HP: 33/45, Smite: 2/2, LoH: 3/6

According to my calculations, it is 8:04 AM in Jishou, China. Clarky Bedazzle Danger Basil will be up soon!

Male Human Rogue [Investigator] 1/Dragonfire Adept 3

And I'm up...

Perception:1d20 + 10 ⇒ (14) + 10 = 24

Of course they're trying to burn down the forest, although I'm kind of flattered that they would go to all that trouble just for us. Caladrius rolls his eyes answering Eleri's question.

To the charges, we can at least block the canyon if we cannot set them off at the appropriate time. Gentlemen...and lady, with me!

Pygrado, unless I am mistaken our horses are at the vista which is not very far away, so we have to go back there anyway.

HP 42/43

I was pretty sure they were at the camp...

Your horses are to the east, just beyond the forest's edge.

Pygrado:
OH CRAP! The forest around you is on fire!

Gareth's arrow strikes the bird in the rear, causing it to squawk angrily and fly erratically for a moment, but it continues to fly away, unhindered by its injuries. Martin's arrow misses as the bird banks to one side.

Pygrado and anyone who emerges from the forest heading east:
As you emerge from the forest, you see four more birds, hovering about fifteen feet above the ground. Teams of halflings rappel down to the ground while holding long metal tubes. Each halfling wears leather armor, carries a short sword, a long metal tube, and wears a bandolier.

Map

Pygrado:
Four of the halflings level their tubes at you and squeeze underslung triggers. Three of the four tubes spout a flash of flame and smoke, and erupt with a loud Crack! One shot strikes you deeply in your left shoulder (Confirmed Critical - 5 damage, 5 dex damage, 4 str damage), one misses entirely, and one is caught harmlessly by your armor.
The halfling whose tube did not fire loudly shouts "Dammit!"

From the east, you hear three loud Cracks! And a shouted "Dammit!" You do not recognize the voice.

Map

DM Rolls:
E30 Attack: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (20) + 5 = 25
E30 Confirmation: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (14) + 5 = 19
Crit Deck 1: 1d52 ⇒ 22 Ruptured Spleen or Muscle Severed
Crit Deck 2: 1d52 ⇒ 42 My Teef! or Bleeder
Crit Deck 3: 1d52 ⇒ 50 Shield Smack or Penetrating Wound
E30 Damage: 1d10 ⇒ 5
E30 Dex Damage: 1d6 ⇒ 5
E30 Str Damage: 1d6 ⇒ 4
F30 Attack: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (2) + 5 = 7 Misfire!
I31 Attack: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (8) + 3 = 11
J31 Attack: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (14) + 3 = 17

HP: 33/45, Smite: 2/2, LoH: 3/6

Hearing the loud cracks, Gareth runs over to investigate.

Double Move to G14, or if Caladrius stays put, F14

Male Human Rogue [Investigator] 1/Dragonfire Adept 3

If the horses are east, which way is the Vista then? Also did anyone follow Caladrius when he headed in the direction of the Vista, because if no one did, he is not actually going to go that way alone.

Southeast of you. The forest you are in stands northwest of the vista, which is on the north side of the gorge.

Also, to clarify questions of visibility, you may open the emergence spoiler once you have moved east of column 19 on the map (in column 20+).

Female Human Sorceror (Sage) 3

Eleri moves to G21 and, seeing what is immediately outside the forest, decides to move back and take cover behind the nearest tree.

Male Human Rogue [Investigator] 1/Dragonfire Adept 3

Calarius moves to the southeast, towards the Vista, but upon reaching K20 he sees what is going on beyond the forest and dives for cover behind the large fallen log starting in J20, and motions Martin and Gareth to join him and plan their breakout from the forest.

HP: 33/45, Smite: 2/2, LoH: 3/6

As Gareth sees both Eleri and Caladrius back off in shock upon reaching the clearing, he asks, "What in the hells is going on over there?"

Male Human Rogue [Investigator] 1/Dragonfire Adept 3

Goldcrest soldiers, twelve of them. Some sort of halfling aerial scouts. Stay down. Caladrius says softly to Gareth as he approaches, motioning for him to be quiet.

M Human Paladin 2, Ranger 6

Double move to E22

Just waiting on Jamros and Pygrado...

HP: 36/36 Spells: lvl1 6/7, lvl2 5/5

If Jamros hears Cladius's warning, he will reload his xbow move to E18 and stealth 1d20 + 12 - 5 ⇒ (15) + 12 - 5 = 22.

HP 42/43

S#!t. And ow.

Seeing no better chance to flee than on horseback, Pygrado grunts at the injury and attempts to get on the nearest horse.

5-foot shift diagonal (free)
Sheathe first sabre (swift; quick draw)
Sheathe second sabre (move)
Ride check for swift-mount (modified by dex damage) 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 1 = 6
Mount (move)

With his injured shoulder, it takes him longer than he'd like to pull himself into the saddle, but he makes it there.

C'mon, we've got to get the hell out of here!

Eleri and Caladrius move to see what the source of the commotion is, immediately retreating into hiding once they do.

Gareth runs to catch up with the others, but is still well away from the action.

Martin runs into the open to take stock of the situation.

Hearing Caladrius’ shouted warning, Jamros takes cover a little way inside the clearing and readies his crossbow.

Sadly, Pygrado, quick draw does not hasten your ability to sheathe weapons. Luckily, you need only one free hand to mount a horse.
Also, would you please track your current HP either in your profile or in your posts? It would make things a lot easier for me if you would do so.

Feeling his injuries, Pygrado sheathes one sabre and clumsily clambers atop the nearest horse.

The forest continues to burn. Caladrius takes 1d6 ⇒ 2 points of fire damage as the bushes he is hiding in ignite.

Caladrius, Martin and Pygrado:
While the birds fly off – those that bombed the forest continue east, whereas those that dropped off the halflings continue north – the halflings move in.

Seeing Martin emerge from the forest, the halfling in C34 points at him and shouts, "There's another of them! Fire!"

The halfling in C34 runs to C30, the halfling in D34 runs to D30, the one in E31 runs to F28, and the one in F31 runs to G28. All four level their tubes at Martin and squeeze the underslung triggers. Three of the four tubes spurt flame and smoke, and Martin is struck by three small lead pellets (18 damage from three hits). The first halfling, whose weapon did not fire, curses loudly.

The halflings in E30, F30, I31 and J31 reload their weapons, having shot at Pygrado a moment ago. E30 steps to F31, while F30 steps to G31. I32 and J32 dash to H30 and I30, respectively, and level their weapons at Pygrado. Both squeeze the triggers, and both weapons fire. One bullet grazes Pygrado's cheek (1 damage), while the other scores a shallow hit on the horse in I27-J28 (2 damage).

"He's tryin' to escape! Stop him!" One of the halflings shouts. The halflings in G36-H37 advance in a line from F33 to I33 and fire at Pygrado. All four weapons fire, but three miss as the halflings deliberately aim cautiously to avoid hitting their allies. One shot strikes Pygrado in the leg (3 damage).

The halfling in D35 shouts, "You're outmatched! Surrender immediately and you will be treated honorably as prisoners of war!"

Map

From beyond the treeline you hear numerous loud Cracks!, some cursing, and cries of "There's another of them! Fire!", "He's tryin' to escape! Stop him!", and "You're outmatched! Surrender immediately and you will be treated honorably as prisoners of war!"

Map

Anyone who moves into column 20+:
You see a number of halflings, armed with long metal tubes, spread throughout the area. Several of them are busily loading powder and lead balls into the tubes.

Map

H33 attack vs Pygrado: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (5) + 5 = 10 Miss
I33 attack vs Pygrado: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (3) + 5 = 8 Miss

HP: 33/45, Smite: 2/2, LoH: 3/6

Gareth runs to L21 trying to split between the two flaming bushes (trying to avoid damage by running through bushes, if this is not possible, then oh well). He takes a peak at the scene and curses under his breath.

HP: 36/36 Spells: lvl1 6/7, lvl2 5/5

Jamros moves to E21 (stealthy). He surveys the situation and, afraid of injury, runs out with his hands up (to F25) and yells loudly "I surrender! Just don't hurt me! Please, Don't hurt me!"

Jamros, I assume by the lack of bluff that your surrender is sincere? If not, please roll me a bluff check.

Female Human Sorceror (Sage) 3

Glad that none of the halflings would know about her 'unsurrendering' shenanigans from the previous night, Eleri is going to remain in cover right behind her tree and delay action.

HP: 36/36 Spells: lvl1 6/7, lvl2 5/5

The surrender is sincere, but if everyone keeps on fighting, he will probably run off, at which point he will carefully consider his actions. Jamros is acting pretty impulsively right now.

HP 42/43

Currently at 5hp...

Crap. Okay, okay, we surrender.

Sheathe other sabre, re-dismount horse, and put hands over head.

Male Human Rogue [Investigator] 1/Dragonfire Adept 3

Caladrius delays behind the log, just to make sure that the Goldcrest lowlifes who have us overwhelmed don't just shoot anyone who tries to surrender.

HP: 33/45, Smite: 2/2, LoH: 3/6

:(

I swear, when I designed this encounter, I did not expect that you guys would start surrendering!

We'll see what Martin does, and then I will post an update.

Male Human Rogue [Investigator] 1/Dragonfire Adept 3

It's been a while since I got to play a prison break adventure. Caladrius is hopefully going to be good at this sort of thing.

On a vaguely related note, I hope that a gunpowder is like a necklace of fireballs in that it has a chance to go off when it takes fire damage. That would be hilarious.

HP: 33/45, Smite: 2/2, LoH: 3/6

I know a character that isn't going to be happy about surrendering!

I hadn't thought about that, Caladrius, but I love the idea. Given the way early firearms had to be loaded, yes, it totally acts that way. You do need to make it through the powder horn in which the gunpowder is carried, however. Powder horns are naturally resistant to fire. How resistant depends on the quality of the horn. Sound fair to everyone?

Hey, Dartol isn't with us, and I don't think any of you have bonded items...

Male Human Rogue [Investigator] 1/Dragonfire Adept 3

If Dartol were here he would have already started shooting people in the face and we wouldn't have to surrender.

Caladrius wrote:

True...

M Human Paladin 2, Ranger 6

Martin will use three charges from his belt as a standard: 4d8 ⇒ (1, 5, 3, 4) = 13

and then drops his bow, Well, I know when I've been beat

CD,It is three to one and they do have muskets, and we are only lvl 3. While I agree some of this group has more AOE then me, there's not much I can do other than die to the next round of fire considering AC counts for nothing against them. And considering those with AOE are Jamros and Caladrius who just surrendered, well I mean we have only so many options.

The halflings reshuffle themselves slightly. Those who fired last round reload their weapons, while the one in D35 advances to F32 and calls out, "All right, drop your weapons and walk slowly over to me with your hands up. Lie down once you get here."

Those who have loaded weapons keep them trained on Pygrado, Jamros, and Martin.

Caladrius is still sitting in the middle of a fire and takes 1d6 ⇒ 1 fire damage. Gareth ran through a burning bush on the way to L21 and takes 1d6 ⇒ 6 fire damage.

Eleri, it is getting uncomfortably warm in the clearing. No ill effects of staying there for the moment, but you might start needing to roll fort saves vs nonlethal heat damage soon. Just a heads-up.

Map

Out in the open with the halflings:
Now that you can get a closer look at them, you see that the halflings' leather armor is inscribed with the insignia of a black talon (technically it features the pounces as well, but whatever), rather than the arms and badges of Goldcrest. The black-armored halfling calling out commands to you has a silver insignia.

The insignia looks like this.

HP: 33/45, Smite: 2/2, LoH: 3/6

Owww why did i pick the painful bush? 18/24 HP

Gareth whispers to Caladrius:

Caladrius:
"I can distract them with this thunderstone. Do we have a chance if you can set them on fire?"

Delay action but may very well act in this round!

Female Human Sorceror (Sage) 3

Eleri will double-move, first southward through column 16 (trying to avoid moving through any of the fires), then east and northeast to take cover alongside Gareth in K20. She whispers so that Caladrius and Gareth could both hear.

Caladrius and Gareth:

"I hope the others know surrender is not an option, not after what that other halfling did to our captive. Whenever you attack, I'm right behind you. I should be able to incapacitate a few of them fairly quickly, as long as they're aggregated together."

HP: 33/45, Smite: 2/2, LoH: 3/6

Gareth shrugs, "I've had enough of this. Time to give them a little payback!"

Gareth grits his teeth and takes a step back to L20. He takes 2 shots, both at the supposed leader in H28, unless the first shot drops him, in which case he'll fire at H30.

Attack 1:1d20 + 5 ⇒ (12) + 5 = 17
Damage 1:1d8 + 2 ⇒ (8) + 2 = 10
Attack 2:1d20 + 5 ⇒ (17) + 5 = 22
Damage 2:1d8 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 2 = 7

Male Human Rogue [Investigator] 1/Dragonfire Adept 3

Caladrius fumes as Gareth opens fire. No! No, no, no! The plan was to let them close with us so that I don't have to run across that godsdamned open field!

Caladrius then calls out to the halfligs Lay down your weapons and you will be treated honorably as prisoners of war, you little shits. before moving to the other bank of trees next to Martin where it is less on fire than his present location D21. I should be able to get there without running through any fire except for that one which I already took damage from this turn.

Stealth if there is enough cover:1d20 + 6 ⇒ (15) + 6 = 21

Caladrius - I was looking through character sheets a moment ago, and I noticed a couple of problems with yours. I don't see how your AC and touch AC are 19 and 13, respectively, while your dexterity modifier is only +2. By my calculations they should both be one point lower. Also, how do you have 5 feats? You get one at first level, one at third, one for being human, and Dragontouched as a bonus feat. That's four feats. You have five listed on your profile. Please explain and/or correct these discrepancies.

Fixed it. It has to do with the fact that I changed his build several times when I discovered the draconic feats without changing the rest of the character sheet. AC and breath-weapon DC should be correct now.

DM Caleth wrote:

Much appreciated.

wait, CV made a mistake on his charcter sheet, I don't believe it!

HP 42/43

Prior to the attack, Pygrado would have raised his hands over his head and advanced slowly to G29 and knelt.

Jesus you guys, I'm at 5hp and am crippled. You're on your own in this one.

When Caladrius opens fire, he throws himself to the ground in the most non-threatening manner he can.

No! Surrender! There's too many of them!

Just waiting on Martin and Jamros...

HP: 36/36 Spells: lvl1 6/7, lvl2 5/5

Gareth opens fire and Jamros takes off. He double moves to K25, hiding behind the horse. "What's going on?! I thought we were giving up!! he says in a voice so shaky it is impossible to miss his nervousness.

M Human Paladin 2, Ranger 6

Would u allow me to pull a sword during a charge? Fuzzy rule is fuzzy

HP 42/43

I don't think it's fuzzy. "If you have a base attack bonus of +1 or higher, you may draw a weapon as a free action combined with a regular move." A charge contains a regular move.

Actually, a charge normally lets you move up to twice your speed in a straight, unobstructed line. Drawing a weapon while charging allows a half charge (move your speed + attack). With that in mind, go for it.

M Human Paladin 2, Ranger 6

Ya, but charge is a full round action, so some DMs may consider it not allowed. Personally I thin it's fine, but we'll see what CD says.

I just said it was okay if you only move up to your speed. Go ahead.

HP: 36/36 Spells: lvl1 6/7, lvl2 5/5
pfsrd wrote:
" If you move a distance equal to your speed or less, you can also draw a weapon during a charge attack if your base attack bonus is at least +1."

i.e., what he said.

M Human Paladin 2, Ranger 6

I swear this is going to get me killed

"Oh !@#*"! AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

Pulls his sword and Martin charges the halfling in G28 Depending on the soft cover granted from the halflings themselves.

Atk:1d20 + 10 ⇒ (13) + 10 = 23
