"OK, this is it!", Wulfram told the civilians in a hushed tone as they approached the bridge. "Aramant, Eustoma, Rogar and I are going to go ahead to take out the guard on the bridge. Kining, once the guard and her pet are dead, I'll help you get the construction crane into place. Everyone else, when I give the signal, run as fast as you can for the other side of the river. Once you're across, we'll destroy the bridge so the Hobs can't follow. We can all make it through this day!"

Wulfram moved forward, spear at the ready, using the cover of the trees as best he could.

Rofar sees Wulfram blundering along, sighs, and lets the power flow through him. He can feel the earth straining beneath his iron grip, but he refuses to let it go as he sustains the pull, prepared to unleash it in a moment's notice. As soon as the hobgoblin notices one of them, Rogar pulls a boulder half his size out of the ground and with a deft strike, he sends it flying at the hobgoblin....

Readying an action to attack, essentially, as soon as initiative is rolled. In game terms, that's as soon as the hobgoblin sees one of us and prepares for attack.

Before you start sneaking towards the bridge, Aubrin casts a few spells--bull's strength on Wulfram and bless on the entire party.

For the next 3 minutes, Wulfram has a +4 enhancement bonus to Strength, and everybody has a +1 morale bonus on attack rolls and saving throws against fear effects.

Perception Hob: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (7) + 4 = 11
Perception Wolf: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (13) + 10 = 23

Unfortunately, you don't get very close to the bridge before the wolf's keen senses pick you out. It begins to growl, alerting the hobgoblin to your presence as well!

Initiative:
Aramant: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (1) + 4 = 5
Wulfram: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5

Aubrin grants Rogar another of Cayden's blessings as the dwarf draws power from the ground.

The hobgoblin releases the wolf, which comes bounding towards your group. As it draws near, Rogar slams it with a massive boulder, severely injuring it. Still, the bloodied beast continues its charge, leaping at Wulfram. That proves to be a fatal mistake, as the smith's attack of opportunity impales the wounded wolf and lays it low.

Attack of Opportunity: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (19) + 7 = 26
Damage (Bull's Strength): 1d8 + 9 ⇒ (5) + 9 = 14

Cursing, the hobgoblin draws a crossbow and fires at Wulfram, the bolt burying itself in his leg. She casts a significant glance towards the shack and shouts something in the Goblin tongue.

Attack: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (13) + 6 = 19
Damage: 1d8 ⇒ 5

5 damage to Wulfram. The shack is 45 feet to your north. The hobgoblin is 80 feet to your east. Will try to get a map up later, but I might not be able to post much until Monday.

Wulfram cursed under his breath as Rogar ran towards the suspected enemy reinforcements — right into the area where he was planning to animate the plant life to entangle the arriving Ironfang soldiers. Trying to ignore the pain in his leg, he withdrew his spear from the dead wolf, and moved up. He took cover behind a tree and studied the area around the shack, looking for hobgoblins and trying to figure out where to target his spell.

Aramant accompanies Sia, going towards the bridge. He waits until the others take position, going at the end, and limits himself to move towards the hobgoblin and adopt a total defense position, cursing and trying to pull the goblinoid to engage him.

Eustoma's fires off an errant bullet before granting Sia added strength. The wolf moves towards the hobgoblin, growling menacingly.

Aramant moves out into the open and adopts a defensive stance, cursing at the hobgoblin to try to get her attention.

Wulfram runs up and takes cover at the base of the bridge. He looks around for potential reinforcements, but there don't seem to be any nearby hobgoblins out in the open.

Aubrin hobbles over to stand beside Wulfram, squinting to try to make out what's going on.

Rogar hustles across the road, stopping a few feet from the entrance to the construction shed.

Letting out another frustrated shout, the armored hobgoblin looks from Aramant to Sia, who is closer to her. She quickly reloads her crossbow and shoots the wolf, then drops the ranged weapon before drawing her scimitar.

Attack (Point Blank Shot): 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (18) + 7 = 25

6 damage to Sia. I think you forgot to update her HP earlier, Eustoma--not sure how much damage she has on her now but I know she's still conscious.

Rogar attempts to block the door of the shed with a mass of earth.

Okay, so by RAW I can only move 5 pounds of earth/level using Basic geokinesis. If we're holding to that, it would be 5 pounds of stone rising from the ground just in front of the door to jam it closed. If not, Rogar is going to try and pile a mass of rock in front of the shed.

Bite: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (2) + 3 = 5

The hobgoblin raises her shield to deflect Eustoma's sling bullet as the halfling moves closer. Sia rushes in to bite, but the warrior sidesteps the attack.

She's unable to dodge Aramant's charge attack, though. The tiefling's sword tears through her armor, drawing blood.

Wulfram gives himself some guidance before moving out onto the bridge, still keeping his eyes peeled for more hobgoblins.

Aubrin moves onto the bridge as well, groaning a little and pressing her hands to her chest wound.

Rogar gathers some earth to try to block the doors to the shed, but he doesn't get very far before the doors are pushed open. Two hobgoblin soldiers stand on the other side, quickly looking around to assess the situation.

The armored trooper shouts what sound like orders as she tries to retaliate against Aramant. The bard parries her strike.

Attack: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (5) + 6 = 11

5 pounds of rock isn't much of a barricade, but it did slow the hobgoblins down enough that they had to use a standard action to push the doors open.

Sia snaps at her heels, but still is unable to land a good bite.

Meanwhile, Rogar gathers a huge mound of dirt and slams it into the hobgoblin in front of him. The warrior is thrown back into the shack from the force of the impact!

Rogar gathers another mass of earth to blast the hobgoblin away from it. While the blast wounds the warrior, it's not enough to push him away.

The smith helps pull the ropes that control the crane as it latches onto the bridge's support structure. Wood creaks as Wulfram strains withh all of his might, and after a few moments, the entire scaffolding tears apart. The bridge begins leaning to the north, groaning ominously.

Wulfram and Kining race across the listing structure, and just as they make it to the other side, the entire bridge collapses into the rushing waters!

Agreed. Let's get moving, everybody, come on! - says the bard, rallying people to get distance from the city. The good tiefling looks behind at the orange glow behind, and breathes deeply holding a tear. They would come back and the legion would pay for it, but now - live to fight another day.

You lead your followers a few miles into the woods before the townsfolk run out of energy. Visibility so late at night is almost zero for the mostly human group, so you wouldn't have been able to make much more progress anyways. The villagers' faces show a mix of sorrow, fear, and anger--only Rhyna seems to be able to remain optimistic in the face of this night's tragedy.

Fortunately, the night passes uneventfully, giving you a chance to rest and recuperate. In the morning, it's time to decide how to help your little band survive in the Fangwood.

Aubrin casts healing spells until everybody is at full health. Everybody has gained enough XP to reach level 2! See the Discussion thread for what to do next.

Eustoma brings up the rear of the group making sure no one falls behind. "We need to find a place further away that is defensible."

"Nah tonight, lass. In tha morning, then we can set off again. Fer now, we need ta rest." The dwarf shakes his head, then helps set up the camp by digging out impromptu shelters and raising slabs of stone to serve as covers.

So, with my level up, I can move 10 pounds of earth and loose stone/round, which is way faster than anyone could dig. As such, Rogar can help by digging fire pits, digging shelters, and the like.

The makeshift camp begins to stir as morning comes. Even though the sun is out, the massive trees blot out the sun, leaving the forest floor in a perpetual twilight. Today seems unseasonably chilly, and you huddle around a fire for warmth as you consult with Aubrin and the others.

"It's only a matter of time before the hobgoblins will be able to cross the river," the cleric says. "We need to move deeper into the woods."

"Our provisions will last for a few days," Jet says. "But we will need to start foraging for more food soon or people will start to go hungry."

"Don't worry! I'm sure we will find a nice, comfy place for all of us to hunker down soon!" Rhyna says cheerfully. "There's all sorts of wonders in the forest if you know where to look!"

"All sorts of danger, too," Kining grumbles. "The terrain is confusing and treacherous, and the beasts are huge and vicious. It's bad enough without worrying about the hobs dogging our heels."

As they made camp in the evening, Wulfram emptied out his backpack and sorted though the various items and supplies he had grabbed and stuffed in there during the day. He held the pack upside down and shook out a quantity of ash remaining in the bottom. "This is why I don't like it when you go in the fire, Pele," he grumbled. She ignored him.

When dawn broke the next day, he rose and washed in the chilly morning air. He sat down in front of the fire to meditate, with Pele curled up in his lap. Communing with the flame spirits, he focused on powers to help him augment the group's food supplies.

Memorizing 3 Goodberry spells

After he had finished, he joined the others and discussed plans for the day.

"We should find a proper location for our camp," Wulfram suggested. "A defensible position, close to a source of water. There should be some ripe berries around; I can use my magic to enhance them to boost our food supplies. Once the camp is set-up, we need to get started on tracking down stray sheep and goats. It's only a matter of time before wolves and other predators kill them."

Later he helped Aubrin determine the properties of the unidentified potions, wands and other items.

Rogar makes his way to the 'leadership' group with Wulfram, "Agreed. Ah can 'elp make some weapons fer the lot o' em, or I can go out scouting. Per'aps there are some caves around tha' might work fer shelter. Water is less of a concern, can ye not simply magic some up if'n we need any? Our firs' order of business, however, needs ta be to divide up all tha' we scavenged from Phaendar as we fled." He glances around, making sure Kining isn't nearby, then pulls out a buckler from his backpack. On it, there's the symbol of a stone arch over a burning flame, "Ah found this in tha smithy. It's tha holy symbol o' Droskar, an evil dwarven god. Ah'm pretty sure 'at Kining made it, and she's a worshipper o' him, bu' I'm no sure wha' ta do about it."

"Rogar do you know what kind of evil? Some aren't so bad. They follow the laws, but don't care much about people or what the laws do to them. Would this god have something to do with hobgoblins? She's been in the village for a while, yes? Maybe we shouldn't do anything, but keep an eye out. We need a smith, and she needs our help to survive."

Eustoma goes over to where the gear is piled up and pulls out the wands, and potions that have not been identified."Let's see if I can help identify some of these before I go looking for food, and a place to set up a more permanent camp."

"Droskar? Ah, 'es the worst o' tha worst. He represents endless toil, slave labor, and doing whatever is needed ta accomplish yer goals. 'Is followers are liars, cheats, slavers, an' worse. He can never create something original of 'is own, so he copies the works of others an' passes it off as 'is own." The dwarf shakes his head, "Bu' as you said, we need smiths, an' even if Kining is a follower o' the Dark Smith, 'er skills cen still be useful."

In reality Droskar is relatively harmless, an NE god that promotes cheating and exploiting others. However, he represents endless toil- one of the greatest fears for a dwarf- so Rogar is slightly overreacting, as Droskar is THE evil dwarven god in his eyes.

"Aye, Kining can be difficult to get along with, but we need her skills.. Wolfram replied in a low voice. "Best to stay on her good side; I'd see she gets that back before she misses it."

After helping with the identification of the magic items, Wulfram set out with Eustoma to find a better campsite.
