Ema finds Sighra Harleau in the barracks. Father Eamon has tended to her wounds from the chupacabras' attack, though she still rubs at her arm where the creatures bit her. Her face falls when she sees the arcanist escorting her daughter.

"Oh, no. What did she do this time?"

Medrinnah rolls her eyes. "Gods, mom, why do you always assume that I've gotten into trouble?"

"Because you usually have."

"Not this time! Ema says she's going to teach me to be a wizard!"

Sighra blinks. "Is that right? Ema, do you really think that is a good idea?"

Ema considered what to say to the girls mom and then finally said, "I think that she has the interest to learn and that is and important first step to using magic like I do. We could certainly use someone else trained in arcane magic with the potential for learning the full breadth of magic wizards and the like can use." She gave Sighra a meaningful look, "It will also instill discipline in her that she seems to need, if in a different manner than your training gave you, as learning arcane magic is neither easy nor fast. It takes time and patients to learn and I promise that if I feel she isn't up to the task the apprenticeship ends."

Ema looked to Medrinnah as she said, "Magic is too dangerous in the hands of someone who won't apply themselves and learn what they need to know and I won't deliver that power to someone who is unworthy of bearing the responsibility that comes with the power they gain." Her expression was serious as she spoke and brooked no argument, "You must apply yourself and follow instructions or you'll never make it, I expect you to listen and do what your told when it comes to your studies. I'm not a harsh Mistress but I expect much from you and don't forget it."

Stepping back Emalliandra looked at Mother and Daughter, "Are we all in agreement?"

Medrinnah nods solemnly at Ema's admonishment and turns to her mother. "Please, mom! This is literally all I've ever wanted to do with my life! I want to be a wizard!"

Sighra frowns. "This is the first time I've actually seen you excited about something. I'm still leery about it, but... I suppose we can try it. But if Ema tells me you're not following instructions or are acting out, that's the end of it. Understand?"

"Yes! Thank you, mom!" Medrinnah laughs and hugs her mother, then turns to Ema eagerly. "Okay, so how do I magic?"

Nodding in agreement Ema said, "First we need to teach you the right language. Most apprentices would learn draconic as it is the standard for most text books." Quirking one eyebrow she said, "For you, though, we need to start with something different. Unlike most I don't use draconic for my magic, I use Ancient Azlanti. It's the only language I knew when the Varisian's found me three years ago and it's what my first spellbook was written in when I found it on the shelves of the Society. It's a dead language aside from myself but it should be easier to pick up than draconic since it was made by humans, albeit a slightly different stock of humans."

Ema thought it through and tried to figure out where to get a good source for Merinnah to study, "We found some books that were in Azlanti and I copied them before we sent them on to the mainland. You can use those to practice reading the script..." She trailed of in thought and gestured for Merinnah to follow her, "We'll go talk to Perrell, she might have some blank books we could use for you to practice the letters in, and Carver might know the language enough to help you practice when I'm gone." Before they slipped out Ema looked back at Sighra, "I'll keep you updated on her progress Sighra and I'll make sure she's back before it's too late. We have a lot to organize for her studies today." With that she headed out the door expecting Medrinnah to follow and headed for Perrell's place.

Having retrieved a blank book from Perrell that Medrinnah could use for her studies Ema brought the young woman to a place where they could have some quiet and privacy to begin her education. Spreading a blanket she'd grabbed from their house Ema sat on it and gestured for the young woman to join her. "Alright Medrinnah," she said, "To start your training we need to work on your languages first. We're starting with Azlanti since it's what I cast my spells in and while some of the other books I've come across use draconic I scribe my new spells in the language I use." She opened the book and took out a quill and ink as she began to write in it. "This is the Azlanti alphabet, there are two versions of the language, this is the first, an alphabet based one." When she finished there were multiple rows of neat letters, with space below them, in an ancient script. She then began to name off the letters as she went in the common tongue and wrote them below their Azlanti counterparts. As she wrote there were gaps in the letters, places she didn't fill in.

When she finished Ema said, "You see these holes?" She gave Medrinnah a chance to respond before continuing, "These letters have no match in the common tongue, they are older ones that have fallen out of use over the millenia. This one," she pointed to a strange looking letter, "Is roughly pronounced as 'zh' and would be used in place of the 'sh' sound." She looked at Medrinnah expectantly and waited for her to repeat the sound. "Not quite but close, you need more of a buzz at teh beginning of the sound." She repeated the sound again and had Medrinnah do so as well until satisfied the younger woman had gotten it right. "Very good. Now, this one is used in place of 'ss', it sounds the same in common but means something different in Azlanti."

The rest of the day was largely spent with Ema teaching Medrinnah the Azlanti language and then some simple words. As the day wound on Ema said, "Alright I think that's enough of languages for the day. I think it's time to discuss something else, what style of magic you want to learn. There are two ways I can teach you, as a classically trained wizard or as an arcanist like myself. There are important differences to the two styles that you need to understand. A wizard follows the rules very strictly, they are trained to do things a very specific way and because of that they have the ability to easily specialize in one school of magic if they so wish at the cost of others. This is the traditional way such things are taught. They can specialize in one of the schools of magic or none if they wish. This gives them great potential in their field at the cost of flexibility and strength in other schools."

Pausing for Medrinnah to think about wizards through for a moment Ema then continued, "Then there is my style of magic. I am not, strictly speaking, a wizard. I am what is often termed an arcanist. I mix the abilities of a wizard with those of a sorcerer. I don't have as many different spells I can memorize in a day but once I have them ready I can cast them like a sorcerer would, as many times as I want until I run out of magic to cast them. This leave me less flexible on any given day but when I'm prepared adequately I can bring a lot of pain to whatever i'm fighting or dealing with. I can also gain a number of tricks in a day that draw on a reservoir of magic I contain within me. This lets me do things that most wizards call cheating since I can expend that stored energy to do other things with it. In some cases I can do them better than a wizard could but it limits what I can accomplish." She let Medrinnah soak that in before Ema continued, "It also means I'm not as good at certain things as a wizard is, I can't specialize in a school easily like one can though I can exploit my reservoir of power to duplicate such things to a limited extent."

Ema gave Medrinnah a serious look, "This is an important thing for you to think about, you don't have to decide this now, but you should be thinking about it." Deiding it was time for something a bit different before they headed back Ema said, "Now, let me show you a few spells so you can see what you have to look forward to when you finish your apprentice ship." Ema left no doubt in her tone that Medrinnah would be able to finish her training, she knew confidence was as much a part of this as anything else. Looking for a target Ema found a rock a good ways away and said, "This is one of my preferred spells for offensive casting, it won't do much damage but it will hurt athings a little, even things most spells can't effect." With a few words and a gesture Ema conjured a globule of acid and then sent it flying into a nearby rock. The glob hit with a hissing sizzle as the acid ate it away fora few second before dissipating back into the aether. "that is a simple cantrip I can cast as often as I want if I have it prepared. Now," Ema looked at Medrinnah, "I'm going to use you for the next target of a spell. I promise you it won't hurt you but it may be disconcerting but I want you to accept it. Are you ready?"

When Medrinnah said she was ready Ema began to chant and gesture then a shadowy weight settled down on Medrinnah and started to attach to her shadow attempting to lock it in place. With the spell in place Ema said, "Go ahead and try to reach me Medrinnah, if you can." She let the young woman try to approach her futilely as the spell kept her close to her starting point. After a few attempts she waved her hand and dismissed the spell, "Did you feel when the magic began to take hold of your shadow Medrinnah?" She let her apprentice reply before continuing, "That is the point at which the spell would either work or not if someone resisted it. You can almost always attempt to resist a spell but you don't always want to, many can beneficial to you like healing spells or protection spells and you should generally accept those. What I just used is called a 'shadow trap' and is used to control the movement of your enemies on the battlefield. It is a simple illusion spell that can be very handy."

With the demonstration down for now Ema said, "Now, do you have any questions for me or are you ready to head back now." She looked to where the sun was going down, "It's getting late so we should talk as we head back." Ema gathered up the materials as she let Medrinnah ask her questions.

Medrinnah doesn't seem too thrilled with the language lessons, but she laughs in awe when Ema finally shows her some spells in action. As they walk back together, the teenager asks the older woman a barrage of questions all about spellcraft, how magic works, why only certain people can use magic, the different arcane schools, and more. It's clear she is very interested in learning more.

As the pair were walking, Kip caught up to them. "How'd your first day go, Medrinnah? Ready to become Medrinnah the Mage, Master Manipulator of Magic?"

After hearing about her first day of studies, Kip smiled. "Well, I don't know that much about learning spellwork from books and ancient languages, but I do know that wizards and I have something in common." The small grippli retrieved an even smaller box made of woven reeds from the back of his pack and held it out to Medrinnah.

"Wizards and shamans both have little animal friends!" Inside the box was a small green and black turtle, happily munching on a strawberry. "Actually, now that I think about it, why don't you have an animal, Ema?"

"Oh! He's cute!" Medrinnah picks up the turtle and holds him close to her chest. "Does he have a name? I'm going to name him Terrance!"

"Terrance is a fantastic name, don't you think Gerald?" The pufferfish poked his eyes up above the lip of Kip's hat, only to flop over and waggle a fin dismissively before disappearing again. "I think Gerald likes Terrance."

Smiling at Kip Ema said, "Why because I'm not really a wizard, I'm an arcanist. I suppose I could find a way to make such a bond if I wanted to I just don't see the need to." She seemed a little sad then as she continued, "Besides, I think there is a reason I was found alone like that, why I don't bond with specific animals like you have." She cheered up then as she continued, "Besides, since I summon creatures, specific creatures unlike most, I have many animal and not so animal friends when I need them."

Ema looked slightly concerned at Medrinnah's words and said, "No, you would get a demon who would promptly refuse to do the chores and likely try to eat your face and kill you and anyone around while it was here." Looking to her apprentice Ema said, "Once you get to planar studies you'll learn more about the outsiders and what they can, can't, and won't do." She smiled then as she continued, "Besides, there are less risky ways to magically get chores done, once you're ready to learn those spells of course. Fortunately they are fairly basic spells."

"Oh, okay," Medrinnah says. She seems slightly disappointed that she won't have a personal chore-demon.

I'm ready if Kip is

Okay, I'll assume you head out with Kip casting the spell.

After seeing to Medrinnah's training, you get ready to try to track down Soran. Boarding the ship's boat the Peregrine left behind, Kip calls to the spirits of the water, creating a ripple in the waves that shows the trail Soran took when he left Talmandor's bounty. It's still relatively fresh, so it is easy to follow.

The Survival DC is only 11, so I'll assume you take 10 on your checks to follow it.

The trail leads south towards the cove that you explored yesterday, but before it makes it there, it starts to drift out into the open ocean. It turns on a westerly course and starts heading out to sea.

Perception:
Ema: 1d20 - 2 ⇒ (11) - 2 = 9
Kip: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (11) + 6 = 17
Simon: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (16) + 12 = 28
Victrix: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (8) + 7 = 15

After a few hours, Simon spots a large shape moving beneath the waves, heading towards your boat. He shouts a warning just before a creature breaches the surface about 100 feet away. Not quite sea serpent or dragon, the 14-foot-long creature is covered with shiny blue-green scales. Its arms serve as both wings and flippers.

Initiative:
Ema: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (11) + 1 = 12
Kip: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (5) + 3 = 8
Simon: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (12) + 2 = 14
Victrix: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (10) + 1 = 11
Sea Drake: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (11) + 6 = 17

Before you can react, the creature opens its mouth and spits forth a crackling ball of electricity! It strikes Victrix before arcing to the rest of you!

Electricity Damage: 6d6 ⇒ (1, 6, 5, 3, 1, 2) = 18
Recharge: 1d6 ⇒ 1

Everybody takes 18 damage (Reflex DC 17 for half). Everybody may act now! The creature is 100 feet away. Somebody can row the boat thirty feet a round as a full-round action, or 15 feet as a move action.

Knowledge (arcana) DC 16:
This is a sea drake. It is capable of breathing lightning on prey and moving rapidly when on the hunt. It is immune to electricity, paralysis, and sleep effects.

Simon quaffs his extract of Fire Breath and then jumps into the water, allowing the cloak to transform him into a manta ray. He swims away from the group to provide separation.

Ema knew a Sea Drake when she saw one but also knew they didn't want to tangle with it in this boat. She spoke up loudly so the creature could hear her and asked, "I would like to bargain Great One!" She knew dragons liked their ego's stroked and figured drakes would be the same way, she only hoped that it would work. "We have no quarrel with one like you and know we are no match for your prowess at sea, would you deign to speak with lesser creatures like us that we might come to an agreement?"

False Life: 1d10 + 5 ⇒ (10) + 5 = 15

The drake snarls but doesn't respond to Ema. Lightning begins to gather inside its maw once more...

The drake only speaks Draconic, so it doesn't understand Ema's pleas. Not that it would care all that much even if it did!

Kip and Victrix are up.

Ouch! 34 total damage to Simon. After Kip's healing, he's at -3 HP. Still conscious due to orc ferocity. The drake only took a 5 foot step forward so you all should still be close to melee range. Everybody is up again!

Woozily, Simon contemplates whether a fire-breathing manta ray is simply too exotic of a treat to be ignored.

Trying to clear his head enough to be helpful, he withdraws from combat, moving out of danger and surfacing behind the boat.

Now at -4 HP and dying. I can only move 30 ft, if that doesn't get me close to the boat, I'll move as far as I can

The shark moved in again, getting Victrix on the opposite side of the drake and then bit at the thing again.

Kip swims to Simon and heals his wounds. His spiritual weapon scores a telling strike, stabbing deep into the drake's neck.

Victrix's glaive scrapes against its scales harmlessly, but Ema's shark bites hard into its flank while the arcanist pummels it with magic missiles.

The drake whirls on the shark, snapping at it. It misses the big fish, but its tail whips around and slaps it hard.

10 healing to Simon. 13 damage to the summoned shark. Everybody is up again!

Simon attempts to smile at Kip, before remembering that he still looks like a manta ray.

He briefly wonders what that must have looked like, then swims back into battle, finding a position where the cone of his breath weapon will only hit the drake.

The drake avoids the worst of Simon's fire breath, and its thick scales protect it from the shark's bite. But Ema's magic missiles burn into its body, and as it flails about in pain, Victrix finally lands a powerful hit. Her glaive slices open its throat, spraying her and the water with hot blood. The monster collapses with a large splash, floating lifelessly as its blood drains from its body.

Victrix lets the anger fade, then hastily swims back to the boat and heaves herself in.

"Always with the bloody sea drakes & undead beasties. I wonder if there's an underwater village of hypnotic snake-people or something where we're going? It'd be a welcome change." She quips, trying to ignore her ruined trousers.

With the death of the creature Ema knew that leaving the shark in the water with her friends, summoned or now, was a bad idea and so she called out, "Thanks Sally!" A rune appeared as the shark swam towards Simon with a hungry look between the two and a portal tore open letting the shark through before sealing again. Ema called out to her friend,s "Would you try to collect some of the drake's blood and scales for me, maybe a couple of claws too? They might be useful when I start enchanting things later!"

Simon looks back at where the shark was swimming. He had thought the shark wanted to play, but Ema's quick dismissal of the animal shows him a new light.

Grateful for the intervention, he causes his arms to emerge with his dagger and an empty vial. He sets about gathering a few body parts at Ema's direction, then swims back to the boat.

"Well, that was less than pleasant. Is your tracking spell still active, Kip?"

He quaffs his curing extracts.

"Eh, perhaps. Could you fix my trousers while I go get your scales & stuff?" Victrix peels the ragged, ruined piece of clothing off her fishy tail.

Nodding in amusement at Victoria's de-panting Ema giggled and said, "Teehee! Sure!" She took the offered trousers and began to chant and gesture. The spell took some time but she finished and held the pants up for Victrix, "There we go, all better."

Victrix smiles, then lets her tail transform back into legs and slides her trousers on.

Then she hops out of the boat to harvest some drake blood, scales & claws.

"Still up! We can continue when you're ready," Kip says.

You continue rowing west for a few more hours. Just as the spell is about to expire, you spot a small fishing boat floating in the water. Seated inside is Soran Vigaldo! He looks sun burned and somewhat dehydrated, but he waves as you draw near!

"Hey! Over here! Thank the gods, you found me! I accidentally fell asleep and my boat drifted out to sea. I've been trying to find my way back!"

Kip suggests bringing the whole drake, or as much as is safe to carry along.

"If that's all that happened, then you've been extra lucky! We just fought off this thing!" Kip exclaimed as he struggled to lift the wing of the drake. "Actually, just in case, I'm going to check you in case anything worse has happened that you've forgotten."

Kip performed a quick diagnostic spell and scanned Soran with detect magic, then conjured up some clean, fresh water for the dehyrdated man to drink. "Can't be too careful these days. Are you ready to go home?"

And just for good measure, let's get some healing out there for everyone.

Channel Energy: 3d6 ⇒ (1, 2, 4) = 7

Kip does not detect any magic auras on Soran or his boat.

"You killed a dragon? That's amazing!" He sighs in relief as Kip heals his injuries, and eagerly accepts the fresh water.

"Yes, please. Let's go home. Um, if anybody asks, can you tell them the dragon dragged me out to sea? The truth is actually kind of embarrassing..."

Male Grippli Shaman 7 |59/59 | Fort +7, Ref +6, Will +10 | AC 19, T 14, FF 16, CMD 14 | Perc. +6 | Init +3

"What do you mean? I'm sure everyone will be quite impressed when we tell them we sailed out to sea to find you and had to fight this guy in order to rescue you or you would have certainly perished!"

"Yeah, that's fine, just... Don't tell them I fell asleep?"
