DM B's PFS GD5 PbP: Thralls of the Shattered God (Inactive)

Game Master Beckett

A Pathfinder Society Scenario designed for levels 5-9 <8-9>
After two years of blood and bravery, the Fifth Mendevian Crusade has struck a terrible blow to the Worldwound’s demons and reclaimed lost territory. The Pathfinder Society, as one of the crusade’s partners in this endeavor, has earned the right to explore and salvage what it can of the lost Sarkorian sites under Mendev’s control, and it has identified one ruin as a priority. In fact, the site seems to actively call to one agent in particular, a scarred survivor of abyssal experiments. Venture-Captain Jorsal of Lauterbury has asked the PCs to accompany this agent into the wasteland, where perhaps she might learn how to control her demonic half—or purge it completely.
Content in “Thralls of the Shattered God” also contributes directly to the ongoing storyline of the Silver Crusade faction.

Before depart, Tûrak makes some purchases at the market. (30 cold iron arrows, holy weapon balm and weapon blanch (silver), total of 38 gp).

"Nice. Now we are officially without the Wardstone's protection and in the company of a sort of half-demon", Tûrak doesn't seem very comfortable with that situation.

During the 10-days travel, though he had kept a safe distance from Valais, Tûrak identifies himself with her in some way, after all, he was submitted to bizarre experiences of a crazy alchemist before. But it seems like she suffered a bit more than him.

"I can go with you", Tûrak told to Rilas. The half-orc wouldn't be a great scout as the ranger, but he can do a good job too.

DM Beckett, tell me if you need some perception or stealth checks, please.

You do not so much stop as come up upon something. In this case, what looks to be a group of people guarding some sort of building being excavated. From what you can tell, it looks like an old cathedral, somehow buried by the Worldwound's shifting nature.

The cliff before you rises up some 20ft, and it looks as though the portion of the cathedral that has already been unearthed rises another 10ft above that. A single woman stands guard atop the cathedral, her longbow drawn and a few arrows in hand, ready to defend the place.

On the ground around the base of the cathedral, you can see six humanoids. Three working with shovels, while the other three are either taking a break of keeping watch. The figure atop the cathedral notices you with ease, knocking an arrow, and alerts the others, but they allow you to get closer before calling out to you to identify yourselves and your business.

Knowing that her appearance will likely cause them to attack, wears a hooded cloak, and stays at the rear of the party, allowing you to talk. It seems that in their haste, they manages to hit a vein of some of the Worldwound's corrupted magma vents, it has begun to leak out, forming small rivers. You can also see the festering holes it comes from, leaking some sort of dark smoke, you probably wish to avoid getting too close to them.

I am Albert Gam, member of the Pathfinder Society, send by the Venture-Captain Jorsal of Lanterbury to help one of our comrade, Valais here, cursed by a traitor in our rank years ago to find a solution. He also asks us to look for any buildings able to be used as a fortified place for the crusaders and also to look for a scout named Shyael who doesn't give news to her superiors for weeks.
We come in peace and with good intentions.

I was going to say just give me a bluff or stealth check to pass it off as drinking from a canteen, but that's fine. From this distance, it's hard to really make out too many details.

Albert's response seems to put the woman atop the building at ease, as she beckons you to approach, "Come closer, so I can see you better. If you are what you say, surely you have some proof."

You do notice as you begin to move closer, that the six other individuals still seem on guard, as if unsure about you. They do not attack, but it's clear they trust you less than the hooded archer. You also suspect that she does not speak for them, but it's unclear just what sort of arrangement they have. All the time, Valais remains behind the party, only speaking when required, and only then saying the least amount she can, as she does her best to remain unnoticed and forgettable.

Sense Motive DC 15:
You are pretty sure that the woman on the roof is scanning you with some sort of divination ability, checking for something.

She asks again for proof of your claim, that you where sent by Venture Captain Jorsal, and your Wayfinders serve well enough in this regard.

She seems to lighten up a little once she is convinced of something, and tells you she too, is interested in finding suitable fortifications this far out, hoping that it will be a first step in taking back what the Abyss has claimed. She further explains that the Sarkorians believe this place to be some sort of holy shrine. "They where not able to unearth it and defend it at the same time, so the asked the Pathfinder Society for aid." She removes her hood, revealing slightly pointed ears, "The Society sent me. My name is Shyael, a devotee and scout of Eristal. Both the followers of the Sarkorian god Laktharis", she motions to the workers below her, "and the Society agreed, that if we could secure this site, they for their faith and we for an outpost and stronghold, it would benefit everyone. Perhaps, . . . as experts, ancient ruins are your speciality. Would you be willing to explore what lies beneath, once we make it to the doors?"

Shortly after that, one of the diggers yells out in excitement, claiming he has found a door. The others go to help digging there, and soon they have it clear enough to open it. However, before doing so, they approach you, speaking a broken form of Taldan (Common). "This place. . . Sacred. Outsiders not permitted. You join our faith?"

You believe that they wish you to be initiated into their faith before they will allow you to enter what they consider a shrine of their people's ancient faith, but, it's possible that you may be able to negotiate, if no one is interested, that is.

The Sarkorians refuse to divulge much information about their faith to those that are to willing to join before hand, but you are not entirely certain just how much they themselves actually know of what they worship. They attempt to explain that "Laktharis was born from the fertility goddess of the sacred heartwood tree, and that his power over nature provided prosperity to Sarkorians in ancient times. The god caller insists that Laktharis can fight against the taint of the Abyss and restore the natural world, but that he rewards only loyal and obedient servants with such a great blessing."

However, Shyael does step I on your behalf, explaining that you are worthy of their trust, and it would be in everyone's best interest if you journeyed below first, "We know not what traps or dangers may lay down there, after all" and also suggests that their still small faith might need every evangelist they have in the coming days.

They agree to allow you to explore first, on your word that you will not disrupt anything sacred, nor steal or conceal anything. Afterwards, they stand aside, allowing you to enter.

You can tell that Valais is very uneasy, both wanting to know the secrets buried here, bound to her just as the Abyssal flesh that taints her body, but also fearful of what she will find. To her credit, though, she hides it well from the others.

Unless otherwise noted, the rooms and hallways are constructed of superior masonry with 10-foot-tall ceilings and the doors are made of iron. Many of its rooms have thick glass windows, but these windows are entirely obscured by thick layers of dirt. There are no light sources
within the temple.

An earthen tunnel leads to an elaborate door, shaped like an open mouth baring jagged fangs. The surface of the door is smooth except for six dials, each surrounded by spiked runes. <see Slide #2>

Anyone else who wants Longstrider is welcome to it, extra 10 ft movement speed. Just let me know how many to cross off.

Will it be possible to go slow and take 20 on perception? With Heightened Awareness and being underground that would be a 45. But I will roll here just in case it's a no. Also, his Init will be a +11 now in the dungeon.

Perception: 1d20 + 25 ⇒ (6) + 25 = 31

No take 20, but your bonus for Underground does apply.

Both Winston ad Savage's pet, however, do act a little strange, smelling possible danger, somewhere near the door, or possibly just beyond it. It's close, though they can't give more details unless you have a way to speak with animals.

As soon as Diri begins casting, it's almost like the door itself morphs, or rather, the closest thing you can compare the sight to is as if a sheet had been laid upon it, with the picture of a door placed upon it, and it is pulled aside, although it's slightly more fluid than solid. It goes directly for Diri, scaring the crap out of everyone as it does. It slams into her hard, disrupting her spell, and then manages to pull her in, like she is stuck to it's outer layer.

There seems to be much less threat that is first seems, as Rilas outright kills it with his arrows before it can further act. It falls lifeless to the ground, releasing Diri from it's adhesive touch. With it dead, the way is clear, (there was no door), leading you to an intersection. Turning the corner either way leads you into darkness.

Also, need to know what spells/wands/abilities you still want to use after the Mimic is dead.

Murals on either side of this long hallway feature ragged looking humans bowing before a powerfully built humanoid male with horns protruding from his head, arms, and down his spine. Patches of red flesh with pustules cover most of the mural, obscuring a line of spiky script.

Sense Motive DC 15:
You notices that Valais is horrified and taken aback. If you ask her what is on her mind, she mumbles a reply “memories that are not my own” and refuses to elaborate further. "Not here. Not now."

The murals depict a large tree on a hill with a single piece of spiny purple fruit. The next one shows the fruit grown and unraveled into a creature, roughly man-sized and shaped but with elephantine feet and spikes growing out of its body. The third panel shows humans groveling before the spiked creature, which slits the throat of a man at the base of the tree using his long, sharp claws. The fourth panel shows the spiked creature touching the tree and creating an abundance of fruit bearing plants. You begin to wonder if this is indeed a temple to Laktharis. Odd patches of flesh obscure the first mural, almost as if they are beginning to grow from the very wall like some sort of mold. They pulsate, and seem to be covered in pustules the reek of rot and necrosis. There are words on the mural

In Hallit, (Linguistics DC 15):
“Servants shall—”
, but the rest is covered with the Abyssal flesh growth.

Heal DC 20:
The patches of flesh are truly pieces of flesh, likely brought into existence through the Worldwound's and Abyssal chaotic energies polluting influence. They ca be removed by attacking them with slashing weapons, though the Abyss's influence surely gives them cruel defenses of some sort, or, with the application of holy and righteous magic of moderate strength.

Perception (trap) DC 28:
Just before the intersection, you spot some sort of spiked trap. It's certainly got some sort of magic attached to it, but it also looks like it's not designed to kill. Perhaps, being so close to the entrance, it is designed to be a sort of test of faith?

Know Planes DC 20:
You know that the purple spiked creature in the pictures is a kalavakus demon, again making you question either just what this cathedral really is dedicated to or perhaps who or what Laktharis really is.
