DM B's PFS PbP The Labyrinth of Hungry Ghosts LOW (Inactive)

Game Master Beckett

Low Tier Play without Adjustment.

A Pathfinder Society Scenario designed for levels 3–7.
Following a successful mission into the mist-shrouded and shifting Gloomspires, the Pathfinder Society sent another team to explore the tomb of the legendary pirate Sevenfingers. Unfortunately, this team never returned. The spires have momentarily halted, allowing a new team to brave the tomb’s many dangers, hopefully rescuing their allies in the process.
This scenario is a sequel to Pathfinder Society Scenario #6–06: "Hall of the Flesh Eaters".

Having ventured past the Hall of the Flesh Eaters, the group of Pathfinders have discovered only one of the remaining Pathfinders from the team before them they where sent in to look for. Jaohd Ilzinian, the leader and a Taldan paladin of Shelyn, deprived of his memory and weapons, his powers expended joins you as you explore further into the maze.

I have no complaints, DM.

Nectanebo nods to Jaohd, and speaks so that both the ghost and the rest of the party can hear, "Jaohd tells me that he doesn't remember or know you, milady."

You know how men are after the first few moments of,. . . . pleasure." as she waves off the ordeal.

Only he and another returned. Odd, the other gentleman is not with you? But, I've not seen the others since then."

Did we want to go ahead and press on, or try to do more here? OOC, you have gotten all the real information here, so unless someone wants to try to force Jaohd or Lady Kaviiri to do something, (try magic, combat, etc. . .). The truth shall be revealed one way or another shortly. :P

Risa, who's kept herself quiet for a bit as she was studying Jaohd and the ghost, decides to take action. "My dearest paladin, apologies if I prove to be wrong, but I feel there is something amiss with you. I feel, like there is something else within you, and I will drive it out!" Risa snarls the last few words as she whips out a holy symbol and presses it against Jaohd.

I'm a bit unsure about how to break a possession, but Risa can try a few things. Things Risa wants to try, in that order: cast protection from evil on Jaohd, channel positive energy to harm undead, or failing that, using the grave salt we received on Jaohd (probably best if someone else tries that, since Risa sucks at attack rolls).

Dora first tries to shove her sacred icon upon the Paladin's flesh, unsure what would happen, and apparently it is nothing. He allows it, not resisting or even attempting to defend himself. He also stands still as she attempts to cast a protective ward, likely hoping that this might show that he speaks the trust, and the ghost is truly mad. It, likewise, seems to have no apparent ill effect on the Paladin. Even if he may not be in his deity's good graces in full at the moment, it seems he is not completely fallen from her way.

As she pulls back her holy symbol, offering a quick, "Sorry, I had to"[/b] she suddenly stops, surprising any undead in the area with a quick onset of a blast of pure positive, divine energy flooding the room. Jaohd looks, at first uncertain, but as the waves of power wash over him, he seems perfectly fine. Lady Kaviiri, however, withdraws with a cry of pain, look upon you all as betrayers, and vanishes into one of the walls to avoid further harm.

The small sack of enchanted salt to his face is,... surprising, but does not seem to do anything either. As it falls to the ground around him, not truly creating a "circle", but close enough to bind an evil spirit, he is unhindered.

Once again, it takes the party about an hour to navigate the last of the long mazes between areas, but finally you reach your last destination.

Three wall-mounted flaming stone braziers illuminate this unfurnished chamber. Lying on the floor in the middle of the chamber are three mangled humanoid bodies—two male humans and a female elf. Gouges and long scratch marks mar all of the walls of this stone room, as well as several areas on the floor and ceiling. A heavy black curtain cordons off the far southwest corner of the chamber.

Heal DC10:
Even from a distance you can tell that the Pathfinders were killed by a combination of claw and bite attacks, as well as lacerations from a longsword.

The bodies’ mangled condition and the amount of blood on the floor make the square containing the bodies is difficult terrain. A closer look reveals that the bodies are covered with spices and seasonings (doused with wine and fish oil and covered with coriander, shaved nutmeg, molasses, and sugar).

There are two ghostly figures in the room, malignant cloud of shadows boils in the air, their skeletal maws eerily babbling as the creature’s claws manifest from the darkness, and as you begin to filter in, they seem to notice you, but say nothing. In fact, they don't seem to make any noise whatsoever, even calling out a warning to the other, letting out a cry of anger, or the common moan of anguish common to undead.

Perception #1 DC 15:
You hear something move behind the large black curtain, (the small blacked-out area to the bottom left of the new map).

---

Know Religion DC 13:
The two Undead are known as Allips, a type of Incorporeal Undead cursed to rob victims of their sanity. Very curious, as Allips are known for permanently babbling some insane muttering, able to afflict madness on all that hear it, and yet these are utterly silent. . .

Know Religion DC 18:
While Allips are exceptionally dangerous foes, they can not actually kill their victims, something that scholars believe might actually feed their anger and madness to keep them bound to Unlife when other spirits have a chance to move on or complete their unfinished business, Allips are robbed of that. They can, however, steal and feed off of sanity with but a touch, which might render their target unconscious, perhaps permanently.

Know Religion DC 23:
Allips themselves are resistant to priestly energies, but not by much. or are they exceptionally tough foes, neither notably weak or strong against anything save for a priest's channeled might.

---

Perception #2 or Spellcraft DC 20:
There is something strange about the small area ion the north eastern area of this room, where the two undead spirits sit. It takes you a moment to realize it, but when it dawns on you, a sudden sense of dread comes with the revelation. No sound comes from that small 2x3 area where the ghostly shadow-skeletons hover. A trap, likely purposefully blocking their normal sonic effects until they step out of it and it suddenly hits the entire room for full effect.

Because there is a lot going on here, I wanted to give everyone a chance to react real fast prior to rolling initiative. I've updated the map, creating a new slide for just this room.

of the allip must succeed at a Will save or be fascinated for 2d4 ⇒ (1, 1) = 2 rounds. While a target is fascinated, the allip can approach it without breaking the effect, but an attack by the allip does end the effect. Creatures that successfully save cannot be affected by the same allip’s babble for 24 hours. This is a sonic, mind-affecting compulsion
effect.

Perception DC 15:
Oddly, Jaohd DOES NOT SEEM AFFECTED. . . or surprised.

One of the Allips moves to Henrikuaxian, while the other to Marduk, each laying an incorporeal hand on their intended target.

Incorporeal Touch vs Henrikuaxian (AC 19): 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (5) + 4 = 9 <miss>
Incorporeal Touch vs Marduk (FF AC 10): 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (4) + 4 = 8 <miss>

All of your attacks do in fact hit, and while they do not do full damage, it's clear that your Ki Enhanced fists serve you well, striking without striking. Will Update once Marduk unleashes her fury.

If you do consider it a Necromantic effect or curse, then of course I succeed on the second save but not the first. Let me know if that is the case because if so, I will try my folio reroll on the first.

It's hard to say. I'll explain more afterwards, because it would basically give it all away. She had mentioned if she felt the spell fail she would try more, but the spell did not fail. It simply didn't have the effect you where hoping for. I wouldn't be against using more, except that it's a little bit late into it, and I think there have been too many retcons at this point. I don't want to rob you guys of the chance, but honestly, with what's about to happen, I think it would be better to just move along now.

I did, however, misread her post, thinking she meant to cast Bless as her first action and draw the wand to use later. So, with that being said, let me. . .

I'll say that either of them attacking you will break both effects. Similarly with Marduk. Or anyone else attacking anyone that's Fascinated.

Marduk plays no games as she slashes twice at the nearest Allip, her blade hitting only air, but still causing the spirit sufficient damage.

Jaohd, seeing his ally being assaulted by the Zombie woman, takes a step closer to help out, drawing his longsword, Ether's Kiss, and says, IN COMMON, "Not this one. The others. But you must hold back. Not until they are prepared, my love." and then swings. . . At Night Hunter!!! Jaohd's voice seems different. cold, inhumane, accented, though it's not one you are familiar with. The swing fails cut his target, but the swing itself causes severe pain as the blunt side cracks into his spine. At the very least, it seems to release Night Hunter fro the Allip's Spell.

Not believing what he just saw, or perhaps you do, Kitajo unleashes his monkly furry on the nearest threat, the red-tinged Allip, with all three blows connecting. Like with Marduk, he only strikes nothingness, but even so, his fists do noticeable damage. Almost directly afterwards, a bit of the once solid ground beneath the NOT Paladin's feet suddenly vanishes into Henrikuaxian's void, and Jaohd slips into the pit.

Perhaps not truely understanding Jaohd's command, or not caring, the Undying Bride, the Zombie Queen tears into Night Hunter, crushing his shoulder as she grabs him and squeezes, while also bringing him in closer for what at first seems like a bite. Instead, an elongated, albeit rotting tongue slides out, licking the amphibian monk.

Im going to say anyone that failed the save, but was then attacked (hit or miss), afterwards is no longer Fascinated. Otherwise yes. I just forgot to add in the notes in the Initiative. This is a little bit of a crazy fight, as I had been planning to use some of the hidden agenda's to help out breaking the Babble. Id also say destroying the Allip that causes it would work.

Having just barely felt the bite of the madness of the Allip, before the creature's attack snaps him right back out of it, the gnome looks at the spectral creature in horror. "Really, really not ok!" He takes a small step back from it, and flicks his wrist ever so slightly, causing a wand to pop out of his wrist sheathe. With a flourish, he triggers the wand, causing a shot of force to rush out and into the floating specter.

Night Hunter moves away from the pit, less he be caught in it as well, and begins to inspire his allies to fight harder. Risa simply stands there staring and listening to the further spirit's maddening tune as the battle rages on. I moved Night Hunter away from the border of the pit. If that's not what he wants, let me know, but will need a Refl Save to not fall in.

Hen steps back, drawing a wand quickly as he does and sends a magical bolt flying at the crimson specter, obliterating it. Suddenly Nectanebo feels the influence that had captivated his mind slip away, and the world around him begins to fade back into existence. It takes a few seconds for him to realize what all has happened, but the other Allip attacking his ally helps, but is unable to land even a passing touch.
