from the fire and 11 from that bullet, reducing her to zero hitpoints. She is conscious, but staggered (one move or standard action, standard or strenuous actions cause unconsciousness and bleeding).

Actions (in initiative order):
Jamros (23) - Blasting
Pygrado (19) - Lying Prone & Delayed until further notice
DM (16+)
Eleri (16-) - Unresolved due to rules confusion
Caladrius (14) - Unresolved
Gareth (7) - Unresolved

Waiting on Eleri, Caladrius, Gareth, and (potentially) Pygrado...

Male Human Rogue [Investigator] 1/Dragonfire Adept 3

Caladrius crawls away from the flames under the hail of fire from the halflings, remaining on the ground and under cover. Certainly unwilling to get up until he understands exactly what sort of weapons he is being shot at with.

Well I'm glad everything got sorted out. Sorry about the delay; I was busy taking the GRE.

After taking the brutal shot to the chest, Eleri struggles to stay on her feet and briefly considers just laying herself down for a nap. Upon receiving the burst of vitality from Gareth (Delaying until right after Gareth), however, her spirit returns and she moves to I26, casting Burst Shock Arc again, targeting the corner shared by square D&E - 30&31 (Should be 30 feet from the top-right corner of I26), affecting the halflings in C30, D31, E32 and F31.

Damage: 3d4 ⇒ (2, 2, 3) = 7
Reflex save for half damage, DC 16

Fair enough. Also, Pygrado, I think you're at 2 hit points (you got shot for three points two turns ago now).

Caladrius crawls to a new position and Gareth heals Eleri, who then runs and blasts the halfling formation to the north of you, killing two of their number.

Martin bleeds some more.

Jamros moves forward and looses a blast of flame at the halflings in J29 and L30, but the two once more weather the assault (second successful save for both of them - they're still up!).

Pygrado crawls east - away from the flames.

In response to Jamros' onslaught, the halflings in J29 and L30 drop their tubes and move toward you, drawing short swords as they come. They move to flank Jamros (standing in K26 and M26, respectively).

Jamros, to save time I am rolling your AoO Touch of Flame for you - if you would do something else, let me know and we'll change it. Jamros' hand is suddenly wreathed in flame and he swings it at the halfling in K26, but the halfling merely dodges back a step before closing in with his sword. Both halflings attempt to stab Jamros, and while Jamros is able to dodge the blow from K26, M26 stabs Jamros deeply in the shoulder (13 damage, 1 Dex damage - confirmed crit with precision damage from Precise Strike).

The halfling in E28 draws his own short sword and stands atop Martin, holding the blade to his throat and calling out to you "Surrender or I'll kill your friend!"

Meanwhile, having seen Eleri just kill more of their number, the halfling in B29 levels his weapon at her and fires. His shot is perfectly placed, missing all cover and piercing straight through her tongue (no joke - confirmed critical result of "tongue piercing." From a musket, that's too funny to pass up. Anyway, 9 damage, 1 con damage, and 50% spell failure chance for verbal spells).

The halfling in C30 runs up to Pygrado and levels his musket at him, saying "Don't move!" Meanwhile, the one in E32 runs to H29 in the hopes of getting an easier shot at Eleri. He aims at her and... Caladrius's readied action triggers.

Caladrius looses a searing burst of flame from his mouth, catching the halflings in F27 and H29 in its area, along with Pygrado. Pygrado sees the blast coming too late and takes the full brunt of the blast (nat 1 on your save - 6 fire damage). Both halflings manage to dodge away from the worst of the blast and are merely scorched (nat 20s on their saves, but F27 was hurt by Eleri too...).

The halfling in H29 sights on his new target: Caladrius. He is too shocked by the blast of flame that struck him a moment ago to aim properly, however, and the shot flies high into the forest.

The halflings in H32 and K33 reload their weapons.

The black-clad halfling moves to I32 and calls out, "Enough! Surrender to us and we can save your fallen friends!"

Meanwhile, in the distance you can see that the reptilian creature and its rider have landed at the Vista on the far side of the boulder.

Seeing the fate of the battle laid out clearly, Gareth grits his teeth, drops his bow, and throws his hands up in the air. "Alright. We surrender. You tiny bastards better tend to them quickly though, starting with that swordsman." He nods his head towards Martin.

Did they really get 5/14 nat 20's? Wow.

For future reference, what is the rule for attempting to not take a readied action if conditions change (ie allies crawling in range, sorry Pygrado). I have always seen that you get an Int check with a DC proportionate to how complicated the triggering condition was. Is this a real rule or just a house rule I have always used?

Also I completely forgot when the battle started, can I identify any unit insignia or other heraldry on the halflings. Knowledge(Nobility):1d20 + 7 ⇒ (16) + 7 = 23

Caladrius sees Martin Surrender out of the corner of his eye, leaving himself as the only one still fighting, an idea which does not appeal to him in this particular situation. He slowly rises to kneeling with his hands raised. I surrender too. If any of our wounded die, I can assure you that the nobles of both Silverkeep and Goldcrest will hear of the way that <unit name if I made my check> treats its honorably surrendered prisoners. As he surrenders, he ejects the daggers from his sleeves and throws a handful of alchemical items to the ground from a pouch on his bandoleer.I'm disarming myself now, of both weapons and spell components. Don't shoot

Caladrius is not lying about surrendering this time but the Bluff is for trying to make them think that he is a spellcaster, which at first glance he looks like, dressed in robes and very light armor. The implication being that the items he threw to the ground were the contents of his spell component pouch.1d20 + 7 ⇒ (20) + 7 = 27

Readied actions typically happen. This isn't something I have actually thought out, so let me get back to you on that DC, okay? I think some sort of check should be involved, but let me work out a system for it.

Caladrius OR Knowledge (Nobility) DC 20:
The insignia on these halflings' armor suggests that they are with the Black Talon mercenary company, a little-known group of mercenaries believed to be based out of Carron, a reclusive state on the western edge of Windrip Isle. You have heard little of their tactics previously, but it now appears that they act as mounted infantry and employ advanced weapons and well-coordinated tactics in battle.

They are up even with the 1/2 damage? so these guys have exactly 7HP... dang.

The whole benefit of readied actions is that you get to interrupt an action, because you were prepared for that thing to happen. So you can't really switch out your readied condition. The only real way to do that, is delay your action, and then choose to act right afterwards. Its just another pro/con of the special action. Because no special attack should be flat out better than a basic attack, there needs to be some trade off made. That being said, there are certain actions which are better under certain conditions.

Male Human Rogue [Investigator] 1/Dragonfire Adept 3

It wouldn't be switching out the condition of your readied action, I am talking about losing your readied action and not taking it when the condition is met if, for instance, your ally has moved into the area of your AoE since you readied the action as per Adjudicating the Readied Action page 25 of the 3.5 DMG

Tongue piercing? I guess I should have Eleri dye and spike her hair to take full advantage of this new punk look.

Thanks to the constitution damage, Eleri is dropped to -1 hp and collapses.

Oh, relax. It'll heal when next you receive magical healing or someone performs a DC 15 heal check on you.

I'll have an update for you in a couple hours.

"All right, cuff those two and stabilize the fallen, both ours and theirs." The black-clad halfling calls out to his troops. "Then move them away from the fire." He then oversees the process, his smaller tube in hand and ready for use.

Unless you choose to resist, the halflings will put you in manacles. Let me know if you try to stop them, but I'll assume you don't for the time being.

The halfling in M26 proceeds to manacle Gareth's hands behind him, while the one in K26 moves to J26 and does the same to Caladrius. Meanwhile, the other halflings draw bandages and begin applying them to the fallen. On application, you see a faint burst of blue energy envelop the bandage, and the bandaged individual begins to breathe more easily.

Spellcraft DC 15:
The halflings are carrying blessed bandages, which allow even those untrained in healing to stabilize fallen comrades with ease (auto-stabilization, but no healing).

Pygrado and Martin are bandaged this round. They stabilize.

We're still on initiative for the moment. I'd like to hear from Caladrius and Gareth regarding whether they choose to resist, and if so, how.

Caladrius looks down his nose at the halflings come to chain him up both literally and figuratively, leaving his hands up in the air where the halflings cannot reach them. As a gentleman I have given my surrender. There is no need for common bindings, I will not escape or act against you, as that would mean abandoning my companions to your mercy.

Maybe Diplomacy?:1d20 + 7 ⇒ (10) + 7 = 17 -> Presumably that does not help much.

I make no other resistance besides keeping my hands out of reach and see how much force the halflings use.

HP: 33/45, Smite: 2/2, LoH: 3/6

Have all of the halflings dropped their weapons and are holding bandages/manacles?

H29 and K30 both have the longer weapons trained on you. The officer (J29) has his smaller weapon aimed you as well.

HP: 33/45, Smite: 2/2, LoH: 3/6

Gareth reluctantly allows the halfling to manacle him. "Hey, hey. Take it easy with those. I've surrendered."

He adds, "What about the horses? Are you going to take good care of them, too?"

Eleri and Jamros both bleed some more (1 point each).

"Don't worry - we'll see to them." The officer says to Gareth, before walking over to Caladrius. "I have known too many 'gentlemen' to believe you will not attempt to escape, Caladrius" the officer says with a slight smile. He thrusts his hand at you and mutters something. A translucent blue ray shoots forth from his hand and strikes Caladrius full in the chest (15 nonlethal damage - you can still attempt the checks because they are triggered before you lose consciousness).

Job done, the halfling in M26 turns and applies a bandage to Jamros (stabilized). The halfling in J26 says "Thanks. That should make things easier," and proceeds to manacle Caladrius's unconscious body. The halfling in K30 moves over to Gareth and keeps his weapon trained on the paladin while the one in H31 drops his weapon and begins bandaging his fallen comrade in H30. The soldier in H29 applies a bandage to the fallen halfling in H28.

The halflings who administered to Pygrado and Martin drag them away from the flames.

Last man standing! Wooooo!

Gareth looks in awe as the officer fires the ray at Caladrius. He mutters to himself, "That was probably for the best."

He then says to the officer, "Where will you be taking us? Oh, and, I mean, I know I'm your prisoner and all, but I'm really curious... What are those tube things you were firing at us?"

Diplomacy to improve attitude/have them actually respond to my questions:1d20 + 8 ⇒ (8) + 8 = 16

Eleri stabilization check: 1d20 - 3 ⇒ (15) - 3 = 12 Success!

The officer bends down slightly and bandages Eleri's wounds (already stabilized, but this way is still better). "We'll keep you here until the regular forces can take over guarding you. As for the rest, I really can't say." He turns to the halfling pointing his weapon at you and says, "Victor, escort him away from the forest - we'll need to move the prisoners and horses away from the fire." He turns and shouts to the halfling dragging Pygrado, "Once you secure him, head over to the Vista and ask the commander if he needs any assistance clearing the charges! We're firmly in control over here!"

Gareth, the halfling guarding you nudges you with his weapon. He seems to want you to walk eastward.

The halflings manacle Pygrado, Martin and Jamros, while their compatriots continue bandaging their fallen allies.
