Nico smiles, and he stares off into the distance as he pulls up some old memories. "What I remember of the forest was that it was alive. Everything around you was vibrant, and you could feel the presence of the animals, the trees, the brush...all of it. Even where it was dark, so dark that you would mistake it for a void, you could feel the energy of whatever lived inside it, foreboding and frightening.

"There were gnomes, of course, and the occasional fey. The magic about them is real enough, but to a five- and six-year-old it was more than that. Imagination and beauty. Especially the fey, though of course you had to be careful because some of them were quite dangerous." Nico's eyes come back into focus. "It left an impression. Lots of things do at that age." His expression turns dour for just a moment as he adds, "Of course, it's not lost on me that some of the magic I've learned is more practical than fanciful, but one has to eat."

He looks up as a another figure enters the room where he's been sitting. An elf with silver eyes and golden hair, she looks both beautiful and oddly fragile. After her greeting, he rises and takes her hand, delicately, and says "Greetings to you, Durielle. I am Nico Tegustus, and I'm here to...um. Well. I guess...I guess I am here to...interview."

Marisol puts her teacup down and leans forward slightly. "Sounds wonderful. I rarely got out of the city much... but I do love the enchantment of the forest."

"Good morning, Durielle. Sleep well?" the swordsman asks.

With a half grin on his face, Vladimir says, "That would be a good thing then, m'lady, as we are about to spend a significant amount of time in the forest."

Turning back to Nico, he adds, "Sometime back, around the time that we had found the Temple of the Elk, we had encounter a couple of the fair folk out in these woods, a grig and a faerie dragon. Maybe we will see them again on our way to the temple."

"And by the way, Nico, this is not an interview. You have a charter and on top of that you were recruited by one of our own. Hrafen may be many things, but a poor judge of character is not one of them." the swordsman says.

Durielle:
Unable to recall whether he had ever made a woman cry before, Balter makes a pained expression when Durielle appears to do just that. When she manages to maintain her composure however, the moment passes, and he is back to looking as perplexed as ever. It had never occurred to him to ask about how or when her power came about, so to hear her speak of it freely piqued his curiosity.

”Saving them? From what? You?” Balter asks incredulously. He shakes his head and lets out a small chuckle. ”I don’t get it. But if that’s true, then it doesn’t exactly sound like you got your just reward.“

So he says, despite knowing damn well that life isn’t fair. He pauses for a few seconds, giving his next words some serious thought.

”I don’t know if you can help me, Durielle. After all this time, even I’m not entirely certain of what I can possibly hope to accomplish out here. All I know is that taking up the charter, exploring these lands, killing bandits… they are all just means to an end.” Balter frowns suddenly. ”An end that you apparently have an inkling of. If what you saw was ‘the possibility closest to my heart’s desire’, then you already know why I’m here. I have not spoken of that to anyone. That’s what sc- bothers me the most. Not that you can help that.”

He sighs and runs a hand through his hair. ”But for what it’s worth, I do trust you,” he says finally. To his surprise, he actually means it.

Balter emerges from the guest rooms as well, just a few minutes after Durielle.

He appears to be in the middle of adjusting his sword belt when he notices an unfamiliar presence. His immediate reaction - which Nico will no doubt soon grow accustomed to - is to frown and size the man up from a guarded distance. Before long however, he walks on over to properly greet the newcomer. Well, sort of.

As he draws closer, it becomes readily apparent that Balter is not entirely human. While his sharp amber eyes, long white hair, and pointed ears define an obvious elven heritage, his rugged facial features speak more for his human side. The man is tall and very well-built (small wonder, considering the three different swords on his belt), and wears a dark green tunic with black trousers. Almost an afterthought, a dull gray cloak hangs over his shoulder.

”Well, well. Who might this be? I wasn’t aware that Oleg was looking for more hands around the fort,” he says of Nico, misreading the situation. Whether or not he is doing so deliberately is anyone’s guess.

M Human (Taldan) Wizard (Evoker) 5; Init +7; HP 37/37; AC 14/11/14; F/R/W 3/4/5

Still standing, Nico sees a tall gentleman enter the room, one with striking, long white hair. They stand looking at one another for a brief moment, then Nico extends his hand in greeting as the man approaches.

"Uh...he might be. You'd have to ask him, I guess. My name is Nico. Nico Tegustus."

Vladimir smirks at Balter's comment. "Balter, Nico is here to join us. It seems Hrafen took his leave of us last night, but at least had the decency to recruit a suitable replacement for himself before he left." Vladimir plainly says.

"Oh?" Balter quirks his brow, a little surprised to hear of Hrafen's abrupt departure. Looking back from Vlad to Nico, he extends his arm and gives the newcomer's hand a firm shake before releasing it. "Balter Farshadow. You know, for a halfling, Hrafen has some pretty big shoes to fill." With a smirk that is only slightly disconcerting, he adds, "He could melt people down to their bones."

Nico furrows his brow. "That sounds impressively horrible," he says. Then his face breaks into a grin. "I, uh, tend to stop once their dead. You kill more people that way."

Realizing he may have unintentionally insulted their friend, Nico's expression turns apologetic and he hastily adds, "Not that the other approach is wrong, of course! Sometimes you just need to get a point across."

As the conversations go on, Vladimir eventually excuses himself to ensure Shadow will be ready to travel come morning. "I will be around should any of you need me for anything."

Walking over to Nico, Vladimir places his left on the wizard's shoulder and offers his right. "Welcome to the team Nico."

As the swordsman is walking away, he pauses and turns back to Nico. "Do you have a horse? If not, it may be in your best interest to see if you can purchase one from Oleg. I know he has a few, and if you need a loan to make such a purchase I would be more than happy to help you out."

Nothing else from me at the moment unless someone else seeks Vlad out. Otherwise it's relax for the remainder of the day, get a good meal and get ready to go out on a bit of exploration. I will pick up two weeks worth of trail rations the horse feed from Oleg before we go.

Marisol makes a small order from the big city and packs up some additional traveling food. "We like to travel quickly, so even if you're not a good rider - like me, I'm not really skilled on horseback - best to have a horse to take care of the miles we'll be covering," she says to Nico.

"Balter, is Durielle feeling well enough to join us?"

Durielle makes a slightly indignant noise as the dhampir speaks to Balter about Durielle's health as if she was not standing right there.

"Have you decided that somehow Balter would know better than I, myself, Marisol?" Durielle asks with a bit of heat. "I know you and Vladimir like to think I'm too delicate for all this traveling, but I think I've proven I handle myself well enough."

Turning to Nico, the oracle says, "My apologies, Master Tegustus. I'm afraid you will come to see my friends are bit overprotective of me at times."

Balter:
Durielle listens to Balter quietly but watches him closely and makes eye contact, so he knows that she is being attentive. When he is finished, she nods almost to herself.

"My village...my departure was what removed a plague that was laid on them by an entity far beyond my ken. A fact that was revealed to me before it happened, but I refused to believe. Sadly, the future I chose to ignore came to pass, and so I bear the wasting disease now called the Omenstar after my very name as a punishment for not heeding the warning. What the Omenstar is, and why it was my presence that caused it is not known to me. Whichever being it may be that granted me these powers over time itself determined that as I failed many of my own friends and loved ones...they died, and I..."

The oracle is quiet for a moment after this. Tears trickle down her cheeks. Her gaze appears directed at the floor, but she clearly does not see it. A forlorn and helpless look washes over her face as she lives in another moment sometime in the past. Then she closes her eyes and wipes away her tears with one hand.

"I know," she begins, "that sometimes it seems someone like me would not be very good at helping someone reaching a goal filled with so much..." she takes a breath, "...death, but I assure you, Balter Farshadow, that even I know that it cannot be avoided. Death comes to most, and often those who avoid it are the ones most in need of it."

She stands and approaches Balter, clutching her cloak closed with one hand. Despite this, Balter still catches a glimpse of her slim pale legs as the cloak flips open just a bit with each step the oracle takes. Being an elf, Durielle is much taller than an average human woman would be, yet still she does not tower over the seated Balter due to his own prodigious height. Her golden hair catches the morning light yet seems to cast a shadow on her face making the light of her silver eyes even more obvious and somehow more enigmatic.

"Of all of us, your passions and dreams could be the most momentous in the face of what is yet to come. Time will show us all whether any of you are right to trust me at all, but I will do my best to be—or at least, become—worthy of your trust. Of that you can be assured. Perhaps one day my abilities will actually help us instead of usher in more uncertainty."

Durielle smiles. Her teeth are a startling white even against the paleness of her skin despite the shadow of her glimmering hair.

"See? Even I have dreams. Isn't that reassuring?" Durielle asks rhetorically, her voice tinged with amusement.

The oracle extends her hand and arm in a way different than the normal offer of a handshake, something clearly Elven. Then she speaks to Balter in the same tongue.

Elven:
"For the honor of our fathers
and the love of our mothers,
For the stars of home
and the forest of our hearts,
For memories of those long gone
and prophecies yet to come,
My life and soul yet remain
and so my duty I ever maintain.
"

Whether Balter has ever heard it before, there is something clearly important about the words the oracle speaks to him now. It is clearly not an oath one makes lightly.

@Marisol: It's the last post on the prior page. Plus Vlad greeted Durielle, and Balter's entrance post made mention of arriving after Durielle. :P

"Well, we'll see how your 'approach' works soon enough, yeah?" Balter says, clapping Nico on the shoulder. While he was not the best judge of character, seeing how his other companions turned out made him want to give the wizard a chance. One would get the impression that he was going out on a limb to do so.

At Durielle's little outburst, Balter's brow lofts in surprise and amusement. Considering his only recently discarded belief that she was terminally ill, he found it strange - and a little funny - that he had managed to evade this temper of hers. For his own sake, he decides to keep it that way.

"So, I take it that we are no longer lazing the day away? Don't want to give the new guy here the wrong impression about our work ethic?"

Durielle laughs softly. "Fine form? I suppose I do feel better. Much needed rest cannot be matched. Even when it is interrupted."

Turning once again to Nico, Durielle says with a smile, "Truthfully, having people who do have such concern is a blessing from the gods, and one I was uncertain I would ever have again. I imagine it should be a relief to know you are joining a group that does value each other and respects everyone's contributions. Even in his departure, Hrafen has represented this by suggesting you come to fill his role within our ranks. And given our current task, this is no unimportant thing! Be not daunted. I'm certain you will find this group of misfits to be one worthy of your time and investment."

Nico follows the conversation as best he can, not entirely certain what is good-natured ribbing, in-jokes, and genuine affronts among them. I think it best not to get involved here.

Clearing his throat, Nico stands up and says, "Of that I have no doubt, Durielle.

"I'll, uh, be ready to go when everyone else is. I traveled light, and only need a few seconds to make a horse. I am looking forward to exploring with all of you." He grins at Balter and adds, "And, I promise, if we have the opportunity to melt the flesh off of someone, I'll give it a go. If they deserve it, of course."

Oleg arrives just as Nico makes his promise.. his eyes go wide.
He clears his throat, then speaks.
"I uh thought I'd see you off. Likely I won't see you for a while, unless you plan on trudging back here during the winter... so good luck to you... and I hope you all keep warm and well-fed."

It is a chilly morning.. luckily no sign of rain at the moment.

"We'd better make it back!" says Marisol with a short laugh. "Oleg, you and Svetlana have made this place our home with your hospitality. You'd have to work pretty hard to shoo us away." She gives a quirky smile, then starts to haul herself up into Prancer's saddle, fails, pauses, tries again, then finally gets herself up at an odd angle and manages to adjust her positioning.

Armed with her mail shirt and studded pteruges, and her long black hair bound up underneath a kerchief and mail coif, Marisol presents a very different appearance, one far more ready for war than the relaxed courtier of the prior eve.

Unless someone has a better idea, I'm thinking our overall route should be: Oleg's -> A4 -> B4 (maybe see Tyg and Perlivash if they are still there) -> Temple of the Elk (visit Jhod/recruit for High Priest?) -> D3 (explore) -> E3 (explore) -> F3 (explore) -> E4 (explore) -> E5 (explore) -> F5 (explore) -> F4 (explore)/Settle/Start building.

I like the proposed route, it will get us a good chunk of the Skunk River known and loop us back around to the fort.

Vladimir smiles as he briefly considers making a comment of a similar nature that the two had been passing back and forth for a while now, but given the question he had asked just prior to Nico's arrival he thinks better of it, shaking his head. You need to back off for now, Vladimir. You know good and well that question was not fair to have asked her...

Lifting his glass he says, "The wine is quiet good...well either that or it has just been too long since I have had any." he says with a grin. "I understand where you are coming from. We have been on the move for so long that even a day and a half of idle time nearly seems like an eternity."

"I think I have just finish planning our route for the next couple of weeks or so, I believe I am done doing anything useful for the rest of day. If there is something that you would like to do, I am willing. Of course I would fully understand if you would prefer to be alone given that we will rarely be out of each other's sight for the next few weeks."

"The gods only know what we will find after we leave the Temple of the Elk, but the temple itself is worth the trip to see it. Jhod can occasionally be a bit grumpy, but even that mostly passed after the temple was cleansed."

Vladimir continues, "The route I chose will take us through an area in which the earlier incarnation of the expedition met a couple of mischievous fey."

She sips the wine once more and dabs her lower lip with one finger, then quickly sucks the errant drop of wine off her fingertip.

"I've never had the pleasure of really interacting with Fair Folk, so it sounds like you've planned quite an itinerary," she continues. "What kinds of faeries are these? Small? Tall? Do they have pixie dust and rainbow wings? Or is that all a load of hogwash?"

"As for my figure, well, as long as I'm riding, running, and fighting for my life, I think I'm not in danger of acquiring a ballooning belly! Though I've come to terms with the fact that I'll never fit into my old wedding dress. I was quite a waif as a young woman. Having a pair of children does have an effect." A surprised look crosses the swordsman's face.

"I...I have not really thought much about that. Astavos, my first mentor and teacher, passed on to the Great Beyond a number of years ago. I suppose there is an outside chance that you would meet Swordlord Mikalos." Vladimir says.

"One of the only drawbacks of the way my youth was spent is that I was seldom in one place long enough to make any real lasting friends of note. I suppose there were a few. Garrett I believe chose to become a knight of a different sort the last I heard."

Continuing he says, "I suppose there is a chance that you may someday meet a few of my friends from Restov. I believe Donovan is still there, assuming he didn't follow that old man on some damned fool crusade to the Worldwound. Girlfriends? Maybe Lysandra, if she's still in Restov. That relationship would never have worked. She wanted me to leave Master Mikalos and settle down when I was all of twenty. She also wanted me to make peace with my father, also something that was not very likely."

"I know its something we had discussed in one of our late night conversations before, but now that we are to be starting our own nation, I hope that someday my brother and sister will visit, once we are established."

"Do tell me a bit more about them," says Marisol. She puts down her wine glass and leans forward. "Are they at all like you? Younger or older? What do they do? I never had siblings, of course, so it's all very interesting to me."

"My siblings? Alexander is not so different than I am save he is the eldest and heir to the families holdings, not that seems to matter to me now. Alexander spends his days, or at least he did the last I saw him a few years ago, running a large portion of the family's significant mercantile interests. The last time I saw him was at his wedding. Arranged of course to another relatively minor noble family. Talia at seems to actually love him though from best I can tell. I wish them both well. Maybe someday I will visit again after my father passes on."

"Katya, Katya, Katya...my darling little sister. Precocious and beautiful...and an absolute pain in my backside. She is sixteen and should be returning from he lessons around the inner sea soon if she has not already."

"Mmm, if your little sister Katya is such a pain, it sounds like she's exactly the sort to suddenly pop up here for a visit when she hears what you're up to," Marisol says teasingly. "With your brother seeing to the family estates that frees you up to be here, though, which I will admit is good for my interests."

"I suppose calling Katya a pain is a bit much. She is just the youngest of us, add to that she is the only daughter and I am sure you can imagine just how spoiled she is." Vladimir says with a laugh. "That being said, it would not surprise me one bit to see her once word of what we are doing reaches Silverhall."

Thinking a bit more Vladimir lets out a small laugh. "I might be willing to part with a fair amount of gold to see my father's reaction when he finds out what we are up to."

Hearing Marisol's last statement, Vladimir smiles. "Ah yes, at long last Lady Surtova. Or have you thought of a different title for yourself?"

Pausing to hear any response Marisol may have, Vladimir says, "I must admit, being granted this duty and honor have stoked my own ambitions, ambitions that I did not know I even had until this opportunity had presented itself."

"You said last night that I should decide between Lord or Baron. As long as I can remember Lord Ducheski has been my father, Anton. I do not wish to be confused with him, so Baron it is...for now. Baronies imply a certain amount land associated with them, Duchies a bit more...Kingdoms..." he says, his voice trailing off.

"Technically... if I were to be legitimized, which would probably only happen if most of the Surtovas fell over dead at the same time... it would be 'Queen of All Brevoy, in the Name of Choral, Lady of Issia and Princess of Rostland, Suzerain of New Stetven, Overlord of Restov, and Defender of the Lake of Mists and Veils, Regent of the Dragonscale Throne, Blood of the Conqueror, overlord and rightful queen of all Brevoy, Head of House Surtova.' But there are several in line ahead of me on that count, including Noleski and Natala. So for my part... I rather fancy the idea of being a Countess, for some reason I can't quite place my finger upon, though for the time being 'Lady Surtova' is certainly charming," replies Marisol.

Someone's been watching too much GoT. Personally I preferred Davos's introduction of Jon after never ending into of Dany. "This is Jon Snow....he's King in the North."

Vladimir sits in stunned silence for a moment. "That is quite the mouthful." the swordsman finally says with a bit of a laugh.

With a half-grin on his face, Vladimir admits, "I can see that. Countess could be quite fitting."

"Sadly, my dear, it is getting late. We have a couple weeks of travel ahead us and getting that last bit of rest would seem to be paramount."

Vladimir gets to his feet and turns to look at Marisol as if he would like to say more but thinks better of it and says only, "Goodnight, Countess Marisol." before returning to his room.

Still happy to move on if everyone else is.

It's actually the official title for the Dragonscale Regent in Pathfinder canon!

I'm ready to advance to the next day unless someone else has something to slip in!

Durielle:
Balter casts his eyes down as Durielle tells her tale, his expression plaintive. He did not quite understand everything she had to say, but from the sound of it, she didn’t either. Punishment. The way she said it gave him the impression that she thought she deserved the fate that befell her. Such utter nonsense. In the moment of silence that follows, while she despairs, he could only remember a dull, familiar anger. For a while he sits like that, merely nodding to indicate his own attentiveness.

Only the sight of a pale leg seems to rouse him from this stupor. And then another, even closer to him. Realizing that he is being approached, he slowly looks up once more, reestablishing eye contact. Right away, he almost wishes he hadn’t. Once again she speaks in the tongue of his mother, one that while all too common, only rarely graced the ranger’s ears. But when it did, it never failed to bring with it nostalgia. And what was more was the solemn oath she swore with them. Crude as he could be, the words’ meaning were not lost on Balter, not entirely. The half-elf subconsciously swallows, wondering how he should respond. One of his arms move slightly, but doubt inevitably seeps in.

Yet again, he averts his gaze. ”Do you have a selfish bone in your entire body? Isn’t there anything you’ve ever wanted for yourself, and only yourself? Or did the thing that did this to you take that away as well?”

He moves on in a hurry, perhaps unwilling to hear the answers he asked for.

”You don’t need to answer that. It’s just a little frustrating, hearing you talk about being worthy of my trust. It’s not something I give freely, you know. You offer your support, but I don’t get the impression that you’ve ever stopped to wonder whether you’re giving it to someone who deserves it.”

Balter’s knuckles turn white as he clutches his knees tighter, all while the stare he gives the corner of the room intensifies.

”Vlad and Marisol are going to achieve great things here. I don’t need to be able to see into the future to guess that much. They are worthy of you. But me… it’s like you said. I’m just here to bring death. I don’t see anything momentous about that.”

Restless with being in the fort, Balter takes Owlbear for a long ride out into the wilderness. Though they were bound to get all the fresh air they'd need the following day, he just wanted to be out. He patrols the perimeter for any bandits despite knowing full well that there wouldn't be any, more to give himself an excuse to stay out than anything. Not that he's ever needed one.

Staying with the hex with Oleg's. So unless a group of trolls decide to pop out and murder Balter, I think I'm fine. :P

""We'd better make it back!" says Marisol with a short laugh.

Hearing Marisol's comment, or perhaps seeing her initial difficulties getting in the saddle, Vladimir chuckles as he gracefully climbs into Shadow's saddle. "She has the right of it, you know." the swordsman says to the trading post's proprietor and his wife. "If we are to be successful in this latest task we have been granted, we are going to need the help of fine folk such as you." Vladimir says with a broad smile on his face.

As the swordsman directs his faithful steed out the gates of the trading post, Vladimir adds, "Do not be too surprised if we come calling on you and Kesten to help us govern this new land once we have begun to establish it. Take care, and we will see you again soon."

I'm thinking our overall route should be: Oleg's -> A4 -> B4 (maybe see Tyg and Perlivash if they are still there) -> Temple of the Elk (visit Jhod/recruit for High Priest?) -> D3 (explore) -> E3 (explore) -> F3 (explore) -> E4 (explore) -> E5 (explore) -> F5 (explore) -> F4 (explore)/Settle/Start building.

Oleg nods... and he steps alongside Svetlana and Kesten as they smile and wave farewell.

It is the first day of Neth... the third month of Autumn. The temperature is about the same chilliness as yesterday morning, but there is more cloud cover - though none in sight appear to hold rain.

Vlad - I think you mean B3 not B4.

Nico stops and takes a long look at Oleg's outpost. This is it. You wanted a change, and now it is happening.

The cold, fall morning has a chill to it that seeps it's way under your skin if you stand still long enough, but he isn't ready to move just yet. He turns his gaze to the overcast sky and shudders. I've spent too much time in the city.

Looking down, he produces a small bit of what looks like hair in one hand, gestures with the other, and speaks the arcane words of a spell. When he's done, a light horse, complete with bit, bridle, and saddle, appears in front of him. He straps down is pack, walks to the horse's left side, takes the reins, and pulls himself up by the pommel.

He turns his head to Oleg, Svetlana and Kesten and waves back at them.
