"A truce?" Vladimir asks.

"That is a pleasant change, usually everything we run into out her is out to kill us." the swordsman says, re-sheathing his blade.

Turning his attention to the boggard, Vladimir nods in the affirmative. "Truce." while displaying his now unarmed hands.

Pointing to himself, he says, "Vladimir." Gesturing toward the boggard he asks, "You?"

He shows no sign that Nico's statement reassured him... no sign he understood.
He eyes Nico, then Vladimir. He points to himself "Garuum.", then points to the tusked frog creature "Ubagub."
(in Boggard) "I know few human words... (lists in Common) Hungry, snake, bug, you, truce... uhh die, no."
(in Boggard) "You are in my kingdom. We are alone, and want to be... it's good. With truce we are not enemies. With truce we can live in same woods, but different kingdoms and not fight. Yes?"

Assuming Nico translates...

Vladimir smiles and again nods his head in the affirmative. "Truce."

Gesturing to his companions and then toward Garrum and odd frog creature, apparently named Ubagub, and says "Friends?"

Yes, assume Nico translates everything.

Garuum looks down and palms his cheek as if in thought for a moment.. you can now see his left hand appears a bit mangled.
(in Boggard) "I have heard this word. Ubagub is my pet... a loyal pet since I left the tribe."
Ubagub now moves past Balter, and waddles to Garuum's side. Garuum pulls a handful of worms from his satchel and holds them out for his pet to lick from his hand.
"I was smartest but not mightiest. I knew I should be king so I ate many many blue dragonflies and rode Ubagub into battle against the tribe's priest-king. He knocked me down and I was put in chains and pen. Priest-king said I would die. But while they were drunk on too much bog whiskey I smashed my hand free with a rock, and freed Ubagub. We broke the gate, and left Hooktongue Slough." (he points west) "Found my own kingdom here where I can eat all the mushrooms and crawlies."

Vladimir points to Garuum's mangled hand, and asks "Do you want help with your hand?" emphasizing the word help in hopes that is one of the words that Garuum knows.

Turning back to his companions, the swordsman says, "Seems like he's generally harmless and just would like to be left to his own devices. I really do not see any harm in that. What do the rest of you think?"

Durielle's divine magic doesn't seem to bring any enlightenment, but Nico uses a spell which allows him to glean information from the amphibious humanoid. She tries to remain non-threatening and steps back allowing Nico to lead the conversation.

"Choosing to allow life to live and thrive is always the better choice," the oracle says approvingly.

Garuum watches your interactions... sees Nico speak at length after he tells his story.
"You understand my words... they do not, but you cannot speak my tongue, yes?

"If there is nothing else, and we are all content to leave Garuum to his own devices, I would think we should make note of this area on our map and move along...if nothing else to find someplace a bit less swampy to make camp for the night before continuing on with our exploration." the swordsman says pleasantly enough, but still keeping an wary eye on the boggard.

As best as the limited ability to communicate will allow, Vladimir bids Garuum farewell and heads back toward Arliss and the horses.

"Shall we be off to find higher ground to camp for the night? Another busy day of exploration awaits us tomorrow."

Garuum waves farewell as he leads his pet Ubagub over to where he'd been plucking worms and bugs from overturned rocks. You head northwest to higher ground you'd come across not too far from the river.

The night passes without incident, and you wake to similarly chilly morning with a couple hours worth of exploring left to do on the other side of the Skunk.

No objections from me!

Riding next to Vlad the next morning, Marisol quips to him, "You know the thing I like best about this winter? The cold isn't as much of a hassle when you have warm, cozy nights."

Vladimir grins. "No, the cold doesn't seem to much of a problem at night anymore at all, my love."

His expression turns to more of a frown when he sees the Skunk River. "Although that is not going to make for a pleasant morning...cold, smelly water. Thank the gods, Nethys in particular I suppose, for that prestidigitation spell..."

"Bleah," says Marisol as she makes an unhappy face. "Last thing I need is to smell like rotten eggs. You have the right of it, dear," she says to Vlad, "a little magic goes a long way. Let's get this over with."

You take your time crossing the river. With the temperature not much above freezing, being wet in the cold air soon becomes of more concern than the smell. You all reach the far bank, but continuing as you are will certainly cause further harm.

Getting to the opposite side of the river, Vladimir begins copious use of the prestidigitation spell to dry himself and his companions, starting with Durielle. Once everyone is dry, he will worry about the smell.

Nico does the same. After everyone is thoroughly dry he says, "That was unpleasant."

Even with the delay you are able to forge on, and finish exploration of the hex not long after noon. At the last bit you find yourself in a sparsely treed neck of woods. With the clear sky and sun high, you catch some relatively warm moments before setting out again.

Continue exploration? Do all of this side of the river in E2 first?

That sounds like a good plan. I doubt any of us are in a hurry to get wet and stinky any sooner than we have to.

"Unfortunately, Nico, unpleasant is part of the job description out here occasionally. Just think of how much worse it would be without that handy little spell."

Less than an hour into your exploration, while near the river, you spot what looks like a decent place to cross - when it comes time to do so. A wedge of land juts into the river, and a few tiny islands lie between it and the opposite bank.
You see debris of rotting wood and stone (mostly closer to the far side) suggesting there was likely a bridge here at some point.

Assuming we have explored the portion of the hex on this side of the river...if not, I would propose we finish that and then come back to this location to cross.

Let's finish this side before crossing. Given that it would be that late upon return, I'd be in favor of camping before crossing too.

In the woods away from the river crossing, after sunset, Marisol finally dismounts from Prancer.

"Ugh. Still stiff and sore."

She ties the horse to a tree, digs through the saddlebags, and makes a short perimeter around the prospective campsite, with her darkvision giving her a clear view of the area. She collects some fallen sticks and stones and makes a small ring of rocks, then sets up a tiny fire in it - just enough to keep a start for a larger one, later. Then she asks Vlad, "Dear, would you mind putting a light spell on one of these stones, so everyone's not stumbling around in the dark?"

After that she starts setting up the new larger tent that they acquired in the last trip to Oleg's.

"So far, interesting trip. I never thought I'd meet a friendly frog-man. And we have a crossing now, that'll be handy. Now to see what's on the far side of the river... I must admit, I'm a bit excited."

Male LN Human (Varisian) Order of the Dragon Cavalier (Daring Champion) 4 / Bard 1 | HP: 25/39 | AC: 20 (14 Tch, 16 FF) | CMB: +5 (+6), CMD: 18 (19) | Fort +5, Reflex +6, Will +4 | Initiative: +5 | Perception: +8, Sense Motive: +8 | Speed 30ft | Active conditions: None | Performance 7/7 | 1st Level Spells 0/2 | Panache 2/3 | Challenge 1/2 | Tactician 1/1

"Not a problem at all, my love." Vladimir says, casting the requested spell before returning to tending to Shadow.

Having tended to Shadow, Vladimir goes over to tend to Prancer while Marisol goes about setting up the tent.

"That situation was a bit odd to say the least...that being said it went better than it had any right to." the swordsman says with an appreciative nod toward Nico and Durielle for their efforts with Garuum.

"Well done by everyone in general there, it was nice to resolve something without bloodshed for once. I was beginning to believe that was something we were no longer capable of." Vladimir says with a genuine smile.

With the horses taken care of, Vladimir takes his gear over to the tent. With a hopeful tone to his voice, he asks his lover "What sort of delightful meal do you have planned for us tonight?"

Marisol grins and says with a smirk, "Frog legs."

After suppressing a chuckle for about a minute she says, "No, but really, I was thinking apricot preserves with pork chops, and some asparagus. Bread too, of course. Need to use the asparagus before it wilts! Though in this cold weather our food stocks will stay edible longer."

Vladimir rolls his eyes and chuckles despite himself. "Gods I hope not." he says in response to the frog legs comment. "The only frogs we saw were either tusked, purple, and slimy, or they were talking to us...so..."

Hearing Marisol's real dinner plans, Vladimir walks up behind the beautiful dhampir and wraps his arms around her waist and kisses her neck. "That sounds wonderful, my love. What can I do to help?"

After an uneventful afternoon and evening of exploration, you make it back to the crossing... a little after the sun goes down. If precedent holds true, you should be able to finish this hex by this time tomorrow. You get a light sprinkle of rain as you are finishing setting up camp, but it ends after about twenty minutes.

The night before

"You can keep doing that, it's very motivational, though soon I will need to move around and handle a very hot iron skillet," says Marisol with a smile to her paramour. "Also I could use a pot hanging over the fire to get water boiling for the asparagus."

The drizzly morning

Marisol shields herself with a parasol, of all things, as the drizzle commences. She says, "Right, we have the whole of the other side of the river to explore."

It's not morning yet. What will watch order be?

Looks fine by me! Though we might want to come up with a general routine and stick with it. I know the potency of keep watch
complicates that somewhat, though.

"Is it always going to be 'love this' and 'love that' between the two of you from hereon out?" Balter asks exasperatedly, finally addressing the elephant in the room. The look on his face suggests that he is more amused than annoyed. "I mean, I think we all saw this coming from a mile away, but yeesh."

We do need to designate a normal watch pattern. I would envision a different individual taking the long watch each night (provided Marisol has the spell slot left) with two people getting a full undisturbed sleep each night. That way each individual is only doing the long watch once every six days.

Vladimir smirks at Balter's "outrage". "We might be a bit unbearable for a while yet, so you had best get used to the idea."

About two hours into Vladimir and Balter's watch, Vladimir hears rustling in the foliage just outside the camp. As he and Balter move to investigate, they see a large serpentine form moving toward Nico - currently asleep in his bedroll.

It sees that it has been spotted, and rears up. The creature has a dragon-like head slightly larger than man's head, and arms ending in claws.
