"Apparently the source of the water was some sort of spell on Nugrah's part." Vladimir says, not seeing any other source and the water flow stopped.

Moving over to help Marisol out of of the mud, "There you are m'lady.

"What now? Deal with our captive before settling in? Or do we want to head out straight away?"

"Thank you. Now, let's make sure there are no more surprises, then have a little chat with our resident," says Marisol.

After a moment's thought she adds, "We'll need to bury the bodies as well, I think."

Apparently, she's much too flustered to be able to make out anything under all the mud spattering the man's decrepit body.

Nugrah is clearly dead.

In the cellar, you find a wealth of trade goods, tools, and adventuring gear... as well as a chest of jewelry, and another filled with sacks of coin.

1350gp in coin... 4 appraise checks for the other stuff if you care to know value now.

Well, at least Durielle got some kind of information out of that. /eyeroll :P

Marisol comes back and carefully picks up Nugrah's withered body, then brings him up to join the others.

"Any of those boxes of supplies have a shovel? I'm going to start digging, unless you all find another hidden corner that we need to check out."

"Well, he did say we were standing in his grave," Balter says evenly, surrendering Nugrah's body to Marisol without complaint. "Unless the Stag Lord is hiding any more skeletons in his closet, I'd say we're about done here. Speaking of whom..."

The ranger digs through the tools, searching for a more leak-resistant bag for the bandit leader's head.

"Right. Nettles. Um... not sure where to bury everyone. Outside the wall for certain. Maybe the base of the hill?" She starts wrapping up the bodies so that they can be moved in the cart to wherever the group decides to bury them.

All common tools appear to be here... Marisol soon finds two shovels.

Balter finds a leather healer's kit bag near Nugrah's nest (all supplies within are overused or used up) plenty of room for the head, and should be fairly resistant to leaking.

"Agreed. This is going to be grueling work. Besides, we need to question our captive, and I still need to cook dinner," says Marisol as she finishes loading the bodies on the cart with Vlad's help.

Walking down the bottom of the hill with Marisol and the cart of bodies. Vladimir says, "We should check Sneeg for anything that may be of import to his brother, Marlbek. I still think we will be able to pull him away from Dovan, just a shame Falgrim would not listen to reason."

At the bottom hill, sufficiently away from the keep, Vladimir begins to dig. "If you still have the ability to do so today, cast that spell you have that allows one to stay awake all night on me tonight. You need your rest to heal the rest of the way. You had me worried for a bit when I looked down from the wall and saw what condition you were in before Durielle was able to help you."

Marisol starts to object, then rubs her arm ruefully and says, "You're right. I can do that."

By the time Marisol and Vladimir return, the bound bandit regains consciousness.

Hrafen moves over to the bound bandit, and addresses him matter-of-factly, as he lets small wisps of flame play over his fingers.

"Look, you are, frankly, in a piss-poor bargaining position. The Stag Lord is dead, as is everyone else who was in the fort. I would like nothing better than to dissolve you in acid, but my allies are slightly less blood-thirsty than I, and believe that even bandits can be offered a chance at redemption.

The best way to bring that about is to prove yourself to be useful. Tell us the extent of the operation here; how many patrols are currently out of the fort? Are there any other outposts? Really, don't hold back anything - or I will make sure there is not enough left of you to even be identified as human. If you cooperate, you will be put in a work-release program, and eventually released. I recommend cooperating...."

"Eh yeah.. I hear ya...." He looks down at his chest where he'd been struck by Hrafen's force missile. "Feel like I've been kicked by a mule."

"Apart from Falgrim's hunters we got two patrols... four or five of 'em each, and some fellas posted at the crossing of the Thorn and Shrike. Pulled outta the Narlmarches a while back, and the bluff... after we lost Camp Thorn. #&@%'s slowed down since Dovan was sent packin'."

"So I'm it, eh? Everyone else dead? $#!@... we all had the thought the boss couldn't be killed... Death himself we thought. I'm Cragger... Cragger Kench."

Shortly after Marisol and Vladimir return from burying the bodies of the Stag Lord's minions, Vladimir makes his way to where they had left the unconscious bandit.

Entering the room, the swordsman sees that Hrafen has everything well in hand, and has the captive bandit singing like a bird.

Vladimir gives Hrafen a smile and a an appreciative nod before asking, "How often do these patrols report back into the fort? Should we be expecting visitors yet this evening?"

Did we find anything of note on Falgrim's body that we think might be of importance to Marlbek?

"Possible.. not likely. Come by once a week... unless they get a haul before then. Around midday tomorrow's when they're expected."

Falgrim had a copper ring, bronze ouroboros cloak clasp, magic studded leather, mwk weighted spear with adamantine mace head end, mwk composite shortbow (+1 Str)... The cloak clasp and shortbow are the most stylized/unique in design.

"Sounds like we might be spending a bit more time here than anticipated. Better have them come to us than try and hunt them down." Vladimir says, voicing a plan as much as asking his companions their opinions on the matter.

"So we should be expecting one group tomorrow. When should we be expecting the second group to check in?" Vladimir asks Cragger.

Vladimir will pull the ring, cloak clasp, and bow to the side as possible tokens of good will with Marlbek. The rest can go into the loot list. By the way, who is keeping track of the loot as of now? Much earlier in the game Vorik and I kept the list, and I am certainly willing to do so again. On the other hand, if someone else wants to do so, that's fine too.

Marisol folds her arms and listens as Cragger relates his information, then goes about setting up for evening in the fort - prepping for supper, cleaning up some of the blood from her last fight, generally doing maintenance to get ready for the upcoming day.

Vladimir gathers his companions. "It seems Cragger has chosen to try his hand at rehabilitation. Typically in the past this choice has come along with the removal of a few digits. Durielle chose to intervene on behalf of the last few that had made this choice."

Turning to Durielle he asks, "Are you wishing to do the same this time?"

Returning his gaze to Cragger, Vladimir continues, "If this is your choice, know that this second chance is also your final chance. Deviate from the agreement or return to your former ways in any form and you life will be forfeit. Understood?"

"Ah now the digits, eh?"
"Spilled my guts.. near downright pleasant I've been, wouldn't you say good Miss?" He smiles to Durielle.. with a sparse set of teeth near as bad as Nugrah.

"I suppose we should see about a bit of dinner and clean up. Tomorrow promises to just as busy as today." he says wandering off to find Marisol.

Catching up with the magus, he asks, "Anything I can do to help?"

Just RPing a bit. When you are ready to move on, DM BG, I am too.

Marisol is going through the supplies, cutting up some radishes and cabbages and preparing for supper. "Funny you should ask," she says to Vlad. "I was wondering the same. You got the bandit to see the error of his ways, I presume?" She nods appreciatively, assuming the affirmative. "I'm thinking a bit about the confrontation later. If they come up the main road we can use the same tactics that the Stag Lord used against us, missile fire from above. After that... I guess we'll have to deal with Dovan. Clearly he's been involved in some of this illicit business. It does make me feel like we aren't too far different from him - taking over these areas by force of arms. The major distinction is that we're not crisscrossing the countryside to rob merchants and travelers, and we're doing this under the seal of official authority."

She pauses with a cabbage in hand and says, "Then what? I suppose we could return to Restov or Port Ice or wherever. This old ruin isn't going to be much good without a significant and concerted effort to rebuild it, and we haven't the funds or the influence to do that kind of thing on our own."

She smiles and says, "I got my adventure, though, that's for sure. And plenty besides."

"Cragger was willing to go along with the idea, although I had my doubts about whether he would carry through without issue until Durielle made the final sale so to speak."

Vladimir says with smile. "That woman is going to be the end of my finger chopping days I believe...and honestly, that is fine by me."

"Archery would be fine starting point for dealing with patrols, but I think that we need to find a way to lure them inside lest they simply run away, and in all likelyhood, join up with Dovan. Which would make that confrontation that much more difficult." Vladimir says contemplating the upcoming fight.

"As to the differences you mention between us and Dovan, that difference is a rather distinct one, would you not say"

"You have had enough of the Greenbelt?" the swordsman asks. "I was hoping I would be able to convince a few members of the party, you in particular, to stay out here and see what can be built...with or without the aid of Restov. There are still too many things odd in the region, old man nettles, formerly cursed temples, the whole mess with Woelder Hague in Elmere..." the swordsman says, his voice trailing off a bit.

INACTIVE - GAME DIED

"The differences are important enough. Not least of which is that we are willing to sacrifice our own comforts to protect the people who travel through these forsaken lands, while the bandits we are fighting prey upon the weak for their own comforts and amusements."

"I did come out here to make a new life," says Marisol, "but I don't know how I would rebuild a castle like this. One stone at a time, I suppose. One could make something of these lands... but it would take a significant investment of building materials, seed for crops, that sort of thing. The kinds of things we could perhaps purchase from Elmere, or have shipped in from Restov, but it's a lot to do. We do have plenty to straighten out before we even get to entertaining that dream, though!" She breaks the cabbage into pieces and cleans it before putting it into the stew.

"But wherever we do decide to go, it'll be with the people who care about me, and whom I care for as well. You don't have to do much to convince me," she says with a quirk of her lips.

"Well...you do have all the time in world to rebuild a castle, or at least more than us short-lived types." Vladimir says with a smirk.

"That being said, I am very happy to hear that it will not take a great deal of convincing."

Changing the topic of conversation to something more in the present, Vladimir asks, "Those arrow wounds still look fairly painful, do you heal normally? I only ask because magical healing seems to be less effective than it should on you."

"I still have a potion if you think it would help." he adds, obviously concerned about Marisol's well-being.

INACTIVE - GAME DIED

"Oh, yes, yes I do mend with time," says Marisol. "It's just that part of my nature rejects the power that healers call upon... some folks say because the taint of undeath means that I am rejected by the gods, but that's a silly notion because all kinds of healing magic are less effective on me, whether from a priest or from a magic potion or the fortifying spells of a wandering troubadour. There's some magical theory behind it, but the short version is that those mending magics just aren't as potent for me. Fortunately I can recuperate like any other person with rest and time."

She picks up a bunch of carrots and starts topping them, then says, "Though I may have all the time in the world, I wouldn't want to spend it on a lonely endeavor." chop "I spent far too many years shunned and friendless. So I am more than happy to have something to do now with company." chop "I do think that arrow almost killed me, though." chop "Durielle managed to patch me up nicely but if it had been just a little bit in the wrong direction..." chop "... that would've been just like a stake through the proverbial vampire's heart." She points the carrot at her chest as if it were a vampire hunter's wooden stake.

"I'm lucky he missed, as my chest is a pretty big target," Marisol laughs.

"Anyway, yes, I'll use my watch spell on you and get some sleep for myself," she says, flipping the carrot back around and then quickly chopping it into small pieces to go into the stew. She glances over at the coals grilling bits of game meat. "I think I have things under control here. Going to warm up some of the biscuits shortly. Maybe take a look at what we have to drink? We can always get some water from the Tuskwater, but I would like to think we have some beer or ale or something like that." She picks up the next carrot and waggles it at Vlad. "I'll bet Hrafen has an exact inventory of our beverages."

She glances down at the bloody stains all over her gambeson and adds, "I might as well clean this before bed, anyway. A little water and a little magic will go a long way."

Vladimir looks as if he is about to say something about Marisol's first comment, but thinks better of it.

"Well we do have a few bottles of Papa Grundy's finest, though I am not so sure drinking too much of that is a good idea given that we are expecting another fight tomorrow. Good call on talking to Hrafen. I am sure he has something more appealing than lake water." the swordsman says heading off to speak with the portly halfling.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Finding Hrafen elsewhere within in the keep, Vladimir says, "Marisol is finishing up preparing dinner and thought you might be the proper fellow to speak to about any libations we may have at our disposal other than Papa Grundy's finest or water from the Tuskwater. Anything in particular come to mind?"

Durielle's quick thinking might have gotten most of the horses away from potential danger, but it also slightly complicated the otherwise simple task of retrieving them. Not that Balter was complaining - he was glad for the busywork, and for the opportunity to brood on his own for a while. Watching the Stag Lord die had not been nearly as cathartic as he hoped it would. Seeing the sorry state of the man's decrepit father did not help, nor did the unceremonious task of putting down the crazed owlbear.

Easy as it is for Balter to track down and collect the horses, he takes his time doing so. He eventually shows up to the fort again with the horses in tow, leading them by the reins. After tying them down somewhere, the ranger is quick to grab a keg of Papa Grundy's brew and sit down with it.

Hrafen has been busily trying to make a well-roofed area of the keep habitable... or at least less dirty.

Through the recurrent application of Prestidigitation ;-)

When found by Vladimir, he is resting, sitting on a small human-sized 'foot-stool', leaning backwards against the wall.

"I would recommend avoiding the rot-gut that Grundy was sending up here. It'll get you drunk, sure enough, but tastes foul enough that it would ruin your palate for whatever food you were having with it. It would also likely give you a wicked hangover in the morning..."

He frowns, thoughtfully.

"Lakewater would probably be fine, although I would suggest boiling it, first, just to be on the safe side - we don't know what might be leeching into the water around here."

Hrafen then smiles, with a distinct twinkle in his eye.

"That said, I might just have a bottle or two of something better squirreled away for a special occasion... we would just need to be careful not to drink too much; we still have a job to do, after all..."

Some fire enters Hrafen's eyes when Vladimir makes his suggestion.

"Now that is a plan I can get behind!"

Just to clarify my understanding is correct: There are two roving patrols (one due back tomorrow), the group at the ferry, and Dovan's mob, left to be eliminated?

Male LN Human (Varisian) Order of the Dragon Cavalier (Daring Champion) 4 / Bard 1 | HP: 25/39 | AC: 20 (14 Tch, 16 FF) | CMB: +5 (+6), CMD: 18 (19) | Fort +5, Reflex +6, Will +4 | Initiative: +5 | Perception: +8, Sense Motive: +8 | Speed 30ft | Active conditions: None | Performance 7/7 | 1st Level Spells 0/2 | Panache 2/3 | Challenge 1/2 | Tactician 1/1

I think both patrols are due in tomorrow. But otherwise the rest is the same as I understand it.

Even better! In that case, I think the plan will be to eliminate the patrols, then sweep out to deal with the ferry crew tomorrow, reserving the assault on Dovan for the day after... following which, we should have well and truly broken the backbone of organised banditry in the area!

I agree that we should also do our best to identify the items we have accumulated thus far, and then assign them to whomever can make the best use of them (liquidating the remainder, and splitting the coin when we can).

Whoops. I think the stuff was bottled and not kegged... no matter. :P

Missing out on the brewmaster's professional opinion, Balter pops open a bottle of Papa Grundy's brew and takes a few experimental sniffs at it. His nose scrunches up slightly, but his standards are apparently low enough for the brew to pass the test. Without hesitation he takes a swig of the alcohol and lets it sit in his mouth for a few moments. While not necessarily surprised by the strength of the alcohol, his mouth twists into a few odd expressions, before finally, he swallows.

"Well, damn," he remarks, still savoring the aftertaste. "Should have let the fort drink this piss first. Would have knocked them all on their asses, saved us some trouble. Well, unless the Stag Lord planned on drinking it all himself. Wouldn't surprise me, honestly..." The ranger proceeds to pour the rest of the bottle out onto the man's bagged head. "Hey, save some of that for Nettles. You'll be seeing him real soon."

INACTIVE - GAME DIED

Marisol hums tunelessly to herself as she tends the stew and warms the bread for the evening's meal. She seems surprisingly at peace, given the extreme violence only a short time ago.

Once Balter abandons the horses to get drunk and talk to severed heads, Durielle thanks him for locating the horses and sees to their needs. She removes their saddles and blankets before rubbing them down, and she sees to making feed available to them. She does her best to ignore the ruins surrounding her and focus on this task as it reminds her of a time not so long ago when she was yet still a simple village peasant...

Night passes without incident.
The first day of Lamashan is a typical autumn morning.... In the wee hours a light rain begins, and lasts throughout the first half hour of dawn. The air is breezy, cool, and crisp. The clouds overhead are crowded and fast-moving, and increasingly white as the morning goes on.

Walking the walls, Vladimir can faintly see his own breath in the cool autumn morning. As the early morning drizzle begins, the swordsman pulls up the hood of the gray cloak he had purchased as part of the ruse devised by he and his companions to take the fort.

As the sun rises, Vladimir briefly considers waking his friends in preparation for what is sure to be another day of conflict, but thinks better of it. "No, let them sleep, they've more than earned it." he quietly says to himself.

The early rain subsided, he removes his cloak long enough to shake away the fine droplets of rain. He yawns and stretches as he re-dons the cloak and continues his watch for the Stag Lord's returning patrols.
